I've been here twice and really like it. First, the drinks. They range from $1.99-$3.99...talk about throwback pricing. Reading th menu made me feel like it was 1999 all over again. Price aside, the drinks are good and on par with what you would find at typical boba shops. The food is where this place really shines. They have a large menu, ranging from rice to noodles to grilled meats served on a hot plate. I got the $21 NY steak today, which was a generous portion, served with sliced onions, corn, broccoli and choice of rice or spaghetti. It's not Morton's but, c'mon, $21 for a steak fix these days is a heck of a deal. Most of their entrees are in the $14-18 range. To top it off, the service is great - attentive and very friendly. Unfortunately they have discontinued their weekday combo menu making it less worth the drive for us so we're not sure when we'll next be back. The good news is, their chicken steak is still just as yummy! We ordered: - Grilled chicken steak with black pepper sauce and spaghetti (4/5): Super crispy skin and juicy chicken. The black pepper sauce adds a fragrant touch - much better pairing than the mushroom sauce we got on a previous visit. The spaghetti portion is smaller than at most other HK cafes and isn't as good though. - Baked sole filet with rice and white sauce (3/5): Had high expectations for this dish but it didn't quite meet them. The rice used was plain white rice which isn't what I'm used to at other HK cafes and it left me a bit disappointed since it meant the dish was much more monotone in flavor and there were bites that were unflavorful. The fish itself was generously portioned and easy to eat with the warming cheese and white sauce combo. Wouldn't get again only because I know other spots that do it much better but decent overall. - Beef stew with noodle (3/5): Had expected this to be dry style with the beef stew over softened egg noodles but it came out as a soup. Beef pieces were tender and generous. Egg noodles were a bit overcooked. - Sticky Rice Dim Sum: They were massive and decent in flavor. They were a little mushy I think because it had been steaming a while (which was probably why they were quick to be served) but we didn't mind - Siumai: Generous amount of fish egg on top and was pleasantly meaty. We found parking in the front but also know there's a lot in the back. The restaurant itself is big and pretty empty and quiet. The two of us created our own little afternoon tea time when we stopped by at 2pm on a Monday. I was surprised at how affordable the drinks were, ranging from $1.99 to $4.99. I haven't seen prices like that in ages! It reminded me of visiting Cafe Spot back in the day in Alhambra on Valley Blvd. We weren't too hungry, so we shared an order of fried chicken wings and a minced beef with egg over rice. Both dishes were tasty, and we even had leftovers from each. My osmanthus milk tea had a very light floral flavor, but for the price, I really can't complain. You can customize your drink, which I did with easy ice and half sugar. Since we came during off-hours, we were the only customers the entire time and basically had the place to ourselves. Earlier when looking at the menu, I noticed that they offered a lot of drinks. The food selections were also somewhat different. We got the baked chicken steak over spaghetti. The spaghetti was good. However, the chicken steak was not good. It didn't taste that fresh. There were lots of chicken skins and it was dry. We also ordered the XLB and egg waffles. XLB was not bad. However, it was sticking to the container. Once I pulled it out, it teared and most of the soup got onto the container. The egg waffle was a bit too sweet. It was not bad, but there are better ones around. For drinks, we got the mango pomelo and earl grey tea (hot). Not bad at all esp for the price. We were on Las Tunas Blvd to run an errand when I spotted Cafe Spot and wondered if it was connected to the old Cafe Spot in Alhambra that closed a few years ago. A quick Yelp search confirmed they serve the red wine braised short rib, my favorite dish from the original location, so my boyfriend and I decided to stop by after our errand. We shared the braised short rib, which came with rice, steamed corn, and broccoli. It was exactly how I remembered it: moist, savory, and absolutely delicious. We also ordered an iced tea with a slice of lime, which was really refreshing, and an Earl Grey milk tea with agar boba. The milk tea wasn't too sweet and the agar boba had a great chewy texture. The drink prices were surprisingly affordable at $2.99 for the iced tea and $3.50 for the boba milk tea. For dessert, we ordered a Hong Kong waffle and it was crispy outside and moist inside. It was a good after dinner dessert and paired well with the milk tea. I'm so happy Cafe Spot is back, and I hope they eventually expand their menu like the old location. Cafe Spot used to be Ten Ren. Parking is located in the back. It was easy to find parking. The restaurant is quite spacious and much bigger than what it looks on the outside. We were greeted and seated right away. The menu is similar to all of the other cafe menus but what's the huge difference is the prices is much cheaper by 10-15% and the portion is decent size to share family style. The drink menu is what impressed me the most. You can get teas as low as $2.99-$3.99. That's insane. The mango pomelo sago was my favorite and only $3.99 too! I recommend Teppanyaki chicken and pork chop combo with pasta and black pepper sauce and the spicy beef tripe and tendon noodle soup. Service was quick and the staff was attentive. At Cafe Spot, I had to get a drink, since they are so worth for the cost and quality. The osmanthus oolong milk tea was very strong in the osmanthus, which is hard to do with a light flavor. I would recommend getting less ice and less sweet. The mango pomelo drink was also super worth for the price and the drink. The mango tasted very good and not artificial and it comes with crystal boba as a topping. One thing that my family all agree on is that the food can be a bit hotter, especially the side vegetables. It seemed like the corn was just thawed and the inside was a bit cold. If you remember the Cafe Spot on Valley Boulevard, then you'll be familiar with this location. Unlike the original though, this version feels more like half HK cafe and half tea shop. Both the drink menu and food menu feel smaller because of that which could be a positive or negative depending on your preference. For me, I missed a few menu items from the original Cafe Spot and was pleasantly surprised that their bolognese spaghetti tasted about the same as what I remembered. The drinks there were boba tea shop style in both flavor and that they come in similar plastic cups, so no refill and a bit wasteful (I prefer reusable cup option even if it's no refill). And because of this, it doesn't have the usual HK cafe feel where you can get at least one refill on the staple HK style milk tea or lemon tea. Service was alright. Staff seemed a bit toward the inexperienced side compared to what I'm used to expecting in the area. You can generally flag them down and get attention as needed, but occasionally you'll see the younger ones chatting with each other or looking at their phone, which is fair when business is slow and all the orders have been handed off, but during my 2-3 experiences being there, they could try to increase their scanning frequency during down time since I had to wait a little bit to get someone to help me get extra napkins, then later a check and box. Food overall tastes very similar to the original Cafe Spot. Their steak dishes are alright, a bit on the smaller side compared to other HK restaurants and less of the familiar sauce options. The spaghetti and sauce heavy dishes like baked pork are great. Some of the other dishes didn't stand out either in a good or bad way but were a thumbs up/ pass from me. Price was fair and I feel for just the drinks, competitive in pricing actually considering the quality was pretty decent (earl gray milk tea was great) Interior was interesting. Clean and spacious but the feel felt clashing to me. Like they didn't know what they wanted to do. This used to be a tea station and still has that boba shop feel to it but the table layout feels like restaurant. Feels too chill to be an HK cafe for food but too restaurant like to be a hangout/ study Spot. Overall, i like having the OG Cafe Spot food back as an option though their menu is very limited compared to the original. Drinks are good too and overall everything feels passable. I am giving it 4 stars because I felt the hybrid restaurant- tea shop style they went for doesn't really work well and feels awkward, and because the menu and staff feel slightly underwhelming. Had some yummy foods from Cafe Spot. We ordered braised beef noodle soup, braised pig trotter noodle soup, bbq pork noodle soup, and hainan chicken rice. Everything tasted flavorful and portion sizes were excellent. Price wise is great in this economy ($11-$14). The restaurant also had a tea bar that served milk teas and flavored teas ($2-$4). My daughter came down from Merced to visit me so I thought I would bring her to Cafe Spot for lunch since she never been here. I wanted to show her the Chicken Steak that I really liked. It seemed they changed their menu since last time I came. I ordered the Baked Chicken Steak thinking it was my usual. But duh! It's baked, not grilled. In my old age, these descriptive words don't register in my brain. I usually don't like cheese. Lactose intolerant, also caused by old age (sorry, TMI). However, I was pleasantly surprised. We also decided to order the tripe and tendon rice dish, but server came and notified us that they didn't have it. I got the Jasmine Green Milk Tea (2.99) with less ice and half sugar. The drinks were ready in about 5 minutes or so and they put it in a drink holder and bag for me. You can really taste the fresh floral notes in the Camellia Milk Tea. Their chicken steak was nice a crisp on the outside, yet juicy and tender inside. It also comes with a delicious black pepper sauce! The fish fillet curry was another yummy dish-tender and full of flavor. There was something different about their braised pork belly. Its sauce is thicker and sweeter than your typical 'hong shao rou,' but my table still licked it! And, on top of everything, the portion sizes will totally leave you feeling satisfied. They're a little short-staffed FOH at the moment, so be patient with them when you're waiting on your beverages. This was my family's go to place pre-COVID and it's pretty nice to see them back again! Very nostalgic feeling. The menu, food, atmosphere all gave off the same vibes. It does feel more spacious then their old location. I wish they would give the soup in the beginning! Their menu is a bit more limited than before, but quality was just about the same. I ordered the fish curry, mom ordered beef curry, and my dad ordered this tofu minced meat dish. My dad's order took the longest as the curry dishes were the first to come out. Honestly, compared to all the current hk cafes that are here now, the quality and taste is just okay. Nothing too special, so it's just a very classic and "homey" taste. Decor here is kinda bland, but they are still pretty new around so maybe they'll add more? But compared to the other hk cafes around, it is pretty "outdated". My parents did enjoy though as it pretty much tasted like how it was. There's only really two workers here, and the server seems to enjoy his job meeting new people here. Really hospitable and excellent customer service to a large party of 8! We came in on a Saturday afternoon for boba and snacks, and we received such great service. The wait staff is very accommodating and kind. Seating was pretty easy! They also have two video games which are free! Play your StreetFighter dreams out here. I decided to try this restaurant based on the many high reviews, but after my experience, I began to question their authenticity. A large number of the reviews appear to be from "elite" reviewers or brand-new accounts with only one review, which felt concerning in hindsight. When I arrived, the restaurant itself was nice--beautifully designed, modern, and clean for an Asian café. It was also fairly empty at the time, so I expected the food to come out quickly. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, as there was still a noticeable wait. I ordered two of the special sets, which included an entrée, a drink, and a dim sum item. Once I got home, my husband was excited to try the food but immediately noticed that the siu mai was unusually chewy. After a few bites, he inspected it more closely and realized the meat was not fully cooked and appeared raw. This was extremely upsetting and made him feel sick to his stomach. I was completely disgusted after that and lost my appetite, so I couldn't finish my meal. To make matters worse, the following day my husband experienced diarrhea three times, which we believe was caused by the undercooked food. Overall, this experience was very disappointing. Unfortunately we ask for the chili powder on the side, but they incorporated the chili powder in the dish. For drinks we got the 炭香招财 (碳培乌龙) or Roasted Oolong Milk Tea for $2.99, 桂语清风 (桂花乌龙) or Osmanthus Oolong Tea for $1.99, and 招财百香 (百香绿) Passion Fruit Green Tea for $2.99. They gave us Osmanthus Oolong Milk Tea instead of Osmanthus Oolong Tea so we had wait for our drinks a second time. All the drinks were good for the price. We ordered using our phone. Their drinks are very cheap compared to a good boba shop. The mango pomelo sago was a blended drink that had some pomelo and popping boba (not sago). It tasted very artificial so I guess you get what you pay for in this case. My family were longtime customers of the original Alhambra location and we were excited to support this small business again, but how this place has gone downhill. The food quality is no where on par with other competing HK cafes. This place has QR code ordering but they don't allow any modifications, which actually cause more work for their servers. I asked for no cheese for my baked pork chop rice and had to follow up with the server multiple times because the kitchen made it incorrectly and they were reluctant to remake. We had to return and cancel two dishes. First was a noodle with egg/spam where the noodles were mushy and inedible. We cut it open the and meat was very thin and we shared that was also inedible. I don't think I've ever had so many order issues in a single meal. Some may think I may be too critical, but I'll also add that the table next to me also had to return some dishes. Perhaps the kitchen was having an extremely off night. If you do decide to dine here, the only way to go are the sizzling teppanyaki dishes. They were good but not enough to offset the other dishes that were unacceptable. I decided to give an additional star for the service. They tried their best and were apologetic, but they were clearly understaffed and haven't figured out the best way to utilize the ordering system. Making it all automatic doesn't mean you can have just two people running the restaurant.
