I went to the alhambra location a long time ago and remembered their pastries were very unique and delicious. So I stopped by since I was in the area, hoping to be amazed again. My favorite is the green tea-flavored buns with sweet red beans and custard inside. I also like the buns with sweet red bean and mochi filling. They have green tea-flavored cookies that are addicting. For family birthdays, I like to get the green tea mousse cake or mocha cake. Can you tell that I like green tea? Their red bean buns are delicious. The bread is light and fluffy, unlike the "Olive" brand that you get in korean markets where the bread looks deflated. The price is good, too, compared to the an pan you get in Japanese markets which are smaller and cost more! They have the best variety / selection of any bakery I've seen of that type. Bought a whole chocolate cake for a party and was pretty disappointed. It cost more than King's Hawaiian and was very dry. They slathered on the frosting to cover it up so I wasn't able to tell until I decided to go easy on it. Every time I'm in Torrance...I have to make a trip to JJ's and get a bag of goodies. I'm particularly fond of the more savory items - any of the breads, or the ones with hot dogs, cheese, green onions, etc. However, on the sweet end, the mochi or the cream cheese stuffed ones toot my horn. OMG and the mochi in the refrigerated section - those are crazy. I've had the strawberry and green tea ones. Its cake with mochi ballooned over it. Incredibly messy, but that just means you have to scarf it down quickly. Mochi Cakes. MOCHI Cakes Y'ALL. Get into THIS. I put the blame on Jesse and his obsession. He introduced me to the glorious cake, wrapped in gooey mochi. Once cut into, the buttery, creamy cream awaits and spongy cake with mango or strawberry, even green tea! I've had the strawberry and mango and both are extremely delicious. When JJ Bakery in Torrance first opened the quality of the food was tops. When I recently visited, I was a little disappointed because the quality seemed to have slipped. My definition of quality is inclusive of non-grissley meat, low in fat content, and limited 'filler'. In recent times, JJ's quality of meatin the char sui bao seems to have gotten worse - more fat, grissle and less meat. If you know me, I have no care for 85 degree bakery items. JJ Bakery is where it's at. It's been here since I was born and I hope it will be here when I die. The bread here are baked perfectly, just how I like it, and the cakes are a wonderful balance of dense and fluffy with a good balance in sweetness. Pork sung bread, danish, brioche, more pork sung bread, red bean buns, sliced bread, more pork sung bread... I almost always buy out all the pork sung bread when I come here. The tiramisu cake is my favorite in terms of cakes here; you can get a small rectangular one for yourself or a large round one for... yourself. Finally, they got some soy milk or rice milk that goes down very nicely for if you ever get that clump of bread stuck halfway down your esophagus. Everything here is delicious or refreshing or fresh (usually). I grew up on this place so I'm going to be very clearly biased about how great JJ Bakery is. It's great. read more

Almost 4 stars I love the buns from here and I come here at least once a month, but I bit into a piece of plastic twice with the first time from the sausage and pork sung bread and another time from the hot dog and cheese bun so I avoid those. My fav. are pineapple buttermilk bread ($1.20), taro buttermilk ($1.30), BBQ pork bread ($1.25), coffee and chocolate rolls ($2.00 each), chicken pie (forgot the price) and the dried pork (pork sung) with green onion (also forgot the price). I normally buy a lot and just freeze them since I pretty far from the bakery. Microwave for about 45 secs to eat. For chicken pie, I microwave it for about 30 secs, then pop it in the oven for a bit to get the right puff pastry texture. Sorry, I forgot the temperature and bake time. I haven't tried their mochi and cakes, but some of the reviews rave about the mochi so when in doubt, just go ahead and try it. :D read more

Either my tastes have changed or I've been spoiled by better bakeries elsewhere in the city. I feel as though the quality and taste have significantly gone down in the last 8 years. There are a couple pastries I get here, as I am very close to the location several days out of the week, but noticed that the puff pastries to be inconsistent (sometimes bottom is burnt and dry) etc. It is unfortunate because the ladies that work at the register (some who have worked there for years and years) are so friendly when you want an item to be put on hold for you. read more

The cakes I usually order are super light sponge cakes with whipped cream frosting that's not going to send you to the dentist anytime soon. A white cake for 8-10 people will cost you around 25$ and you can choose what type of fruits you want on the exterior and interior. I usually order a white cake with fresh strawberries as a filling. This bakery is pretty cool, they have a lot of different items and the prices are really cheap. We usually come here before going to the beach to eat our purchases. Come here early to get the fresh baked goods. The things to get are the Tuna sandwich, BBQ pork bread and Buttermilk bread. These are the best. They have both sweet and savory goodies. You can also get handmade cakes, which look sooooo good. First impression, this bakery is like any other chinese bakery with the rolls, breads, sweet buns,desserts. It was disappointing to see this franchise because I still have the glorious memories of the flagship JJ in Hacienda Heights, where everything looked too beautiful to eat. I've been coming here for snack breads/buns and cakes for family and friend's birthdays for several years now, ever since they opened up their Torrance location (about 8 or so years ago). I really appreciate being able to get a variety of Chinese/Taiwanese bakery items here, since it saves me a trip out to Gardena (99 Ranch) or San Gabriel Valley. The cakes and pastries are also lighter than those you would find at most Western (read: American) bakeries. The bases of the cakes are often some sort of mousse (fruit or chocolate or green tea), and the frosting, if there is any, is usually whipped cream, versus the traditional buttercream. The cakes are beautifully decorated with fruit and chocolate pieces too. The last few times I've been, however, the quality and presentation of the cakes were off. The selection was pretty limited too. It's still a place I'd think of in the South Bay for getting cakes or breakfast breads, or mooncakes for the Moon Festival, but it's not at the top of my list anymore. Definitely like this bakery! Pretty small and local, but quite a lot of selection in the form of Asian baked goods! Stats open late and a good place for pastries. Like many other Asian bakeries the desserts and pastries are influenced by French pastries with an Asian twist. Their stuffed breads and rolls are quite tasty and delicious. I definitely recommend stopping by to pick up a couple of pastries on the way to work or for lunch! I've been to myriad Taiwanese-style bakeries in SoCal since moving to the region. JJ Bakery most approximates the tastes and textures of my childhood and executes them well, with reasonable prices. On a first visit to a French-style bakery, one would order "canonical" pastries such as a croissant, brioche, madeleine or palmier, to evaluate their skills. Same way with Taiwanese-style bakery. For me, the "canonical" pastries are red bean bun, milk powder bun (奶酥包) perhaps combined with pineapple-texture (菠蘿) crust, and moon cake. JJ Bakery's bread has bite, the 奶酥 in the 奶酥包 actually tastes like dairy, the 菠蘿 crust crumbles at the right moment -- when you bite into it -- and releases a wonderful aroma of browned but not burnt butter. And in the moon cakes, the date paste tastes like dates, and the salted egg yolk tastes eggy. It's hard to describe, other than authentic through and through. read more

When I come here I feel like I'm a kid again... no, not a kid in a candy store--a kid in a BAKERY! All my favorites from my childhood are here: pineapple bread, taro bun, green onion bun, custard bun, green tea roll, bbq pork bun... well, the bbq pork bun was kinda "meh" but everything else was PERFECT. They tasted just as they should, and just as I remembered... and keep in mind that I haven't lived in a Taiwanese household for 9 years. If these baked goods taste just as good as they do in my glorified childhood memories, then that means they are pretty damn good. Something new that I tried was the coffee flavored bun filled with cream cheese. OOOOOooooOOOohhhhh my gawd. I cannot believe my parents didn't introduce this wonderful delectable thing to me when I was a kid. It's my current favorite. They also have Taiwanese style cakes and desserts. This usually means that there is a heavy emphasis on fresh fruit and fruit flavors, and they use this natural sweetness instead of frosting and whipped cream like American sweets. I got the onion and potato bread, mochi red bean pastry, and the almond croissant. They all tasted okay. I liked the mochi red bean one the best. However, Chinese bakeries never wow me. I love this bakery! Egg tart! Bacon and cheese bread! Crispy hot dog! Egg salad sandwich! Curry Pie! Pineapple Bun! Pork Bun! You can find yourself spending ten bucks for about 5 or 6 items and the quality is fantastic! They sell out the curry pies and egg tarts really fast, so try and get their early. Customer service is awesome too! The two ladies at the front register are always so friendly and happy that it makes my day a little brighter too. Just went here yesterday,I always liked baked goods and this place made me want to go back again and again. I went into the shopping area for another store,Kyoei Treasures next door to this store and decided on an impulse to buy something. I didn't think I would have such a hard time picking what I would buy. Amazingly something about even there simple items like a cheese hotdog special bun looked really good. I can't see going to a bakery and thinking of buying a hot dog before but that really looked good. So anyway I did get one of their simple (or what I though was simple) items,a Tuna sandwich. After I took it out of it's package I realized that this was indeed not an ordinary tune sandwich, with 4 layers of bread,ham,cheese and a trace of sauce it may have been the best tuna sandwich I've had. These cakes are not only plain in design but they aren't big for their price. And the most important thing, taste, well i think its about average. They have so many great delicious breads and cakes at a reasonable price! My favorites here are the mochi's, cream puffs and mini chiffon cakes at an average price of $3! They also have drinks that are sweet and delicious as well as sandwiches, so just a wide variety of choices! If you come in the mornings however, expect that not all the breads will be available early. However, whenever I want to order the mini chiffon cakes or cream puffs (which come in a box of 6), I'll usually call ahead or the night before and they'll have it ready for me when needed. read more

I love this little bakery. Their service is wonderful, price is decent and their treats are amazing. I am a huge fan of their cream-filled sponge cakes. They come 6 in a box and they are usually sold out by the refrigerated section. Heavenly. If I wanted to, I would finish the entire thing in one sitting. I'm also a fan of their "watermelon" shaped bread. It's the cutest thing and my previous co-workers loved receiving them. I was just looking for a nice bakery in town so read all the reviews here about this place and I gave it a try. It was 7:40 am this morning when I get there and found out that it's not open until 8. I was gonna wait but a lady( later on I learned that her name is Sue) came and invited me in. First, I thought it's just a regular japanese bakery but then as they were putting everything one by one to the shelves I figured they had so much varieties. I bought 2 curry bean meat bread, caramel mouse cake, chese cake and red bean egg yolk pastry and one type of bread which I can not recall the name. They were all so delicious that my husband thanked me for bringing it home. It all came out fresh out of the oven which makes the taste even better. Sue was extremely patient with me and helpful.
