Today, I decided to try a new lunch spot and ordered from a restaurant. The online ordering process was pretty easy. I ordered the lunch combo L5, which included chicken with vegetables. You can choose the type of rice, soup, and either an egg roll or a spring roll. The wonton soup had a very flavorful broth and the noodles were tasty. However, the chicken and vegetables were just OK. I forgot to mention in the notes that I don't really care for too much broccoli, and my dish had a lot of it. Additionally, I don't care for zucchini in this dish. The dish was a bit bland, and the white sauce tasted like flour, so I had to use the soy sauce packet. On a positive note, the spring roll was quite delicious. If I were to dine or order from here again, I would try something else on their menu. read more

After playing tennis with my buddy, we were looking for a late dinner in the area and came across JJ Gardens on Yelp. This Chinese restaurant is located in a small shopping center. We ordered at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. I went with the dinner special which comes with your choice of appetizers and sides from a limited selection. I had the General Tso's Chicken with an egg roll and wonton soup. And fried rice. The wonton soup and egg roll were pretty much standard. Ordered takeout. Food was ready at the time for pick up. Inside was decent and clean. We got... 1. Combo Fried Rice (No Peas. No Carrots.): 5/10 it was ok. There's an aftertaste I can't describe. 2. Shrimp Lo Mein (No Cabbage. No Carrots.): 5.5/10 - shrimp used were small. Noodle texture was more on the softer side. I don't like soft noodles as they tend to be more soggy when you bite into it. Some other meats got lost in this dish-- probably happens when you reuse the wok and don't get all the meat out from previous dish cooked. Also-- there's also an aftertaste I can't describe. 3. Mongolian Beef: 5/10 meat was too velveted, a little mushy, flavors were ok (not really traditional that I'm used to in authentic Chinese food places), spice level wasn't what I expected from this particular dish AND NOT ENOUGH BEEF for $19.95. Price-wise-- I don't think it was worth it. If you wanted extra beef, they charge an additional $10. It was literally like 10 pcs of beef (sizes ranged from regular to tiny bits) and mostly onions and green onions. So thinking the way I think, I paid $2/ pcs of beef. I was pretty disappointed when I opened the container TBH. To charge that price-- at least give 20 pcs of meat-- making it approximately $1/pc of beef. Yeah... I had BEEF with this BEEF dish. If it wasn't for the pandemic and Uber Eats, I would probably never try this neighbourhood American Chinese restaurant. Houston had a recent proliferation of awesome Sichuan restaurants inside the loop, but I sometimes get a hankering for Chinese food catered to the taste of Americans. I think the quality here is comparable to the nearby P'King restaurant. My Kung Fu Tofu was tasty with the crunchiness of the peanuts complementing the rubbery exterior of the fried tofu. I liked the vegetable chowfun even though it didn't have too much vegetables compared to the brown sauce. read more

They are open for dining in and we enjoyed a couple lunch specials. My wife had the happy family with beef, chicken and shrimp, it was loaded with veggies. Tastes good: but to go portions seem challenged. I just got lunch combo with a wonton soup with two wonton. Shrimp and scallops combo seemed small as well but I didn't count; nor did I do replicate orders to get a statistical distribution. Wonder if in restaurant portions are more generous, or if it's the price of getting lunch prices. Tasty at least. But also surreal to see jalapenos in a shrimp and scallop. This place is such a pleasant surprise! Unassuming and typically furnished for a strip center restaurant. But the food is SO GOOD and the service is quick and efficient. I'm sure that some of you out there could use more attention (read "fawning") but if you want great food (nicely prepared, well-made, super tasty, large portions), reasonably priced (maybe low, in fact) in a nice atmosphere where you can hear yourself think, this is the place. Came here for lunch. Not the most amazing Chinese food in town however I'm willing to give it another chance. The inside is very clean and the wait staff were all very hospitable and attentive. Both my friend and I ordered an eggplant lunch dish and it was very tasty. Large portions. We both asked to make it less spicy than displayed on the menu. They accommodated. Food came out in a sufficient amount of time. The hot and sour soup was a bit watery and the dish had almost too much sauce sopping up the plate. We did take out from here on a Monday afternoon. We used the ordering portal on their website which was really easy to navigate and well organized. It was about $11 for the General Tso's chicken entree and $14 for the basil chicken dinner special. The general tso's chicken came with brown rice. The chicken was was very moist and had the perfect crisp to it. It didn't taste overly oily or fried which we really liked. It wasn't overly spicy or sweet. The jalapeños really gave it a nice kick. Only suggestion/comment would be to add a little bit more sauce. I like to mix the sauce that usually pools in the bottom of the container with the rice but there just wasn't enough to do so. The basil chicken dinner special came with two crab Rangoon's, hot and sour soup, and brown rice. Usually with specials you get a smaller portion of the entree but this felt like a full sized portion which was great. It was sautéed chicken with tons of veggies and basil. It was all cooked in a spicy tangy brown sauce. This dish had tons of sauce! Even with the amount of sauce the veggies stayed crunchy. The chicken was very tender and soft. You can really taste the fresh basil in the sauce and on the chicken. The brown rice was also cooked perfectly. It wasn't overly sticky or mushy. The hot and sour soup and crab Rangoon's were exactly what you'd expect them to taste like. Overall we really enjoyed our meal. We live right up the street so we'll definitely be ordering from them again! read more

We have been trying to order delivery from JJ Gardens for a few weeks now, ever since their menu appeared on our door, but keep forgetting they are closed on Saturdays. Today we were finally able to try it. I ordered General Tso's Tofu for myself, and added broccoli. We ordered Vegetable Fried Rice for our daughter, and my husband ordered Beef with Spicy Garlic Sauce. We also ordered a handful of appetizers and some Egg Drop Soup. Both of our entrees were spicy, which we love, but a bit too sweet for our tastes. The Vegetable Fried Rice was either forgotten or replaced with a side of plain Fried Rice. So, in essence, our daughter won't get much of a meal out of this. We tried to check the receipt to see if we were charged $8 for a tiny box of Fried Rice with a little egg in it, and found that we weren't given a receipt. The Vegetarian Summer Rolls would have been great, if they hadn't stuffed the entire roll full of salad lettuce. The peanut sauce was very tasty, although quite watery. My husband said the Crab Puffs were good, once you got past the fact that they didn't seem to have crab in them, only banana and cream cheese, which at first was a weird combo for him. However, the sweet and sour sauce that came with them was delicious. My husband also had a very difficult time understanding the woman on the phone, which may have been part of the Fried Rice confusion, even though he said she read the entire order back to him and it sounded correct. All in all, we aren't sure if we will order from here again. There are a few more dishes we want to try, but haven't decided if it is worth it. read more
