What is a "C Fu Yang"? And, why is a solitary letter there? Is this someone's name? A play on words? All I know is that it implies an Ancient Chinese Secret is in the works. Situated across Beechnut from the Lowe's and across the freeway from Meyerland Plaza, this Asian gourmet cafe offers a puzzle to the casual observer. Having hit a number of Chinese eateries in this town (e.g. my OCD: Obsessive Chinese Dining list), I wanted to try out something different. Different from Chinatown, different from the food that I've been eating lately, and different from the places I've been. Blame it all on the full moon, if you will, but I just had to bust out of a rut. The place has been open for 5 months now and has a glossy interior feel that tells you that "gourmet cafe" is the oeuvre and not your traditional garish red/gold American Chinese place. The booths are in dark wood and red pleather and the tables are dark wood. Various prints line the wall and small potted plants sit in the long vertical windows. Overall, an upscale but not stuffy feel. The two staff members who waited on me were gracious and welcoming. I opted for the Chicken with Garlic Sauce lunch special ($6.25), which came with choice of appetizer, soup, and either fried or steamed rice. The wonton soup was pleasant and the tasty cabbage-filled eggroll came out piping hot. The entree was pretty darn good with a melange of carrots, mushrooms, and snow peas rounding out the mild chicken. In sum, I never discovered the "mystery of the Orient" behind the business name on this trip. But, the food was freshly prepared and hot, service was warm and uptempo, and the decor was pleasingly comfortable - all at a good price point. 3.5 stars. Very good experience. Not sure about the negative reviews concerning flavor (or lack there of) on Yelp. The Mongolian beef was some of the best I've had. The only better Mongolian beef is Fortune Chinese in Texas City, TX. I know what you are thinking, but yes Texas City. If this place topped the beef with those crispy white noodles it would be perfect. Actually everything I had was very good. The wonton soup was very good. Just might be the best wonton soup I've ever had. They brought out fried wonton strips with the soup. Nice touch. I eat Chinese food several times per week and I tell you this was a very pleasant surprise. I should probably give them 5 stars not the 4 because I really don't see a flaw. A solid 3 star lunch. The lunch specials are a pretty good deal. I had the orange chicken, wonton soup and egg roll. The chicken was ok, all white meat and cooked well. The sauce was Ok as well, not great but not bad. The wonton soup was just average, I do like the fried wontons they serve with the soup. The spring roll was very good. I think they make them in house, it's not the frozen kind. Our waitress was friendly and kept our drinks full, everything was clean and I found a parking spot right out front. Placed an order today and went to pick it up, I questioned the order since I knew I had ordered something else. The response I received was " I repeated it back to you, you just weren't paying attention". First off I was paying attention not only did I order by the number but also by what I wanted. This is my go-to Chinese food restaurant in the Bellaire area. The portions are sizable and their lunch menu is quite reasonably priced. The lunches come with a soup and roll, which is common for a lot of Chinese restaurants in Houston. I had the hot and sour soup, a spring roll (try it with their mustard if you have a tolerance for spice, it is wonderful, and the spicy chicken plate. Everything was delicious, which is what I have come to expect from this place as the quality is amazingly consistent. I go there weekly and have tried several items on the lunch menu. I think my favorite is Happy Family, because it's a very generous portion of fresh vegetables, shrimp, beef, chicken, and I've even found a scallop in there! Worst customer service ever. My bf and I went in there and all of the tables were dirty but nobody cleaned up. The servers didn't come and say hi or anything. I have been eating here for many many years because it's close and the food is good. They have nice sized egg rolls and good flavors in their dishes. It is not low quality Chinese food like China Stix or Pei Wei. Here is the problem. After eating at this place many years, sometimes twice a week, I found a hair in my food. I had about half my meal left when I notified the workers. They took 50% off my meal and didn't even offer to make me a new one. Any decent establishment would have comped the entire meal and made a new one without asking. Especially for one of their loyalist customers. This simple mistake probably cost them my future business. A business in the service industry can't afford to lose customers because of dumb little things like that. I often bring one or two people with me, think of how that will affect their revenue.
