Had to leave another review unfortunately. I have dined in and been at this restaurant about 3 times this past week because I love the curry. Unfortunately I ordered a drink and filled it at the tea stations and once I got home while drinking the drink I noticed a roach floating in my drink. Not only did I immediately throw up it was small enough that is came out of the dispenser here. I was horrified and livid and when I called they were pretty nonchalant about it. Even though I had my drink comped the idea of drinking something for the past 10 minute not knowing their was a roach inside is extremely unsettling! I could've swallowed that! Gross! Good food but I won't be back. Yuck yuck yuck yuck

It's been a while since my last visit. Menu expanded and the interior is closed. Arrived during lunch time and place was buzzing. Placed my order at the counter for the bowl with grilled pork and egg roll with fried rice. After ordering, you get a number and find an open table. Service was fast. It did not take long before food arrived. The egg roll was crispy and came out hot. The pork was well marinated. It was cut a bit thick so some pieces were chewy. Came with the fish sauce that complements the meat. Fried rice was decent. Overall, this is decent place for Vietnamese fast food. Plenty of choices like banh mi, wings and others.

Roostar has been on my Houston radar for some time. If you've followed me over the years Yelp I'm Rooster to the local long term Austin peeps. Obvs, if you manipulate a vowel I was destined to try this place. First locations weren't exactly close to my adopted H-Town hood. We arrived on Saturday after a concert the night before in Louisiana. Hit some pawn shops and sat off Westheimer searching Yelp for something familiar or new. Don't know when this location opened but it's a welcomed edition to a growing local dynasty. Simple order at the counter process. Grabbed our drinks and waited for our food. Only one gripe. You order an appetizer; it comes with the entrees. It should come before your main dish arrives. With that said the chips and "dip" was a nice start. The provided curry (with beef) is seasoned perfectly. My box with noodles, pork, and eggroll was a nice dish. The fish sauce was subtle but flavorful. I also liked the sweet chili option as well. Her box with shaved Ribeye, salad, and eggroll also wowed. Expand to Austin!!

The food was delicious. The restaurant was clean. The service was overall good. I had an employee ignore me but everyone else was super attentive. Not sure if the employee just didn't hear or see me. I'd definitely return.

Roostar Vietnamese Grill has been in this location for a while and the whole time I haven't explored their menu and dishes. Many times I've come across these branches and they always seem to dilute the quality of the product that is produced for the masses. I have to say that Roostars or at least this location is legit. I've explored their menu and their bahn mi and the quality and size are worth getting. The previous times I've ordered their vermicelli bowls the first time I tried their grilled pork which is a fan favorite and this last time I ordered their pork belly. Each bowl along with their protein comes with lettuce, carrots, peanuts, fried onions, cilantro, cucumber and an egg roll. All very tasty with a balanced amount of protein and vegetables. I would also recommend a side of their egg rolls too. Perfect crispness and plenty of proper filling. I would also recommend their Thai Tea or Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Definitely give any Roostar Vietnamese Grill a try.

The Special Banh Mi, Grilled Pork Box, bulgogi fries
    Christy L.

The only reason Roostar is getting a four star is because of the special bahn mi. If it weren't for the bahn mi, I would not frequent rooster nearly as much. My sister and I ended up ordering the special bahn mi, the grilled pork box and the Bulgogi fries. The special bahn mi: this bahn mi featured a variety of cold cuts, pork belly and the best and most unique part of this sandwich: the pate. Everything was so delicious together. The bread was nicely buttered, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich also featured a nice array of fresh vegetables that paired well with the rich meats. I finished my meal and went back to order a bahn mi to-go. The grilled pork plate: this plate of meat was very subpar. The grilled pork was not flavorful enough. The texture was a little bit mushy, and overall there was nothing appealing about this plate that would set it above its competitors. The plate was expensive, and the portion size was also quite small. The Bulgogi fries: these fries were my least favorite dish of our meal. First of all I did not expect to get potato wedges. I feel like Bulgogi fries only go well with crispy straight fries. The Bulgogi on top with thick, not thin and saucy like Bulgogi should be. I will not be ordering this dish again. Overall, the service was nice and the ambiance inside gave off a good vibe. I would come back but, only for the bahn mi.

Ca Phe Sua Da is legit.

Roostar rocks. The bahn-mi is the thing to get. And the Vietnamese iced coffee. And the rice boxes. Everything is great! When I'm in Houston I typically will drive 30min to pay a visit to this place.

We had some goodies delivered and they were amazing. My wife enjoyed her grilled chicken box and a fried eggroll. We got some massive and tasty curled french fries for our granddaughter...she loved them. I thoroughly enjoyed a chopped ribeye Banh Mi with a fried egg and a dash of sriracha sauce, the fried egg was amazing, fried over medium with yolk running all over the other goodies. Their banh mi beef is far superior to most other contenders, tender with over the top flavor....we'll be back in person soon. We ordered over 30 dollars so we got a free blonde cinnamon brownie.

    Beef Alphabet Soup Bowl
    Tom L.

I came from Austin, I've seen tiktok videos of Roostar and the food is good, as advertised that I saw online. The alphabet soup is very good, basically it's the beef broth from pho so it's a familiar taste. Good flavors from the soup, a tad too oily for me. Nice salt balance. The banh mi is good, I've had plenty of banh mi in my life, this one is a good example. Fluffy bread, crispy exterior and nice soft inside. Definitely the bread is very good. The pate is yummy, earthy flavor and creamy at the same time. Love the overall mixture of pickled vegetables with the slices of meats. Great example of banh mi and the price point of $8 is not bad. I like the sandwich but not in love with it. I would have preferred slightly more meat, maybe 1 more layer will do. Every bite is more bread, the first I taste is bread, then the meats, and then the pickled vegetables. I would have preferred a slightly more pickle taste on the greens, more meat, and then we are talking! But yes good sandwich.

Did they get rid of the papaya salad!?

Yes. I asked cashier on 10-10-21 and they no longer have it.

Did you recently change your fried rice recipe?

i went in recently and the managers were complaining to kitchen staff in a group meeting that they are very inconsistent with food prep and execution. their food always tastes a little different because they don't stick to recipe.

Why did Roostar get rid of the Agave Vanilla Cream Soda (from Stubborn Soda)? That was the best one!

Pretty sure it was Stubborn Soda that discontinued it. No longer at Velvet Taco either.

Probably the best ramen I've ever had. They also have the garlic knock out (GKO) ramen which is similar but with chicken soup instead of vegan soup. I came here with my vegetarian friend and she was so surprised to see so many vegan ramen options. I think they have about 4 different ones and they all sound so good. I love matcha so I got the crispy matcha kinoko which is king oyster mushroom tempura with matcha sauce. I thought it was just ok. I also got the duck matcha ramen and I was not too impressed. It was unique but the taste was just ok. Maybe a little odd to have matcha in the broth. I would definitely come back for the VGKO ramen or the GKO ramen. I also saw they have other interesting ramen on the menu like spicy lamb ramen, wagyu Texas bbq ramen, and soupless ramen. The wait was not too bad on a weeknight but not sure about the weekends. This will be the place I would come back when I'm in the area.

It's been about a decade since my last review of Govinda's shortly after they first opened so it's…read morehigh time that I finally update that review after being a repeat customer over that time. Lots of things changed but Govinda's largely stayed the same. The decor hasn't changed but there is some wear and tear on the walls. Still clean, food still reliably good and has the homemade taste. They change up the menu daily and now they have 3 all vegan menu days to the week: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Plus, weekdays have a themed specials that aren't necessarily Indian. They post their menus online but weekday menus are posted the day of on their menu Instagram "ghmenu". Weekend menus are typically posted on Thursday. They are still a buffet so service is minimal but it is pretty good but no frills. Unfortunately, they got rid of their salted lassi years ago so they only have mango lassi now along with mint lemonade for cold drinks. Price has gone up as well to around $18 (a little more for holidays and weekends) per person but that's to be expected. Carry out is $16.95 per meal (large take out container plus a soup, roti, salad, papadam, and dessert). You can opt of out of items but you'll still pay the same price. In the past decade, I still love their food but I can no longer eat as much to make it worth it to dine in so we've been getting take out (we took a brief break from buffets but I missed them so we went the take out route). One take out meal lasts me 2 meals at home so it's a no brainer (husband finishes the take out container in one sitting though). Plus, I have kids now and they definitely aren't good eaters so it didn't make sense for them to eat in. Over the last few months in Houston, we typically go once every 2-3 weeks because my picky kids absolutely love their saag paneer. I got them al a carte saag paneer ($10 for a half container, $5 for a half container of rice, $7 for a small container of an entree) until someone there suggested I just order an entree because it's the same price but you get more. And their plastic containers are limited. I started doing it but then one day, the main guy (manager?) wasn't happy since the big container was just rice, saag paneer, and maybe a little bit of dal makhani. I was a little miffed because if we ate in and all they ate was saag paneer, it would be okay. That aside, I noticed someone mentioned food allergies. The reason why I order Al a carte and segregate their take out container is because my youngest is allergic to wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, avocado, pineapple, and kiwi. Their food is usually labeled but I like asking to be sure. On days they serve something that contains nuts, we just don't go (unless it's only in the dessert). My kids usually like the same things and we only go on non-vegan days. The general consensus is vegan days' food tends to be spicier. My youngest is okay with spice, but my eldest who is super picky won't eat it if it's too spicy. Plus, I love their makai kofta. If I'm in town and I see they have makai kofta, we are THERE. However, I noticed that their menu isn't always set in stone. One day, they didn't have my favorites but we went because I didn't want to cook and THEY HAD MALAI KOFTA. I was so pleased. If you love potatoes, their batada vada is divine (but moderately spicy). I also enjoy the BBQ tofu but they usually only offer it on vegan days so I haven't had it in a long while. They have special menus on holidays but they're vegan so I have unfortunately never tried any holiday menus. We moved but when I'm in town, we make sure to drive up north to eat here at least once. We absolutely miss Govinda's and my kids ask for their beloved saag paneer even when we're not in Houston. I should ask if they can part with the recipe! Haha.... We ordered catering in 2024 for my eldest's birthday! Even the non-vegetarians enjoyed it and you get a lot of food for less than $500. You choose from certain dishes but it still covered many of my Govinda favorites, if not all. Honestly, we'd do it again just for fun with close friends and family and have leftovers for at least a week after splitting it up with everyone. Price has probably increased though.

The grounds of the temple is well manicured and neat with flowers. A big red sign read, "Govinda" was positioned so that I wouldn't miss it. As soon as I walked in at lunch time, the restaurant was damn near empty with only two families. The host immediately sat me at a table front of the buffet line. There was a strong lingering smell of pine-sol and Mr. Clean in the air. Of course, that indication told me that the restaurant was clean. The items on the buffet line was plenty, but limited. I got the rice, tofu curry, chaat marsala, and some vegetables. Everything except for the chaat was bland. It wasn't very easy to eat while the smell of cleaning supplies was in the air. It reminded me of sitting in a bucket of cleaning chemicals while eating a meal. The tofu curry tasted only like turmeric, but no salt or pepper or anything. The rice was super bland. The chaat marsala was very tasty and well seasoned. I finished off with desserts which both options were tasty. I hope to return to try their holiday menu, but I think today was a bad day for the cooks.

You order online hosted by hot plate and pick up at your scheduled time/date at their house. I ordered it but someone else picked up around 2 hours later. You get an automated text when it's ready and you text when you're there. For special requests, you can call/text the number as well; he was pretty helpful and responsive and mentioned to my brother in law that he personally made sure everything had no alliums at pick up. As a note: my family consists of allium-free vegetarians (with one vegan) so we asked ahead of time what our options were before we went for it. He (I really should have gotten his name) gave us a list of rolls that could be made allium free and we chose from them so you could say they do have an allium free menu upon request. We pretty much got almost everything on his list. For 5 adults, we ordered a total of 10 rolls: LOW-KEY LOKI (2) CLASSIC SPICY TUNAH (2) NIKCO ROCK N ROLL SPICY MAMI, HOT TAMALE SPICY DRAGON FIRECRACKER (2) When we opened the boxes, it turns out that he included an extra roll of SPICY MAMI, HOT TAMALE as well as a small container of seaweed salad which I thought was really nice of him! Or maybe we spent too much or there's some buy 10 rolls get 1 free promotion I was unaware of, haha. It was an unexpected surprise. I also have 2 kids but one has multiple food allergies and the other one is picky. She wanted a sweet potato roll, but it's not on the menu so we rolled up some seaweed rice rolls for them ahead of time so they weren't left out. I didn't bring up my kids because we wanted to ease in with the allium free request and go from there. Plus, one of the food allergens is avocado and that was found in almost every roll. On that note, there's an option to make it gluten-free on each item's page, which is pretty awesome. There's also an option to use soy paper instead of seaweed and to add extra ingredients at additional cost. My family shared everything so my plate was a mix and I honestly lost track of what I was eating at the time for personal notes. But honestly? Everything was delicious. Sushi was the last thing I gave up before becoming vegetarian and I'm picky with the sushi I eat now. These are very good and I must say if I lived in Houston, I'd order again. I do wish there was a place to sit or picnic nearby, but this worked as well. (We all congregated at a house.) There was one roll that definitely had a kick to it. Oddly enough, SPICY MAMI was not it. My nose tends to run with spicy food and I didn't get to that point but it was close after that one spicy piece. Overall, a great experience. Our rolls were $8 to $17 each, 8 pieces per roll. It was around $27.20 per person before tips and tax/fees from hot plate ($7.35). They were nicely packed complete with edible orchid flowers, and personal cups of ginger and wasabi as well as chopsticks and soy sauce packets. We finished everything. This certainly wasn't cheap but when is sushi affordable enough to be a daily thing? I do wish there weren't service fees added on top, but I guess the platform needs support too. Delicious and something to try whether or not you're vegan. I hope to order again our next time in town. Many thanks to the chef for the excellent experience and his help!
