Return visit and very very pleased with our take out meal from JL Sushi and Kitchen. Great prices for their Lunch Bentos with delicious and well constructed sushi rolls, this is a go-to in North Van! We Ordered: Beef Teriyaki Bento - huge portion of tender and tasty beef with a california roll, rice, salad, tempura, gyoza and miso soup for $15! There isnt anything around with that price for the quality we got today! California roll was simple and executed very well. House Special Roll - tempura shrimp, crab meat and avocado on the inside with salmon and avocado on top and topped with spicy tuna and crunchy bits. I liked how they were light on the rice and quite generous with the spicy tuna here. Chopped Scallop Roll, Negitoro Roll - both very good with ample amount of filling and very fresh fish. Chicken Karaage - loved the sauce that came with this chicken. Very tasty too. Overall, great place for sushi in North Vancouver and with the number of choices you have around the area of Lower Lonsdale, it can be hard to choose but I will continue to come to JL for sushi! read more

Went here while visiting North Van because it was the cheapest sushi within 10 minutes of the Shipyards! Really glad we visited too because the sushi and tempura we got was good! The prawn tempura was perfectly cooked, the prawns were soft and juicy, and the batter gave the perfect crunch. We got a bonus green bean in the mix too! Everything was great for my soft mouth. The California roll was delicious, and the dynamite roll was okay. It tasted a lot just like a California roll with a tempura in the middle.. I usually expect more--like cucumber at the very least. The house special roll was similar--tasted like a California roll with some extra toppings. The tuna and spicy mayo with yam crunch on top.. was Not good. We ended up just throwing it away. Felt so wasteful but it was inedible for us. The salmon oshi was really good! the rice was a little too dense for my preference but it was a good ratio between rice and salmon. If this spot was more expensive, I may rate it three stars, but the price is too good not to commend! Service was good. We were left alone most of the time, which I usually like. We were stuck in North Vancouver as both the bridges were clogged with traffic so we had walked around Lonsdale Quay and chilled on the pier for a bit, then came here for dinner. The service is great and the food quality was good. Because we were hungry, we kind of ordered more than we should have as we ordered the aburi white snow roll, garlic butter mussels, Lionking specialty roll, and JL poke bowl for the two of us. Our stomach was making the orders. :) The poke bowl was larger than we thought as normally they are a bit smaller at other places, so we thought it would be smaller too. You order the same way as other places of choosing a base, your meat, your vegetables, your toppings and then your sauce. Keep in mind that some items add $1 for it, such as masago, shrimp tempura, etc. Because we ordered a lot of food, we kind of ate about 1/3 of this and took the rest home The aburi was average size but it had plenty of crabmeat and the crunchy onion and mayo balances well with the flavors. Not sure how they made the mayo or which brand they use but my wife loved it as she really likes torched mayo on things. The garlic butter was juicy and you can definitely taste the garlic and butter as they were swimming in it. Even though there was a lot of butter and garlic, it was still really good. I am happy to write about this neighbourhood Japanese restaurant. This is not Miku but they make some serious sushi and probably the best sushi restaurant in North Vancouver. Their food is freshly prepared and really delicious. Service is always excellent! I typically have their lunch set as it is very good value. For only $14 the set comes with tempura, teriyaki beef or chicken, California Roll (add $1 if substitute dynamite roll), gyoza and miso soup. I tried their aburi sushi and they are just as good. There are a number of lunch sets to choose from that are under $18. They are offering a 10% discount when you order take out. We got take out from here, and they had easy ordering online with a bonus 10% off. We got their sockeye salmon oshi, tonkatsu curry, prawn tempura, and yam avocado roll. Their oshi was alright but would have to say Miku/Minami/Green Leaf were better. Their jalapeño on top was also extremely spicy! The curry was delicious and the flavours really came through. The tonkatsu could have been better breaded but really no complaints. The prawn tempura was fried perfectly and very fresh. I did wish that there was more avocado in the yam avocado roll. You can tell they care about presentation and flavour. Their miso is the best I have found. This was definitely a stand-out sushi place amidst the many pretty good sushi places all over Greater Vancouver. Very close to Lonsdale Quay, with two other sushi places on the same block. It was nice to see that they have a dedicated vegetarian menu on a big sign as you walk in (first picture), which is what clinched this place for us. We ordered a goma-ae, which was excellent and came with a taro chip on top (had not seen that before), and the veggie sushi lunch combo. The matango roll (avocado + Japanese mushroom) was a clear stand-out -- whatever they do to the mushroom is just sublime. Super friendly service. On the expensive side at $14 for the lunch combo, though they give you 10% for take-out. Definitely worth a try when in Lower Lonsdale. read more

This restaurant made me want to write a review for the first time in several years. The food was really good and price was reasonable. I ordered chicken teriyaki which had crispy skin and delicious sauce. It was served with a mini candle under its dish which I was not sure whether it could keep the food warm or served as a decoration. Overall ambience was satisfying. Hands down the best tuna and salmon sashimi I've ever had! So fresh and tender! The spicy tuna roll had great flavour but the mashed texture of the tuna was a bit off putting. When we mentioned it to the server she told the chef (as she should). He was a bit aggressive when he came to talk to us but that's not going to stop us from going back. I understand he's proud of his work! Tasty toro nigiri also. I was disappointed by the sunomono. It's one of my favourite dishes and the choice of noodle was questionable and the flavour of the liquid was a bit bland. The gyoza had a really good flavour they just needed a bit more time In the pan. But I will go back for the sashimi and I really do want to try more items on the menu! They are consistently awesome except for an occasional little thing. The only thing I've ever ordered that did not taste fresh was ikura (red caviar). Their sockeye is consistently great and they hardly ever have brown avo in their rolls. Customer service is quite solid also. Being of Japanese heritage, a veteran of numerous business trips to Japan, and a self-confessed foodie of a very wide range of cuisines, I am not easily impressed. But since my first visit several months ago JL Sushi & Kitchen has been my absolute go to Japanese restaurant. My wife & I have dined there, by ourselves & with friends, ordered takeout, and ordered sushi platters & other dishes when entertaining friends at home. A total of well over 20 experiences, every one of them unfailingly positive. JL's dishes are visual & delectable delights. To diners who normally restrict their choices to the usual teriyaki & sushi selections, I recommend that you broaden your horizons by trying dishes such as takoyaki & Korean seafood pancake.
