Steakhouses out here are a really different culture out here in LA--people don't dress up and the way they serve the food, it feels like a course menu waiting almost 30-45 minutes between each menu item, but the ambience feels like a dark cabin at a retreat site. Def weird, but quality of the meat was really good. Def would pass on the sausage--it was very dry and the Mac and cheese -- the cheese and butter congealed and was sitting out for a bit before it was served to us, but the pork ribs were cooked to perfection with the crispy salted skin & the Spencer's cooked medium was so soft and melts with each bite. We finally made it to Jocko's after nearly 20 years of family in SLO raving about it. The Spencer steak was hands down one of the BEST steaks I've had in my life. We were lucky and snagged a last minute reservation during an impromptu trip for our Anniversary. We weren't sure what to expect, but I'm so happy we finally listened to our food loving family. We showed up a bit early for our reservation and of course went to the bar for a cocktail to whet our appetites. First impression... Old school, casual, almost divey feel. You definitely dont need to dress up here, which I appreciate. The bar was packed, but we found a spot and had a couple drinks while we waited. Despite how busy they were, the bartender was friendly and we didn't wait long for our drinks. When our table was ready, they came and grabbed us from the bar. The starters were simple. Salsa, really good ice cold pickles, and crackers. Interesting combo for sure, but nice light snacking before an amazing, filling dinner. Im not going to lie, I was a bit skeptical when I saw there was only lite salt on the tables, and worried the steaks might be under seasoned. No need to worry. I regret not buying the seasoning before we left haha. We agreed that what we received were 2 of the most perfect steaks we've ever eaten. Husband had the filet rare, and I had the 20oz Spencer M/R. Oh man. I honestly dont remember ever having such a tender, juicy, beefy steak in my life. If you like cuts with a little fat on it, the Spencer is it. It was seasoned well and the fat was perfectly rendered. The only way I can describe it is beef butter lol. The filet was perfectly tender and well seasoned, but the Spencer blew us away. We ordered the broccoli and loaded hashbrowns as our sides and shared. It was perfect. The takeaway, we will always return to Jocko's when we visit the area. Went there at around 5pm with a bunch of friends. Got a recommendation from a friend's pastor; we drove ~1 hr to get here. Tons of ppl, was very packed, and had to wait ~15-20 mins for a seat (and even then we were lucky). We ordered and had to wait at least 1 hr for the food. The salad came early and it was average. Then the ribeye steak came. It was hardly seasoned, basically plain. And the meat was kinda chewy, tough. Apparently, I got the short end of the stick cuz one of my friends said theirs was fine. Maybe a mistake cuz they were in a rush cuz they were so packed. The meat was definitely medium at best, even though I ordered medium rare. The spare ribs were pretty decent and surprisingly went well with the salsa. The fact that it came with ice cream is nice. But you definitely paid for it with the price of the entrees. I happened to be working in Santa Maria for a couple months and some coworkers were raving about this place who are locals so of course I had to come check them out when I heard they were grilling over oak, Santa Maria Style. Boy, they did not disappoint. Stopped by and ordered the 16oz top sirloin and for $39.99, YOU GET A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF FOOD. You defenitly get your bang for your buck. But what I loved most was how AMAZING my steak was and cooked to perfection! Also got to try the languica which was spectacular. Both dishes a 10/10. I can see why this is a local staple. Wait time was LONG even with reservations. Service was fine. It was super busy and noisy, but expected as it was our fourth time there and everyone seems to still love this place. Ribeye steaks all around (4). Ordered them medium, and they all came out medium-well. Ugh! Didn't want to send them back because it took a long time for them to come. Salad portions shrunk. They used to come on bigger plates, now served in small bowls. Garlic bread was fine. Beans lacked flavor and were pretty soupy. A scoop of ice cream is still included at the end and the salted caramel was really good. Seems like meat quality isn't as it was. Very disappointed with our experience this Father's Day Sunday at Jocko's. The weekly Sunday special, which many of us specifically came for, was not available. There was no notice on the restaurant's website, and nothing was mentioned when I made the reservation. We were a party of eight, and six of us ordered the Sunday special because we expected it to be available as advertised. After taking our orders, the waitress returned and rudely informed us that they were not serving the special and that we would need to order something else. This information should have been communicated before we placed our orders. Instead, we were left scrambling to choose different meals after already deciding what we wanted. My family has been coming to Jack's for more than 20 years, and we have never been treated so poorly. The waitress lacked basic hospitality and customer service skills, especially on a busy holiday when many families were celebrating Father's Day. This experience was extremely disappointing. The restaurant should do a better job communicating menu changes and provide additional hospitality training to its staff. We called in our order as we usually do. Never had issues. Today I'm so disappointed. Steak plate came without the little bread pieces inside. .I was bummed. So I tried a piece without the bread and oddly assumed super salty. I didn't think anything of it I just thought maybe it was because I was sick things don't taste the same. I continued separating the rest of the order and everything seemed fine . I did find 2 pieces of bread wrapped so I'm assuming this is the bread for my steak plate. Well the other bag had the most of the little cups spilled inside. As I was looking over the receipt to make sure everything was there I noticed on the receipt there was a request for extra seasoning. I never asked for extra seasoning we did ask for well done. Of course I called the restaurant and ask them if things have changed and why my receipt would have that I requested extra seasoning. We still don't know why that happened but a really sweet girl named Gabby answered the phone and offered to make me another order but I was already home so I wasn't trying to go back. Our waitperson was friendly but repeatedly we asked for things (another beer, bbq sauce for the spareribs) and they never came. Our entire section did not have a waitperson or busser in it for a solid 20 minutes and finally I just had to walk back to the kitchen and politely ask somebody for barbecue sauce. And when I order a 60 dollar steak and ask for medium RARE and I get my steak and there is literally zero pink in the middle, (it was closer to well done and tasted like a deliciously smoked hockey puck), guys you need more staff on hand and they need to pay more attention to what they are doing. The ONE thing you should nail with EVERY SINGLE ORDER is the temp of the steak. Period - this is why ppl come to your place. Ribs were great, but not sure if I'll be back. read more

This restaurant is located in the middle of nowhere right across the street from a church. It's a stopover right out of a horror movie. There's no other establishments around except for the Fields to Farm across the street. Not sure what that is, but I would not want to be the only person here at night. There's a paved parking lot and also a flow over dirt lot right next door. I made reservations for a Sunday on my way back from Paso. Walked in and you are hit with the red oak smoke. Right when you walk in, the bar room is right in front of you and there are 2 dining rooms to the left and right side. We were brought over to the dining room on the left and you can see the Santa Maria style grill and the wonderful red oak smoke. The room is dark with the only light coming through the windows on the street and lighting in place of trim. I had to use my iPhone light to be able to read the menu. But I already looked at the menu online the night before so I had an idea of what to get. Ended up ordering the fried mushrooms, sweet breads & 20oz. Spencer ribeye. While waiting, our server brought out some dill pickles with ice in it and salsa for the steak. The slices of dill pickles was a thick cut and a little salty for me, but definitely needed to pair with the mushrooms and sweet breads. The fried pickles made it our table with a side of homemade ranch. You can smell the mushrooms right away and I really like how hard the batter is that it creates a shell, thus avoiding it from getting soggy. It was also seasoned well and went great with that ranch. By the way, the ranch is pretty good also. Not too thick or watery. The sweet breads came out and it was already cut in to smaller pieces. I was hoping that it was going to be cooked on the grill, but instead, they were fried up and were accompanied by chunks of garlic bread. I thought the sweet bread was a little chewy, but not overcooked. I think if it was grilled, it would have tasted way better there would be pieces of charred end pieces. Yummo!! Next came the steak and boy, it's a pretty thick cut too. It came with beans and more garlic bread. The garlic bread was more like garlic toast. It was toasted to a nice texture and doused with garlic butter. It was pretty good. The beans were bland and didn't have much flavor to it. The ones in the can would have been better. The ribeye however, was a little heavy on the salt, but still had good flavor from the red oak. Our server was awesome and she came by to check up on us pretty often. Overall, I am so glad I came here and will try to squeeze this place in on my way back from Paso. Don't let the surroundings scare you off. Jocko's is a must stop if you are within a 30 mile radius of Nipomo. They specialize in cooking steaks and chops over a red oak pit which imparts a great smokey flavor to the meats. I have their steaks, chops and beef ribs. Each one of these meats are cooked to perfection. Portions are huge and can be shared. Along with your meat entree, you also get a salad, crackers, chilled pickles, their famous pinquito beans, potatoes and an ice cream for dessert. They are a casual place. Just come as you are. But, make sure you make reservations on weekends and holidays as they do get very busy. Service has been good every time I've been there. It's a great place for steaks. This is not a fancy steakhouse but you'll get a better quality steak here than most of the "fancy" places you've been to. The value cannot be beat. My go-to dish is the Spencer 16 oz ($47.95). With it, you get a chilled garlic dill pickle and crackers/ homemade salsa appetizer (the homemade salsa is REALLY good), salad , grilled garlic bread and bean size and your choice of dude with the steak (baked potato is always my pick). The oak grilled steak truly has a unique flavor that can't be beat. Honestly I don't think it needs any additional sauces. Then for dessert you get your pick flavor of ice cream. With all this food, I usually come hungry and still take home leftovers. Another little secret about this place is wine. You can bring your own and pay a low corkage fee. I actually bought the Jocko's Red Blend wine for $26 last time I was there and it was really good. Also, love that this restaurant now exists on OpenTable! So much easier to make a reservation. FOOD: I haven't really tried much variety from this place besides pure steak. I always get the Spencer (ribeye) cut that comes in 8 oz, 16 oz or 20oz. That steak can last me the entire day to be honest lol. It's massive but I usually take the leftovers and share it with my dad. It's a good chunk of delicious meat. Simply seasoned but delicious. As for the sides, they're okay. I ordered a baked potato and to add cheese and bacon it's an additional $4.50. Pretty pricey for a bland baked potato even with the added toppings. I should've just picked fries lol. The salad has always been great along with the amount of dressing that comes with it lol. The ice cream at the end is just a great palate cleanser choice. Garlic bread, pinquito beans and salsa are included in the meal and a great addition to the meal. My total for the 20 oz spencer with just a regular baked potato would have been $58.20. SERVICE: We had a large group (9 people) and so it took a long time for our order to come out. We figured they wanted to serve our meals all at the same time. Unfortunately, part of the meal ended up cold (not the server's or cook's/pitmaster's fault). It just so happened we had a large group and it was what it was. It honestly didnt bother me much. The server tried her best to keep up, we had a reservation and it was dinner time so it was packed even on a weekday! She was patient and kept her cool despite the dinner rush. Otherwise, the service was fine. AMBIANCE: This place badly needs an expansion. It is so packed and for people with claustrophobia I can see why this can set them off. Tables are so close together. Barely any space to walk through. It can be a lot of stimulation for other people. Not very well lit place so if that's not your thing, you might want to try a different place. The lighting and ambiance does match the theme of a saloon/steakhouse I suppose. Very old-time like. It can get very loud depending on the time you make your visit. Hours are 5pm-9pm. I recommend making a reservation because wait times can be pretty ridiculous even on weekdays. It seats quite a bit of people but it's just that popular I suppose lol. It's a staple in this area. I recommend trying it at least once. It really is an experience. Is it worth the price? Depends on what you get. The quality of meat really is remarkable though. Ordered a Spencer Rib-eye, 8 oz steak and it was extremely disappointing, 'tough as a boot' and hard to cut even with their serrated steak knives. The steak had no flavor. Impossible to believe this was a rib-eye, as I have tasted pan-fried round steak with more flavor and easier to cut and chew. Also had a glass of red wine which was terrible. The French fries were good flavor and a large amount. We had blue cheese dressing on a very basic lettuce and beet salad and almost immediately got a gut ache. The beans were marginal. Service was ok, but our table was left uncleared from a previous diner, dirty glasses, etc. Our waitress was attentive but dealing with a bad product. Most of our food was untouched, we paid the bill, tipping the waitress for her work, and left never to return again. A 'one and done'. read more

We recently took a weekend road trip to Pismo Beach with our cousins for some adult time away from the kids. While deciding where to eat, someone recommended Jocko's Steakhouse, which has been around since the 1920s (if I remember correctly; if not, I apologize). The setup of this restaurant is definitely non-conventional, almost as if it was an old office building converted into a restaurant. Despite the odd layout, the place is packed, so I recommend calling for reservations. We had a reservation for 7:45 PM on a Thursday night and got seated around 8:15 PM. This place is busy for a reason--it's good and has excellent service. My wife and I weren't very hungry due to a late lunch, so we ordered the 20-ounce ribeye steak with a baked potato, a bowl of beans, and some garlic bread. I like to be honest in my reviews, and this restaurant deserves a solid four stars for a great overall experience. We ordered the steak medium rare, but it was unevenly cooked--about half was medium rare and the other half was rare. I don't mind rare, but my wife ended up with the rarer portion, which she didn't enjoy as much. The baked potato was good, and the beans were okay but didn't suit my taste. The garlic bread was great. We also tried the wood-fired artichokes as an appetizer. This was my first time having a wood-fired or smoked artichoke, and it was pretty good with a nice flavor. I appreciated that they trimmed all the prickly parts. Upon being seated, they bring out salsa, a bunch of crackers, a tray of butter, and a large garlic dill pickle sliced into chunks for everyone to share. I was a bit confused about the crackers and butter, expecting warm soft bread, but perhaps I missed something as it was my first visit. Despite these minor confusions, it was a good experience. Our server was fantastic, very friendly, and even brought extra bread for me to take back to the hotel for a midnight snack. For dessert, I had Italian spumoni ice cream, a special treat I really enjoy but don't find very often. The restaurant is solid, even though the ribeye wasn't cooked evenly. I would definitely come back here again and encourage others to do so as well. I should have mentioned at the beginning that they cook the steaks and artichokes over a red oak-fired grill. The wonderful oak smell hits you as soon as you walk in, adding to the deliciousness of the food. The restaurant isn't cheap; our meal with one appetizer came out to $78. We had reservations for 3 on Sunday @ 1:00 Feb 22. There was a line already forming when we arrived. The line went very quickly and we were promptly seated. Our server Faith arrived within minutes and we ordered 2 appetizers and 3 cocktails. Faith was amazing. Very professional, friendly and witty. She made our meal (and cocktails), very special and we appreciate her attentiveness and outgoing spirit. Our cocktails were perfect. We had the Armadillo eggs and fried mushrooms. Both were served very quickly and were hot and tasty. The dill pickles they bring to your table, are the best tasting pickles we've ever had. Very crunchy and well balanced. I had Jocko's dip with a side of horseradish. It was excellent. My friends had a 16 oz steak sandwich and shrimp dinner. They loved every bite, including all of the generous side dishes. TL;DR: LONG WAIT TIME ON WEEKENDS BE ADVISED. good place to come to get a whole lot of food, tasty for a good price. A local favorite it seems. Not upscale, come casual and bring the family. Be prepared for a long wait. Little on the noisier and busier side. I would like to give this place 4 stars, however we were dissatisfied with the fact that we had made advanced reservations for 7:30pm, arriving a few minutes to let the host know we arrived, and were not seated until 7:50pm :/ there were other guests who we saw go to the host several times to see their spot in line. Hunger aside, they start you off with crackers, salsa, and pickles. Out waitress was kind but they had a full house so she did her best to check in on us. The portions are huge and steaks were delicious which made up for the longer wait time. I think I'd give this place another chance if I'm in the area, now that I know what I know now. The filet was cooked to perfection. The lobster tails were grilled on the pit they were very tasty and honestly for the price the lobster tails were huge. I honestly was full on just one. The service was amazing I honestly haven't had service as I did tonight from Jockos in a few years. read more

This is another example of the rating not matching reality. This place is absolutely awesome. First off make a reservation for this place its extremely busy. Food is awesome. I am not a ribeye fan and I became a believer in ribeye after having the steak here. Cooked awesome well flavored. For the price I challenge anyone to get a better steak someone else. Loved that they served fresh pickles with the meal. Salad and baked potatoes was perfect. Service was perfect both times we have went. Definitely my go steak spot in the Santa Maria Valley. We went to Jockos on Father's Day to treat my dad and husband. Pro tip- get the first reservation of the day! We had a super friendly and attentive server named Danny! My husband and I split the Large Spencer which came out a perfect medium and we had with a baked potato. The asparagus was also a yummy choice! My kids loved their cheeseburger and chicken strips. We've been coming here for over a decade and love everything about Jockos! read more

A disappointing experience that fell well below of what you would expect from a supposedly quality steakhouse. Our appetizer came out with our entrees. The server forgot to put in the appetizer order. The food was mostly tasty, but lukewarm when brought to the table. The only thing hot was the baked potato. It was also our wedding anniversary and I requested a small cake/dessert if possible when making the reservation. There wasn't even an acknowledgment of my request. It is also weird that the waitress stands over you while you're paying. We won't be making the trip again. Far better options and ambiance elsewhere. read more
