My boss uses Joey's about two or three times a year so they came highly recommended by her. I have to say my interactions with them from booking the reservation to moving things into my new apartment, were professional and above board. Joey's rates were reasonable in comparison to other quotes I received. The communication and service was consistent. They accommodated me with no problem when I needed to change my moving time from the morning to the afternoon. The movers, Sam G. and Adam, called me when they were en route. They arrived at my storage unit, asked me to sign some documents, and told me I could leave them to handle everything...which they did! They moved my furniture out of storage and into a one-bedroom apartment (on the 4th floor of a walk-up building) in three hours. Moves are always stressful. If you hire movers, you want them to communicate as often as necessary, be professional, be timely, and of course, move all of your stuff (cheap or expensive) intact. That was my experience with this company. So much so, when they asked me to write a review if I was happy with the service I received, I wrote it on the same day. Unfortunately, we had to up n' move sooner than we had hoped, due to the fact that our previous landlord was shady and incompetent. FORTUNATELY, Joey's was available on short notice, and once again they provided excellent service at a very, very reasonable price. They showed up exactly on time and got it all done . I was impressed by Joey's movers! I moved to Chicago 3 months ago and last minute realized that I would not be able to take all my stuff up 3 stories. I tried calling many different moving companies to get responses that they couldn't do last minute, I had to pay additional fees, pay for them to drive even though I didn't need it. I was impressed with Joey's because they worked with me last minute, I paid a flat fee for 2 hours. They came a little before the appointment time, took 45 minutes to take my stuff up - which would have taken us hours! I was moving my parents from CA to the Chicagoland area and needed help figuring it all out. Joseph was so very helpful, and promised to get to CA on December 9th, and deliver the goods on December 16th, which he did. The contract stated that they movers would be at the house at 8 am to start the move out. At 9:30 am I called him and no answer...tried him so many times to figure this out...he finally called me with the news that they would be there at 5:30 PM!!! I was so very angry...hours later he told me they would be there at 2:00 pm, they finally showed at 4. When I asked Joseph why no one called to let me know his reply was they didn't have your number! The nerve of him...he for sure knew they were going to be late and as the owner should have let me know. I asked for a little financial compensation and he wouldn't budge. Thank god for Pete and Pierre! They were amazing...packed up everything to perfection, not one thing was broken at the unpack! And then the unpack with Pete and Maurice was as fabulous as the pack out. If it wasn't for their amazing work I would have called my CC company and filed a complaint. Who likes a move? NOBODY likes a move. Petey, Rick and Ricky made a difficult process as good as it could possibly be. They arrived right on time, assessed the situation, listened to our concerns and went to work. They were careful, as quick as caution allowed, very considerate and pleasant. No damage done whatsoever, they finished right on time (actually a little ahead of schedule) and Petey explained all the remaining charges. They could not move one couch down our tiny, old-house stairway, trying EVERYTHING they could and apologizing - not their fault! We hired Joey's for the second time, about three years after our first move with them. No complaints - the guys were great just like the first time! Even in the middle of winter during a snowstorm. I specifically asked for, and payed extra for the guys to put down floor protection at the new house to ensure the hardwood floors did not get damaged and keep the carpet clean. Worked great. I also plastic wrapped some of my furniture before they arrived to help prevent scratches. They were upfront in telling me that some of my crappier ikea pressboard furniture was not covered for damage, and sadly, one of my $10 LACK side tables did sustain some damage, but it's not a big deal. read more

I hired Joey's Movers on a recommendation from the staff at my mother's nursing facility to move a few pieces of her furniture downtown to my storage unit. The two movers assigned arrived on time, seemed very thorough and although it took a bit longer than I would have thought, protected and packed up the bedroom items and moved them into their truck for the trip downtown. Once we arrived at the public storage unit, it went off the rails. The storage unit was full of other items, but appropriate space had been cleared and prepared to receive the dresser and queen bed with mattress, frame and box spring. The older of the two movers became annoyed and rather verbal that the unit already had items stored inside and that the items wouldn't fit. I tried to assure him that we had measured carefully and started to suggest how to store the items but he became quite snotty with me and basically told me my advice was not welcome. His irritation remained right out front as they moved the items in and guess what - they did fit. I would not recommend this particular mover. read more

They damaged interior at pick up location in front of my eyes. The employee said he would get claim form and instead contacted the receiving party to whom items were being delivered and bullied them not to file claim. They are likely to say damage did not a occur , figment of my imagination , but be warned they are cheap and cheerful - not cautious. Several years ago we had items moved by them and several days later we were robbed. While I have no evidence to connect the two events - we always had the doubt. I could be wrong but where there is smoke there is fire! read more

Kudos to Joey's Movers. After a PODs unit was dropped off about 500 feet from my storage unit, David and Rocky really took charge of the situation. They were professional in the way the handled themselves as well as the the way they packed and organized the storage unit. They made sure they didn't get hurt and they made sure none of my furniture was damaged. I had a great experience with them, and I will definitely use Joey's Movers when I move again. read more

We used Joey's to move again, this time from our townhome to a Single family home nearby. They sent four movers and these guys were busy, even as prepared as we were, it still took them 5 hrs and a second truck to get us out of the house. Everyone was really nice. The next day we moved into our new place, everybody showed up on time and they were ready to unload as we took possession of our new place. Mainly the same crew as the day before, we have way too much stuff, but they were great about getting it all to the rooms/floors as indicated. Ended up going into dinner time, so we fed them and they kept moving along as they had pizza. Hope not to have to use them anytime soon, only because we found a great new home to call ours. read more

We had Joey's come out and do our move this past Saturday and I was beyond impressed with the two guys that moved our things up to our new third floor condo. I scheduled a sofa moving with this company on Saturday, August 2 at 7 am. They did not show up. I called the office and was told that due to a pull off of an earlier job, they are running behind the schedule. No apology whatsoever for not coming. Considering the wait time for finding other movers, I agree to the rearrangement to the next day. Sunday has passed, no one showed up or bothered to call explaining why the did not come. Enjoying a moving experience would sort of be like enjoying a dentist right? Well thats what I always thought until this smooth move was performed by Joeys. We redid our floors and this company helped move everything out of our house into storage. The speed in which it was done was amazing. I literally came home from work and was shocked. I think they also cleaned up to because my house looked spotless. They were flexible as my dates changed during the process (Thanks Flooring Contractor!) and put back everything where they took it from. Joseph Jr was accessible via mobile throughout the process and stopped by randomly to see how things were going. I have no idea if there price was competitive because I felt so comfortable that I was in good hands I signed the paperwork after the initial walk though. Poor planning, not enough furniture protection, did not send check for damages that they agreed to pay. I hired Joeys Movers and Trucking, Inc. In Skokie, Illinois for two days. Day 1 was to pack and protect items. Day 2 was the move. On Day 1 I specifically asked them to bubble wrap all pictures on the wall. The guy in charge said he did not have supplies with him and that the Day 2 movers would handle it. On Day 2 I saw my pictures stacked on the floor of the truck next to each other with no blankets or protection. As a result many picture frames had dents and scratches. Several pieces of furniture were damaged for example: 2 inch tear in a $600 leather chair and a corner broken off of a marble top table. I gave the movers a damage report. Sadly they said they would pay me 30 cents per pound per article which resulted in $201 total. (This would be less than $4 for the leather chair rip.) That was their standard contract term that I had signed. I didn't know any better. On hindsight I should have paid extra for higher coverage, but since they haven't paid my claim it probably doesn't matter. It's been more than 5 months since I gave them my damage claim and I still have not received their check for $201. I called and emailed them many times. Poor planning by the move manager. He walked through my home and said one day was enough to move me out of my old elevator building and into the new place. That was bad planning. It took 7 hours to fill the truck. The move needed two days. People at my new residence were unhappy that the movers were bringing things in after 10 pm at night. Two of the moving guys were very good (Sergio and Fernando). The other two were not and caused problems, for example: they put a box marked "fragile computer monitor" on the floor with heavy boxes on top of it. I paid $3,289 for these two days April 26 and 27, 2016. read more

The first time I used Joeys movers was a great experience. I then recommended them to my brother and they treated him poorly. After they apologized, I decided to give them another shot and that was a mistake. Before signing the move order, I specifically had them change the agreement for a guaranteed move time as my building only lets us rent the elevators in three hour blocks (which we pay for). Joe's showed up nearly two hours late and with only two movers (the move order said they were sending three). This means I had to watch the moving truck at the loading dock, so my belongings wouldn't be unattended. By showing up late and with only two men they were commuting across Chicago during traffic hour which I wanted to avoid all along (hence the early move time I scheduled). I ended up getting charged additional moving fees by my building and the move took longer than expected (which costs more money), due to rush hour. Joeys Movers wouldn't rectify the situation until I posted a negative review on Yelp. Joseph then called and asked me to take the review down if he rectified the situation. Glad to see Joeys still has happy customers! This is an incredibly late review. But my family and I have used Joeys at least 4 times. First in 1989, then 1992, twice in 2004. We have lots of books, large furniture, including a piano and these guys were phenomenal. Friendly, prompt service. No hidden fees. I hate moving, but if I plan to move again, I am relieved to know that Joeys is still around to make it less of a hassle. read more

I scheduled a 2pm move for this past weekend. After the move was scheduled, I had to call back and ask a few questions because no information was provided upfront. I also was not asked or told that shrink wrapping is additional fees and 'loose' or bagged items can't be put on the truck (they just ended up throwing all of that in wardrobe boxes that we had to pay for). The entire move took about 8 1/2 hours to go from a 3rd floor, 2 bedroom unit to another 3rd floor unit. The movers (3 of them) didn't leave until almost 10:30pm.. that's in addition to myself and 2 other roommates helping unload the truck and carrying stuff up to our new unit for the last 2 hours. At times, we noticed only 1 guy actually moving stuff. Despite the padding and shrink wrapping, the walls in our place have some pretty good dents and marks and the backing to one of my shelves was ripped off. After the move, I called to express my disappointment but was immediately met with hostility and attitude. I was generously offered a whopping $35 reimbursement for shrink wrapping. Wish they'd provide customers with a contract, quote, billable items/options, or basically anything to provide more information UPFRONT. read more

Do not hire Joey's Movers! Instead, go to Broadway near Addison and hire some of the guys hanging out on the sidewalk across the street from the U-Haul rental place. I'm sure they would do a better job. Think of everything that could possibly go wrong when hiring movers and it happened to us with this scam that is Joey's Movers. Late? Yes, about 4 hours. Seriously. Also, what was estimated to be a 4 hour job took about 7 hours. Bad attitude? Yes, and the lead guy kept hitting on me, making me feel very uncomfortable. The entire time they complained about this being their third job of the day. That sucks- this company works their employees to the bone and it shows. you shouldn't have to feel apologetic for paying someone to do their job though. Slow? Yep. In fact, we drove past the truck stopping at Wendy's on the way to our new place. You pay by the hour, including driving time. We didn't get to the new place untill 10pm (we hired them to start at 9am) They moved as slow as turtles the entire time. They complained about us being on the second floor (something they knew ahead of time.) I was tempted to strap a dresser on my back and just do it myself, but wasn't about to break any bones over this. Broken things? Yeah, a couple of pieces of furniture were scratched and they paid no attention to the Fragile warnings on our boxes, tossing things, etc. Bad customer service. Of course. After writing a long letter to Joey himself, all that I got in return for this hellish nightmare was a furniture repairman coming over to put a patch on the hole in my love-seat! They also took off a half hour for the time I paid them to eat a cheeseburger and frosty. read more

The movers were very nice, but after finding out they scratched my new hardwood floors by rolling the refrigerator across them, I called to complain. I also noticed several scratches on the refrigerator. The customer service person requested pics of the damage. When I sent them in, I was told they would investigate the damage and contact me. Months went by and nothing. I called and sent numerous emails to company, but they told me it will take some more time. Now they won't even respond to my emails. So unprofessional. We used them 20 years ago to move and they were fantastic! Then we just used them a few weeks ago to move out of that house - they were great again... til they weren't. One of the movers turned on the ceiling fan in the master bedroom pulling the chain so hard that it broke off - no way to turn the fan off! The supervisor of the crew tried to fix it - the person who broke it denied it - then stormed out of the house cursing "motherfu..er". Since the new buyers were expecting a fan - it needed to be replaced. In the stress of moving - my husband went to Home Depot, bought a fan and installed it himself - we were told he would be reimbursed for the fan (which we were) and for his time - which we were not -when I called and spoke to Joey about it - he became VERY DEFENSIVE -said he never said he would pay for the time- I said maybe it was a misunderstanding- he started yelling at me telling me not to him NOT TO CALL HIM A LIAR -I never said that- it is unfortunate that as the owner of the business, he does not have better control of his attitude and emotions - we will be moving again in the next year or so and will not use them again and will no longer recommend them as we have all these years - its too bad because the crew was great (except for the one swearing person). read more

I hired two movers on June 11 to move into my apartment building. During the process they bumped into the wall multiple times causing damage the building management noticed right away. I was required to pay $150 in repairs to the walls. I was standing next to the movers when they hit the wall causing the most damage. They looked at me and said, "oops, did we just do that?" They said I could turn in a damage report to their company, which I did. About a month after turning in my report to JOEYS MOVING I received a letter stating they received my information on the damage and they were reviewing it. To this day, which happens to be August 24, I am still waiting to be reimbursed by JOEY's group. The movers were very efficient, but sloppy. At least they could pay for the damage they caused. If you think about using them, think again. read more

Worst movers ever! Tooks 2.5 hours to clear out a small two bedroom apartment. Took 45 minutes to wrap a couch. Ripped my couch, broke my dresser leg off, broke off the hardware on a desk. Dented my new hardwood floors. Took 5 hours to move two mattresses, two dresser sets, a desk, couch, loveseat. They sent three guys and charged me $35/hour per man, but only two did all the work. The other walked around with a clipboard and hid in the truck. They moved so slow my husband and I started loading stuff into our own car to make it go faster. I called the office the next day and a supervisor was supposed to call me back but never did. My friend, who recommended them called to complain. They don't care. They did nothing about it. All in all $700 for five hours when it should have took two. Never, ever, again. I've moved plenty of times and never paid more than $300. Rip off. read more

The movers were OK for the most part, but they they damaged the plastic molding on the TV. I was told by the head guy on the move, "no big deal -- just call us within three months of the move and we'll either reimburse you or send you a new part". I called Joey's numerous times and was consistently given the runaround: send us a form, email a form, oh, we didn't get it, etc. etc. Until it got to be a few days before the three month window expired. Finally I was told we would get a check for around $40 in the mail since we elected not to get the extra insurance coverage. Fair enough. The check never came, though. read more

I used Joey's for a second time a week ago to move out of a 2nd floor walkup and into a small house. As before, they were great, courteous, careful, and easy to deal with. They worked constantly, didn't really take time for a break. They wrapped all my furniture, and nothing was even dented. We did pay extra for the cling wrap, but what's 30 bucks if it'll ensure you don't destroy your stuff? The move took longer than budgeted, but I have no doubt anyone else could've done it faster. Also, the budgeting is done on the phone, so there's no way of actually knowing. Also, they got a huge dresser up spiral stairs without a scratch. ***Update: While the move went well, we realized one item got damaged in the move. Though I shouldn't be surprised, they were nowhere to be found. We called multiple times and never heard back. As a result we used The Professionals for our most recent move, not Joey's. read more

Unfortunately, Plasma TV stolen by crew. Unfortunately, Joey's takes no responsibility or accountability for their crews. "File your claim" "File your claim", "File your claim" was all they said. I was actually told by Joseph, (Joey's son), that the TV was there when movers got there but they didn't take it. In other words they took everything else in apartment, TV was NOT in apartment upon final inspection, but they did NOT take the TV. Even worse, I paid those scumbags $250 to store my stuff for a month. The only thing they did NOT take is responsibility and accountability for their actions. Total disappointment. Wow. All of you who gave Joey's movers a great review, glad to hear you got some of Joey's professional movers to move you. From the 4 they sent us, 2 seem like were pick off the streets. The truck was nothing like the pictures on their website, seem like it belong to one of their movers who privately owns it, and works for them on the side (it was not a nice looking truck). We had some damages and missing items, including a jar full of coins. I wrote them a long letter of the experience we recieve from Joey's movers. I even sent them pictures of the damages and missing items. I've recieve a repond from them over a couple of weeks later. We move in June 2008, this is December 2008. Nothing has been resolved yet. I get a call from someone who repairs the damage done by their movers. The way he explain it is, we fix the damages our way. How about replacing the item? Not filling in the holes with wood filling or whatever!!!! What about the items MISSING? For the price that was pay to Joey's Movers, everything should have been replace! There's alot more bad experience to mention, but this should be enough! read more

Never used a moving company before but Joey's was great! We went from the second floor to a fourth floor walk up and the three guys did it under 2.5 hours. AMAZING! They arrived early, brought wardrobe boxes to load in my clothes, brought items where I wanted them and worked well together. Had to move some some items won in an auction. I was going to do it by renting a Uhaul but decided to have someone do it. I used Joeys years ago when they were in Evanston so I gave them a call for a quote. These were bulky and heavy items so hiring someone was the way to go. Smart decision instead of going it the DIY route and making multiple trips. Joeys was reasonably priced, showed up early, crew was pleasant and worked fast. They were done 40 minutes ahead of schedule. No complaints and would recommend them. read more

Joeys were contracted to move our 4bed rental 0.5 miles to the home we bought in May. Joseph comes and surveys, estimates what is needed for truck size, number of men and time and during our walk through I asked if the movers can put some closed boxes on the truck (things we still hadn't unpacked) and he said "you're paying for the whole truck, men and time so if there's space and time... fill it up". So a big truck, 3 guys and 4hrs is what was estimated by this experienced and professional business owner... The 3 guys worked very hard and continuously. They earned their money. However, there were a few little things that annoyed us... the leader of the group kept suggesting throughout the day how much tip they normally get because they do such a good job. No harm in trying but there's a limit to how many times before it becomes tiresome. They boxed a few small plastic draws sets and proceeded to carry or load them upside down! There were loose files thrown into a couple of boxes then carried upside down!! Joseph stops by mid afternoon (about 5hours in to the quoted 4!) as they were only about 1/4 unloaded and I asked what is his plan given the estimate was so wrong, he said that we can discuss it when they're finished... 9hrs in total and I get presented with a bill double the estimate! When I asked to speak to Joseph he was unavailable... when I refused to pay the bill (and the workers won't leave my dining room until the bill is paid!) Joseph miraculously becomes available and calls me... refuses to take any responsibility for seriously underestimating the job, tries to blame the 20 boxes I had the guys load (which took 20min more)... tries to suggest I changed the list of items moved, a list he compiled during our walk around when he told me "if there's space, fill it up"... After 20 more minutes we reached an agreement, which was not double the estimate! Now we've completely unpacked we can't find some electrical items that are missing (Roku and some cables) so I email Joseph to ask if they may have been left in the truck or handed in to the office by the guys... no reply! We used Joey's Movers a couple weeks ago -- during one of the worst Chicago heat waves in years -- and they were fantastic. We'd use them again, absolutely. Not only was the heat/humidity difficult, but the move itself was complicated: from our old apartment, then to our storage unit, then to our new place (with lots of stairs). The movers were friendly and professional, and were really careful with all our stuff. I know the weather and the stairs were difficult, but they did a great job and made the stress of moving day a lot more bearable. read more

Joey's movers came highly recommended from a person I trust who has seen many moves. I can only assume that my bad experience was an exception. However, the folks in customer service have been quite unhelpful. The short story is that the movers failed to cover any of my furniture with neither the blankets they had on their truck nor the plastic wrap that I purchased at home depot and asked them to use. As a result, my couch is now threadbare and dented at all corners, my dining room table has a gouge in it, my wood veneer side table and bookshelves are chipped, and my white powder coated steel file cabinets are dented and scratched. If you use Joey's I recommend wrapping up all of your furniture before the movers come. My crew did not offer to do a walk-through with me, and in my frustration about the damaged furniture, I forgot to check the storage space in my new place to make sure everything was put away. After they left I found half of my items sitting out in the hall, blocking my neighbors storage units. When I called Joey's, about 20 minutes later they said my crew was already on their second job and could not send someone out to finish the job until the next day. My partner and I had to do it ourselves. We moved on July 20, it has now been a month, and I am still waiting for Joey's to resolve the situation. Full disclosure...my move with Joey's was a year ago...and you'd think that when you're done with a move, your interaction with a moving company ends. BUT--Joey's (and Joseph Brooks in particular) has been so much more than a moving company! I needed (okay, wanted) someone to clean my condo...Joseph passed along a great recommendation. When a light fixture in my bathroom broke 6 months ago (original to the condo, not touched by the movers), Joseph coordinated a handyman to come out and fix it for me. And just yesterday, more than a year after my move with Joey's, I received a card from Joey's for my birthday with a gift card to Gibson's--I mean....they did a fantastic job on my move, they have helped me keep my place clean, made my life simple by finding me a handyman...AND then they send me a gift card for my birthday??? I've worked with many companies over the years--I've known none of them to treat their customers with the respect and complete focus on customer satisfaction like Joey's. I've moved a lot in my life--over 20 times--and my move with Joey's was #1! read more

Wow, the response from Joseph at Joey's Movers is even more mind-boggling than their terrible service and communication. The statement that they "offered the option of finding a legitimate repair person your self, and covering your costs", and that we "chose not to", is a complete lie. We have all the emails from Joey's and the letter from the insurance adjuster as proof, and there is never any such offer. In fact, we asked if we could use a furniture repair company in Evanston that we knew was excellent, and they said we had to go to their place--the same place that kept the chair for over a month and then said they couldn't repair it. If Joey's had only really communicated with us or responded to our emails and calls, this all could have been resolved. So Joseph, does your offer to let us find a repair person and cover our costs still stand? We haven't received the $7.50 check that the adjuster said you would send for the damage to the chair . We'd still like to get our family heirloom chair repaired! read more
