Last night my kids came in from North Carolina and all they could talk about always when coming to Connecticut is Capotorto's Pizza. Their flight was delayed and when we went to call Capotorto's. Capotorto's Apizza Center is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in East Haven, Connecticut in 2003. It was founded by Ralph Capotorto. The Capotorto Family plays a large role in Greater New Haven's rich pizza history. Family patriarch Antonio "Tony" Capotorto immigrated to Connecticut from Italy in the early 1960s when he was just 20 years old. After serving in the military, he decided to open his own pizzeria. Tony opened The Apizza Center in Fairfield in 1968 and he would continue to operate it for 3 decades. Tony's sons (including Ralph) worked there over the years and became talented pizzaioli in their own right. Ralph trained and worked as an HVAC technician for a number of years before he finally decided to return to his culinary roots. Following the closure of the original Apizza Center, Ralph decided to open his own and continue the Capotorto family legacy. Ralph's best friend Scott Hartley (who also worked and trained at the original Apizza Center) opened his own pizzeria, The Nauti Dolphin, in Fairfield in 1983. Younger brother Nick Capotorto relocated to New Mexico around 2000 and opened his own Apizza Center in 2020. My family and I recently sampled some pies from Capotorto's Apizza Center. My wife was the first one to sample their pizza her job ordered some pies from there for a work pizza party. She was really impressed with the pizza and a short time later she surprised the rest of us by grabbing some take-out. The pies that we all enjoyed were a "Plain Tomato Pie", the "East Haven Masher" (mashed potatoes made with heavy cream, scallions and bacon), and the "Route 80 Commuter" (classic white pie buttered with ricotta cheese & topped with grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes, fresh garlic & just the right spice). Well when delivered it was a cheese pizza and when I called back she said this is what we ordered which is not true. she had me repeat the order to her twice!! when I called back she was not pleasant this is the one time I wish the calls were recorded!! not to mention she didn't mention the delivery fee. My take on Capotorto's is that it is a hidden gem of an apizza spot. While in New Haven I wanted to try some apizza but Modern had an insane line, I'd already been to Franks (which probably also had a crazy line) and Sally's wasn't open yet. So, I started heading back home looking for an apizza place and luckily stumbled across Capotorto's. We ended up being the only people in the restaurant but that perfect. We decided to go with a medium sausage and pepperoni and it was great. Between the two off us we ate the whole thing. I also grabbed a chocolate chip cookie on my way out and it was excellent as well. I have a few gripes but they are relatively minor. They have beer but I'd like to see a better selection. It was pretty boring stuff given what is available in the region and they only had bottles. Something on draft would be nice. Also, apparently, they only get one TV station. I asked if we could change the channel and watch some football and that was a no go. But neither of these would stop me from returning. All in all, it was a great experience and I'd absolutely return. read more

I was excited to try this place based off the Yelp reviews. We called on a Sunday afternoon which is normally busy time at most places and were happy it was only 20 minutes to pick up. We ordered our usual, two small pizzas one extra cheese one chicken cutlet and our go to fried mootz. My bf hated the fried mootz. The sauce it was in either had too much onions/garlic or garlic powder. I would have also preferred a more simple sauce. My pizza loving bf also didn't finish his small cheese which never happens. The boneless chicken wings are definitely not real chicken and my daughter found 2 pieces of black plastic in her Italian wedding soup, my grandson slice of pizza tasted like cardboard. Went to order a pizza for pickup and was told that I had to pay over the phone or they wouldn't take my order. I asked why this was as I live on the other side of town and have never been to this place before. The snarky little twit replied that "someone from this number ordered something and never picked it up". Firstly, I just GOT this number, secondly, blacklist a NAME, a PERSON, not a number that changes users more frequently than an STI changes hosts. Lastly, if you're in the business of serving people, be a people person! I would highly recommend avoiding this place. The food is terrible. It will make you sick. I got some food from there. They're bacon is like bacon, bits, burnt, and smoky. It's like the place. Can't afford to put a regular piece of bacon on your food. They have to use some kind of grated bacon, which will give you, an offset stomach that's for sure so if you eat at this place, beware that you will most likely get sick so I would highly recommend avoiding this place and this is coming from an Italian guy in East Haven, Connecticut! Also, if you get the pizza there, the dough is sometimes not even cooked all the way it's like raw dough and don't ever order a calzone from there. They are awful. I'm telling you right now. I would go to John & MariaGia Marie's skip this place. And when you order a sandwich from there and you asked for onion, they don't specify that they're going to grill and sauté it so when you get a sandwich that you're expecting raw onion, which by default it should come as raw onion and if they're not sure they should ask the person before they take it upon themselves to give you whatever they want to give you. read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place! It's often overlooked due to its odd little corner location hidden among other little shops, but don't underestimate this place! The service is friendly and fast when you sit in, but we often opt for takeout or delivery. The decor inside is pretty bare bones typical pizza place, but I don't mind it. It has all the essentials. The pizza is awesome. Our favorite by far is the over the top pizza (Honey BBQ chicken, bacon, and ranch). The East Haven Masher is another favorite, but you really can't go wrong with any of the pizzas! Check them out on Uber eats, order online, they can't make it any easier for you to get their pizza into your mouth. read more

When I called back, I was told the order was "lost" and the delivery guy "just left" ..... yup... still waiting. I feel bad for the staff. Where's the management? I have been patronizing Capotorto's for years. Tonight, I got the absolute worst pizza I have ever eaten. I placed an order for delivery and was told it would be approximately 1 hour. To my surprise, the driver arrived in less than 30 minutes. I opened a box of ice cold pizza not made the way I ordered it. To boot, the sauce was super sweet. Not their usual recipe. I have no qualms about recommending Capotorto's. I order home delivery about twice a month and eat at their restaurant every so often. The delivery guys are very friendly and affable, and the girls working at the restaurant are sweet and attentive. Living around the corner from this place has multiple benefits, but I would not include weight loss in that category. What can I say? The pizza and subs are extremely tasty and mouthwatering, and the chicken caesar salad is amazing. I particularly love the Reese's pie for dessert but anything on the menu is luscious. If you want cannoli, it's yours and it's FRESH. There's also never a shortage of Foxon Park soda, which is great as I particularly adore the White Birch Beer. Any given meal is seriously economical as well. If you don't feel like shlepping to Modern or Pepe's, it's a rational decision to cross Capotorto's modest threshold and relish an authentic dining experience with standard Italian dishes that rival any of the New Haven giants. read more

Yes, it's far north East Haven, but the geography still commands darn good pizza if you're this close to the secret pizza Mecca of AMERICA. They're up to the task here. Price first. Four slices, two with toppings, two sodas with unlimited Foxon Park refills, and a big chocolate chip cookie. $14.90 after tax. The price is right here for a two person lunch. Service: I love the folks working here. Today she got our pizza quickly, offered to warm up the cookie in the pizza oven (GREAT decision, by the way), checked up on us regularly. Environs: 2 HDTV's, rudimentary seating, all the necessary pizza condiments, from garlic powder to red pepper flakes. Food: Excellent New Haven-esque pizza. A little char without overdoing it, thin but not unmanageable... tasty. It still boggles the mind how Domino's survives. Price difference is extremely minor, product difference is intergalactic. Truly a great find in the greater New Haven area. I travel a lot and eat at hundreds of places a year. This small yet comfortable restaurant is really a great place to eat. I stopped by here for lunch, basically on accident, about two months ago. I have since gone back a handful of times and have been satisfied every time. My work is literally a 3-5 min ride from Wooster Street in New Haven, And when it comes to a lunch slice....I go to CAPOTORTOS!!!. Although there are some of the greatest pizza spots in NH, that's no secret, this one is absolutely worth a shot. Doesn't hurt that the operators are really nice people.
