After driving by this place for years, we stopped in late one night for a beef sammich. Back in the day, there used to be a mom and pop hot dog stand on every corner in the burbs but they have closed over the years and it can be difficult to find a quick dog and fries, AND support local. Sorry Portillo's but you are not what you used to be. Johnnie's is open late which is fantastic for late night munchies or for the second shifters that are getting off work late in the evening. Our beef sandwich was a large portion (9") filled with beef and sweet peppers. YUM. The fries were still in the bag and I was shocked to see a BAG OF FRIES in there. When I addressed the price the non English speaking employees got another employee that could speak English. Then manger was rude and angry that i pointed out that they are charging different prices. This location is on a busy Arlington Heights Road, with a dedicated parking lot. They have two entrances on opposite sides of the restaurant and have a register at both ends, each with a queue. One places your order and pay (they accept credit cards) and theoretically sit down to wait, but in reality the order will probably be ready before you have a chance to. There aren't many tables, but the turnaround is very quick if you want to eat in. We ordered 4 Beef sandwiches (two with hot peppers) and 2 large lemon italian ices. The total was about $45, pretty reasonable for 4. We didn't say add any specials to the beefs so they came 'wet', with the juices from the drenched beef spilling onto the bread...it would have been fine if we had asked for it 'dipped'. They were generous with the very hot giardiniera. The bread was good...obviously fresh and does a nice job of holding its structure when wet (though I think all bets are off if the sandwich is dunked i.e. baptized). The beef was more shredded than sliced, but wasn't too fatty and thin enough to cling onto the juices for flavor. All in all, a very good sandwich for $7. The fries were shoe string (same as McD): hot and crispy. The star of the show was the Italian Ice...it is stored in large drums and hand scooped into each large drink cup until it overflows....this is what the took the most time to be given to us because the time it takes to scoop. Even on a rather chilly day, it really hit the spot...helping to cut through the fatty sandwiches and the hotness of the peppers. You really can't duplicate it. They also had green lime flavor available, but I always get lemon (they even have lemon peels in the ice to show it is made with freshly squeezed lemons)...watermelon is offered in the summer and that's a must get. read more

Perfect place to get an old school Italian beef if you are out in the suburbs. It is amazing how fast they get your order ready. They had it ready to go before I could grab napkins ( make sure you get plenty) and find a table. What can you say about Johnnie's that hasn't been said? Tender beef, sliced so thin you can see through it, piled high on a fresh hunk of bread and topped with hot peppers. Perfection. Add a grilled sausage with sweet peppers for a nice combo meal. And don't miss the Italian ices! I had to go with both the watermelon and the original lemon. Superb. No special orders allowed in this cafeteria line, The senior cashier that English is a second language ignores special requests and claims fries are cooked for 3 minutes when they serve them cold. Don't ask for a frozen lemonade without a cap because when you ask for a CUP with a cap, they give another paper cup with no cap.. Nevermore.. This place provides food extremely fast. We got two beef sandwiches drenched with giardiniera and two sides of fries which they dump a half an order onto your fries. They're like McDonald's fries but taste less like chemicals and more like potato's. The beef was good, giardiniera wasn't too exciting and I could've used more on my sandwich but overall it was a great experience and I wish we had just one of these beef places back home. They only have a couple things on there menu but the food is fantastic and fast. You can't beat that. It's a small layout really reminds me of a little dinner 8 tables. I returned here today for my Mothers birthday lunch. Simple order, 2 beefs, juicy, 1 HotDog and fry, ket /pickle. Asked for a couple ketchup packets. Beefs were very good, hot dog had a stale bun and fries were raw ( asked for well done fries) Ketchup came in a piece of wax paper !!! WTF It appears that no one working here gives a shit about anything, it's just how fast can they take your money and almost throw the food at you. If you don't cook the fries well done, open your mouth and say something . Maybe if they hired people who spoke English and gave a shit about the customer, these things would not happen. Hands down, the best Italian beef in NW suburbs. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon when I tried this small beef restaurant for the first time. The place was packed and all the tables were occupied. Ordered regular beef sandwich with hot gardinere and juicy with an order of fries. I was very pleasantly surprised that my order was ready as soon as finished paying. And mind you, the place was packed. The beef was absolutely delicious, with great flavor and very tender meat. The hot peppers packed a punch but tasty. As I said, the service was outstanding and ate my sandwich standing up by a counter on the side. Decided to try their homemade Italian ice with real lemon wedges to cool my palate. I've never been here before last night. My cousin and I pulled in on a whim. The parking lot was big and empty, and we had heard they serve good Italian beef and Italian sausage. Inside, Johnnie's is spacious and clean. The customer service counter is very long and there are plenty of tables throughout. I can imagine the joint gets busy for lunch or dinner and probably on the weekend. There were plenty of staff on hand and all seem to be busy and enjoying their work even at 9 at night in the middle of the week. The two folks who helped us were so friendly and polite and professional. We ordered what Johnnie's is known for: my cousin had an Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers with a side of french fries, and I had a double Italian sausage sandwich with jardinera. The prices on the menu board are so ridiculously cheap, I felt like they hadn't changed the menu since the 1980's! This is a must to try for price alone! BONUS: you might think that for prices that cheap the food would be terrible, but in fact the food was quite good, especially for what you pay! Our sandwiches were cooked to order and came up so quickly. BONUS: Turano bakery supplies the Italian bread for the sandwiches! Even at 9 p.m., our buns were perfectly tasty, slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and delicious! The Italian beef sandwich had a modest amount of beef and Italian peppers. My cousin said it was quite good, hot and tasty, and importantly, had good quality meat. Like a few other places we discussed during our meal, Johnnie's Italian beef is not overly garlicky or overly salty. The Italian sausage was, likewise, small, so I'm glad I ordered a double. The jardinera portion was also modest. With that in mind, you must remember the very low prices. Most importantly, the Italian sausage was delicious. Nothing fancy, just darn tasty and cooked perfectly! The jardinera on top was, similarly, nothing fancy, but definitely spicy and with the right amount of oil and vegetables. The french fries were of the very small, thin-cut style. They were nothing special, but they were cooked just fine and with the right amount of salt. It's important to note that Johnnie's has numerous signs about its Italian Ice, which it offers in watermelon and lemon flavors. I asked, and was told the Italian ice is made in-house. I figured I'd give it a whirl. The gentleman at the counter recommended the lemon. BONUS: I ordered a small and was given a small drink cup stuffed with Italian Ice and double the amount over the top of the rim! Johnnie's Italian ice is smooth and soft, mild but not weak flavored, and not too sugary. What I really liked about it were the two lemon rinds inside my serving!
