We recently moved to the area and wanted to check out Johnny's. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive. After talking with some locals, I got the impression that Johnny's best days might be behind it. It happened to be my birthday, so we made a reservation for 7:15 on a Friday night. Food: As you would expect from a steakhouse and supper club, the menu is extensive, with plenty of appetizers, steaks, seafood, and even pizza. We started with cocktails. I ordered the Sangria special, while others had the Mint Margarita and the Peachy Keen Smash. All of them were very good, with delicious flavor profiles and enough alcohol to let you know you were having a real cocktail. For an appetizer, we ordered the Crispy Brussels Sprouts, finished with hot honey and pomegranate seeds. They were delicious. Crispy just the way we like them, served hot, and generously portioned. There were plenty of great entrée choices, and we settled on the Lamb Chops for me, because if lamb is on the menu, I'm probably ordering it, the "Best in Wisconsin" Pork Chops, and the Scallop Cacciatore. Each entrée came with a nice house salad and warm bread. The lamb was excellent, heavily seasoned with rosemary, nicely charred, and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The roasted potatoes and carrots were also very good. The pork chops really were some of the best we've ever had at a restaurant. Both the broiled and breaded versions were excellent, and it was hard to pick a favorite. The Scallop Cacciatore was also good. They used quality scallops and seared them nicely without overcooking them. The pasta sauce, however, had more red pepper flakes than my wife preferred. She loves scallops but isn't a fan of spicy food, so this probably wasn't the best choice for her. We wanted dessert, so we made sure to leave room and took plenty of leftovers home. The Brandy Alexander was made perfectly. They use scooped ice cream rather than soft serve, which gave the drink a thicker texture with a few small chunks of ice cream. The tiramisu was also excellent. It was served at room temperature, had a distinct coffee flavor, and wasn't overly sweet. A very nice finish to an excellent meal. Service: We received excellent service throughout the entire evening. From the moment we arrived and for the next couple of hours, we were consistently well attended to. Everything was well timed, from the water and cocktails to the entrées and dessert. The service was efficient without ever making us feel rushed. Since they asked whether we were celebrating a special occasion, they surprised me with a complimentary strawberry cake for my birthday. Our server was friendly, efficient, and helpful throughout the evening. Thanks, Patty! The manager also stopped by a couple of times to check on us, which was a nice touch. Atmosphere: It's a beautiful setting. The woodwork, windows, lighting, and overall design are all very well done. The restaurant feels polished and well cared for without making you feel like you need to dress especially fancy to enjoy it. There was one thing that detracted from the otherwise beautiful atmosphere for me. A couple of televisions over the bar are visible from parts of the dining room. That's not something I expect during a fine-dining experience, and I found them distracting. On our next visit, I'll ask for a table where the TVs are either out of view or less noticeable. Overall, this was an excellent experience. Aside from the television issue, it was a lovely evening with outstanding food and service. Johnny's definitely exceeded my expectations, and it's a place we'd be happy to return to. read more

Very surprised on the what the ambiance was inside the restaurant, as when you see the outside the inside is not what you expect. Surprised in a good way!! Service was excellent. Water was always filled, drinks came quick, appetizers were perfectly timed. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and it was huge! The fried deviled eggs were "ok", nothing to run back to get as they needed more flavor..... Our table of four ordered the pork chops which are "Wisconsins best" and they truly are, a filet done with Oscar style and two pasta specials. Out of the meal choices the pork chops won hands down. Stunning! I'm rarely wowed by a restaurant, but my visit to Johnny Manhattan's was wonderful in every way. As my wife and I walked in, we were amazed by the scale and beauty of the place. The hardwood bar needs to be experienced firsthand to understand how spectacular it is. Then you see the impressive fireplace and the charming dining area, and I was loving it before we even did anything there. We arrived early, so we went to the bar for drinks. My wife, the couple we were with, and I were each impressed with the size of the pours. We ordered a few glasses of wine, a fantastic classic Wisconsin Old Fashioned, and a bourbon on the rocks. The amount we were poured each was impressive, especially compared to other restaurants we've been to lately. The service was fantastic. We were constantly catered to, even though the place was packed. We were each shocked to learn our waitress was new and just starting to fly solo, because she was terrific. Finally, and most importantly, the food was excellent. We started with crab cakes and escargot. Both were absolutely stellar. The salad and bread service were delicious, too, and it was a nice touch that the butter came in slices (we didn't have to unwrap them from foil - a small thing but another plus). When our steaks arrived, each was cooked to the perfectly charred medium-rare we ordered (three NY Strips and one Filet Mignon). Paired with mushrooms, sauteed onions, and some of the largest baked potatoes we'd ever seen, we were in culinary paradise. We will definitely be back, and I imagine many times to come. I had been wanting to visit Johnny Manhattan's for years. Having grown up in the area, I couldn't believe I'd never been -- so we decided to go for my son's birthday. Unfortunately, it was a major disappointment, and I won't be returning. The atmosphere was fantastic -- it truly has that classic, old-school supper club feel I was hoping for. Sadly, the poor service overshadowed nearly everything else. We never received bread for the table, our drinks sat empty for long stretches, a martini glass was accidentally dropped and shattered on our table, and two of our five meals arrived missing their sides. The food itself was good, but not great. My son's pizza was undercooked -- the crust couldn't even hold up the cheese and pepperoni. The ribs were lackluster, the fries never showed up, and while my steak was decent, it too was missing a side. The remaining dishes at our table came out correctly and were fine, but by that point we'd been waiting well over an hour and didn't have the patience to request fixes. Overall, the food quality was okay for the area, but not worth the price or frustration. I'd suggest driving a little farther for a better dining experience. read more

Very welcoming entry door, parking lot, ramp with railings, restroom, and smooth navigation inside of the restaurant for cane or walker dependent customers. A generous menu of assorted food choices and appetizers. Friendly hostess and waitstaff. Great bartenders. Special occasion dinner or just an evening out with a friend are handled well here. We went here on a Wednesday night for our anniversary and it was a great meal. The steaks were cooked perfectly and they were flavorful. The sides were fabulous. The inside is filled with holiday decorations and it's very joyful. Feels like an old high end supper club. They also gave us a small anniversary cake at the end. It was very kind. A wonderful establishment with a steak house vibe, a great place for special occasions. The Johnny Manhattan is an awesome cocktail with your choice of spirits, you can't go wrong with this. Our entree was a 24-ounce choice ribeye special with onion rings which sounded awesome and looked fantastic. This is a classic do not judge a book by the cover. Exterior looks like any small town bar on the corner, however the interior is decorated in rich wood and feels rich rustic. Our waiter was ok but not great. We shared a large filet mignon and for an extra plate we received a bread plate which was pretty thoughtless, very disappointed that the baked potato is served plain with no fixing, when asked we received 3 pads of butter and a a large scoop of sour cream. The food was very over priced. As an avid steak lover we got the ribeye (which was $10 more than last time we came) The steak was very small and had no juice on the bottom. It was very dry and over cooked. The fried chicken was cold when it arrived to our table. The service was good. We are disappointed that we didn't get a dessert when celebrating our birthday but not sure if they do that anymore. The ambiance was nice. It wasn't too loud and you could still have conversations. Tonight we had the filets, and they were cooked absolutely perfectly, tender, flavorful, and exactly how you hope a great steak will be. We started with the cheese curds, which were also amazing and a must-order. The service was fantastic from start to finish, attentive without being overbearing. We had an incredible dining experience here. Table of 5 sober got to try alot of dishes. The brandy old fashioned were perfect. The server was attentive and friendly and we actually got our own private room. We highly recommend the haystack onion strings and the cheese curd appetizers. The remoulade (?) sauce with the strings was fantastic. One of our diners had the lasagna. It was absolutely enormous and came with a salad and what he described as the best garlic bread ever. He also said the lasagna was the best he's ever had. He's a big eater and barely ate half his meal. The steaks were cooked perfectly and had an amazing char. The baked potato and the hash brown casserole were both great. We added side scallops and they were huge and tasty. Great meal. Great food and service. I enjoyed the fish fry, while my family enjoyed the chicken dinner deal. I am subtracting a star because they had high chairs, but absolutely no place to change a diaper. Please consider putting a changing table in ADA bathroom or finding another spot for one. The manager was kind enough to push to chairs together in a side office for a diaper change, but that is not the safest option and no guarantee they will let me do that again. I will either have to plan to change her diaper in the car or wait until we are out of diapers to return as a family. read more

We had to sit in the back room unfortunately. Nice but lacked any ambiance. Our meals just disappointed us. Prime filet for me was delivered bloody red - not how I like it. Ordered medium well - which I almost fear ordering at "nice" places for fear the cook's call that I sin - but that's how I like it - with a little pink. Plus it had some rubbery parts. Coudn't chew it through. Salad and bread were average and forgettable. My wife ordered the special, a prime tenderloin stuffed with cheese and over linguine and marinara. We weren't exactly sure how the meat was cooked but she thought it was cooked in old oil or a burnt pan. Maybe it's just us but we thought our expectations were fair. After hearing so many raves from others, we celebrated our 35th anniversary and made a reservation on a Tuesday as Saturday was full for 2 weeks. Rich dark wood ceilings and throughout. Nice inviting bar with an authentic espresso machine! The menu included a special menu left me wanting 4 different entrees so I ordered scallops which didn't seem fresh and quite pricey at $18 for TWO! The filet was butter tender and on point, pork chops were sizable to share with 3 others! And the flavors and tenderness was the best I've ever had or imagined. Au gratin potatoes hot in a ramekin, ooey gooey richness, also enough to share with others! The ribs, however disappointing as the flavor wasn't to my liking but wanted to try it. Until last night, every meal we have had at Johnny Manhattans has been fantastic, calling it one of our favorite places. Unfortunately both my husband (an avid steak lover who has never ordered anything but!) and I both ordered the lasagna which was a mistake. It was flat yet heavy, only had a few layers, was doused with a heavy sauce, and didn't have much flavor... so disappointing! i've been coming here for years. Food has been wonderful last night. I was so disappointed. We had a new waiter horrible never brought us our sauce. The steaks were cold we ordered our steaks medium. They were dried out,. Way over done for being medium as for the pork chops also cold and overcooked they weren't as moist as I'm used to. I'm not sure if they have a new cook or what but also the bread was so dried out. I'm used to that nice soft bread that they served French not dried out sourdough that came from the day old store I also the waiter couldn't even fill our cups of coffee. He would a quarter full over empty I understand or at least told the daughter now is running the restaurant I hope this is not the future of Johnny Manhattans. It would be very sad. I will try one more time, but if it's the same, I won't be returning and believe me word of the mouth goes a long way when I have a relative that writes reviews on restaurants read more

We visited this restaurant for our wedding anniversary! Pulling in I expected a smaller restaurant. When we got inside we were so pleased to see the beautiful big windows and overall decor. We started with the specialty drink of the day and it was the strawberry lemon drop (5/5) so good! My husband got the escargot and he felt that it was the best he ever had. Next, we both enjoyed the baked french onion soup, salad, ribeye, and prime rib! I also got the au gratin potatoes. We can't wait to come back to this restaurant. I enjoyed my ribeye, my husband is a self-proclaimed prime rib connoisseur and he would rate it a 3/5, he enjoyed it reheated the next day after the au ju soaked in more . What a great time we had tonight. Very relaxed and casual atmosphere. Our server Kelly was very pleasant, professional and very accommodating. We had a party of six and we had some drinks and appetizers. The cheese curds were excellent, onion was delicious and the side salads were generous in size with fresh in house dressing. Dinner was excellent, we had spaghetti with meatballs, lasagna, baked ribs and pork chops. Each meal was cooked perfectly and portion size was enough to take plenty home. OHMYGOODNESS! One of the most delicious dinners we have enjoyed in a lovely setting with a fabulous server, Noah. First of all, Noah is one of the most personable servers. Just the right amount of friendly engagement, helpful information and stellar service. The calamari and eggplant appetizers or delectable. The main course was phenomenal. I had the salmon with mango salsa, risotto & French green beans that were cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the prime rib and we were floored at the slab of deliciousness that arrived on his plate. Total melt in your mouth. And the desserts (we ordered all) were heavenly.
