I can see why people like it here - for the nostalgia. The store is twice as big as your average donut shop - it looks like they took over the storefront next door and combined the spaces. Johnny's definitely has a retro feel to it, from the wooden tables and wall dividers to old-timey logo. When we walked in I was surprised by the lack of selection - granted, we came in around noon on a weekend, so maybe they had had a busy morning - but even still, weekends are prime donut time - I expect shops to be better stocked. They had the staples you expect to see - glazed raised, chocolate raised, some sprinkled donuts, and a few cake donuts - but little else. There also weren't a lot of any one type. I got a chocolate raised donut and my boyfriend got a cinnamon roll thing. He said his was overwhelmingly cinnamon-y, which he liked, but he couldn't really taste my donut when I shared it. My donut, to me, tasted bland and "dusty," like it was covered in flour after it was finished. As a side note - the starbucks bottled frapaccino I bought from the drink cabinet was about three weeks expired (which I didn't notice until after we paid) - and tasted funny. Our family has been coming to Johnny's Donuts for over 40 years. I can recall going with my dad to get donuts on a Sunday morning and then to the park to fly our model rockets. Unfortunately, the quality of the past has declined. On our last two visits the taste of the oil is coming through in the donuts and it does not taste good at all. I am wondering if the oil is not being changed as often as it should to avoid the breakdown that results in a rancid flavor in the donuts. Hope it can be resolved. read more

Not bad and surprisingly impressed. After lunch at Blossom Bee next door, we decided to pick up doughnuts for the kids. Bestie bought this ENORMOUS, cake sized doughnut for her son, and some doughnut holes and apple fritters for us. The apple fritter was just right, finished it in 5. The doughnut holes are glazed yeast doughnuts 6 for $1! SWEET! We were there on a Thursday around 11am, so there were still plenty of doughnuts to choose from. Recommend by a coworker of mine and decided to stop in for a treat. As in most donut shops in the mornings, old timers in groups sitting around is a typical seen. Looking at the selection, I saw 2 gigantic size donuts the size of a very large dinner plate enough for 4 or more people. I decide to be conservative and order a classic old fashion and a cake donut as my standard test for donuts. These were very good as they were not greasy, but just right for my taste. I've been here a handful of times. Each time I leave happy and with all my delicious treats. I would recommend the apple fritter as it is nice and crunchy, glazed, and surprisingly not too sweet. There are little chunks of apple hidden in its divine goodness. The cinnabun tastes a lot like that large donut they sell but it's still good. I paid a little over a dollar for each thing I bought, the large donut, cinnabun, and the apple fritter. If I wasn't so worried about blowing up from eating so much yumminess I would come here every day! read more

This was my first time going to get Donuts at Johnny's. It looks clean inside and there is a lot of seating, for a donut shop. It smells great too! The customer service was decent. I pretty much got 2 of each donut and donut holes. The donuts have an extra crunch or crispness that you don't get everywhere. Overall, I liked it and would go back. The only reason I give 3 stars is because, I'm from Round Rock, TX and if you have had RR Donuts, you know what I'm talking about( BEST DONUTS EVER). So compared to RRD, its not all that, at the same time, I have yet to find a donut place as good or better. read more

Best donut place in Dublin. Everything is super fresh and all the classics are spot on. My faves are the chocolate raised and glazed old-fashioned. The raised donuts are perfectly fluffy and chewy. These donuts are comparable to Dainty's in San Ramon, and much better than nearby Doughboy's. It's located in a super convenient location too. The Mix Creamery also gets its donuts from Johnny's. read more

Really good donuts! The glaze donut is so good. It's very fluffy but kind of dense. The thing that surprised me is how soft the donut was. I live in Hayward and have driven all the way over here just to get donuts. That's how delectable these donuts are. I used to think that Stan's Donuts in Santa Clara were the best, but Johnny's definitely blows them out of the water. They're light and airy and each bite makes you want to devour it just like Cookie Monster devours cookies. I always get their glazed donuts. I decided to check this place out today while waiting on Little Guy to get out of school. I purchase 1 glazed, 1 old fashioned glazed and 1 chocolate cake with sprinkles all for $2.85. The lady behind the counter was super nice and chatted with me for a few. I wolfed my glazed down and have no complaints. Hubby enjoyed his old fashioned as well. LG also inhaled his with no complaints. I tried a bit of his and enjoyed that the actual donut part wasn't super sickly sweet (who needs that when you have icing and sprinkles on top!). I've had the old-oil flavored, dry, crumbly donuts from the other neighborhood shops. They just can't compete! These are hands down the best donuts you can find around this side of heaven. Whether it's the cakes, holes, the killer, old-fashioned, glazed, raised, or bars--you just can't go wrong. The dough is soft, fresh, moist and cooked to melt in your mouth perfection. Oh. My. Word. First of all...I'm pretty sure I saw a 12-inch cake sized donut checking me out from behind the glass, but I was too intimidated to take her home. The medium sized donuts (glazed, sugar, etc.) and twists are fluffy and airy - probably the fluffiest donut I have ever had. Incredibly delicious and hits the spot! The smaller donuts (chocolate with chocolate glaze and sprinkles, etc.) are also incredibly fluffy but almost cake-like, a little bit denser. Both equally amazing and both equally delicious so I highly suggest you take home at least one of each. I would love to go back and try more donuts every weekend morning! We went at around 9:30 on a Saturday morning and only had a few people in front of us in line. There were plenty of places to sit but we took ours home to enjoy as it was raining and windy. Oh - and if you take home the 12-inch donut, let me know if it is as fluffy as I'm imagining! read more

I loved the atmosphere, but to be honest, I've had better donuts. I found my cinnamon twist to be overly sweet. Don't get me wrong, the donut was good and my daughter liked her sprinkle donut, it just wasn't the 'best' donut I've ever had. Another donut shop (family owned) review for me. My Grandsons convinced me to go here, while I was visiting. Glad I went. Very friendly, patient staff, good variety and quality of yummy "donuts" (including scrumptious bars), fresh daily, of course. Very reasonably priced.
