I was impressed by the service I received at John's Bascom Automotive. I took a friend's car there that was temporarily stored in my driveway for a battery that discharged. After charging the battery a little bit with a portable charger. I expected that they would tell me that I need a new battery. Instead, they tested the battery and found that it was fine. I just didn't take the car on a drive as frequently as I should have to recharge the battery from the alternator. The amount they charged me was reasonable. If you are looking for an honest auto repair shop, this is it. read more

The volvo had an an issue with the cv boot and front axle -- stuff that the dealer had quoted me over $1000 on. I've been to John's Bascom Automotive three times now, and each time I've been so happy! The first time, I had a tire changed on my civic, the second I needed a smog check done, and the third time I had a flat tire on my husband's truck. Each time they were fantastic. There is always someone close to the check-in/waiting room, so you never wait long to explain what you need done. Also, each time I've gotten my car back the same day, usually just a few hours after I drop it off (which definitely has not happened when I take my car in to the dealership for repairs). Their prices are very affordable; granted I have taken my cars in for minor things, but each time I am surprised (in a good way) at the quote and the final bill! Mike is fantastic, and always makes me feel comfortable, which is a rare feeling for me when I take my car in. I never have felt taken advantage of. I had a problem with my car -- obviously making some crazy noise-- and they treated me like a "dumb girl". They couldn't hear the noise and said to bring it back when it made the noise. In January (2018), my Ford Freestyle was constantly overheating, to the point it wouldn't make it 500 feet down the road, without completely shutting down on me and it would spit out coolant like crazy. I figured there was a blockage or hole in the hoses as I had to refill it with coolant almost every time I drove it. Well this time, I realized I just couldn't put it off anymore - it really needed service. So, I took it to the Frontier Ford dealership on Steven's Creek Blvd., in San Jose. After dropping it off and spending $200 for a diagnostic review, the service desk called and told me that my car needed a new coolant reservoir bottle and new hoses, and they said once they replaced everything, they would do a test drive to see if that fixed the overheating issues. An hour later, they called again to tell me the replacement bottle didn't make a difference and they discovered I had a blown gasket head. When I asked the cost to fix it, they told me it would cost about $5-7K due to labor costs (~14 hours) and given the age of my car, (2005 with 183K miles), it wasn't worth it. They convinced me to either plan to give it away or sell it for parts, since according to the Kelly blue book value, it was only worth about $250 (although it's in mint condition!). So, I went to pick it up and got the bill for almost $900!! The labor charge was insane for what little they did! So, I sadly took my car home and thought about donating it to charity. Later that week, my husband and I started car hunting and found this amazing Audi Q5. My Ford sat in my driveway for almost 5 months, when my husband and I realized we should try once again to see about fixing my car since my daughter who just started driving needs a car. We live less than 1/4 mile from John's Bascom Automotive and my husband was able to drive the car there, without it overheating too much or breaking down. He met John and his son Mike, and they said they would take a thorough look at everything and get back to us. Early the next day, they called us to tell us that they'd thoroughly assessed the overheating issue and found that the car didn't have a blown head gasket at all, but instead just needed a new water pump and new radiator hoses. WOW, really?! How did Frontier Ford miss that?! John and Mike (actually, the entire staff) are the most friendly folks and we can't say enough about how thrilled we are with their customer service and pricing! The fix was just under $1300 including parts and labor. We took the Ford back just this week to get an oil change and new brakes. It drives like brand new!! Like it had a tune up or something - it's got more pep and drives like a dream! John's Bascom Automotive has been fantastic! They have integrity and follow-through. I took my car in about 3 weeks ago because the A/C was just blowing out lukewarm air. They were very accomodating in setting up an appointment time, and offered to either drive me to work or loan me a car to use while my car was being worked on. I had been going to John's for several years with no problems. My neighbor had also been taking her car there. A couple years ago she had a problem with John's regarding her car where they didn't fix her car after four tries and charged her for each try. I should have paid more attention to my neighbor's problems. This year I took my car in to have the alternator replaced. When I picked it up, they showed me where coolant was leaking from the head gasket and asked if I wanted them to replace it. I gave them permission to replace it. When I picked the car up, the mechanic told me what a tough job that was and how it was so difficult to removed the old gasket that he had to scrape it off. I thanked him for his perseverance, paid them, about $1000, and took the car home. On my way home I noticed the car was missing and seemed to lack its usual power. I made a note to myself to take it back within the next few days. A couple days later, while driving on the freeway, the oil pressure dropped and I began to hear a dreaded metallic knocking sound. I suspected something terrible had happened inside my engine and I immediately drove to John's. The mechanic who had done the work on my car was there and he checked the oil and found that it was a quart over the fill mark. I commented to them that they must have overfilled it and he said they didn't. Then he into the office to talk to John and they both came out to check out the engine of my car. Within a few minutes they both concluded that a rod bearing had gone bad and there was little they could do with it. They suggested an oil change to a different weight of oil so I could drive it for a few more days and gave me a referral to another auto repair business to have my engine rebuilt. I had paid them another $100 for the oil change and their diagnostic skills. For the next three days, I tried reaching the business John's had referred me to. After three days of leaving messages, someone finally called me back. I explained the situation to her and told her I wanted to have the engine rebuilt. She said she didn't think they did that and asked me to hold for a moment. She came back on the line and told me that they definitely didn't do that. After another day of calling several engine rebuilders in the area, I finally found one to rebuild my engine. I took the car into them and they gave me an estimate and suggested a few upgrades. I signed the papers and they rebuilt my engine. They called me after a few days and told me that the problem was not a rod bearing, but the crankshaft itself. Finally, my car was ready. When I picked it up, the mechanic asked me if anyone had opened the engine recently. I told him about the head gasket work at John's. He told me that happens fairly often that mechanics will open up an engine and scrape or drop debris in there and that plugs up the oil flow and causes surfaces on the crankshaft to overheat and become scored. I asked him for the old crankshaft, paid him over $4000, and drove to John's. I went into the office, talked to John, and we looked at the badly scored crankshaft and I told him what the other mechanic had told me. "I never heard of the mechanic. No, no, no, couldn't have happened." He bought me into the office and showed me parts diagrams of my car and told me how there was no way anything could have been dropped inside the engine, but he couldn't explain what caused the deep scoring on only one end of the crankshaft. He gave me the name and number again of the mechanic he sent me to have my engine rebuilt, remember the one who wouldn't rebuild it. John told me that this guy was an expert and he would know why that happened. I left John's and immediately drove to the other mechanic. I waited for over 45 minutes until he had time to come and look at the crankshaft. He said he was sorry to leave me waiting, but he had called John to get more history on this car (which means that John called him as I was leaving John's.) He looked at it for a moment, then said it could be many things, defective parts, poor oil circulation, excessive heat, water in the oil, yada, yada, and yada. He looked at me and said sometimes when things like this happen, we can never know and it's best to let them go. Bullshit!!!!! Because of John's ineptitude, cowardice to own up to his mistakes and his corrupt deals with other corrupt mechanics, I'm out over $5000. However, since I was able to find a great mechanic, my car is running fine now. I will post that review soon. OK, I've been using yelp for a really long time but I have never created an account......untill now. I took time out of my day to make an account to put this business on blast. So I called this place up yesterday to get my car smogged. When I called i asked if they were busy so they can do my smog and they said "no". when i got there, 3 employees were laughing and talking about random stuff. I got totally ignored until i spoke up and said i needed a smog check. one of the guys said it was an hour wait. whatevers, i ended up doing it, while filling out the paperwork they said if i didn't have the dmv renewal slip it was going to be a 50 dollar extra charge. (holy shit! are you kidding me?) and they said "don't worry if the car doesn't pass we can inspect it and fix it for you". well i ended up giving them all the paperwork and they said turnaround time was 1.5 hrs and they were going to call me when its done. OK no big deal, so i went home. 3 hours later i ended up calling and they said it was ready. I show up and they said it failed the smog and I can leave it there to get it inspected( for $150) and they can call me with an estimate for the repair. I pretty much told them to go fuck themselves and took my car. I called my mechanic and told him what happened and I read him the emission results. He laughed at me and said they probably didn't warm up my car because it barley went over the emission limit. the catalytic converter needs to me warmed up. and he said "if he wanted the car to fail, they can make it fail" he referred a place where they are trustworthy and its a "test only" business. I took it there right away, the guy said they were trying to rip me off and showed me that they even wrote the milage wrong on the paperwork they gave me. ( it was 100k difference). this place did the smog and BOOM! it passed no tricks, no BS no nothing. I'm warning people, don't take ur car at this location! these assholes will try to screw you read more

I was a long time customer of John's Bascom Automotive since it was John's Chevron across the street in the 1970s. John always treated me well, did good work and reasonably priced. But now John is retiring and has turned the business over to Mike and Shane. The good old days are gone. I took my car in for a smog test. They said it didn't pass and I left the car with them to fix. They charged me $485 for new spark plugs and diagnostics and said the car still didn't pass the smog test. If fact the smog test was worse after their work than before. So I took the car to State of Calif Bureau of Automotive Repair referee. State of Calif tested the car and they said it passed the smog test. So what did Shane and Mike do for $485? read more

I should have done my yelp research first! Now I'll know to see yelp first to learn what my risks are. A family member recommended John's as a friendly, competent place that was always busy -- you need an appointment, he said. So I went expecting to make the appointment to come back a few days later for the actual work. The issue was that my 10 year old truck did not pass the smog test. - EVAP Ctrl System Small Leak Detected. I had the test done at a "Smog Test Only" place" When I got to John's I talked with Mike. He looked at the test result form and told me: "Yes we see this all the time (or frequently) it is usually (or many times) a leak at the gas cap or the filler pipe. If it is that we can do the work for $100 to $200." So I made the appointment. When I showed up for the appointment (and here is the beginning of my problem with them) Mike was not there. I think it was John himself that greeted me and enter my name and so forth into the computer and took my keys - said someone would call with an exact estimate. Of course I am still thinking $100 to $200 because that is what Mike told me. My mistake here is that I did not actually look at the paper (I think) John had me sign until later when Mike called with the TRUE ESTIMATE of $580 which was way beyond my budget -- I'll give away the truck before having to pay that amount for an air leak. Obviously we had more words both on the phone and later when I went in to pay $147 for the "diagnosis" work. My trust in what my family member's report about only having had good experiences at John's had me let my guard down. My learning, and advice to you, is to be very skeptical of what they say before they actually look and test the car and then make sure you actually understand that the "out of hand" estimate at the beginning is nothing they will be held to. In other words DO NOT TRUST THEM either before they do the work -- or now that I have read the other reviews here on yelp -- AFTER THEY HAVE DONE THE WORK. I'm sure they have their own complaints about customers but Mike needs to work much harder than he did here to make sure the customer hears him and make sure that appropriate expectations are set before the work is started. Do not take your car to John's Bascom Automotive. I repeat, do not take your car to John's Bascom Automotive. This has been the worst auto shop I've ever taken my car to. I originally brought my car here because of how close it was to my house and also because it got good reviews on Yelp. Boy was I wrong. I had a problem with my horn one day so I brought it in to have it serviced. I paid for the repairs then a few days later it wasn't working again. So I took it back and they replaced the entire horn this time around (and charged me of course). A few days later the horn wasn't working again so I had to take it back. This time they said that there was some part inside that was damaged and that it would cost me around $300 to have it fixed along with all the other repairs that they had serviced and charged me for. I decided to hold off on the horn until I had the money. Then a week later my timing belt went out so I took it back to John's for an estimate. They quoted me close to $3,000, which I thought was way too much money. Then one of the mechanics offered me money to buy my car off of me. There was no way I was going to sell my car to them for only a couple hundred dollars when it was worth closer to $3,000. I finally took my car to another mechanic to get a new estimate. This guy quoted me $2,100 and stuck to his asking price and didn't charge me a penny more. I'm so glad I took my car somewhere else. I think that John's Automotive is a rip off and the people working there are totally shady. read more

We no longer bring our vehicles to John's Bascom. Over the years we noticed a pattern that 50 percent of the time the work would be completed correctly and the other 50 percent we would need to return a second or third time, at additional cost, to have the work correctly completed. We also found that small problems often required "complete equipment replacement". Earlier this year we had an electronic code flash for the steering. John's Bascom told us that it would cost at least $200 just to diagnose the problem. This time we took it to another mechanic who diagnosed AND fixed it for $165. We were disappointed because the owners and staff are all very nice and we liked them, but have no choice to go elsewhere for better service. read more

Don't bring your car here. I do not even think they test drive the cars before or after working on them. I had brought my car there to check on a noise coming from the transmission. Without looking at the car they guessed what it might be. They didn't even write down the symptoms, he just wrote to check a couple of parts. I get a call later saying it was exactly what he thought and I had to replace both parts he checked. When I picked up the car, not only was it exactly the same, but there was a new issue so I had to bring it back the next day. They did fix the new issue free of charge but I am still out hundreds of dollars for some parts and repairs I did not need. I won't be going back. read more

Took my car in today b/c it started really rough and the check engine light came on. So due to this conveniently located auto shop which is walking distance to our house I took it here. The owner, I believe, took my info and quoted me $285 for a vehicle inspection. Quite a ridiculously expensive quote if you ask me b/c we are used to free inspections up at Norfolk Auto in San Mateo where we used to live. (Highly recommend them if living in the San Mateo area). So, we decided to drop it off, but while driving away we second guessed ourselves due to the high quote of $285 and returned just 15 minutes later to pick our car back up and bring it somewhere else. I am very glad we did this b/c upon returning and picking up our car, the owner, which was very respectful and understanding of our decision, relayed the info to a very disgruntled laborer, who wears really cool dark sunglasses who then went to get my car and brought it up to the front and instead of stopping where I was waiting, drove it passed me and parked it and then instead of giving me the keys walked right passed me and gave them to the owner to then give to me. Obviously he was not happy with the decision we made to pick the car back up and his bitterness easily reassured us that we made the right decision to not have this shop look at our car. We will never recommend or be taking our cars to this shop again thanks to the over priced estimates (dealer prices) and that disrespectful bald guy who had a huge case of the Monday's. read more

I was going to johns for quite a while with good repairs and service but I began to notice the absence of John and a different line up of mechanics and also a rise in his prices. Then the quality of service began to dissipate . The brake system I had his place look at twice and payed to have fixed was only fixed temporarily and is infact malfunctioning again. The coolant system I paid to have him fix only had a temporary bandaid fix And in fact my radiator went out entirely, I replaced it my self only to find that the hoses that I asked him to replace all of infact he only did some (he only charged me for some to be replaced)and the hoses he did replace his mechanics did not even tighten the hose clamps properly. Also the original thermostat was in the car and was malfunctioning this should be the first thing to change.bottom line I found johns Bascom auto has lost its reputability and reliability. I brought my 2006 mazda 6 in when the check engine light came on. They were up front with me from the beginning when I told them the code i got when I ran it from home, and they said it could be a number of things, but would have to do the diagnostic test to figure out the codes. Mike was the one at the desk who helped with my initial drop off and he was very thorough, helpful and friendly, it was very convenient was able to leave it at the end of day so they could work on it first thing the very next day. I got a call the promptly the next day The tech working on my car (Shane) did the diagnostic and explained to me exactly what the problem was, and not in some mechanic speak jargon, but in a basic people language, he said I needed my evap detection pump replaced because it stopped working. He even went as far as explaining what the purpose of the pump was and what it did, and surprisingly I actually understood, and quoted me the price. I then went and did a bunch of internet searching to see if other mazda drivers had this issue, and sure enough it was a common problem, just like Shane had said it was. (side note, Mazda knows of the problem and of course is greedy and didn;t do a recall on the part) so i went ahead and agreed to have them fix it. Shane was straightforward with me and even said that I could consider it because my car wouldn't blow up or anything if i didn't do it right away, and from that point I was sold, because it became clear to me that he wasn't trying to force me into doing something, or take advantage of me :) He quoted me a price, but was very clear that if X happens, then it might cost more, but if Y happens; then it could cost less. I got the call today and luckily Y happened, so it ended up being less then anticipated, but I am so grateful for them and their ability to communicate with customers and they are extremely professional. I did meet JOhn when i first got there, and when I called to schedule a time to come in, and he was very nice and friendly and made sure I spoke to exactly who I needed to. We've been going here for years. Must have had John work on 20 different cars. Always top notch work, honest, and very reasonable...until....his son Mike took over. It appears John is semi-retired and Mike is all about profit and up-selling. I've had two dubious experiences regarding unnecessary charges, and I just had my third eye-popping bill for about 30% more than I expected. The price was sky-high, like dealer pricing. A few phone calls to highly rated Yelp shops revealed about 20% difference. Sorry John, time to move on. It was great while it lasted, but I can't justify your prices, particularly for long-time customers. read more

I am very impressed with this owner-operated repair shop that has been in business for over 35 years. I have a 1991 Honda that needed to have the A/C recharged. It is not easy to find a mechanic that can recharge a pre-1996 A/C system but John's can do it. They are very professional, friendly, the job only took about an hour, and the price was very reasonable. I highly reccomend John's. They replaced parts that they were not even asked to check and I took it back to have something checked that started after they had their hands on the vehicle and they charged me to check this out????? Ended up the radiator blew yesterday due to their changing parts they were never asked to look at and the car started leaking at all hoses after they touched it. I have never had a problem with the cooling system until they touched the vehicle. They do not deserve any stars...maybe a -20 stars. I've gone to John's Bascom Automotive twice, and I was very happy with both experiences. The first time was around 2013 when they inspected our older model Toyota Rav 4. I suspected a new clutch was needed, and they confirmed my suspicions. However, they also informed me that there was also a good deal of other work that would need to be done before too long, and they said they could tell from a cursory look that the cost of the repairs would exceed the value of the car. While I was disappointed by the prospect of having to upgrade my vehicle, I greatly appreciated the alert before I had dumped a bunch of money into repairs on something that would need to be replaced soon anyway. I bought a new vehicle and didn't have a need to return again for four years until I was on the hunt for a used second vehicle in 2017. Managing the logistics of getting a seller to an auto shop of my choosing could have been a challenge, but Mike (I think it was) was incredibly accommodating and made the entire process much less stressful than it could have been. Don't ever, ever go here. We are out $3,000!!! on a re-built turbo....THAT DID NOT NEED TO BE REBUILT!!! We made every attempt to resolve this with the owner. After the turbo was rebuilt, the original problem with the truck was unresolved...they claimed the turbo was the problem. I'm not a mechanic...they are the "experts" and I trusted them. I ended up taking the truck elsewhere and truly had the problem corrected. And my new mechanic, after more thorough invesigation, found that the turbo was never the problem in the first place. My truck was not even functioning after John's Bascom auto rebuilt the turbo it. And they could never fix the problem I was having with the truck despite the numerous times I returned to have them address the issue the truck was having. I am now considering taking the owner to small claims court. Save yourself the hassle. GO ELSEWHERE. Trust me. These guys suck and will take total advantage of you. They do not deserve to be in business. read more
