I had been looking for a shop in the Bay Area to do an engine and transmission swap in my 2001 Chevy Suburban. When I called B and J and talked with Mark, it was different than the other shops. He was interested and listened and worked with me immediately on getting me a quote to do the job. He went over different options and I settled on the reman engine and tranny direct from GM with a 3yr 100k warranty. There were a few other things wrong with the truck (AC, Heater Core, transfer case leaky, radiator leaky) and he took on those extra tasks with no hesitation. Throughout the process he would call me and let me know what was going on. I was able to get pictures of the empty engine bay and the new engine and tranny before they went in. The entire process took less than two weeks. When I picked up my vehicle, it was ready to go, no hiccups, wrote the check and I was on my way. I waited a few days before writing the review to ensure there were no minor issues that popped up, because I was definitely expecting SOMETHING to go awry. But it hasn't. My Suburban drives like a brand new Chevy! Feels great, AC, heater, everything works. Mark is absolutely amazing. I had an issue with a car battery and we called him to see if they had the battery. He had to get the battery from another spot but he made sure to have it by the time I got there. I was in a rush and his team took care of me right away. While his team was fixing the battery he noticed that the air pressure in the tires looked a little bit low so he asked someone to look into that as well. The whole team is incredibly sweet and I felt very safe there even as a young female person of color went by herself. Mark at B&J Auto really helped me out. Had my car towed to him after my gear shift stopped working. Fixed that problem for me. BUT- he also noticed that I didn't have a drivers side windshield wiper, so he put one on for me for free (it had flown off on the freeway cause I hadn't put it on properly & hadn't gotten around to getting a replacement) AND put a new bolt in my skid plate (went to a different place to get my oil changed mid June, bolt fell out a few days later while I was on a trip, so I had a scrap of towel holding the skid plate to my front bumper, and it's been like that since). I would say this place is OK. They seem to know what they are doing and sortof fixed my truck. I had two brake noises, one where the calipers were clunking and needed to be greased and two where the brake pads were squeaking. They did grease my calipers and that noise went away. But the brake pads have the exact same familar squeak. Strange, considering B&J "supposedly" resurfaced my rotors and replaced my brake pads. The owner and mechanic was very nice and finished on time and within the cost they quoted. I simply expected more from all of these glowing reviews. I will keep looking for that great mechanic that hopefully exists. Their shop has a strange layout requiring cars to block each other in, I am worried that they may move cars mid job or get hurried because of this. Update: I swapped my front rotors and brake pads about two months ago and one of only two bolts that holds one of the front calipers on was stripped out. Using an air tool on such a small bolt is lazy and causes damage like this when the bolt isn't hand threaded first. This is the reason I will never go back here. This is the first shop my vehicle has ever been to and I don't own air tools, only proper tourque wrenches. read more

Took my 07 Camry here after many a Yelper says its a winner. They serviced the AC and put some dye in so they can trace it if it leaks out. The price was a little higher than I am used to paying but am satisfied with the work and the way they handled the transaction. I came in and was attended to immediately. They looked at my car straight away and told me they could work on it the next day. The estimate was 130 and the bill was 180. Close enough. When you trouble shoot cars you never know what time it takes. So far so good. Taking my truck there next. Well it had to happen, the AC stopped working again. I bring it in and Mark the in-charge person I spoke to says we put dye in it. If its leaking we will know. His staff trouble shoots it and its blowing hot and cold out of left and right?? Turns out he resets the computer on day two of working on my car and walla. Everything is back to normal. I get ready for a stiff bill and Mark declines to charge me cuz there's nothing wrong with it. Computer glitch! I'm feeling good about this, very good. read more

Okay so the car situation is turning into a nightmare of epic proportions, we've been having to drive it around "at least 700 miles" (according to the dealership's maintenance department which I finally called to find out wtf was the deal with the smog sensors not gathering enough data to tell the smog checking computer that the car was good to go) And we just found out yesterday the battery was needing washers to stabilize it and the +terminal was jiggling loose and may have reset the computer while we were driving it around all week. (This is not B&J's fault this was because of new battery boyfriend put in, there were no washers on the old one and new one is slightly different dimensions, and needs washer to keep it steady, whereas the old one was stock and did not) So the car passed smog on the mechanical end, but because the sensors haven't held data yet it won't pass final. Basically to prove to the state of California that the car is environmentally sound, we are having to WASTE GAS... However, B & J have been pretty decent, it was a little more expensive than we were hoping... but that's pretty much every car repair for everyone anywhere regardless of who you go to. That's just car repair. But their customer service was very good, and they did a very thorough job checking my poor car over and fixing everything that was wrong with it. He even noticed the battery cable was loose and tightened it up, but we both assumed it was just because BF hadn't had the right torque available, tool wise, when putting the new battery in the day before we took it over, the problem really is literally the size of a washer and the vibration of the car. I recommend them, they were very helpful and got my car running again (after it had been stored and not running for 6 years) in one day. DEFINITELY call and make an appointment first, their awesomeness has resulted in a long wait if you don't have an appointment, but if your car CAN be fixed, these guys will fix it. Plus they answered all my questions, explained everything to me, and there was none of that "'Talking to Girl' Mode" crap you get from some other mechanics. read more

LOVE this place! It's so hard to find an honest mechanic, especially as a woman. But I don't have to worry when I bring my car to B&J. I have never been disappointed, and always feel like I'm given such an honest detail of the work being done. This most recent trip was just for a check-up. Turns out, the cheap oil change I had a Jiffy Lube less than a month ago, wasn't actually a change. Mark let me know that the oil in my car was extremely dirty and didn't appear to have been changed in a long time. He replaced my oil for free, because I had just had it "changed." As usual, I visited my local yelp.com pages to find a good, honest, trustworthy mechanic to service my SUV. I made sure B&J had legitimate reviews and called Mark directly for a quote. From the moment I made the first phone call, he was friendly, courteous, and anxious to earn my business. Nothing was really wrong with my car, but in 5 years of owning it, I'd never had a single thing done to it aside from oil changes, and we were ready to take it on a 3-state drive to Utah. I brought the car in the next day at 8am, and he called me within a few hours to let me know what I needed to fix before I left and what could slide. I actually thought I needed new brakes, and he said they looked great and had life ahead of them. I appreciated this info because he easily could have charged me for new brakes without me knowing that they had 50% of their life left. We decided to have everything don that he suggested, and he even threw in a few extras that really helped us out. I also mentioned that maybe I should get my new tires from Goodyear because they have a 0% interest deal right now, and he offered to offer us some special financing through him. I've never even heard of an individual doing that, and I really appreciated his thinking outside of the box. I was referred to B&J by a very good friend of mine who has been going there for a long time with several of his cars. I have two older BMWs, and was getting tired of the games and expense involved in going to shops that specialize in servicing BMWs. I always felt like they were adding things that were not necessary and charging me an arm and a leg. I decided to give B&J a try, soI gave one of the owners, Mark, a call. Mark was very helpful and offered to arrange for my car to be towed to his shop. I decided to use AAA, and he was fine with that. I told him the "symptoms" over the phone and he seemed to have some ideas about what was going on, even without seeing my car. I got the impression that he really knows his stuff when it comes to car repair. Once I got my car there, I signed the paperwork for him to diagnose the problem and was on my way. Mark called me several times to tell me what he had found out and ask me what I wanted to do. He gave me the costs of the repairs and the estimated time to complete it. I appreciated the open communication, and I really felt like he was being completely honest with me. For me, it is rare to find a mechanic that makes me feel like I am being treated fairly and with respect (especially since I am a woman and mechanics tend to "talk down" to women). I approved the repairs over the phone and he began the work. There was a delay caused by the dealership sending the wrong part (not the one Mark ordered), and he called to let me know about it, which I appreciated. When I picked up my car, Mark went over the invoice in detail and explained everything he had done. My car was running great and I was happy with the overall experience. So there I am stuck at the PruneYard with a dirty cheatin car battery. I always replace them and usually they start acting up a bit before they just die. Okay I opened my hood...nothing...then I looked for a mobile mechanic...nothing...then I plugged battery mechanic into Yelp and I see B & J Automotive and it's less than a mile. I throw a Hail Mary yelp to Mark over at B& J and he says "let me see who I can send over." I'll call you back. Now my cell phone is running out of juice but he does call me back. He does send someone over! He starts the car in less than five minutes. My hood was already up. I follow him back. Another five minutes. They even picked up and dropped off my car at my office about two miles away. The new brakes felt different than my old brakes (which I have since learned is normal), so I brought the car back and they flushed and refilled the brake lines for free, just to satisfy me. My Jeep needed a big service, and as I was about to make an appointment at the dealership, my husband pointed out that I had NEVER been happy with the dealership's service or prices. Never. Not once. So he suggested I turn to my trusted Yelp to find a better place. B&J came up with 5 stars, which I'm pleased to say are well-deserved. I called Mark, told him my situation, and he told me to bring the car in -- he could get to it right away. He even offered directions -- friendly as can be. His shop is conveniently located near downtown Campbell, tucked in a fenced-in area behind a few other automotive shops. I explained to Mark what the car's symptoms were, and he quickly recognized the cause. He fixed it for exactly the price he had estimated, and had it done right when he said he would. Last week I needed to have my tires aligned. I called the place that the tire salesman had recommended, and they said that, with a $20 referral coupon, the alignment would cost $89. I then called Mark -- he immediately said he could do it for $75 (before I even told him the other shop's price). Over to his shop I went, and he got right to it. He said it would be done by 2:00, and at 1:57 I got the phone call saying it was ready. Talk about reliable! When I told Mark about his good reviews on Yelp, he was very happy to hear it. Have only used B&J for a short time, but so far very impressed. First test was a brake inspection on our Pathfinder. They were busy, but the owner, Mark, pulled one of his mechanics to take a look immediately; told me I'm good for another 10k miles. A little glazing, probably from a Sonora Pass trip I took this summer. They could have said my brakes were near the end and gotten a couple hundred from me that day, but they didn't. Then I took them our Honda Civic with 160k miles. It has been in and out of Midas 5 times in the past year for a recurring oil leak. The workmanship was sub-par there and I finally gave up with their free warranty work and decided to pay someone else to fix it instead. Now, finally, it doesn't leak. Moreover, we discovered more than a few major workmanship errors from Midas. It was a complete re-do of their work and it cost me a lot but now my daughter has a reliable car for her college years. Mark was thorough, called me daily with status reports, sometimes 2-3x per day, and has documented the prior workmanship errors for me. He even called the following week just to check in on us. His shop is a little cramped and they look horribly busy. They offered me a free shuttle ride home and the driver, one of their junior mechanics, has worked for Mark for 7 years. The car was in and out in 3 days for a major service, well within expectations. Overall, very thorough, knowledgeable, efficient, personable. Fees were fair. Highly recommend. read more

I first found B&J many yrs ago when the head gasket on our Outback failed. Mark (owner) shared knowledge of a "secret recall" on the gasket and, based on that info, I was able to get the dealer to cover the repair. He could have simply had his guys do it and I wouldn't have known. I also later had a car with rodent damage that he was able to diagnose and fix. The EU mechanics at this shop can work on any kind of car. They are not like dedicated shops that only follow the auto makers' shop manuals. Amazing Service! I found Mark and his staff to be friendly, helpful, and courteous. I brought my wife's car in early Friday morning since it sounded like the brakes were bad. I left the car and Mark set up a rental car for me so I could get to work and get around as needed while the car was being worked on. Mark called me shortly after I dropped off the car and confirmed that the front brakes and rotors were gone and that the back brakes were close to failing as well. So I had him replace them all in addition he noticed a few other minor things that needed to be fixed and so I had him do the work also. Overall the service was great the staff was friendly and the repair process was painless and easy.
