Read about John's Cafe through a recent article in the Dallas Observer. I live in Frisco (commiserations welcomed) but as it turned out I was heading down to the 'Rally to Save the American Dream' on Feb 26 in south Dallas so I thought I'd check it for myself. No diner bar to sit at. No tipping either - order at the counter. Food tastes fresh and simple. Pretty good overall.

The portions are huge and biscuits are from scratch. Everything is yummy. The walls are covered with well deserved accolades. No complaints. Delicious food in a clean cozy diner. read more

Husband and I both ordered omelets... came with hashbrowns (choice of grits) and biscuits (choice of toast - i chose toast... ).... the lady taking the order didnt ask my husband his preference, she just gave him the choices i had made. it was a good plate.. i loved that they grilled the toast... would i go out of my way to come here again? nah... prob not. read more

I've only been there for breakfast and it's very good. Sundays you may have to wait 45 minutes... but it's worth it. I usually go about once per month and always get the Gyro Omelet. If you sit at the middle tables you are in for some interesting table talk from all the regulars. read more

Perfect for a cheap, diner breakfast. My favorite is the pancakes, and they have the shredded hashbrowns that I prefer as well. It can get very crowded on weekends, but they are quick to get your food out to you once you order. read more

Ive been here several times as i live in this neighborhood and i went only because The Goldrush is closed on sundays. Im hesistant to go because the lady at the front is always so rude, well i went today. As we walked in a table was being cleaned and i told my husband go ahead and get that table. He and my grandson went to sit. I got in line and one of their employees came to me and said "are they with you?" He pointed to my husband and i said "yes". He then told me you have to order before you sit and i said yea thats why im here in line. He disnt look happy, and said "but those people are before you" and i was like ok yea we are all in line. So im thinking he was trying to tell me they had dibs on getting the table first. Well its not my fault if people are not smart enough to wak in and get a table first. He was rude and embarrassing as he told me in front of the whole restaurant. I went and got my people and left. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN!! read more

Awesome home style cooking with great prices. I suggest going for breakfast, although the lunches are just as good. Parking can be difficult at times but I think you might be able to get away with parking at the CVS. read more

I. Freaking. Love. John's. It's just a little neighborhood spot where you can get good food, quickly. It's packed in there on Sunday with the hungover and/or after church brunch crowd, but we've never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes for a table. You might try sitting family style in the middle and making some new friends if there aren't any booths available. You won't find anything with seasonal fresh herbs or artisanal cheeses, but you also won't find anyone wearing designer jeans and high heels at 9am trying to find a mate (I'm talking about you, Everyone At Breadwinners!) so come as you are and don't worry about it. The biggest problem I've had is finding parking as the lot is small and some of the tenants have a couple of dedicated spaces. If you're lucky, John himself will deliver your food to your table after bellowing your number. The Gyro omelette is one of my favorites. Just like it's name implies, its gyro meat, grilled peppers, onions, and cheese inside an omelette. Perfect brunch, as it's sort of lunch food and sort of breakfast food. The breakfast special (2 eggs, meat, bread, hashbrowns) for really cheap is another good option. Before I gave up eating bread products, I had their excellent pancakes and biscuits. The pancakes were just the right amount of crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and their biscuits were perfectly flaky. Almost enough to make me fall off the carb wagon. Again. The bacon is both thick, and crispy (hard to pull off), and you get about 4 slices, more than enough. The coffee is good, "diner" coffee and you just help yourself, so no excuse if yours gets cold or you run out. Sometimes a helpful patron will make a pass and fill everyone's cup. We came here for Mother's Day so it was super busy. The food was nothing special I could make everything better at home honestly but it's within walking distance and we were hung over so we went there. You order at the counter, take a seat and they bring your food out but people were sitting before ordering food because they were scared they weren't gonna get a seat then everyone who has ordered is standing waiting for people to get up and leave. The establishment needs to just be more firm with customers taking a seat before you order, it's rude and uncomfortable for everyone else but no one did anything. Also you can just feel people watching you while you eat pressuring you to get up. Not the kind of environment I want that early. Not to mention the cashier lady was rude, did not Smile, did not greet I'm not sure how she has a job. I work in the industry and she would not be my choice for FOH. read more

My first job in the world was across the street from them at what was Western Auto in the 80's. I loved their food back then. Came back on 7/4/19... WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!!! One of the all time great breakfast joints. Best pancakes in town, same for the hash browns. The rest is just plain good. I see some people carping over the "order first, seat second" policy. They just don't understand that it won't work any other way in a small place like this. You always end up with a seat before the food comes out. This family owned cafe has been around for a long time and continues to draw crowds. It's clean and airy and the food is always great, otherwise it would't have the following that it does. I mentioned breakfast, but the lunch fair is just as good. Great burgers and a marvelous roast beef sandwich stand out. It can be quirky at times, if you can't roll with this, then you need to be at Denny's and leave this gem to those of us who love it for what it is, a great little neighborhood cafe. read more

You have to stand in line and order before sitting but I cleaned my plate and so did my daughter and her friend. For two kids and an adult it was very good breakfast food and affordable with a down home feel. If you don't mind standing in line for some time it is worth the wait! read more

This is a nice, local breakfast place. It looked busy but I'm glad we got a seat right away. I really liked that they made a kid-friendly Mickey pancake for my girls. I also enjoyed my meal as well. I think it's made from scratch, but not sure. read more

If youre hungover, havn't slept from the night before, or still drunk, forget breadwinners. This place is what Mom used to make for breakfast to cure those head hurts. I enjoy the breakfast special and ask them to mix some peppers and onions in your hashbrowns. YUM. Even mom never did it for me like that. John's could become a five star for me for best basic breakfast place in Dallas, but I'm still exploring my morning options before I crown John's king. I went in to just have biscuits and gravy because that is my gold standard for a good breakfast place. John's makes their biscuits daily. It is a very good golden brown biscuit with good flavor without adding butter. The outside was crisp but not hard. The gravy is a basic pepper gravy made with milk. I'm still looking for that great sausage gravy, but for a meatless gravy this is the best I've had to date. John's Cafe is a place I could visit several times a week. I had the breakfast special which came with two eggs, homemade hash browns like my mom makes, toast or biscuit and at least three pieces of crisp tasty bacon. I may have had four. I added a side of gravy and coffee to my order which rang up just shy of a ten spot. John and the staff are friendly and someone will come around with coffee and cream or you can get up and get it yourself. The menu also offers other great options. If you like Baklava don't skip out on dessert. John's wife makes this yummy treat. For me this is the 2013 Best Breakfast in D. Try it out. read more

Walking in this damn place I came in with certain expectations....... I came to check out all the damn hype and see what this place was about. I really didn't expect much to be honest from walking in and it was sad to see my fatass homeboy trying to sit in the damn booth with him being 6'4 and weighing 250 but after moving the table closer to me he managed to squeeze in. We were instantly greeted with smiles from both customers and workers and made us feel secure about our food and how good it will be. We were both very pleased and full after our meal. Me and my fatass friend both run a brunch joint and from two chefs/owners. Good job guys. Keep up the damn good work you guys do. We will be back soon whenever we get to enjoy another day off. If you're looking for great atmosphere and a super friendly wait staff, go somewhere else. If you want great home cooking served hot and fast, you've come to the right place. All the basics prepared perfectly: home made hash browns, biscuits from scratch, and pancakes that could almost be desert. I strongly recommend the Gyro omlette. read more

John's is an unpretentious breakfast and lunch joint with reasonably priced diner food, Greek additions to the menu, and good service. My partty melt was the best I had eaten in years. I want to go back sometime and try the Gyro Omelette. They look huge, almost as big as a burrito at Chipotle. It was pretty good breakfast food for what we paid. It was all cooked well and not cooked to death like most cheap diners seem to like to do.
