Called ahead to order and be able to pick up at the window. They said food would be ready in 15 minutes so I got to the window 20 minutes after the call to give them a few extra minutes. Sat at the window for 15 MINUTES before even being acknowledged by an employee! I could see multiple employees inside the restaurant standing around, they would even make eye contact with me but refuse to come to the window. After someone finally comes to the window they don't even apologize or anything. She just says "$21.00". Got my order about 5 minutes later, one item was missing an ingredient that I paid extra for so after waiting another five minutes and finally waving them down to come to the window, I tell her it's missing an item and she just takes it without apologizing or anything. Food was mediocre at best but I won't blame the cooks because it's not their fault it had been sitting there for thirty minutes by the time we got it. Never again. My husband and I were EXTREMELY disappointed with our last meal at John's Place. We were regular customers. Our last experience was horrible. Their understaffed, and rude. Here's what happened on our last visit. My husband and I received our food, fine. I ordered the chicken dinner. This comes with salad, chicken, baked potato, ice cream, and coffee. When I got to my chicken, the inside was fully cooked, but ice cold. How? I told our waitress. She took it back and said she would correct the problem. When she came back to my table, I found it a little odd that the issue had been fixed that fast. I flipped my chicken over. The same chicken I was eating and biting off of, was stuck back in the grease... where other customer's food has and will be cooked. (Yeah, I get the heat kills the bacteria, but it's still unprofessional and disturbing). After that, my chicken was extremely dry and rubbery. My husband went to the front to tell the waitress the chicken wasn't edible. She was so loud and rude about the issue, I could hear her clear in the back of the room. Also, everything cooked that night, was reheated in a microwave. My husband ordered the chicken quesadilla. Usually, it's juicy and amazing. This past time, it was rubbery, dry, and burnt on the inside. My biscuits and gravy was unusually clumpy. The only edible thing from there that night, was the strawberries they cut up for my daughter. I will never be returning. John's Place came to us by an accident of timing and needing gasoline. We asked the attendant at the gas station for a good place to eat in 29 Palms. John's Place was suggested and was it ever good. A little like a diner and the menu said "generous" portions. And portions were generous. I had the brisket sandwich which came with fried zucchini and onion rings. I'm not sure where all the good reviews of this place come from. First of all, it was about 85 degrees outside and just about the same inside. The place is remodeled, yes, but unfortunately still has a low-class feel to it, due to the dirtiness. Floor was un-swept, we cleared our own table to sit, bathrooms were dirty (hair in the sink), flies buzzing around us as we ate (I used the menu to kill one) and a waitress chowing down her food at the front table as we walked in. Really?! We had a hard time enjoying our food as we were so skeezed out by the uncleanliness. My Denver omelette was okay (by the way, someone needs to proofread their menus), but the sliced cheese on top made me laugh. The waffles were waaaayyy too sweet, like sugar in the batter, which was weird. Coffee was hot but NOT strong, as other reviewers have stated. Service was slow. And to top it all off, you can't tip on a credit card, which they are aware of, so they are jipping their waitresses! read more

been to the yucca valley Johns Place over the years but been here to the 29 palms John's Place hoping for more of the delicious food, but what I got the past two times was a horrible experience. Up most the night with a bad stomach sickness, burgers were pretty think so was the buns, looks like someone stuck flat plate on top on the burgers and pressed down, everything in it looked like it sat out for a long time, lettuce wasn't fresh. The stuff on the burgers were very lacking, First day they opened I went there in the evening when it was dark the burgers weren't bad, but the onion rings sucked horrible. They have the nerve to shove anything out of the kitchen even if there is burnt paper all over the onion rings. That's what it looked like, that's what it tasted like. weeks later... Last night what I ordered and what I got was even worse experience. My friend calls the place before we placed our order told them about the first day experience, the person on the phone said they see about making right the onion rings, but instead nothing was done at all about it. The food I had last night was awful the respect of the business and to the customers last night was disgraceful. After we had our food, we called back and asked for a manager about why our order was bad. Manager had a I don't give a crap attitude about not being able to help me in anyway. Told me the reason why the food was awful the first time was because of a kitchen fire, yet they still gave out the food out of the kitchen even when it was covered in burnt paper. read more

We always try to eat local rather than at a chain. So, we tried John's Place based on the number of stars. Lesson learned: read the reviews. Our food was typical diner food, nothing extraordinary (breakfast). My son had a waffle with blueberries, for an extra $1.50. Sadly, the blueberries were clearly thawed from frozen. The rest of our food, biscuits and gravy, grilled cheese, and chicken fried steak, were full. The gravy was from a can or possibly a jar, but definitely not homemade. Once we ordered, our server did not return again. We had finished our meal, and had to flag someone else down for my daughter's apple juice and husband's toast. We had all finished eating, mind you. I finally went to pay, without ever having received the toast. Did we need the toast? No. But, it came with the meal. I understand they were busy, but it's a restaurant. It gets busy. When I went to pay, I said we had never received the toast and the server was standing right behind the cashier. She didn't say a word. Still, I tipped 20% because no more than one star for the experience. Next time, I'll drive over to Joshua Tree to eat at another local restaurant. read more

Good food. I had a gyro combo with zucchini and my husband had a double burger combo with onion rings. Everything tasted great and the zucchini were the skinny ones which I love. They gave you plenty of ranch to dip them They came by the table 3 times to make sure everything was ok. I would definitely recommend this place. We visit 29 Palms occasionally and we always eat at Johns Place as often as possible. Amazing real burgers -- even buffalo burgers. Big portions and friendly service. Omelets are tasty and really have good amounts in them of the described ingredients. My spinach and feta omelet was perfect. Coffee is excellent even if you order at midday. I asked for no whipped cream and I got a mountain of it, my waffle was black and tasted of carbon and pure sugar. The bacon was dry and seriously tasted a day old. My mom went there to have breakfast. She had her service animal with her and documentation to prove it as well. The waitress told my mom she couldn't have her service animal on the bench, so she put her on the ground under the table of the booth. The dog didn't make a peep and did her job. Someone else came and complained about it and after again being questioned about the legitimacy of her service animal she produced her documentation. The waitstaff took it to the back to show their manager. She was told that her animal isn't a service animal but an ESA (emotional support animal). Now, I'm not sure who there has a doctorates degree in medicine to give diagnoses there. Her documents DO NOT say anything about her animal being an ESA. It says as plain as day light "service animal" and lists what she is diagnosed with. The door to the establishment has a sign welcoming service animals. According to the waitstaff they only allow service animals that are for the blind or who cannot do for themselves. Why even bother having the service animal sign if you're going to pick and choose which ones to let in. I get that the manager has the right to refuse service to anyone. My mother and her service animal didn't do anything to interrupt anyone's meal, the animal wasn't making any noises or going up to anyone. She was calm and did her job. The kicker in all this is that SBCSD was there and told my mother that her animal wasn't a service animal but instead an ESA. Again, another person who thinks they're a doctor. My mom had all the documentation to prove her animal to be a service animal and was treated unfairly in this establishment for no apparent reason. read more

John's Place used to be such an awesome place that I could not wait to go to yucca valley to eat there. So, I and friends could not wait until they finally opened in Twentynine Palms. After multiple visits, I been disappointed every time. I hope they step it up so that the 29 branch might be as successful as they are in Yucca. I tried to help them by calling in complaints, in an effort to help them improve and succeed, and only found myself arguing. I love John's when it's time for the family to go out! Everyone likes something different. One child likes to have breakfast at dinner and the other wants cheeseburgers for breakfast. I like to mix and match foods to build my own meal and it's always an opportunity for my husband to eat the foods we don't make at home. I told him I would just go down there and order and pick it up and bring it to the house that was a mistake, I got there not knowing this from not being there before that the drive-through place is just a pick up window I sat there and watch no one came for quite sometime, then one other waitresses came to the window and said this is not a ordering window. So I went around and parked and walked in to order and I can hardly stand the smell it at a musty smell inside I could have never sat there and ate with that smell. I order five hamburgers she gave me the receipt and I walked outside stay out there for an hour while I walk back inside there is no one there when I got there but two people in there as blond waitress was over by the phones she would not even can you hold and push the button and laid the phone down, now I know why you couldn't get through the other waitress was running around like a chicken with her head cut off really doing nothing. And I stood there and stood there and I finally settle is it ready it had been 45 minutes for five hamburgers and I was looking in the back and my food was sitting up there and they were so confused they would have to pick up the ticket and look through all the stuff to see who's was whose was whose and had to try and figure it out not really I'm not putting this place down but they need to get somebody in there that knows what they're doing and not hang up on people and get rid of the smell because the food was good I will probably never go there again that's a sad thing John's place in Yucca Valley has really good food I've ate there so I don't know what the deal with this one in Twentynine Palms is but they need to get their shit together or close i'm giving them a three star because the food was good the service was just horrible and there was a musty smell in a new building read more

I wish I could give less than one star. 29 Palms location review goes as follows; Mediocre service, mediocre food. The employees don't listen to anything you say while ordering then give you attitude when they mess your order up. I've gone 3 times and I've only had one somewhat decent experience, by that I mean they didn't get our food wrong. I ordered a bacon, avocado cheeseburger and it was okay. Fries desperately needed salt and the burger wasn't seasoned. My husband got a burger as well and again, it was alright. The Ruben my mother ordered was all fat and barley edible. They never seem to have enough employees working either so drinks take awhile to get refilled. Over all experience at this establishment was okay. I won't be returning because I'm dissatisfied every time I go. There are a few other places in town where j can get a better burger for the same price. Yucca valley location; HORRIBLE. We went as a double date on Monday June 30th and this was by far the worst experience I've ever had, anywhere. The woman taking our orders was extremely rude. Rude to the point it made everyone uncomfortable. It was around 7:30 when we got there and decided to have our food outside because it was a beautiful night. Food came around 8 and it was okay. Same as the 29 Palms location. We got burgers and fries again. Needed seasoning and salt and was just okay. We ate and at no point did anyone ask if we needed anything or our drinks refilled. Finally at around 8:45 they told us they were turning off the soda machine and if we needed a refill now is the only time. At this point we were finished eating so only one person asked for a refill. We were all sitting there talking about leaving soon when the employees inside decided that the best way to tell us they were closing was by turning the lights off on us!!!! So extremely rude.
