This place is notorious for having unfriendly staff. They have all worked here for so long they really don't care about you. Especially the female manager. She is the owners daughter so she has the "head up her ass" attitude. if you have a complaint about something on your table, be prepared to be treated like second class citizens after. The food is good though, if it doesn't come cold, which 7/10 times, it does. I like the zucchini fries. John's Place has been a local staple for years. It's always been a great place, and in the middle of the day most of the time its hard to get a place to sit. But lately we've been noticing that it doesn't seem to be as busy as it use to be. Today my husband and I stopped in around noon for lunch. I ordered a double cheese burger and sweet potato fries, and he ordered a chili dog and french fries. When the waitress brought our food she basically just came by and tossed the plates on the table and turned and walked away. Husband had to go get his own ketcup for his fries, and he was not offered a knife or fork for his chili dog. He was also disappointed that there was no cheese on the chili dog. I guess thats extra? I wanted some ranch dressing for my fries, and when he went up to get his ketchup he asked for it and was told that its now .35 extra. The last time we ordered to go we had zucchini and sweet potato fries and had 3 containers. But the worst part of all was when my husband bit into his fries. The first one was cold, and the second one was still FROZEN in the middle. We've been going to John's for as long as its been open, and its sad to see a local landmark start to go down hill quality wise like this. I'm always willing to give the thought that maybe it was an off day and I'll try again, but if service is that bad and fries are that under done again I'll go to the other end of town and hit one of the franchise places. read more

Johns place is by far one of the best restraunts in town.They have very fair prices and deals.On Sunday and Wednesday they have deals on their junior burger which is actually a good size .I love their salads and sandwiches as well as their fries however, sometimes I tell them I would like them a bit crispier. The only good thing about this place was the $0.99 burgers. They weren't that great, but it was a cheap way to feed the family occasionally. They raised the price now, and I just can't see any reason to eat there. Anyone who thinks this is the best food ever should probably get out of Yucca more often. It's not freshly made either, it's crap out of bags/cans etc. that they're assembling. I wouldn't bother to say something negative if it were just another crappy diner though, the problem is that your brown greasy heart attack in a bag often comes with a side of rude appallingly bad customer service. Once we went there for dinner, figured we'd give it a try after receiving one of their printed menus they put out for a promotion. I like Greek food, and since we have none here, wanted to try the gyro plate here to satisfy a craving I was having. It was $10, which is high for that type of food elsewhere, but with no local competition that is what it is. I don't remember the food that well, it wasn't great, all I remember really is the waitress nearly putting me in tears by fighting with me over whether I could have rice for my side. Mind you, I wasn't asking for substitutions, which they make clear that they won't accommodate. Which I think sucks also, but this was even worse. See, the cool new menu they gave out listed that those entrees came with choice of rice or potato, unless you got the Mexican one, which came with rice and beans. I wanted rice with my gyros, they do go together traditionally and since I'd read it on the menu, was expecting to order, eat and enjoy without issue. I'm told no, John says no substitutions. Substitutions? But it says I can order that right on the menu. Sorry, no substitutions! But...ok, at this point I just want to go eat somewhere else, but the family is hungry. I show her how it says I can order the rice in writing on their menu. She continues to argue with me that John says people can't eat rice and gyros together, being nasty and acting like I'm just being difficult. I really can't comprehend why this is an issue, it isn't as if rice were more costly than potatoes or even costly at all! Was a half cup of rice really worth an unhappy customer? Is there a great Yucca Valley rice shortage I didn't hear about? Anyway, she finally made the great concession to allow me to order off their menu and gave me the stupid rice. At this point I had lost my appetite and their mediocre food provided little stimulation. Oh, and the dessert included with your entree? That's a cup of pudding. We haven't gone there for dinner since. We got the dollar burgers a few times before they raised the price and encountered rudeness a couple of those times. I can wait till I'm around In n Out for a burger, or make bomb burgers at home. Everything else is swimming in grease, overpriced bad cafeteria food. My original review was "4 stars" because I only had one plate of food, and the place has more of a "diner" feel than a "5-star restaurant" - not because anything was wrong. Since my previous review, I have been back a few more times (It's a couple hours away), have taken other people, and recommended it to family members who were headed to Yucca Valley. Everyone has been very happy with the food, service, portion sizes, prices, and cleanliness. I recently mentioned this place to some friends from San Diego when they said they were headed to Joshua Tree for the weekend, and they said, "Oh yeah, we always eat there!" read more

I unfortunately won't be returning to johns place. I have been there a handful of times. It's always hit or miss with the food and service. What can you say,its not fancy,its greasy,and messy.. but isn't that what you want from a burger joint! I have been going here since I was a young kid,and not much has ever changed. Love the 99 cent burgers, makes my wed a little easier being a single father with 2 teenage boys. Also the pastrami is great (little less grease would be nice though) and the country breakfast is huge and really could be split! Thanks johns also for serving thanksgiving dinners and breakfast (for free) for as long as I can remember! Great place and hope the ownership never changes! One last thing 2 of the best servers I have seen have worked here, and the busboy is great (and I think has been there at least 20 yrs) and I don't think ever takes a day off. So decided to call John's Place and have dinner tonight ordered 3 hamburger specials with zucchini thought that was pretty easy of an order. The person who took the order acted like we were taking up too much of her time on the phone she was in a hurry to get us off the phone she was not very polite at all .so I then go all the way home up on the Mesa after the lady checked it twice upon getting home and opening the box it wasn't even what I ordered didn't even make it right and then she tells me that I can come all the way back down the hill and she can make our order right. but that's all she's going to do and I asked her are you going to at least compensate me for my inconvenience? she states to me "well ma'am I already am by making you your order again" I said oh so because you're going to make it the correct way and I have to drive back down there to give it to you and come back home again then that's that ? And that's how you deal with customer service ? And she said sorry but yes . However once I get there and give her her food back she says that she can give me a $10 gift card well that's great and all but I can't eat a gift card so looks like we're not having dinner tonight thanks to John's Place.! the right customer service thing to do would have been to remake that meal and offer a $10 gift card for my inconvenience so no more John's place for me. this is like the third time they've gotten it wrong it's a waste of time having to drive down the hill to have to return or get your order fixed from them they're just going downhill... thanks but no thanks. read more

I suppose if there's nothing else around you might wax poetic about this place but the burgers and fries are pedestrian, the onion ring batter tasteless, the "decor" and staff depressingly blank-- just a Formica wasteland wih less personality than a Wendy's and less clean. If our order of 2 burgers, fries and rings had not taken 25 minutes (and the fountain drinks even longer than that!), they might have earned one more star... Nah. Never mind. 3 is generous, especially since the women's room was a mess and out of paper towels. I have been coming to John's for almost 25 years, this place is a landmark in Yucca Valley. His burgers are by far the best in town and twice a week you can grab em for a buck. I suggest calling in first because on wednesday and sundays they get pretty busy. The fries are awesome although I do have one ongoing complaint about the fries. There too much especially if your eating by yourself. My daughter and me can split an order they give you alot. All their portions are huge. Ok on to the breakfast well its the best breakfast in town im stuck on their asparagus omlette its incredible...massive amounts of asparugus and cheese. They also have an avacado omlette thats really good. Anyway this place is a class act its clean, friendly staff and economical. Oh by the way the owner does an annual thanksgiving feast breakfast and a turkey dinner every year which is just cool in my book. cant go wrong here its 4 stars all the way. read more

We had breakfast. It was crowded with local breakfast crowd...all hard surfaces, so very noisy. It was quieter on the patio right on the main highway! Hash browns were watery and flavorless. Service was sketchy; waitress never brought me cutlery...had to ask neighboring table so I could eat. John's is popular, but I really don't know why. John's has the best food in town. That the sad part. We recently gave this place another try after we stopped going there last year or so after decades of being regular patrons due to the restaurant's growing trend towards some nasty attitude, poor service and cold food (they need a heat lamp so badly!, instead of leaving a dozen plates of food to get cold on linoleum counters because they're understaffed when they get busy -- the irony is they've got the best food in town but it sadly drops from four stars to one when they let it just sit there getting cold; and it's really disheartening to sit there staring at your food getting cold from the booth where you sit, stomach grumbling, makes you want to go grab it yourself, especially after a really lon wait). We also noticed they're opening up a new location in 29 palms which is closer to us. Note to the management: pleeeeeease do us all a favor and design the new place to accommodate the workflow and add a heat lamp table so yall don't keep shooting yourselves in the foot serving up cold food. So... The good news is the staff seems a lot friendlier now and they handled the rush with good humor, the bad news is the eating experience is worse now than when we quit on John's a year or so back. We waited nearly 45 minutes for breakfast, without anything like a good explanation why, and many folks who came in after us got their food and some were already done by the time we finally got ours... The food was great (except I had steak and eggs and the steak was ice cold) (again). Bummer! Goodby again John's. We'll give your new location a try and see if it's more like John's used to be. read more

We have eaten a few times at John's and the food was pretty good. However, when we recently ate there, I ordered fried chicken. When I bit into a piece of breast meat, there was ice in it. I asked the waitress about it and she said it is frozen and just heated up. Their mashed potatoes with gravy was the worst! Grey, watery potatoes with some kind of awful lumpy gravy on top. We will never, ever eat there again! I had to wait a long period of time to get into the lady's room. One of the wait staff was in there an unbelievably long time. Can't imagine what she was doing all that time. Maybe on her cell? Who knows. All I have to say is it was a yukky experience in Yucca Valley. read more

HOW JOHN'S PLACE SCAMS YOU: (The one star is actually a zero star in this case) Beware of a scam at John's Place. When you order a 1/3 pnd burger and french fries separately, which adds up to $ 7.50 currently (5/2017), and drinking water -no soft drink- they scam you by delivering you what they call a "combo", which is $ 1,-- more for the soft drink that you did not order, but are charged regardless. The "combo" has also only half the amount of french fries, because they use only 1 plate for the burger and fries. So you pay $ 8,50 and don't get the soft drink, and also only half the fries you should get it they would deliver the fries and burger in separate plates, the way you ordered it. Not only do they overcharge you $ 1,-- but they also give you only half of the fries you paid for. I call them SCAM'S PLACE, not John's Place. How did I find out: I was there last night for dinner. I ordered a 1/3 pnd burger, and separately french fries. The waitress asked me if this was a combo order. I said clearly no and asked for water instead of a soft drink. When she delivered the order to me, it was a COMBO, but without the soft drink. I asked her why she didn't give me 2 separate plates, because now the fries were reduced to half, as the burger took half of the other half of the plate. She argued it was a COMBO and COMBO was "cheaper". Regardless the fact that I did NOT order a COMBO, I asked her: "How much is the COMBO ?" her. Turned out the COMBO was $ 8,50. I told her that for 2 separate plates, the cost was $ 7,50, and I would get a full plate of fries instead of the half the fries due to the burger taking the other half of the plate. She then got really rude and said "Okay I'll get you more fries !" and brought me more fries and threw them on my plate of fries. She had a second plate for the burger, the way it should have been in the first place. You don't get what you order unless you fight for it at that place ! While this was going on, 2 men sitting in the seats close by defended her by verbally attacking me and calling me names, without knowing what the dispute was about. The waitress smiled at them, which encouraged them to escalate their attack. She never came by to ask if I needed more water or anything. Lastly, at the entrance they have a mat, which states "welcome". It was covered with salad leaves, cracker wraps, and the filth stretched all the way to the restaurant. The next day I talked to the manager. She handed the call over to the owner, John. John interrupted me rudely whenever I wanted to discuss the matter, defending the waitress who tried to scam me. He also yelled: "We have no control over the behavior of our clients", and after nearly praising the filth on his floor, he hung up on me. Ironically, at the door, customers are warned they won't get service if they don't have shoes and shirts on, but inside, rowdies are allowed to attack a lady who refuses to be scammed by a waitress. John's Place is Scam's Place. Beware. Make sure you get what you pay for. If you like good service, you're at the wrong place. They think they can afford to loose a customer. Their rating on Yelp indicates they are going to be among losers when Yucca Valley grows and more restaurants open. I am never going back to SCAM'S PLACE and I am spreading the word...:) read more

I used to visit Johns often up until my last experience. As I sat at my table waiting for my food, an older man walked in the door. It was lunch hour so the line was pretty long. The elderly man walked up to the counter and told the girl at the register that he was disabled and asked if he could sit down and wait for his turn to take his order. The woman behind the counter said no you need to stand in line. After seeing that, I left and won't be returning for the horrible service I experienced. read more
