I love this place! The food is always good, always consistant and the staff is always friendly. This is a very basic diner-like environment. You order at the counter and the prepared for is brought to your table. It's perfect for a quick breakfast or lunch or low key dinner. The portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. While in town we just wanted a simple easy dinner and said hey lets grab some burgers and eat them at our rental . I have been here before and honestly could not remember if it was good or bad. For two burger combos and one hamburger by itself, the total came out $72 YIKES !! I did sub zucchini for fries which is an $8.50 up charge . But you make matters worse when I got home one of my burgers was not made the way that I requested it. They forgot the bacon and cheese. I called them and I don't like when they say would you like to come back and grab the right thing because no I'm already home. You guys messed up and I don't wanna be the one that has to drive all the way back just to grab a burger while my other family members eat. Honestly, the burgers were tasteless. No seasoning at all and the fries were undercooked. I did not take any pictures because after I realized my order was wrong. I just wanted to eat and be done with that. Casual dinner tonight at John's restaurant Palm Springs with four friends. For two of us it was our first time there but the other three are John's veterans and fans. On the recommendation of another friend, three of the four of us came to partake of their Wednesday special - the oven roasted chicken ($19.50), served with mixed veggies, a roll and a choice of sides - two of us selected the mashed potatoes but one of the others had the zucchini sticks - which he really liked - and another had the french fries. Drinks are $3.49 with free refills - I had a raspberry ice tea, someone else had lemonade and another had diet cola. Our other dinner companion had a pastrami sandwich which he seemed very pleased with. This is not a traditional table service restaurant. You order at the counter from a posted menu - with the daily specials on a blackboard to the side. You're handed a tray with your drinks, silverware and a number on a stand to display on your table. Booth seating was comfortable. When your order is ready, a server brings it over based on your displayed number. Refills on the drinks came frequently and quickly. The roasted chicken consisted of a breast, a leg and a wing which begs the question as to what they do with the thigh. If I remember correctly, the young man who took our orders had said that the roasted chicken consisted of a half chicken - which was not the case. Don't get me wrong - the portion served was large enough and very filling. The chicken was tasty but could have been hotter. The mixed veggies consisted of some sliced zucchini, three pieces of broccoli and a smattering of sliced carrots (see attached photo). John's is a super casual restaurant with a diner type fare menu. The young staff was very friendly. Prices are reasonable by Palm Springs standards. The food was good for what it was. I would go back and try one of their burgers on the recommendation of another friend or perhaps that pastrami sandwich that the friend who had it liked so much. read more

Let's talk about John's. Imagine this you're living in Palm Springs or staying in your hotel and suddenly the power goes out. You wait for it to come back on but hours later you realize it's going to be sometime before you can turn on the light or your electric stove. What do you do? I'll tell you what I did. I jumped in the car and drove around the corner to John's, which miraculously was not affected by the power outage caused from the recent rains. I haven't been to John's in some time for breakfast, but I remember it being pretty good and not necessarily breaking the bank like some of the more trendy downtown spots. Don't sleep on the biscuits and gravy, which I was told were bomb. I myself set upon a French toast order with bacon. Overall, we noticed that the food tended to be lighter on the salt which I personally appreciated since most places over salt for my personal taste. However, they provide a salt packet and you can always season extra. The bacon was crisp and not floppy or thin, and the eggs were beautifully cooked. Service was wonderful and got me out the door quickly with mine to go order. If you happen to go and take a look at their specials board! There were a few days that looked particularly yummy for me personally so I may have to go back on another day. Final notes I do love their fried zucchini with ranch. John's Restaurant has a 1960's feel to it like I saw depicted in American Grafitti.  I loved the early Palm Springs vibe with Palm trees in front.  I found out John's opened in 1985.   I ordered fried chicken with fried zucchini at the counter.  Fried chicken had crispy skin with tender and juicy chicken underneath.  I enjoyed the fried chicken flavor.  Zucchini was cut like french fries.  The seasoned batter was crunchy.  Good mix of flavors from the batter and the zucchini.  Pretty good dish. 2nd visit I ordered the eggs and sausage with a side of bacon.  Home style potatoes had a crispy outer layer and lots of potato flavor.  Eggs were scrambled and full of egg flavor.  Bacon was crispy and I liked the salty flavor.  Sausage was my favorite part of the meal and had a tasty savory flavor.  Toasted bread had a nice crunch and mild flavor. Soda water was complimentary and refreshing. Service was friendly and efficient.  There are daily specials that sound great.  I'll have to time my next visit for when that ribeye steak is available. read more

Staff is helpful and accommodating to special requests on food. The tip option is rather expensive considering you walk up to order, take your own tray of drinks and cutlery to the table. Craving for some good ol' diner food, we came here as we didn't want to go to Elmer's again. For brunch we got the Breakfast melt on sourdough and Country Fried Steak & Eggs. Very extensive menu where you order at the counter, pay, get a number and sit yourself. Breakfast melt is a tasty sandwich, loaded with real ham (not the overly processed one), thick bacon, eggs, American cheese and tomato with 1000 island dressing. This calorie bomb is hearty and it's best to share it. I also prefer the hash brown over the home fries (cubed potatoes). Overall good. The country fried steak was definitely overwhelming. The ultra thick gravy overpowered everything under it. It was enjoyable for the first few bites but then it was hard to finish. Flavor was there, and the hash browns and over easy eggs perfectly cooked. The rye toast was a miss, hard and dry. Should've gone with the sourdough instead. Overall 3.5/5 for me. It is an order of hearty food with a side of coma. I like the order at counter process. Good service and available take out boxes you grab yourself without having to wait for anyone. read more

The zucchinis are becoming less and less appealing. Soggy and flavorless lately. Got a $20 salmon Caesar salad, that if I had seen it, I wouldn't have paid 10 bucks for, they assured us the dressing was in the bag, got back to work, And it wasn't. When we went back to get some dressing, we ask for extra, and he said he'd have to charge us. First of all, paying 20 bucks for a salad, What's wrong with extra dressing? And second of all, if you knew we had to make a special trip back, why wouldn't you just throw it in? Very tacky. read more

This was my go to lunch place for many years, back when I lived and worked in Palm Springs. Gosh, I think it's been over 30 years ago. So imagine my excitement (upon visiting the area) when I noticed it was still here! We visited twice and it was just as wonderful as I remembered. The chicken still has that distinctive charbroiled flavor. And the fried zucchini is still outstanding. I also tried a breakfast sandwich that was excellent. Even though they are super busy and it's seat yourself service, they manage to keep everything very clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I'll be back for sure. We stopped off here for a quick lunch bite. They had a bunch of breakfast, burgers and sandwich stuff. Think diner food. The food was pretty good. We ordered a tri-tip sandwich, along with a ham and turkey club sandwich with avocado. We later found out the avocado price was a steep add-on. We were half way eating and noticed a piece of hair in our fries. Short and curly. And that was our lunch... The restaurant was fine. Food tasted fine. And what's on the wall does not even begin to describe what's on the menu. I would never order a salad again. I would try the other meals and think some yelper should assemble a "sekrit order list." This was suggested as a place for me based on my love of Meester Zeebra. You simply cannot compare the two. Meester Zeebra is excellent. John's was just ok. Service is weird. They give you a number, but there is no clear communication that the food comes to you (only if you dine in. If you dine out; you have to collect your order.) It's just confusing. If you happen to be at the Notth end of Palm Canyon, Rick is much better than John's. read more

We loved this place, and returned recently after a 13-year absence since moving away from the desert. The menu is huge, breakfast to lunch to dinner, open from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The place is buzzing with conversation and energy, the staff is quick to assist if one is overwhelmed by the choices or the system, which involves ordering at the counter that fronts the kitchen, grabbing a numbered post and then finding a seat. Takeout for leftovers is equally self serve, with plenty of containers in an obvious place. Th3 plates are bountiful and tasty. As for parking, it has a medium size lot, but there's usually a spot to find on the street. We will be back whenever we are in town. read more

It was way too windy at 849 (as we were sitting outside) and service was extremely slow, so we decided to go elsewhere for lunch. As we were walking back to our cars we came across this place and decided to give it a try. It's like a 60's type diner on the inside. They have a pretty extensive menu. With a Mexican twist. They also have burgers and other types od food here. They have a lot to offer here. I decided (trying to be healthy) to go with their Santa Fe chicken salad. They give you a food trey after you order at the counter, which is useless cuz they deliver your food separately (makes no sense); it just ends up cluttering the table. You can search yourself anywhere available after ordering your food up front. Our food came out quickly. Very colorful and vibrant. Lots of ingredients in the salad. Salad dressing was slightly bland. And the chicken was dry. Overall it was good. Healthy. My friend ordered the BBQ salad, and that sauce tasted a lot better. read more

In hindsight, I maybe didn't order the right food here. It was hot and I was craving a salad so I went against my usual diner food order and got a chef salad. It was okay but I've had better salads. Since I don't eat pork, I asked for no ham and double turkey. The salad also comes with hard boiled egg, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers and croutons. It's basically my ideal salad combo and yet it felt like something was missing. Because I couldn't be purely healthy with just a salad, I also got an order of fries. They, too, were just okay. I forced myself to try a new breakfast place rather than one of my 5 PS favorites. Less PS, more all American diner, with great views and outdoor seating, you order at the counter and then choose a booth or table. Open every except Monday from 8 am to 9 pm. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, each posted on a separate menu board over the grill. My cheese omelet appeared at my table, thanks to my number, flagging the friendly server to my location. All condiments and jams are already at your table. My omelet, and most importantly, the hashbrowns, were perfectly prepared and served hot. The sourdough bread toast was okay. I'm thinking John's is a bit of an anomaly? It feels like a remnant of old Palm Springs from when it was a sleepier, more mellow desert town, sans the glitz of downtown. The exterior exudes that vintage vibe, down to the weird chimney element on the wide roof and big windows facing Palm Canyon. Inside it feels like a diner but with tall, wood ceilings, with a row of 70's colored booths (you know; burnt orange, maroon, pea green, etc) ringing the perimeter at the windows and some basic tables to fill in the interior space. Step up to the counter, place your order, find your own table, and they bring your food out to you. There isn't a wait staff per se, but they deliver the meal to your table and bus it after, so it's different from a diner in that sense, even though it feels like one. The menu too, leans Mex-American, with burritos, tacos and the like, but there are lots of burgers gyros and sandwich deals here too. But guess what? The salads are something else. At least the one I had, (the Salmon Salad) which was just damn huge, with a big ol slab of fish on top, lots of eggs, tons of veggies and a big cup of dressing on the side. It was amazingly good, fresh food and I couldn't even finish the thing, so I had to box it up to go. Not only that, but I thought the price was more than reasonable; I'm sure it'd be 30% more at a downtown joint. Old school, low key, and very satisfying, though the atmosphere is a bit sleepy. Got a Cobb salad expecting a typical Cobb salad. Instead I was greeted by a pungent over boiled egg smell mixed with the wilted lettuce immediately put me off. Upon further inspection, it's just STACKED sliced lunch meat with some Mexican triple cheese blend on top of it. If I were the cook I would be embarrassed and ashamed that this was put out for a customer.
