Very nice customer service. It was not too busy for a Thursday night, during the night market. That might have only been due to so many food vendors out and the restaurant being at the far end of town. A little bummed chips and salsa weren't complementary, but I think a lot of restaurants are moving in that direction so I understand with costs going up. The Food was delicious!! We ended up trying this restaurant only because the first two places we went to were packed. They had a 4.5 rating, so we gave them a shot -- but honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. The cleanliness was the first issue. It was noticeable right away and set the tone for the rest of the experience. Then came the food quality, which was disappointing for the price point. On top of that, they automatically added a 20% tip without telling us in advance. We had people sharing dishes, and they still $8 extra charged it without any explanation. They didn't bring extra plates or anything to justify it. I've never been to a place that felt this poor in service yet so expensive at the same time. Salty, subpar service, and unexpectedly charged for chips and salsa. Not sure if we went on an off day. It was our first time and we came around 1pm on a Monday. No wait and we were seated right away. The waitress asked if we wanted chips and salsa as we were seated, before being given any menus, and we said yes. The chips and salsa came with the menus and water then we started looking over the menu. First impressions: 1. Water was given in a glass shareable bottle with two plastic cups as small as shot cups. Cheap looking. 2. I wasn't paying attention much to people's attitudes, but my partner said it seemed like the waitress didn't want to be there. 3. Prices were pretty steep but the restaurant had really good reviews, so we still gave it a shot. We ordered a wet burrito and the surf and turf chimichanga. When the food came, the burrito was not wet and the chimichanga was covered with red sauce. When we stated that the burrito was ordered as wet, they took both plates back. Then they gave it back to us. The chimichangas had red sauce on top and I called a waitress to ask about the green sauce since the menu said it was topped with red and green sauce. She said no, it isn't. And I said, the menu said it is. She said no, the menu said red sauce. And I read the menu from my phone verbatim, that it's covered in red and green sauce. She grabbed a menu and read it, and then realized I was right. She then brought the green enchilada sauce. We then noticed that there was only one knife between the two of our plates. But no one checked on us after. So we just shared a knife, no big deal. Just inconvenient. But again, no one checked on us after the food came. There were two waitresses and 5 tables of groups of 2-6 people. The food: SO SALTY. The rice, beans, chimichanga, and burrito were all salty. The beans were not edible. Rice was barely edible. And I had 4 bites of the chimichanga but each bite I had to add the side salad to it to make it less salty. My partner said at first the burrito wasn't salty, but about 1/4 in he said it was also really salty and couldn't keep eating. Finally, after we stopped eating and sat for a few minutes, someone finally checked in. We just asked for boxes and the check. The chips and salsa were NOT complimentary. They weren't expensive. BUT it's the principle. Don't OFFER chips and salsa as we get seated, before we get a chance to see the menu, as if they were free. It was so weird. For the price, this was absolutely NOT worth it. Again, not sure if we came in on an off day. But for almost $80 two people, I would expect water to not be in a plastic shot cup, better service, and edible food. read more

Sigh, every time I come to Palm Springs I expect inflated reviews and this place is no different. Had high hopes in downtown Palm Springs as there was a taco spot in every corner, and La Bonita's has a 4.5 star average with thousands of reviews. Sadly... everything was disappointing. Our tortillas were so soggy that it couldn't even hold the filling and I ended up eating the remnants of my tacos with a fork. The filling wasn't good either, and nothing here tasted authentic. My kids tried their tacos made with flaming hot Cheetos and that was... different. The taco shell is made out of a blend of the hot Cheetos with your usual taco filling. It's ok the first couple bites, but gets old fast. Was greasy and heavy. I've tried this place a couple times before but it's been quite some time. Met our friends for lunch, we sat outside. The service was excellent. Server was very attentive and informative. Have some ice cold beers and chavelas. I've had the cheese shell tacos before from which I remember they were really good. This time we had the fajita trio so flavorful so tender everything was cooked to perfection, and it was very filling! My friend had the chimichanga which she said was also delicious. At the Palm Springs Film Festival and needed a fairly quick dinner between movies. La Bonita's is pretty close (about a 5 minute drive). We got lucky and got a spot right in front. The restaurant is fairly small (I think there are probably less than 10 tables inside with a few more outside). Soon after we sat down, Ozzy came by with menus and glasses of water. A friend wanted tacos and I saw the great reviews so we stopped in. Definitely a casual and divey kind of atmosphere but the service was friendly and they got our order quickly. They have a nice menu selection but I opted for beef cheese shell tacos as I thought the cheese shell was unique. The cheese shell is exactly that- grilled/baked (?) cheese formed into a crunchy shell with all the regular toppings inside. As a result, it was super cheesy! We spent a couple of days in Palm Springs for my birthday, and decided to have brunch at La Bonita's, a small Mexican café my husband picked. He said, "It doesn't look fancy, but it something I imagine to see in Mexico," and I agreed. He ordered a Coke, and I tried a watermelon margarita for the first time. It was absolutely amazing! So refreshing, especially in the Palm Springs heat. For food, I got their famous fish tacos, and my husband ordered a burrito. Honestly, the margarita was the highlight for me. The food was fine, I liked that the tacos came with refried beans and rice, which were tasty, but they didn't bring us any of the sauces we usually enjoy, like the green or spicy ones. You had to ask for them, which felt a little awkward. My husband didn't really enjoy his burrito either. We're a bit spoiled because our favorite burrito place back home, Taqueria Mi Durango in San Bruno, makes incredible ones, so this one just didn't compare. We were a little disappointed, but still, it was part of the experience. And honestly, discovering the watermelon margarita made it all worth it. I didn't even know that existed before! It has been a while since I have visited this little hole in the wall Mexican joint here in Palm Springs. Since our last visit, the dining room has doubled as they have taken over the space next door so there is a ton of indoor seating as well as a small patio outside. Our server, I believe her name was Virginia was over the top amazing and super attentive to all of our needs, offering refills on drinks and checking in with us often. It was a Thursday night and there were only a few other tables since it was on the later end of the evening. We ordered chips and salsa which arrived promptly. Personally, this salsa was extremely salty for my taste, but no complain complaints from my partner. I ordered the Carne Asada plate while my partner ordered the cheese enchiladas with red sauce. He ranted and raved about how the cheese was perfect and the enchilada sauce was 10 out of 10 delicious. My plate arrived looking beautiful however for my personal taste it was a bit of a mess, and I would probably not order it again. The rice seems strange to me almost too wet and lacking in something. Little to know tomato and it appeared to have some sort of dried seasoning in it? I guess I would compare more to an instant box of rice versus what I would expect from a restaurant. The meat was also a disappointment as it felt like just leftover taco filling with a ton of lime to cover up any faults. Favorite part about my plate ended up being the cilantro cream dressing on the cabbage which helped to balance out the rest of the plate. I think if I ever stop by this joint again, I will stick to Tacos. But still not a bad place if you're in need of a late night bite and would rather avoid fast food. read more

The food and the vibe here was amazing! I like that it's open late and everything is made to order. I had some amazing mahi mahi tacos! The fish was seasoned well and firm but not tough. The sides-rice and beans were delicious! Rice was fluffy and the beans were fantastic could have eaten them by themselves. Which one was more hotter. The next thing I know he bring out to small sauce bowls so I could try them and pick which one I liked. I thought that was so sweet of him! We ordered: 1 Queso Taco plate, 1 Macho Quesadillas asada plate, 1 enchiladas plate, 1 Macho Quesadilla chicken. Which all of the plates came with beans, rices and a small salad and guacamole. The portions of the food here are big as well as their price points are spot on! All the food was delicious!! LaLo was a great server always made sure we had everything we needed! We ordered on the phone, my sister told me the lady who took her order on the phone sounded rude and annoyed and started screaming "speak up, I can't hear you!!" The food itself tasted pretty good. The chips and salsa was decent, I liked the salsa. I ordered a house ice tea and it was the right kind lol was refreshing and came in a chilled glass. My husband drank water which is presented in a small plastic cup like the kind for mouth wash. The silverware was very light and seemed like the came from the dollar store years ago. As well as the "steak knife" that that was was light as a feather and obviously worn out. The tables have wood benches and aren't comfortable, extra bad if you are wearing a skirt like I was. The food was not traditional Mexican food at all. Do not go. For the price point, it was robbery. The quality of the ingredients were poor. Immediately when I walked in I noticed that the restaurant had a "grimey" feel and it smelled of fabuloso floor cleaner. There was only one cook, I nearly fell on these rubber mats that led towards the bathroom, and there was Reggae music played instead of Mexican music. We didn't order any drinks and simply had water. We were given a glass bottle of cold water and a stack of flimsy, small plastic cups (6 oz. or so) to drink our water. Oh and the forks!! The forks were in little paper bags. I'm torn to determine if that was a good or bad thing. I ordered nachos to be "safe" and they were so disappointing. The chicken was cooked and not grilled, and didn't look like chicken--mostly cold.
