Just stopped in because I needed a state inspection for our van and wanted to get the skinny on how they handled inspections. I found out that they ONLY do appointments! I made one for a few days from then; after I left, the inspector came out and said that he was through for the day and wondered whether I wanted to do it now. I said "of course." He inspected my van and I was on my way 15 minutes later! Love, love, love this place!!! read more

Went to this Auto Service once before and ended up having good service. Just called literally 5 minutes ago and was treated rudely over the phone. I asked if I could schedule an oil change and he said "No, we only do them in the morning." Um...ok. So that doesn't work for me b/c I work full-time as well, you know? So he didn't suggest anything else and just was silent, Awkward!!! I said I guess I will go to Jiffy Lube and he said, "OK". Basically the moral of story, he obviously didn't want my business and I will never go there again. Not to be pessimistic minded or anything, but Portsmouth, VA, is really really horrible at providing good customer service. I haven't found a good business around here yet!!!! So all of you wanting to go to John's I would think twice since he doesn't need anyone's business! Good luck! read more

Came in town to visit from Richmond realized on the drive down that my inspection had expired. I'm like awww man it's no way I'm going to be able to get my car inspected. So I looked on yelp seen that johns was close to my location, so I decided to give them a call. A woman answered the phone was very professional set my appointment for 3:30 that day. Around 2:30 she called me back to confirm my appointment I assured her I would be there. So I got to the shop about 3:15 pulled around to the side gate marked inspections. Went inside the shop gave her my keys and my last name said they would see me shortly, I watched Ellen and Spike Lee was the guest talking about his new movie BLackkklansmen which is a great movie. In 15 minuets they had me out of there on my way I strongly recommend this place. read more

Went to John's Auto Service based on the positive Yelp reviews. I needed to get my car inspected....nothing like waiting until the last minute. When I arrive I walked to the service desk to ask about getting my state inspection. The gentleman behind the desk was nice enough, told me to pull my car around back of the shop. There is a lane marked "State Inspection". I pulled my car around back, no one was around, no one came out etc. I walk back around to the service desk and spoke with the same gentleman, he said the just left and would be back...not really sure what that meant. I waited by my car for 10-15 minutes. Still no one showed up, or came outside. I grew tired of waiting and lack of service that had been praised upon on this repair shop. I left after calling another repair to get my car inspection completed. read more

I came in for a state inspection. I arrived about 30 min prior to opening to ensure I would be first. I was in and out in 20 minutes. The shop is clean. The manager is alert and able to form coherent sentences. Which is more than I can say for other shops in the area. I will be frequenting this shop for future auto shop needs. read more

Went to John's this morning (Friday of Memorial Weekend) pulled up to the gate for an inspection about 30 minutes before they opened. When they opened, a Technician came out and hung a sign noting no inspections today as their Inspector was off. He noted they were very busy going into the Holiday Weekend (closed Monday). Without asking how long I was there (or waiting for me to ask) he immediately advised he would inspect my vehicle. Not many places would do this. Everyone was extremely friendly and professional. A patron inside advised this was the most honest shop he ever used. On a side note, my step son went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and he also raved about the great service. Being new to the area, I was concerned about finding a reputable auto shop to help me prolong the life of my aging car. A family friend suggested John's Auto Service, as it was the shop that he took his family cars to for service. I can't say enough good things about John's. I have taken my car there for a handful of services, everything from the simple (car inspection, oil change, etc), to the more complicated (replacing a broken timing belt, replacing engine mounts) and with each, I've gotten top notch service. The receptionist is friendly and listens to my best attempt to explain what is wrong with my car (think people calling into Click n'Clack trying to describe noises their car is making). The mechanics are friendly as well, repeating themselves numerous times to me on the phone so I can write down what they are saying to google it or ask my dad about it later! They are good about being on time and getting your car back to you when they say they will, and they are very fair, I think, in their pricing- I would recommend them to anybody who wants a reputable place to take their car to. read more
