Little did we expect we received low scale quality service and the food wasn't appeasing for the prices offered. Initially we waited about 8-10 minutes before we asked someone to help us. Our server Mark M. was able to take our drink and food order and apologized for the wait since there was a shift change. We ordered the Scallop Poke as an appetizer along with the Pork and Shrimp Dumplings. We felt the Scallop Poke was incredibly disappointing. The portion size was for less than one person and seemed like less than one scallop and charged $18.00. We enjoyed the Dumplings and came with 5 pieces. We were a table of 4 and each had a roll of our own. We ordered 2 Rainbow rolls, Angry Crab Roll and an Iku Iku Rolls. We enjoyed the Rainbow Rolls and Iku Iku Roll and weren't very excited for the Angry Crab Roll. The prices were average for sushi. One individual in our group is intolerant to cucumber and requested no cucumber in her Rainbow Roll. There was miscommunication and the waiter continued to misunderstand the issue and at first did not resolve the issue. In the end the waiter packed a sushi roll to go. After requesting for our checks split and being very clear since there's was miscommunication previously our waiter still did not split the two appetizers equally on the 2 checks as requested. Tried this place for first time, and it was packed for Friday evening. It has sushi bar in the middle and bar is located on the left. We were seated promptly once we arrived. We ordered 2 pieces each of Unagi, Ebi and Hamachi. We added on Southside roll, Shoyu Ramen, Rock Shrimp Fried rice, Short ribs and Tofu buns. Sushi rolls are first to arrive to the table followed by fried rice and ramen. Tofu buns took 20 minutes and short ribs took over 45 minutes to arrive. For the taste wise, the short ribs sadly didn't have flavor aside from smokey. Tofu buns were fried tofu put in Gua Bao with some pickled carrots. Ramen is okay but a bit heavy on salty side. Someone at my table paid $18 for a skinny margarita. I got a shishito margarita and it was okay. They only have a cold sake selection- nothing hot. Our server took a really long time to come over after initially bringing us waters. It was a good 15 minutes before we ordered cocktails. We tried to order from another staff member but he informed us that he wasn't allowed to put in orders. Besides that the waiter seemed very in the weeds, he was not attentive and would leave our table while we were mid sentence in making a request. Should have spoken faster, I guess. Food was excellent! I really enjoyed the mushroom dish, the brussel sprouts, and the chicken fried rice. We went to Joi last weekend to celebrate me getting a new job. We sat at the bar as the only open seating was outside and it was a bit toasty. The bartender was great, super attentive, always refilled our beverages and checked to make sure we were still doing good. We ordered the lobster tacos and spicy edamame to start-amazing! We decided on going here for dinner when we saw that they had half off rolls and half off sake bottles for national sushi day (6/18). We started with the spicy edamame, which didn't taste spicy at all. We tried most of the sushi rolls that are part of the special offer and I'd say the Iku Iku and the Joi signature rolls were my favorites. The rolls were about 8 pieces per rolls and generously topped. I like the crispy shrimp tempura inside the Iku Iku roll. The Joi signature roll has the extra spice of the spicy tuna and the pepper on top. I think the regular menu pricing for these rolls are fairly pricier than other sushi places nearby. There are plenty of other Japanese dishes on the menu. They have happy hour specials M-F 3-6 at the bar or patio only with various bites and cocktails. 4 stars for the food and 3 stars for service. Even though we had reservations for 3 with standard indoor seating, we were placed at a table on the patio. Our server forgot about our edamame order completely. It probably took at least 40 minutes to get our rolls. It could have been due to the fact that they were busier than usual for national sushi day. read more

Okay so I was really debating to give this place 3 stars. But I just decided to leave it at 4. I will say the seafood was great. We ordered the Toro, amaebi, negitoro, and a few other things on the side. First of all I am so happy to find a place that makes negitoro and serves actual amaebi. My 2 complaints are: the sushi rice... it literally tasted like it came out of the rice cooker and didn't get seasoned in the process. That is an important part of the sushi/maki. Hopefully I just went on a bad day but if not that needs to be fixed. Second the sushi rice... all of the rolls I got had 20% filling and 80% rice. I special ordered a kappa maki and you can just see how much rice was in it. I had the same problem with my negitoro. Which is disappointing since it is a $14 roll. At last, JOI Asian Bistro has opened at The Domain Northside! Definitely worth the wait! Every bite, every sip, was fantastic! We started the evening with the miso soup, delicious and served piping hot. We then selected quite a few of the nigiri-style sushi selections, alternating with several of the sushi rolls. Everything was great, so it's hard to say that any piece of sushi or any specific roll was the best. That said, the Chu-toro (fatty tuna), Unagi (freshwater eel), and Uni (sea urchin)(from California) were standouts. We also had the Aji (Japanese horse mackerel)(pictured below) that was prepared from a whole fish, cut and served as sashimi, with the fish skeleton then deep-fried. Amazing ... a "must have" on the menu. The JOI Signature roll was "off the chart" crazy good, and the one (cannot remember the name) with the fried shrimp hanging out of the end was terrific.
