Situated in the quaint neighbourhood of the Upper East Side, JoJo can be found in a townhouse rather inconspicuously. However, it is by no means tucked away as any passerby is likely to stop and look at their patio and outdoor setup - just in time as spring blooms. Their dinner menu consists of a variety of dishes that reflected the setting and seasons: light, airy, and full of life. For 3, we ordered the following: warm shrimp salad, spicy yellowfin tuna tartara lettuce cups, avocado, shiso, steamed black sea bass with spring peas, ginger scallion and lime, charred duck breast with parsnip, rhubarb, morels and mustard suace, and roasted asparagus with mint. The spicy yellowfin tuna is a rather bite sized lettuce wrap, and is a very light course to start your appetite with. Next came the steamed black bass - steamed to perfection and mixed with the spring peas resembled closely a Chinese dish that really hit the spot for us. Though steamed without the extra sauces and everything else, the sea bass soaked up all the flavour from the ginger scallion and spring peas. A personal favourite was the charred duck breast (medium well). I highly recommend dabbing it in the mustard sauce and grabbing all the sides. The wonderful mix of different textures simply dissolves in your mouth. With asparagus in season now, we just had to go for it as a side. At the end, the famous carrot cake to top off the night! Overall, a great spot for a myriad of occasions - that's why versatile I felt JoJo was, especially if you are looking for someplace with no frills and well thought out dishes, JoJo is your answer. read more

My only drawback was the informal service quality and the noise level. We sat downstairs and it was loud. Next time will look for a table upstairs. I had good reason to have high expectations of a Jean-Georges establishment. I've eaten at Nougatine... and loved it. Superior quality food preparation. I also ate at ABC Kitchen, and while much more casual, I liked that, too. And now, while I can add JoJo to the list of his restaurants that I've dined at, I am not able to give it a high rating. I truly expected them to pull off a successful Christmas dinner with the finesse and execution that one would expect from an UES establishment... on Christmas... with food by Jean-Georges, no less. They didn't have ANY problems charging a high price for a Christmas meal. Okay, I get that... but I don't understand why they didn't prepare their food with the same skill and care as if every meal should have been fit for a king... or a queen... and it was Christmas, for gosh sakes !! Something special should have happened. Instead, the very first glimpse of food was a plate with 2 very simple, ordinary slices of wheat bread, and yes, it looked as if it was taken from a loaf out of any grocery store. I looked at the bread and then my husband, and I shook my head. That did NOT work for me, and while I shouldn't have had any expectations of what would be, I DID, and that ruined it for me. Sliced wheat bread ...for dinner... at $108 per person... by Jean-Georges... on Christmas? No, no, no !! To make matters worse, they brought out olive oil for dipping... on wheat bread? I'm sorry, this was just not my idea of fine dining. The bread just sat there... and so did I, PISSED OFF. The meal was prix fixe, and the menu was set a good month or two prior to descending upon this restaurant. I was pleased with what I read in advance, and I suppose my error was in assuming that like MOST 3-course prix fixe menus, what there is missing in courses, they make up for with bread... and variations of it. Yet, the appetizers and entrees offered, even the dessert, all seemed quite enticing. So, for the appetizer, I ordered the Spicy Yellowfin Tuna Tartare Lettuce Cups, which also had avocado and shiso leaves. Honestly, I don't even remember seeing any shiso leaves, so I'm not sure I ever got to taste any. The lettuce cup was butter lettuce, so it wasn't that. I guess it was an "okay" dish. It wasn't great; it wasn't bad. It was very mildly flavored, definitely NOT spicy as it was titled. There was some kind of crunchy white shavings, maybe daikon radish (not sure), which made for an interesting blend of soft and crunchy textures (I like that), but the flavors just sort of fell flat for me. My husband ordered the Warm Seafood Salad, which had avocado and a citrus-shallot dressing. The seafood was comprised of scallops, calamari, and I think mussels and shrimp. When I asked how it was, he said, "it's okay." That's not the right answer. I didn't even ask why. He was disappointed, and that's all that mattered. For our entrees, we both got Crispy Skin Organic Chicken, which came with lemon and olive oil potatoes, fried onions and potato skins. The chicken was very moist and had good flavor throughout. The potatoes, well, I don't know about them having lemon and olive oil because I didn't taste anything resembling that. I ended up just eating the chicken. The rest, I left it. For dessert, I ordered the buche de noel because it's French, it's Christmas, and it's Jean-Georges. It was a pretty plate, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I took 2 bites, and that was it for me. It was a bit too "she-she-foo-foo" (say it fast) as a friend of mine always says when something is more sophisticated than he is used to. This was for me, too, and I just wanted a good, old-fashioned buche de noel like I see on the Food Network channel. This was not it. My husband ordered the citrus pavlova with blood orange sorbet. I was secretly hoping he'd order the gingerbread bundt cake with cranberry sorbet, but I learned that he doesn't like gingerbread ! Who'd have thought? Anyway, he said he liked his dessert, but I didn't want to try anything else for the evening. It was just a big letdown, starting with that stupid bread... that I am STILL annoyed about. By the way, I have since learned from another Yelper who also dined here on Christmas, that he asked about the bread because he, too, came a long distance, spent a heck of lot of money to eat here (as did we), and he couldn't believe the bread. So, it WAS a store bought loaf, and they alleged that they had run out of "their" bread. I'm highly suspicious about that because (A) we ate there early (for us.... okay, so maybe not for a Christmas meal), and (B) I've seen other Yelpers' pictures of the wheat bread, and it wasn't just on Christmas..... so what's THAT about? I think that IS their bread. At a $308 final bill for us, this meal should have been a LOT better than it was. Can't win 'em all.... but when the price tag is this high, yes, it hurts. read more

The short: food, service and ambiance were all perfection. The longer: we came for a birthday dinner on a weekday evening. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and we had a nice, quiet booth upstairs. We started with chickpea fries and a salad. Both were perfect. A friend and I shared the chicken and the salmon. The salmon is perfectly cooked and crusted with mushrooms - something I haven't seen before. The chicken was moist and flavorful. My husband and I tried JoJo out on a whim for Sunday brunch. I've always been a huge fan of Jean George's restaurants, especially ABC Kitchen, so I wasn't surprised when this one was just as amazing. We were able to get same day reservations for two. When you walk in, it's a very cozy but light atmosphere- definitely was a townhome at some point prior to being a restaurant. The staff is on point and very friendly. We ordered the tuna tartare lettuce cups, the burger with fries, a veggie frittata, and the carrot cake. The tuna tartare lettuce cups came in a set of 3. My husband and l agree that we could have lived on these and never gotten bored of them. They have a small amount of spice (not overpowering or too much) and are perfectly light. If I could, I would have eaten 4 more plates of them. The burger was perfectly cooked and the crispy onions on top were a really nice crunch. This is what I would order if you want a more filling dish. My frittata was filling but not overwhelmingly so, and it came with a side salad that had possibly the best dressing I've ever had. This is what I would order if you want a filling meal that you won't feel uncomfortable or bloated after. Now for the carrot cake-- YOU NEED TO TRY THIS. It might be the best slice I've ever had. Wow I've probably only been to a few of the dozens of Jean-Gorges restaurants, but I already know that JoJo is one of the best. It feels like a cozy, UES town house. The staff and service are great, and the food and cocktails will kill you. I've always wanted to die in a town house in the Upper East Side, and if this is as close as I'll get, then I'd be honored. Get that salad with the egg. Ask about the steak thing and have a fish. Get a cocktail or 5. Sit at the bar. Come for dinner and get lobsters for the table. Eat all of the bread. Haven't dined at Jojo for years and I was excited to go back. I think my expectations were too high. The food was very average and for the price it did not "wow" me. Crispy Chicken was delicious but for the price I think the portion could be more. The only dish that really was worth coming was the dessert. The chocolate volcano dessert with vanilla ice cream was a nice combo. Service was really not great. My plate came with curly hair attached- which it happens but in addition to that all the servers I interacted with were emotionless. Doesn't even respond when I said "Thank you". It was explained to us that they are short staffed in the kitchen. Almost every table in the dining room downstairs and the outside space were taken. We didn't go upstairs but can only think it was packed as well The warm seafood salad was very good. The spicy yellowfin tuna tartare lettuce cups was tasteless. That was disappointing. A young eager man asked us if the food was to our liking....before we had a chance to taste our food. The roasted salmon was cooked perfectly. The corn and scallions in a fragrant lime corn broth was a fail. We asked for lemon to give the dish some flavor. We skipped dessert. We overheard the staff asking the women next to us to leave (time limit?) even though there were 3 empty tables and no one taking those tables for at least 45 minutes. The women never left. This spot is super cute and a great date spot. The food is amazing and drinks are great. If you can choose, I suggest dining upstairs. It is more intimate and quieter than the main floor. Solo diner experience. Went for dinner this Saturday evening around 730pm. They were booked and offered me a spot at the bar which I accepted. I ordered the Shrimp Salad and Sweet Pea Soup. Both were delicious, but if you get the soup ask for extra crisps in it. Staff were kind and the ambience is calm and beautiful. But yes, the bar is small. There's 4 seats but I only see it comfortably fitting 3. I had the bar to myself with the exception of a few patrons who sat on a stool while waiting for their table. I love the clean, modern Scandinavian aesthetic. I love the food. The preparation and plating are always on point. The menu has a nice combination of old favorites (big fan of the Warm Seafood Salad) and seasonal dishes. I love the drinks; the cocktail menu is equally balanced with surprises and old standbys too. Service is attentive and friendly, and their recommendations are accurate. I love the vibe. My friend and I were looking for a good brunch location near my apartment on a Saturday morning and we stumbled upon this place while scrolling through Yelp and decided to give it a try mostly due to its beautiful interior that we glimpsed online. We called ahead to see if there was any openings and if we could reserve our seats before entering and they agreed. We arrived around noon on Saturday and it was already bustling. We were seated in a booth right next to the door. As soon as we walked in we could see that the online photos were not lying, the space was cozy, rustic and very inviting. This is an absolutely lovely place to take a date. Our server was very friendly and efficient throughout the whole meal. She brought our water and drinks over right away and the food order was also quickly taken and brought over. They first started us off with a plate of bread. The bread is constantly refilled every time you finish all the pieces and is served with olive oil (but we were able to get a side of balsamic vinegar with it as well). The bread itself was meh - it was pretty dry and cold. It would have been a better start to the meal if the bread tasted more fresh and was warmed. It would also have been nice to be served with both the olive oil as well as some softened butter. Afterwards we were able to order our entrees. I decided to get the crispy hake sandwich and it was definitely an excellent choice. The sandwich was simple and delicious. The fish was not overly fried, just lightly crispy. It was very fresh and really worked well together. Additionally, the fries it came with were tasty as well. And was actually a great portion. For starters, I enjoyed the Spicy Yellowfin Tuna Tartare Lettuce Cups and the Peekytoe Crab Dumplings, Meyer Lemon-Celeriac Infusion with Ginger. The tuna was incredibly fresh and well flavored, unique for a tuna tartare. Even more outstanding were the crab dumplings, which were gentle and served in a delicate broth. For entrees, the Roasted Duck Breast was a fan favorite, but I thoroughly enjoyed my Pumpkin Seed Crusted Faroe Island Salmon. The Decadent Chocolate Cake is a must-try for any chocolate lover! We had their Family Style Salmon Dinner, which came with three courses beautifully packaged up for $78. The escarole, grapefruit, gorgonzola dolce salad was generously portioned and a simple treat. The salmon was surprisingly delicious for take-out (I won't criticize their cook on it too much since it was to go), paired with vanilla (!) and sage mushrooms and broccoli rabe. My fiancé did NOT like the vanilla (she said it was too reminiscent of dessert), but I was a fan. Butterscotch pudding for dessert was OK (not too flavorful) but came with a nice shortbread cookie. We absolutely loved the food, ambience, service, and overall decor of this restaurant! I've had this place bookmarked for a little while after getting the recommendation from a friend that it was one of Jean Georges' restaurant. Looking into it more, it turns out this is his very first restaurant but was recently renovated. When you walk in, it's basically a house that was converted into a restaurant which just adds to the coziness feel. Everything is simply beautiful. The dim lighting, every single plate and cup we got was unique but simplistic at the same time. It reminded us of how ABC Kitchen is designed but a little more on the casual side. For the food, we opted to do family style and shared the tuna tartare for appetizer, then the crispy skin organic chicken, charred duck breast and the sea bass. The tartare was good, but a little on the peppery side (something I wasn't used to but it was still good). We loved the crispy skin chicken, the skin was a perfect crisp and all the flavors went well together with the potatoes and fried onions. The sea bass was steamed perfectly and also very delicious with the potatoes puree. The charred duck breast was also really good, cooked medium and very tender. The service was also amazing, everyone was super friendly and our waitress shared her recommendations with us. We never felt rushed, our water glasses were always filled (this is important to me lol), and just overall we felt so welcomed, comfortable, casual, and fancy all at the same time. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that will ask me for a good restaurant to check out! I'm sad I didn't know about this restaurant sooner! read more

Wow. What a lovely restaurant with outstanding food. A friend and I had a truly divine meal last night at JoJo. The space is warm and fancy-casual, very relaxed. This is matched by service that is similarly inviting and across the board excellent. And then the food: For starters, I had their tweak on a Caesar:Broccoli and Kale Salad, 6-Minute Egg, Parmesan, Mustard Vinaigrette with Herbs. It was just what I wanted, fresh veg, lovely dressing, perfectly cooked egg with runny yolk over everything. My friend had: Warm Seafood Salad, Avocado, Citrus-Shallot Dressing and Parsley. This was killer. The citrus and other flavors were wonderful and it included the most perfectly cooked shrimp either of us have ever had. Entrees. He had Charred Duck Breast, Strawberry and Mustard Seed Pickle, Quinoa and Peas. This was very good, with - oddly since I hate quinoa - the best quinoa you'll ever have in your life. Also some very deep and satisfying flavors. I had Crispy Skin Organic Chicken, Lemon and Olive Oil Potatoes, Fried Onions and Potato Skins . Wow. Just wow. Everything about this dish was perfect. Moist, succulent chicken with crispy skin, the potatoes were mouth watering and we both agreed the onion rings were deliriously perfect. There was a lot of textural wonderfulness going on here. We splurged and had dessert and thank goodness. The carrot cake was terrific... moist and full of warm spice with a wonderful frosting. And then the genius of the night... peach pie. I am from the south. I've eaten, and made, 100's of peach pies over the course of my life. This is hands down the best peach pie I've ever had, ever. We did Thanksgiving dinner at JoJos, There were 8 of us ranging in age from 21-86. We went due to the menu not the price, but at that price NO ONE was happy. The bread was terrible and uneatable. The appetizers: those who ordered the spiced tuna had the same complaint, too spicy and too salty. The crabmeat dumplings were flat, no taste. Main courses: no one was happy with the lobster. All who had it were not impressed with the taste. The salmon was soaked in vinegar and was very sour. Plus it had a few mushrooms with no taste. The steak was so small the 21 year old complained he was still hungry. Desert: The apple pie had crushed apples. Best part was the ice cream. We had such a great time dining here! My husband used to work here some 15+ yrs back. I remember he used to love the food there. So, we all wanted to surprise him for his birthday! The food was delicious and the service was superb. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Loved the ambiance, not too crowded. The manager was genuinely a nice guy.
