I met up with friends this evening for a party of four. I arrived early and enjoyed a pregaming drink at the bar, something they call an "Irish Lad" that has Jameson and triple sec and it was quite delicious. Bar area is comfortable and they have six or so televisions hanging on the wall tuned in to various sports channels. On a Red Sox game day or Sunday Patriots football, this is probably quite the spot. We sat outside this evening and other than several entirely too loud motorcycles going to and fro with the Harley dealer up the street, it was quite pleasant. We had good service from a friendly waitress who mostly got our orders correct and when she didn't, apologized. I had the sirloin steak tips for main course. A big portion of large pieces of meat, they were covered in a bourbon sauce that was tasty. And now that I think about it, I wasn't asked how I wanted them done. They were medium. Onion rings on the side were tasty. Desserts looked great. Apple crisp and hot fudge sundae were good sized portions and presented well. One of my favorite regular spots. Good food, great staff and atmosphere. Recently had a few issues. A recent visit I ordered a garden salad with grilled chicken. Salad came out more like a Caesar salad with barely any chicken. Tonight I ordered takeout and my turkey BLT came with no bacon on it. Not sure if they hired new kitchen staff. Food was solid pub food. Arrived on a night when the Bruins are playing in a playoff game. 9 TVs in the bar area clearly set up for a sports bar atmosphere. I asked for the sound on for the game and basically went ignored. I now know why the bar was empty. Manager playing on his phone after being asked for the sound. These employees were just hoping everyone would leave so they could go home. No interest in making money and running a successful business. Too bad. Went to this place because I live near it. My husband got the western burger and asked for it to be cooked medium. As you can see in the photo attached, it is practically raw and was an extremely greasy mess. I got the haddock BLT sandwich and the fish did not taste fresh, and the tartar sauce tasted sour. We got the fried pickles as an appetizer which you only get 5 finger sized pickle slices. Chips would have been better. Probably won't be back. read more

We moved to this area about a year ago. JRs is our go to place to dine... after work, with friends, overall first choice. Food is consistently good and delicious. Wait staff are attentive and friendly. Manager almost always stops by table to check on how things are going. Mixed drinks are well done when we have them. Atmosphere is nice, always clean. We've never had a bad meal... nor have our friends when they join us. Highly recommend for a casual meal. read more

Tonight was our second visit to the new Jon Ryan's in Billerica. Both visits we had basically the same experience so I can start off by saying that they are at least consistent. Both visits we were greeted and seated promptly. Immediately upon entering the main dining room we were overwhelmed by a fishy stench that loomed around for the entire rest of the meal. Like many of the other reviews state, the service was not great by any means. We have gone on the weekend and a weeknight and we were neglected by our server both times. The second visit, it appeared that our server was more interested in socializing with a couple at another table that she clearly knew outside of work. She must have spent twenty minutes standing and talking to them while we waited for a side of sauce that I asked for and never did show up. I ordered a beer the first visit and it was warm and flat. It appears that an issue was found and resolved since, but I wouldn't expect a place that considers itself a 'pub' to have this kind of problem. The soda was fine on the second visit. I need to reiterate from the other reviews that this place is EXPENSIVE. Our dinner for two was $35 and we didn't even order an appetizer, alcohol or anything off of the 'pub favorites' section of the menu, where you won't find anything under $14. The menu is fairly extensive and there is something for everyone, but the pricing of pretty much everything on the menu is a major turn off, especially for an area like Billerica. If the food was outstanding I may give them the benefit of the doubt, but it isn't, which leads me to.. The food is good, not great and definitely nothing to write home about. I will say that the buffalo chicken wrap was generously filled with juicy chicken fingers and looked about as good as it does in the picture on the menu. The second time I got the western burger which was bland and boring. The burger has cheddar cheese, bacon and onion rings on it? Funny, I didn't taste any of those things. All I tasted was the BBQ sauce that the burger was drowning in. The burger was cooked to my liking but that was about the only redeeming factor unfortunately. Like one of the other reviewers commented, the menu states that the fries are 'unbelievable'. They are not unbelievable. They clearly came from a bag from the freezer and had no taste whatsoever. We're going to give Jon Ryan's at least a couple months before considering returning. I have also been to the Tewksbury location and did have a better experience there. I find it comical that the tagline for the restaurant is 'Fresh is the Standard' when they are clearly cooking from the freezer for multiple dishes. They completely missed the idea of what it means to be fresh when it comes to food. I want to like Jon Ryan's, but an extremely overpriced menu and poor table service is a sign that I need to stay away until they straighten things out. read more

I've now been to John Ryans twice, both at this new Billerica location. Having just reopened everything is nice and clean, basic decor, nothing to complain about there. Both times my party entered we were greeted right away by a pleasant hostess and seated immediately. The first time I visited I ordered the Caesar salad. It wasn't terrible, I could certainly eat it, but it was bland, the lettuce was limp and the dressing was just a bit off. The croutons were the only redeeming factor. But it was inexpensive so I couldn't complain too much. The second time I decided to try a sandwich. I got the chicken parm. It said it came with, and I'm quoting the menu "our unbelievable fries". It arrives and doesn't look all that appetizing. The chicken was cooked well and they used fresh mozzarella which was nice but the sauce was just not good. It was clearly at one point a (probably) frozen bagged sauce. And it just overwhelmed the sandwich with lumpy chunks of tomato paste. The fries were also very obviously a bagged frozen fry no seasoning and therefore not unbelievable. Tasted fine once I threw some salt and pepper on them but something I could have easily made from my own freezer. Finally, the service. We were greeted by a very nice hostess right away like I mentioned, and our waitress was nice when she came to take our order for drinks and food, but then she vanished and only returned to our table at the end of the meal to ask if we needed anything. It was a little late for that. Despite the fact that the meal was served quickly before we could realize the side sauces were missing for the sandwiches, it was way too late to get them at that point. So three stars because it was edible food that didn't make us sick but the service was mostly absent. I'm probably not going to come back just because for the same money we spend here we could go to a lot of other places just as close by. read more

Ordered takeout lunch from there. The food was decent, nothing to write home about, and over priced. They also added on charges for the container in which the food was packages and a "local tax" which according to my research doesn't exist in the town where the restaurant is located. The 2 bogus charges added another 6% onto my bill. Their offerings are expensive enough they should be ashamed of themselves nickeling and diming their customers like this. It goes without saying I won't be going there again. I hope their happy with their greedy money grab, it made them a few cents but cost them a customer. read more

For this location it's been remodeled and looks very nice. As the owner worked for the 99 restaurant in the past and opened his own it almost looks the same. Inside was clean cozy. We walked in and we're waiting with another couple which felt like forever. A manager sat us down. I got a tall blue moon my friend got a cosmo. We ordered a veggie burger with mashed and a western burger. Her veggie burger was not good awful it was falling apart and the beans were hard like pellets. The mashed was cold and there was a legit tiny scoop see pictures. She has said she had better veggie pattys st Burger King which is true. My burger was okay. It felt Like it was a frozen party as it was small and didn't seem fresh by all means. Once we got our drink her cosmo looked and tasted like dirty water. ( see picture) with an rotten lime. My blue moon was okay. She ordered cosmo hoping the second would be better and nope looked the same and I noticed lipstick marks all over here glass! My friend doesn't wear lipstick and I was freaking out. See picture! We got our food I noticed a hair in my meal after I ate my burger and just asked for a manager. She came over and just took one drink off and didn't really do anything about it ( see picture of receipt). Our waiter was very friendly and nice so it's not his fault. The food at this particular location is very inconsistent. Sometimes, the order is made correctly, and other times, it is far from accurate. I was ordering take out, and now, the restaurant is charging a fee for take out. I understand that to-go containers cost money, but if you are ordering take out, it seems odd to be charged an additional fee for that. Take-out is a part of every restaurant business, and this is one sure fire away to encourage customers to make an alternate choice for dinner. read more

Walked into pub with wife and two others looking for a meal on a Saturday evening at approximately 8:30 pm, place was practically empty except for the bar. Waited in the lobby at the hostess stand to be seated in the restaurant for 10 minutes NO ONE approached us to greet us or seat us. It was if we're we invisible to all in the building. After a few more minutes we decided it was time to leave and try another spot. We will not be returning to this pub in the future. read more

Went to finally try the Billerica location of Jon Ryan's yesterday after having good experience at the Tewksbury location. Unfortunately even though their website said they were open, they were not. Found out later after having to go to that locations Facebook page, which is not the one linked on the main website page, that the location will be closed for 4-6 weeks for renovations. Our family eats out at least a few times a month. This was our first and last time here. The positives: It was very quiet in the restaurant. We were seated and our order was taken right away. The negatives (some): -We rarely saw our server and had to ask another server to find her for us. -My son orders fried fish every time we eat out. Never has he had a piece of fish so full of bones. -My daughter could live on pasta yet couldn't eat more than one bite of her pasta and sauce. My husband and I tried and agreed with her. - The kids ice cream sandwiches looked as though they had melted and been refrozen. Needless to say, they did not eat them. -The women's bathroom was terrible. One toilet was completely clogged. The other stall smelled terrible. We then noticed the small trash barrel with vomit in it. We have never been so unanimously disappointed at a restaurant. read more

Wanted to provide a small update to my previous review! Previously I held issue with the bad service and issue with how the draft beers tasted (the food was solid). This alone had warranted a two star review of John Ryan's. I have not yet had the chance to return to John Ryan's but I have been contacted by the owner - my interaction with the owner has been the most helpful and transparent customer service experience I've ever had. His excellence in customer outreach and service alone has prompted me to update this review with a better score. This was my third time here. This isn't fine dining, just tasty pub grub at moderate prices. So far I have had the chicken parmesan, butternut squash with chicken and broccoli, and a meatloaf sinner. I have not been disappointed. All were washed down with the house Merlot. Hubby is hooked on fish and chips which he has ordered twice. Finally, a lounge for 'after work' crowd over the age of 21! Fabulous cocktails, beers, apps. Meet cousins here once a month to catch up. I ordered the turkey burger, which was topped with lettuce, tomato, and guacamole and normally comes with sweet potato wedges, but I opted for the fries.
