I love the French Dip here! It's basic - just meat, roll & broth - but very flavorful. Beef has been consistently tender. I also really like their fries - oh AND their baked goods. Honey Bran muffin is excellent. AND their Lemon Lush pie is my favorite dessert. Service is always really good, waits can be long as it is a popular restaurant. I've been going here for years and it's always had a good chill coffee shop vibe. Definite LB classic!
Bake n Broil has some exceptional.baked goods. I pre-ordered a German Chocolate Cake. I love that you can have it the traditional way, without icing on the sides. I have had many cakes before this one over the years,.almost every flavor including this one. They have always been so good and moist! Unfortunately this one was quite dry but the icing was spot on! I woukd still recommend getting this flavor, thi k it was just a one off. I also ordered a cinnamon roll to go. It was so good! As always, service was excellent!
I can only speak on the red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Solid 5 stars. Tender crumb, not overly sweet, creamy but dense frosting with little walnut bits for texture. My coworkers rave about the chicken pot pie in spite of it only having a top crust. Put it on the bucket list!
Service was a lot better today. Came in and this restaurant was busy Monday (non Holiday) around 1:15pm. Busser brought us water. Order was taken efficiently and soups were served in a good timely manner. When I told the server about the issues on the meat. Didn't seemed concern or care. Ambiance was loud as expected. People's voices carrying through dining area. Here is the bad for me. The French onion soup tasted super sour and acidic. Not sure if they use the red wine like traditional French onion soups but super acidic and sour. Didn't like the soup. The worst part was I ordered the Pastrami Reuben and didn't look like any Pastrami Reuben I have ever had. The meat had so much unrendered fat and connective parts of the pork it was completely inedible. Sandwich lacked meat and cross section photo shows. Also very sloppy build for a restaurant of this level. Unfortunately this will be my last time trying this popular location. 2 - service. 0- food quality
Love bake n broil always great service great food. Whenever I have a sweet tooth my go to is always bake n broil. I'm a baker of German Chocolate Cake also, when l don't want to bake so happy l can pick up a slice of cake. The slice is so big it lasts me for 2-3 days. Love the decor kinda gives the old coffee shop vibes that's modern for our community to enjoy #supportlocalbusinesses
This spot is located right on Atlantic and 37th St. so find parking on the street. First time coming here, one thing to know is that if you're by yourself or with a party of two and you don't mind sitting at the counter, the countertop is first come first serve so you don't have to wait on the waitlist and make the same mistake that I did. At the end of the day, that's exactly where I sat on the countertop realizing it's first come first serve. Our server was great we were immediately greeted. She took our order this place has a lot of bake goods muffins, cinnamon rolls, cake pies you name it. couldn't help it to order the cinnamon roll, which is pretty huge. Unfortunately the cinnamon roll is bland but pretty big good enough to share. What are their protein omelette which comes with a muffin or toast, picked out of toast and this omelette is all egg whites spinach, grilled chicken, breasts, peppers, onions, tomatoes, with cheese also comes with a side of potatoes, my friend, what are their huevos rancheros. I like how their jams are homemade which is pretty nice pretty busy so do you expect the wait time but it kind of goes by quick I highly recommend
Their parking? Bleh. Their price point? Meh. Their pie crust? Oh hell yeah. Came in with a small group early on a Wednesday afternoon maybe an hour before closing, and most of the tables were still filled with diners. We were seated right away in the way way back of the restaurant. The layout and decor of the place gives it a classic, borderline kitschy vibe. You can tell it's a place that's managed to hold its own for like 60 years (!!!). The server was friendly, overall service was prompt, and the portions were solid. I got the quiche of the day, which was ham and cheese, and it was amazing. It came with a side (salad was fresh and crisp) and a muffin -- their raspberry streusel muffin was so delicious and a perfect dessert to tie the meal together. I would definitely get this special again, and look forward to trying their other versions of both quiches and muffins. Others at my table got strawberry pancakes, a pastrami sandwich, and chicken fried steak. All food was devoured, so I take it that it was good. However, I really think that the baked goods make this place. So if you go, don't skip out on those.
Omg, i had to wrote another review. Was meeting a friend from out of town coming in from Long Beach Airport. It was the perfect location. We enjoyed a great lunch. The Obion rings had me off a delicate tempura-like batter not the beer batter or breadcrumb fry I'm accustommed to but pretty good. Of course, i had to try the Lush Pie. This was probably the best lemon pie dessert ever! So good, my friend had to order her own dessert. Looks like a popular place with the locals. Service was friendly and attentive. For sure coming back! Street parking.
Me and my aunt decided to come here after hearing the great reviews on this place on a Friday morning. Parking isnt the best and we had to park down the street and around the corner but we didn't mind the walk. We came around 11 or so we put on name on the list and it took about 20-25 min before we were called back. We for a table right next to the window. Our waitress Juleni was super sweet and helpful ( she even complimented my freckles ). I ordered the chicken pot pie with side salad with Italian dressing and a hot green tea. My aunt ordered the clam chowder and turkey sandwich in squaw bread and a hot green tea also. Our food came out very quickly maybe 5 minutes or so after ordering. We both really enjoyed our meals. I haven't had a chicken pot pie in awhile and it was the perfect crust to filling ratio and very filling. The salad was really good as well. Although the restaurant was packed we didn't feel rushed and were able to catch up and spend time together which we both appreciated
On a busy Tuesday morning this place was packed. We waited about 10 minutes before we were sat. The servers keep the flow going to avoid long wait times. Upon entering, the first thing you see is the fresh baked pies and cakes...yummy. The portions of the breakfast plates was plenty and delicious. From the chicken fried steak to pork chops and eggs the food was on point. Save room for the sweet stuff. The lemon meringue was amazing. It was served still warm from the oven with delicious flavor. With the small town vibe they make you feel like you're a local. Definitely returning for more on my next trip south.
This is an iconic place for anyone who grew up in the LBC. I have been here a few times and every visit, the service and food is amazing. Because it is so popular, it can get busy and since it is a bit small, you may need to wait, but it is well worth the wait. A few of my favorite dishes include the country fried steak, french toast, chicken pot pie, and the homemade pies. There is such a great variety of food that I am sure you will have no problem finding something to your liking. As you sit in the cafe, you can get some free smells of all their homemade pies. My favorite is the peach pie, it is fruity, fresh, flavorful, and pairs well with a scoop of ice cream. If needed, you can always take a pie home if you are too full from your entree. The staff here are so nice and often times, you will find the owners helping out during busy peak days. They are attentive and quick to serve. Every time has been great so I highly recommend if you are looking for some great breakfast or an early lunch. This is a Long Beach staple, so don't miss out!
I'd been putting off dining in because there always seems to be a line, but I finally made it and wow, I get the hype now. We arrived just a few minutes after opening and it was already filling up. The food is amazing. I ordered the turkey, spinach, and cheese omelet with added mushrooms, and it was perfection. I also shared the banana pancakes with my sister-in-law and stole a few bites of my boyfriend's biscuits and gravy. Every flavor was memorable! And let's not forget the homemade jam. If you have the option to get toast, try the sourdough and absolutely drench it in that jam..trust me. Despite how busy it looked, the service was quick, and the food came out fast. The place seems small when you first walk in, but there's extra seating in the back, so they keep things moving efficiently. Overall, totally worth the wait. I'm already planning my next visit.
I can't believe I'm just now writing a review, considering I've been coming here since the mid-'90s. Bake N Broil is truly a neighborhood gem. If you don't believe it, just drive by and watch the number of people waiting outside--and inside--for a table. They don't take reservations, which is a bit of a bummer, but honestly, it's usually worth the wait. I've always ordered breakfast, and everything I've had over the years has been consistently good. My go-to orders are the diced ham & eggs, banana nut pancakes, and the ABC omelette. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. They used to be open until 8pm, so I was surprised on a recent Sunday visit to learn they now close at 2pm for dine-in. They do remain open for takeout only until around 7pm or 8pm. Parking can be a little challenging. There's limited street parking, plus a lot behind the restaurant. Back in the day, you could park in the church lot across the street, but I'm not sure if that's still allowed. Oh and can't forget about the baked goods. Lemon lush pie, the muffins, and slice of red velvet cake- So good! Overall, I'm glad to see that after all these years, the food and service are still exceptional.
Jongewaard's reminds of a Long Beach version of Cassell's, a sunnily lit, cozy diner space with a menu full of comfort food but with walls decked out in enough fresh white veneer to make you feel like it's been recently updated. Stepping into the restaurant for the first time, the mix of yuppies and obvious neighborhood regulars immediately alert you that you are someplace special. Around 10:30AM on a Saturday, the uncrossed-off waitlist for a table was already 2 pages deep, but my husband and I were able to snag stools at the counter within about 15 minutes. It's first come first serve and competitive for sure, but the restaurant crew does a good job of churning through the service efficiently. I came for the pie, but started with a delicious bowl of clam chowder. Thick with chewy clams and large potato chunks, this really scratched my perpetual clam chowder itch, and I gave myself a mental high five for coming on a day when it was featured. Hurray for chowder on a non-Friday! (Seriously, Los Angeles, what's up with that?) I definitely want to swing back on a day they have split pea soup with ham, my favorite ugly-delicious food. For my carby accompaniment, I opted for an upgrade to biscuits and gravy instead of the usual cornbread or muffin or roll and was rewarded with 2 light and flaky biscuit specimens blanketed with creamy sausage gravy. I ate part of my biscuits with the fresh, homemade jam offered at every seat--one pineapple/peach, I believe, and a very sweet strawberry. The jams were so unbelievably flavorful and filled with chunky fruit--definitely one of my favorite parts of this dining experience. Though it was a pre-holiday day (December 23rd) when they were busier sending out whole pies than baking them, I managed to snag a slice each of the banana cream and the holiday lush. The banana cream is a great rendition, with realish cream, very banana-y pudding (though it could have been richer and less gelatinous (more egg! less cornstarch!), and a not-soggy crust. Not my favorite banana cream pie I've ever had, as it probably could have used twice as many banana chunks, but a satisfying slice nonethless. The holiday lush was a spectacle upon itself. It featured shredded apple mixed with a cranberry jam or sorts, on top of a thick layer of fluffy cream cheese, all topped with a cloud of whipped cream around the edges. The crowning touches were the dusting of crumb topping on the fruit and a fabulously crunchy layer of crushed pecans under the cream cheese. I always appreciate a unique pie recipe, and I liked this more and more after every bite. My husband-on-a-diet ordered a vegetarian omelette, which came topped with a thick coat of bright orange melted cheddar and hash browns. He said it was a bit dry, but the salsa on the counter made it infinitely better, his expresso that was served to him as a doppio kept him happy. My own coffee mug never ran dry, and although we were given our bill halfway through our meal, we never felt rushed, and the service was consistently quick and attentive. Quick turnover coupled with excellent hospitality--Jongewaard's has mastered this formula. I think I'll find myself looking for opportunities to be near Long Beach at brunchtime from now on--kudos to the lucky regulars who can call this their neighborhood spot. If I lived close at all, I'm sure I'd find myself amongst this group as well. Despite the inevitable wait, Jongewaard is an excellent brunch experience, and the pies are too lovely to pass up. read more

Ambience is excellent. Service is good. Our server was a little attentive although it takes a while in between her visits to our table. Was not too happy with one of the cups with left over smeared lipstick and food presentation. The cook just shlepped cheese over my omelette with ooze all over the plate. Any decent cook with knowledge of food prep would have removed the excess sauce or melted cheese or what not to have an appealing presentation. I could have given two stars for it but the bran muffin tugged the score up a bit. Will I be back? Not sure.... read more

Seriously, 242 review and 4.5 stars? That's pretty damn good. I was expecting some bomb ass food when I came here. The restaurant is pretty small, the front half of the room was full so we had to go to the back room and it felt like we were going through a maze to get back there. I was in the mood for French onion soup and wanted to try their red velvet cake so I ordered a half a roast beef sandwich on white with French onion soup and got a slice of red velvet cake with it also for $8.95. My friend got three blueberry pancakes and 3 pieces of bacon with scambled eggs. I think our bill came out to like $22 including tip, not too bad for brunch. I thought the food would be to die for...but I guess I ordered the wrong thing. I only have Vie de France's French onion soup to compare with Jongewaard's French onion soup..and I'd say VDF is like 10x better lol..last time I order French food from an American diner. The sandwich was very plain...luckily the red velvet cake made up for the meal somewhat. The red velvet cake was good, moist and rich. My friends pancakes were huge! And filled with tons of blueberries. Bacon was on point, hot and crispy. I'd give this place another try because I want to try their other desserts and pot pie...but off my first impression, meh, I've experienced better. read more

This place I bumped in by coincidence during my stay away from Riverside....It's Amazing! Those Pot Pies are to die for! And the Onion rings are a meal itself, the Lemon cheesecake pie and chocolate and butter cream cake are out of this world! This review is solely for the Lemon Lush Pie. Heavenly, light cream cheese, perfectly tart lemon and THAT CRUST is SOOO GOOD! It may contain nuts if I remember correctly. Just one slice is overindulgent for me--though I am NOT complaining. A little goes a long way and I'll be back for another slice and I'll pack leftovers to take home! read more

I've picked up pies, quiches, cakes, you name it but I have never once had breakfast here until recently. I can without a doubt say that every single thing they serve and bake here is the best of the best and incredibly delicious! During Thanksgiving time, they make the BEST pies and I put in an order or two in advance so that I can avoid the chances of them running out. They're so fast and efficient and most importantly fresh! As for birthday cakes, their red velvet is a family favorite. Talk about making an entrance with one of their massive cakes. read more

I've been coming to bake broil for a very long time with big bro. He's been even going there longer then me and this place is still great and hasn't change since the first day I went in there besides the decor. Their quality of food is great and their staff is awesome and friendly. I've never had a bad meal there and this place just feels homey. They have some of the best if not thee best pies and cakes in town. Their lemon lush is delicious if you can decide on what pie to geThis is a great place for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a late night sweet tooth craving with a nice cup of coffee. I cannot believe this restaurant has been around longer than I have been alive and I have never been! What a shock and what a loss to me all these years. Went to this restaurant and have seriously fallen in love with it. It is as cute as it is yummy. Have been for dinner and for breakfast. Doubt I will make lunch unless it is a weekend. Since this isnt really right down the street from my home, I have to make the drive there. Every ounce of gas and every minute spent is worth it times 10! I will tell you this: If you go, you will enjoy every bite. Mac and Cheese - awesome Salads - fresh Omelettes - substantial and filling, tasty too Quiche - light flakey crust and light and fluffy Desserts - simply out of this world (so far Ive had cake and pie) I sat at the counter for breakfast the other day and literally thought, I think they sell more pies than Marie Calendars at Thanksgiving or Christmas and this is not even a holiday!? How can this be that I have never been. Drove by it every few months many years ago and would never think to stop because, I don't frequent the neighborhood. I am now a stalker of Bake and Broil. Jongewaard's Bake N Broil is a sweet and classic diner that serves delightfully simple dishes that hit the spot. Food Overall 8/10 Simple and Classic Today's quiche of the day was an eggy dream laced with melted cheese and diced ham. Seasoned to perfection. The crust was lighter than I'm used to but it worked well. My quiche was served with a cup of mixed fruits and a muffin of choice (banana nut). The fruit cup was just that, fruit in a cup. The banana nut muffin was moist and tasty. My friend who loathes bananas took a bite and thought it was pretty good, which means a lot. Although I was looking forward to the red velvet cake, I was left completely underwhelmed. It was rather dry, and quite ordinary. The apple pie on the other hand was fantastico. Probably one of the best apple pies I have ever eaten (although I could have used a little more crust, I love crust). Area Overall 7/10 Cute and Clean, Although I noticed a few of the seats in their booths had noticeable tears with white stuffing peeping I also spotted a chip on my dessert place but I think all of that added to the charm of the place read more

I have been meaning to try this place for awhile, with that said...It was a great find...My coworker and I went there for lunch...Everything was great and service was friendly and fast...I totally recommend this place...Desserts don't dissappoint...I'm not big on bananas, bit their Banana walnut cream cake was so delicious...and the coconut pineapple cake...Well you will have to go there and experience it for yourself...This place gets an A+++++++++...I will be back... read more

There are a few parking spaces behind the building, but count on parking on the street. We went during the day, and there was adequate parking. I don't what it's like in the evening when residents return home from work.

Round Cakes serve 12-15, 1/2 Sheet Cakes serve 24-36.
Can I make reservations?
They do not take reservations. But there is also counter seating so you can skip the line. It's first come, first serve so there may be a little wait.

I got a frozen chicken pot pie, but there are no directions on how to cook it? Help
I would cook it for 30 mins in a preheated oven 375-400 depending on your oven. Check with a butter knife to see if it ready to remove from the oven...

I have been there a few times and they are not fully opened to full capacity yet indoors. Perhaps calling them and perhaps after June 15th. But there is outdoor seating and its really nice weather for it now. Perhaps you may enjoy that. There is…
