I have been to every Michelin Star KBBQ restaurant in NYC, and honestly prefer Jongro over all of them. They are a chain from Korea; this is their first USA location. Occupying the 2nd floor of a Midtown office building, the ambience is a distinct nod to old Seoul. We walked in without a reservation at 9pm on a week night, and were seated immediately. The staff were friendly, and had bottles of Korean wheat beer on the table in what seemed like seconds. K-pop played loudly through the speakers, punctuated by sizzling tabletop grills. My husband opted for their Beef Platter, which serves 2-3 people and comes with your choice of soondubu or soybean paste soup, plus unlimited banchan. I do not eat meat, so he was on his own with that and managed to finish it. He remarked that the meat was high quality for the price. Every side dish, from the kimchi to the fresh green salad to the corn cheese, was delicious. The Kimchi pancake was crisp and savory, but needed more kimchi in my opinion. I enjoyed the brightly spicy soondubu jjigae. As a pescatarian, I usually stick to banchan at Korean BBQ, but could not resist trying their Impossible Meat Bibimbap. My friends and I came here a few days ago right after arriving in New York because we were craving KBBQ. We were excited and expected a fun experience with good food, but it quickly turned into a frustrating and disappointing night. At the start of our meal, we turned the heat up so we could cook faster since we were really hungry. We didn't realize adjusting the heat ourselves was not allowed, and instead of explaining it calmly, one server came over and told us, "Do not touch the heat at all. It is a safety hazard." We were fine respecting the policy, but after that, it felt like we were being watched and targeted. Every time staff came by our table, they would turn the heat down on purpose--even after we repeatedly asked for it to be higher. One server tried to listen to us, but another staff member kept stepping in and insisting on lowering the heat. We could clearly tell when the meat stopped sizzling, and it ended up taking forever to cook and tasted rubbery. What made this worse was the one hour and thirty minute time limit. As last call approached, we were pressured to order more meat, yet we weren't allowed to cook efficiently. On top of that, the restaurant charges an extra 30% if you go over the time limit and adds fees for any leftover food. It felt like they cared more about charging penalties than letting customers actually enjoy their meal. Our entire group has experience working at KBBQ restaurants, so we understand tipping culture. Still, the attitudes from multiple employees made the environment uncomfortable and unwelcoming. The food itself wasn't great either, and one person in our group ended up with food poisoning the next night. Even after all of this, we still tipped. The server's visible annoyance at receiving a 15% tip was disappointing. Good tips are earned through good service, and unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. I have been to Jongro a couple of times in the last month around 6 PM on a Sunday night both times. Each time though the restaurant was busy it was not too crowded so we were seated right away. Even as a party of two they still seat you in a pretty private booth which is nice. The service at Jongro is so quick and efficient. They take your order right away and get the food out to you quickly. The only item that took a while to come out though was the naengymeon. Both times I have ordered the marinated meat combo. Flavor and quality of the meats is very good. The servers cook each combo of meat one at a time and give you some time to eat the meat before they start working on the next selection of meats. Each combo also comes with steamed egg, banchans, corn cheese and a small order of intestines. Everything had a great flavor and the meat was very tender. There is so much food and we ended up having a lot of leftovers to take home. The naengmyeon's flavor was really good though it was a little spicy. There were a lot of components to the dish but the items went well together and the noodles were cooked perfectly well for both that soft but slightly chewy texture. We came to celebrate my mother's 78th birthday. She is Korean, if that matters to you. The beef galbi was so tender and flavorful. I had the dolsot bibimbap, and it was cooked to perfection, with the perfect amount of crisp to the rice and Korean gosari, which is typically subbed out with spinach. It was the best I've had not in Korea. My mom also ordered the seafood bean paste soup, which was top notch. This restaurant excels beyond just the bbq portion of the meal, and does everything well... they even tolerated my mom being a little bit of a stereotypical Korean halmoni IYKYK. Intestine quality and the way it's cooked is very DIFFERENT intestine which comes with meat combo VS. intestine itself. Intestine alone = so much fat, not cooked well enough when requested for fully cooked one. Most importantly this place is shady because they give you different quality. I have been getting the name of this restaurant wrong for years! I always thought it was JUngro, which I think means the "right way" in Korean. But I was meeting some co-workers here for lunch and realized it is JOngro, which is not a Korean word I know. I think I like my version better because it would be an apt description of how they prepare their food. Although finding the right way in can be confusing because there are no signs telling you to take the elevator to the second floor. I went with their lunch special and got the kalbi/short rib (with co-workers so a little formal for my usual LA style) and cold noodle soup. With food prices going up, the lunch special is a pretty good deal! I douse the noodle soup in vinegar and mustard and the noodles and broth hold up well. The kalbi is tender and pretty flavorful although i could use a little more char and a little more flavor. For the lunch special, the meat is cooked in the kitchen so we miss out on the tabletop grilling but we also do not walk out with the BBQ smell on our clothes so perfect for a working lunch. There are probably only a couple of places where the BBQ is The decor is old school and the space is huge, and service was attentive. Delicious bbq! Just super expensive (but we're in the heart of NYC so I guess it's normal? :')) We ordered the marinated beef set and it was delicious! It came with soup and a melt in your mouth (and perfectly seasoned) steamed egg. I also ordered their lychee cocktail and it was SO GOOD- the lychee flavor was strong and did not taste artificial at all -- it tasted like juice. All of the components of the set worked so well together and it was a satisfying meal. The only disappointment was their kimchi unfortunately. This Friday, we visited around 4:30 PM and ordered the marinated beef and seafood tofu. We were surprised to see that the appetizers had all changed to pickles--no more fish cake, cucumber, smashed potato, or potato salad. The pickled items were overly salty and not refreshing at all. Strike #1. When the marinated beef arrived, we noticed the portion had shrunk significantly. It was about the same size as the rice bowl I was holding--and it cost $50. Strike #2. They used to serve this dish with steamed egg, but due to the egg shortage, it was replaced with corn and cheese--which wasn't to my liking. And in the tofu stew, there was only half an egg. Strike #3. 07/2024 We visited on a Friday night and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for two. We ordered pork belly, beef ribs, and tofu stew. The pork belly was fresh, tasty, and had a pleasantly chewy texture. The beef ribs, whose name starts with 'K' (though I've forgotten the exact name), were soft and flavorful--highly recommended, and definitely worth a return visit. Heard this place gets busy but it was a weekday afternoon so we took a chance (no reservation) and luckily It worked out. None of us knew what we were in for! Came on Easter Sunday around 5 pm. The hostess informed us that they just opened the fifth floor and there was no wait, so we were seated immediately. Beef platter 1 on the menu says it's for 2-3 people and it was more than enough for my friend and I. We were really full by the end of the meal! They blast retro Korean pop music in there and it seemed like I was at an outdoor Asian bbq party all day and night long. We went with a decent sized group and would recommend reserving ahead of time. It's super popular. In terms of food, it's a standard Korean bbq with all the different types of cuts of meat available. We went with 2 meat platters (1 large beef platter at around $130+ that was supposed to feed 3-4 and 1 regular for around $100+ to feed 2-4) in addition to a lot of other items. Overall, I think the meat portions could be bigger for the price, but that lower quantity to price is something I should have expected from most Korean BBQ spots. They don't offer pitchers of beer or standard pints either. For the price of an Asahi draft ($8-9), it seemed like they poured into a 12-14oz glass instead of a 16oz pint glass. You can't reserve a table for a party of less than 6 but when I come the waiting time is usually less than 15 minutes regardless of the time. I usually go to the second floor and get the beef combo, and I always leave full and pleased. My favorite meat is the wagyu. They bring all of the side dishes and most of them are great. I also love their tofu soup and the eggs, it's just something else. I've been here maybe six times and I'll always come back. They have fast service and the ambiance is nice, clean and smells like amazing food. They never mess up and when they cook your meals they divide equally so that everyone can enjoy.
