Jongeo wasn't what we expected. We were seated next to a messy table that had a lot of clutter, which wasn't a great first impression. The food was just okay. The Prime Saeng Kalbi ($55.99) was disappointing, and the Marinated Tenders were good but definitely not worth the price ($55.99). No one checked on how our food was, and it felt like they were rushing while cooking the meat. We brought my son here for his birthday. They don't accept reservations on Friday or Saturday and only accept reservations for parties of six or more Sun-Thurs. Since we were visiting on a Sunday we weren't concerned with a long wait for a table. The outside of the restaurant is unassuming. It's located in an office building. There are people in the lobby that will direct you where to go. There is the 5th floor restaurant, Jongro Gopchang, with more expansive and eclectic protein options, and the 2nd floor location that we visited, Jongro BBQ. We were seated almost immediately after exiting the elevator. The tables have tall booth backs so it feels secluded despite there being many people in the dining area. Once we sat, our table grill was turned on and our drink orders were taken. Shortly after that, we received our banchan. It's true what I've read in other reviews...the banchan is scant but we received more when we asked, with no extra charge. We opted for the large beef combination platter. It came with individual rice bowls for all of us, kimchi, gochujang with scallion and bean sprouts, sautéed jalapeños and bean sprouts, macaroni salad, lettuce, and a trio of seasoning for each person (soy sauce, salt & an amazingly yummy reddish oranges sauce that packed an umami punch. The platter also came with a soup for the table. You have a choice of bean paste stew or spicy tofu. Because we were sharing and no everyone does spicy, I chose the red bean paste. I'm glad I did because it was sooooo good! It had veggie in it and the broth had so many levels of flavor. I just wish, if were purchasing a plater for 3-4 people, that we would get 3-4 bowls of soup. The bowl was small and we had to share it. Luckily, only my son and I were interested. I wanted to order another soup and pay for it but the server said that it was a much bigger size so I opted not to. The servers take turns checking in on everyone food whole it's cooking. They first bring a huge platter of meats or whatever it is that you ordered. Then they start grilling the meat at the table. While the meat is cooking, they start your steamed eggs which was also very good. I've always seen this on menus but wanted no parts and I'm glad I had an opportunity to try it tonight because it was very flavorful and added an extra layer of texture and flavor to my rice, meats and banchan. The large beef platter coned with ribeye, skirt, brisket, kalbi and a marinated salchi cut (chuck?). All of the meat was really good. When they finished cooking, the guys grilling would cut up the pieces of meta and move them to the outer part of the grill so that the diner can easily pick them up to eat. I loved not having to work the grill. We ordered a kimchi pancake and pork dumplings, which were a perfect end because, despite the platter being enough for 3-4 people, we were all still hungry. The dumplings were great. They have a good filling ratio and sauce. The kimchi pancake did not have the kick I wanted. I definitely wish is had more kimchi but it was crispy and still tasted good. We had a good time and I would definitely go back. This was the first time ever having a zero sugar soju, which was amazing. We like soju but sometimes it can be cloyingly sweet and the zero sugar version tasted more like sake. Very good. This place is great for groups or even a date night. read more

My group of three ordered the Beef Platter with Spicy Tofu Soup to share. This was more than enough but we ordered the Spicy Rice Cake appetizer and two bowls of white rice to be safe. The boneless short rib and the pork belly were both good but the banchan options were okay. It feels like this is a very "no frills" bbq spot but you pay the prices of a higher end bbq place. The service is quick and they grill the meats for you but nothing compared to service I have had at Let's Meat and Cote. The Korean miso soup was good, I liked that it had hint of spice to it. The kimchi stew was decent. Now our main reason why we came here - janchi noodles - it was good, the broth wasn't overly flavored with anchovies, which was nice. I have been to every Michelin Star KBBQ restaurant in NYC, and honestly prefer Jongro over all of them. They are a chain from Korea; this is their first USA location. Occupying the 2nd floor of a Midtown office building, the ambience is a distinct nod to old Seoul. We walked in without a reservation at 9pm on a week night, and were seated immediately. The staff were friendly, and had bottles of Korean wheat beer on the table in what seemed like seconds. K-pop played loudly through the speakers, punctuated by sizzling tabletop grills. My husband opted for their Beef Platter, which serves 2-3 people and comes with your choice of soondubu or soybean paste soup, plus unlimited banchan. I do not eat meat, so he was on his own with that and managed to finish it. He remarked that the meat was high quality for the price. Every side dish, from the kimchi to the fresh green salad to the corn cheese, was delicious. The Kimchi pancake was crisp and savory, but needed more kimchi in my opinion. I enjoyed the brightly spicy soondubu jjigae. As a pescatarian, I usually stick to banchan at Korean BBQ, but could not resist trying their Impossible Meat Bibimbap. My friends and I came here a few days ago right after arriving in New York because we were craving KBBQ. We were excited and expected a fun experience with good food, but it quickly turned into a frustrating and disappointing night. At the start of our meal, we turned the heat up so we could cook faster since we were really hungry. We didn't realize adjusting the heat ourselves was not allowed, and instead of explaining it calmly, one server came over and told us, "Do not touch the heat at all. It is a safety hazard." We were fine respecting the policy, but after that, it felt like we were being watched and targeted. Every time staff came by our table, they would turn the heat down on purpose--even after we repeatedly asked for it to be higher. One server tried to listen to us, but another staff member kept stepping in and insisting on lowering the heat. We could clearly tell when the meat stopped sizzling, and it ended up taking forever to cook and tasted rubbery. What made this worse was the one hour and thirty minute time limit. As last call approached, we were pressured to order more meat, yet we weren't allowed to cook efficiently. On top of that, the restaurant charges an extra 30% if you go over the time limit and adds fees for any leftover food. It felt like they cared more about charging penalties than letting customers actually enjoy their meal. Our entire group has experience working at KBBQ restaurants, so we understand tipping culture. Still, the attitudes from multiple employees made the environment uncomfortable and unwelcoming. The food itself wasn't great either, and one person in our group ended up with food poisoning the next night. Even after all of this, we still tipped. The server's visible annoyance at receiving a 15% tip was disappointing. Good tips are earned through good service, and unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. Overall, this was a stressful experience, and we wouldn't recommend this place. read more
