The West Loop location has terrible customer service. I had a reservation for the bar and the bar was full so they set me at the table informing me they would move me to the bar shortly. That never happened and after sitting at the table for a while, none of the waiters walking by asked if I wanted to order let alone offered me a water until I was ready to order. I was trying to give them a second chance after I went to the Hyde Park location where my meal was lack luster. I ordered catfish and grits which consisted of 1 small piece of catfish and a plate full of bland grits. I also ordered a waffle which was not bad but they didn't inform me that they were tiny silver dollar waffles which was disappointing. The waitress informed me most people send them back, so it doesn't make sense that they don't inform you of how tiny they are when you order them. Because the other people O was with enjoyed their soul food, I decided to give them another chance in visiting the west loop location, but after this experience, I won't be returning to either location. read more

The Food was good at both locations but the service at the 53rd location is HORRIBLE!!!! Had reservations had to wait an additional 30 minutes for a table then it took another 45 minutes for the food only to bring out the wrong order. Everything was excellent! The food was awesome. There were 5 of us and we all ordered different meals just so we can taste almost everything. There's no meat in the dressing. But I swear it tasted like my mama's! The MAC-N-Cheese was fye! The Oxtails, smothered chicken, the grilled shrimp, greens Catfish and smothered turkey wings was so good! The portion size is good also. The food came out fast. The chef even came to the tables to engage the customers. The servers were really nice! Just be sure to make a reservation prior to going. This is also a BYOB establishment and they have brunch on the weekends. If I had to complain about anything. Me and my family went here for my mom's birthday. The host is extremely rude ! Our reservation was at 6pm we arrived on time and was standing for 20 minutes when it was two open tables ! So I asked why are we still waiting and this woman told me we have another party of five coming at 6:30 I was confused on what that had to do with my party of four that was currently standing waiting ! We had to ask a waiter can you please sit us because why are we waiting until 6:30 to see if the next reservation comes in when I'm here now ! So he agreed with us and sat us immediately. I definitely wanted to walk out and not give them my money but my mom really wanted to try the food. The food was amazing but not good enough for me to go back . I like going where my service is appreciated. I spent over 3 hundred dollars and left feeling like they didn't deserve my money all because of the host . I give it 3 stars for the wait alone. Had reservations for 5:15 and seated promptly. It's a small restaurant and can hold about 25 ppl max and it was full. We immediately ordered our food ( no drinks or appetizers, just the entree) as we knew exactly what we wanted and didn't want to waste time as we had a concert to attend at 7pm. The food was delicious as we know it. Hot , tasteful quality food however we waited an hour( no exaggeration) until we got our food. Wanted to love it - but unfortunately it fell short Positives - the catfish was unbelievable, had some from my girlfriend's plate, and it was the best I've ever had. It's right down the street, they have a great vibe, and an appealing menu. Negatives - Unfortunately, they're clearly still working out some kinks with the logistics, and we waited for 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated because of a large party that came in. I get it - you want to prioritize revenue and filling the place up as much as possible, but if you take reservations, you need to honor them, and start turning tables over quicker. I think they would really benefit from a maximum allowance of time on a table. To top it all off, I got some mild food poisoning the next day, which really soured the whole experience. I had a reservation, booked thru the website, for Saturday March 25, 2023 in celebration of my birthday. My reservation was for 12 people. The week prior, I called the Cafe to confirm. On the day before the dinner reservation, I called and asked if I would be able to bring in cupcakes - I was advised at that time (with my reservation still acknowledged) that I could. At 5:42p on the date of the dinner (3/25/23), I called to adjust my party size from 12 to 10, as a couple cancelled. The host "Jason" told me (with 18 minutes prior to my scheduled 6p start time - and 5 of my dinner guests already in front of the restaurant) that my reservation was cancelled. Baffled, I ask for clarification - especially since I'd confirmed twice. Jason advised that the reservation was cancelled at noon that day. For those who are familiar with Open Table / Yelp and other reservation apps, you know they provide you an email confirmation when you book, and if YOU cancel. My reservation was cancelled by the restaurant - with no warning nor explanation, despite me having spoken to them the day prior and the week prior. The only offering was "possibly seat some of you maybe at 7p but we're really busy now". This poor service and unprofessional business dealing will guarantee that Jordyn's Soul Cafe won't ever get my business. The 5 guests who'd already arrived (after traveling 90 minutes to get there from where they live) said the establishment is extremely small and suspects maybe they didn't want to risk our large party not showing up. Whatever the excuse, it doesn't justify not having the courtesy of being contacted my management to provide an explanation. Shout out to King Crab Chicago for honoring my party of 10 with last minute notice, on a Saturday night downtown (part of the reason I made my reservation weeks in advance). We noticed that they were understaffed as the "host" became our server. He was very nice and welcoming. It took another long while for our food to come out. We had starters and entrees. Fried green tomatoes, soul rolls, deviled eggs, fried catfish, candied yams, greens, dressing, macaroni and cheese, and dressing. Most of the food was good. The greens and catfish were delicious. The dressing and the macaroni and cheese were my least favorite. The dressing was runny and the macaroni and cheese was too salty. We noticed that our "annoyed neighbors" dined and dashed. Apparently, there was something wrong with most of their order and the manager refused to speak with them, so they left. We ordered drinks, but didn't get them. The staff was too busy putting out little fires everywhere. Overall, it was a decent experience. Our bill was pricey and there's an auto add for 20% gratuity. The staff deserves it. They could use some help. Hopefully, staffing will improve or go at a time that's less busy, like a weekday. read more

I love visiting new and upcoming black owned businesses. This one I wasn't too fond of. I walked in to inform them our party was here for our reservation. So I'm standing in the middle of everyone eating no one greeted me there is no hostess stand. One of the waiters finally asked did I need a table. I told him I had reservations and he said ok. He didn't instruct me where to stand I assumed it was off to the side where it was a small high top table and I saw other patrons waiting. I go back out disappointed yet I'm wanted to eat the drive just coming from church on Easter Sunday. As I'm standing waiting I see a baby stroller coming out of the kitchen area.. the woman stopped and left the baby stroller on the way of the waitresses trying to cone out with food. Granted I understand it is Easter and as a business owner you have many hats to wear but to have a infant child in the kitchen area then leave it in the way of traffic there was some many violations and accidents that could've happened. It made me nervous and definitely wasn't a good look next time take the baby to an office area or to an empty table if u must jump in and help your staff out. The waitress was super busy we decided to order everything at once because she had so many tables so we hand our drinks and appetizers the appetizers were good a little heavy hand on the sugar with the deviled eggs and the candy yams were very candied lol as well but the food was fresh and hot when it came out. The reason why I didn't give the full 5 stars is because they force a 20% gratuity on the bill automatically at the service wasn't good. It doesn't matter how large or small the party is. We only saw the waiter once to grab our orders, a different person brought our food to the table, a different person brought us To-go containers and a different person cleaned our table.
