Chicken fajitas first, then enchiladas suizas tonight. The chicken is a bit dry, but can be fixed with the free salsa they provide. Ordered thru Grubhub and it was no problem switching the rice for beans (their refried beans are worth the carbs). Order was ready early and they are taking COVID precautions. Love the picked onions, radishes and pico they serve with the enchiladas. Looking forward to trying more from their menu. read more

Upon moving halfway across the country with my partner, this restaurant was the very first place we ate at and, since then, have probably gone back half a dozen times, dragging friends and family with us so they can experience one of the best margaritas we've ever had. As a vegetarian there are a decent amount of options and I highly recommend the Brussels sprout tacos or the Gouda Mac n cheese they have as an appetizer. If Bobby Flay were to come to town and ask me what restaurant I think he'd like, I would point him here. It reminds me somewhat of his Mesa Grill...the same philosophy of fresh and flavorful, and not afraid of bold spice. Having been a fan of both previous Jibarras, I was still excited to see the changes. Love the new menus! Last Sunday I was drooling over reviews and pics here on Yelp, and would have headed right over for dinner, but sadly, they are not open on Sunday nights. So we had to wait a whole week to go. Bring on Saturday lunch and we were off! (they are open for Sunday brunch though, we just couldn't get there that early that day.) The good thing about this sometimes busy part of downtown (warehouse district), is the free parking lot for the businesses in this particular building. First impression walking in to the changed restaurant was "oh wow, they really did change it up" (looking right to the bar area)...then looking left to the main dining room "this part looks the same to me". Have always loved it, so it's good to me. Extreme likes: the Market Chile Relleno...do know that the lentils in this are mushed up into the filling so if you have a lentil-phob amongst you (see Husband), even they can like this. Love the crispy breaded exterior, the creamy interior and the flavorful tomato sauce. This was served with wonderfully spicy collards and onions on top of some non-greasy yucca fries. Winner of a dish! Continuing the Likes: Husband got Enchiladas del Mar that came with a cup of rice. This is blackened shrimp and spinach with a fantastic tomatillo sauce, with slices of radish on top. I was so stealing bites of this. The shrimp and spinach in them are perfectly kicked up and the sauce was awesome. Amazingly (having been to the gym earlier) we were actually up for dessert. Our Server suggested the Tres Leches with what the menu described as habanero strawberry sauce. This was served in a jar. Husband really like this. Me, not so much. It reminded me of cottage cheese, and there was nothing that resembled habanero anything. He loved it and said it reminded him of strawberry shortcake. Another like for me was the Sangria, although it leaned toward a bit too sweet, and a personal preference for me is more fruit. There was one orange slice and a wedge of lime. It had a nice kick to it though. Small dislikes: Water is served with no ice. However, you can remedy that easily. Ask for ice. sigh...life can be so simple sometimes, huh? Service...nice and friendly, but (how do I put this?) lacking in a bit of refinement maybe? Was more of an issue for Husband then me. If you aren't ready for your plate to be cleared, just say so. (I saved his). Small things like that. Do know that if you go for Saturday lunch it is the dinner menu that is served, so price-wise, it's dinner prices. Our favorite! The ACP is our go to and we're a big fan of the salsa. My boyfriend and I typically share the dinner size ACP, salsa & chips and tortillas to go and it's plenty to share. Oh, Jose & Sons, you've really been letting me down lately. I still love most of the food, but I equally value the experience I have here... and I must admit it's been lacking in quality & the service has gone down hill. This isn't to say I don't still come here once a month, but it's not at the top of my list anymore. Here's why: Overall, the quality of the food has decreased. Now, it's still delicious, but you can tell they're cutting corners in places. For example, the barbacoa used to be slow roasted and oh so savory, but now it's just kinda dry - and the portion is so much smaller than before. I still loooove the chips & salsa, but sometimes they water it down a little bit too much. And for the beer- if you're going to pour 8oz pours because it's 7.5% ABV, you should indicate that on your menu... that's not very high gravity, but $6 for an 8oz pour of Bear Republic is freaking expensive- I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it was going to be so little. Buh. Jose & Sons, I'll still love you because you were one of my first loves in DTR, but my loyalty isn't as strong.... pleeeeez step it up & I'll be back weekly :) I'm hopeful! read more

I have been to Jose and Sons a few times now since it changed from Jibarra and I love it! The restaurant was packed but luckily my boyfriend and I found 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was bubbly, enthusiastic and extremely helpful. We started off with 2 draft beers and the Pimento Cheese Tostones. Hands down my favorite appetizer, plantains topped with pimento cheese and bacon how could you go wrong?! This time for entrees, I wanted to try something new so we ordered the Collard-Wrapped Tamales and Market Chile Relleno. The Collard-Wrapped Tamales were good but not something that I would get again but the Chile Relleno was DELICIOUS! I really wanted a Spicy Grilled Pineapple Margarita to enjoy with my meal! I am not sure who the gentleman was helping behind the bar, maybe the manager, but he took my order and I never saw the drink so I was very disappointed about that. Overall, this place is always great. If you have never been before, I recommend the Chicharron and Waffles which is served with 62 degree eggs that you get to crack and break over the pork belly and waffle. I also recommend the brunch! As a huge fan of the old Jibarra restaurant, it took me a while to warm up to Jose and Sons but so far, so good! The space has taken on a more rustic twist along with the menu. Mexican plus Southern basics like shrimp and grits, waffles and more. I've been here several times for brunch, dinner, drinks and even a Yelp event and the place does it all pretty well. My favorite dish so far has been a chicarrones appetizer with tortillas along with some seafood ceviche. All very flavorful and tasty choices. And while prices have gone up a bit since Jibarra, they are still reasonable for the portion size. And the service is as solid as usual. So rock on Jose and Sons! First Impression Review: Dined at Jose and Sons last night for the first time. Arrived about 8:30pm on a Friday and night and a table for two was open so we were seated immediately. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very inviting and appeals graphically. Our server was attentive but wasn't talkative about the menu or the restaurant, since it was our first time, it would have been nice to have a more involved waitress. We both ordered a house margarita which was delicious, a wonderful blend of tequila that is topped of with lots of citrus, they balance it nicely without making it too sweet. We started our meal with two appetizers, the bowl of chicken tortilla soup and corn on the cob. I should mention that I am from Oklahoma and am use to "Tex-Mex" flavors, Jose and Sons blew those flavors out of the water. Instead of a cheesy/sour cream filled tortilla soup, it was spicy with a refreshing citrus hint, avocado and a couple whole corn chips. The grilled corn on the cob was phenomenal (NOTE: probably not a good 'first date' appetizer), topped with a cheddar cheese crumble and a spicy 'mayo' spread, it was corn as I'd never tasted and the flavors were fantastic. The corn could've been heated a tad longer, I think it would've just given it that extra boost with the all the amazing flavors. For our entree we ordered collard-wrapped tamales and once again the dish was so much better then I could've expected (two tamales per dish, this meal was EASILY shared). The masa covering the tamales had a wonderful texture (not to think or dry), and the collard gave it a southern kick--the chef that designed the menu needs some definite kudos! The black beans covered with a bed of collards were fantastic in themselves and compliments the tamales so much I don't think I can ever go back to plain old rice and beans. I want to eat this meal once a week, but at the same time I can't wait to see what other flavors Jose and Sons has to offer. We stopped by Tasty Beverage following dinner for a late night brew and chatted up a Chef that was having a beer, it turned out it was Oscar, Jose and Sons own, we were so lucky to be able to pick his brain and share about our fantastic experience, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I could tell how passionate Oscar was about the flavors he is creating in the kitchen and love that he uses the freshest ingredients and prepares so much of the food in house. Exceptional Mexican food, and I am from Arizona and go to Mexico 3-4 times a year so I have found it hard to enjoy Mexican cuisine in North Carolina...but I have been to Jose and Sons 3 times now and I thought I ought to give them a review. This time I went I had the Chile Relleno and it came with a Brussels spout salad behind it. The chile was stuffed with a ricotta cheese mixture and yummy things...well I polished off my plate. 2 friends ordered the Enchiladas and also polished off their plates! I also had the flan for dessert and it was delicious!! I love flan and this was up there in taste! It came with a berry whip cream relish on the side that was yummy! Mexican meets southern in this little hidden gem. Diner Menu has small plates & full plates. The small plate was plenty though. Salsa was fresh and tasty. Wife ordered the Crank Arm Barbacoa. Beer braised brisket with tomatillo salsa, avocado, cilantro, and red onions comes with local fresh tortillas. I ordered the chicharron small plat came with guacamole. Both dishes were amazing and heavenly. Do yourself a favor and order a Street Vendor Corn on the cob to go with your meal. This addition will transport you to a street corner corn cart in Mexico & you will almost forget your in Raleigh North Carolina. We ended the night with the chocolate churros. We definitely suspect that the chocolate sauce was made with the Abuelita hot chocolate. It was sinfully satisfying. The coffee we ordered was served in French press that put us over the top in satisfaction. This also paired nicely with the dessert. Do not pass this place up. You will not be disappointed. Long travel day and we were tired. Sat at the bar, enjoyed a great serrano chili and strawberry cocktail called "Lost in Translation" while the hubby consumed one IPA after another. I cannot comment on the food, but every plate we saw coming out looked fantastic and the serving sizes were huge. Chips and salsa were delicious though as we did have those. Unfortunately, fortunately they have no blender and I'm a fan of a nice cold frozen margarita, but no such animal here. All their mixes are made in house though, and definitely high quality that you can taste! Bartenders are goofy and friendly and instantly make you feel comfortable and relaxed. Came to Jose and Sons for an anniversary meal, and I'm so glad I did! The food, atmosphere, and service were terrific. The food: We got the chef's picnic, which is intended to serve 2 people. It comes with so much meat and sides: a skirt steak, chicken, 2 pork chops, 2 corn on the cob, rice, black beans, kale, zucchini, and tortillas. I asked for a medium-rare steak, and that's exactly what we received. Flavorful and tender. We were surprised that the chicken was also very tender. The one disappointment was the pork chops which were dry. But I think that's inherent to the dish. My favorite of the sides was the corn smothered in mayo, queso fresco, chile piquin, and cilantro. This really take the dish to another level. Complimentary salsa and chips were so fresh. Also beautiful presentation on the board, layout, and braided corn husks. Way to go! The atmosphere: It's a very large space, between casual and formal. Definitely very well decorated. The bar area is at the center, which is a cool design. There were booths for 2 along the wall. Can accommodate several parties 6-8 easily. The service: Attentive, but not overbearingly so. I liked how she explained everything that is in the Chef's picnic after it was served. Went looking for a place to get a good breakfast which wasn't too crowded, and stopped here on a whim. Randomly ordered the "Steak and Egg Sammy" and I believe quite literally my life was altered. First a disclaimer: it is a sandwich, you do NOT get to eat some guy named "Sammy." This sandwich is incredible in every sense of the word. You're probably thinking "ok D calm the heck down, it's JUST a sandwich." Is the Mona Lisa JUST a painting? Was Michael Jordan JUST a basketball player? Okay, this place is memorable. I was in town for my cousin's birthday, so a bunch of us went on a bar crawl. This was the fourth stop and we wanted to snack a little. We grabbed an area in the corner which sported a couch, a few comfy chairs and a table in the center. Jose and sons is great! I work down the street from the restaurant so my co workers and I hit this place for lunch or for happy hour. Parking in this area sucks. There's only one lot in front of the restaurant that is always full after 5 but you can park on the street or on the nearby parking decks for a fee. The restaurant itself is big, with a large bar in the middle, private seating, and outdoor seating. The food here is delicious, I've never had anything that I didn't like. I suggest trying their skillet Mac and cheese (yes Mac and cheese in a Mexican restaurant) - it's the best I've ever had. Try their chicharrón & waffles and their street corn. If quesadilla are on the menu, then I suggest getting them as well. The downside to their menu is that it is rotated throughout the year so don't get too attached to it. The one thing that doesn't change is their margaritas. They have some of the best margaritas in the game here! If you don't like something on their drink menu, they'll make it for you no problem. The staff is always really nice here. The waitresses always suggest dishes. Also, make sure to ask for chips & Salsa, it's per request only. Last night we had a fantastic time at Jose and sons. I was looking for a restaurant near the Red Hat amphitheater on Yelp and I saw some good reviews for Jose and sons and a friend who lived in the area recommended them. We got there shortly after it opened so we got a table right away which was awesome. Our waitress was really nice and informative about everything on the menu. We got regular margaritas at a specialty watermelon margarita that was so pretty and delicious. I ordered the floutas and they were absolutely amazing! I could've eaten 20! My husband got the beet salad and really enjoyed it. All the food and drinks were great! I loved the decor and being close enough to walk to the concert was a major bonus! We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area, there was a lot more on the menu that we wanted to try!! read more

I love everything about this place. The ambience is great and so is the service. They take online reservations so check those if you're trying to come in last minute. The parking situation here sucks. They share a lot with other businesses and it's almost impossible to find a spot on the weekends. The lot is also being monitored by an attendant and you have to pay if you want to go to any other businesses besides the ones that share the lot. Whenever I go here, my friends and I order the Chef's picnic. For $50 you get a huge platter of meats, veggies, and tortillas and everything is really good. They also give you complimentary chips and salsa while you wait for your food, which is really nice. I've tried their house margarita here and it was pretty good but strong. read more

The menu is short but sweet, my girlfriend and I shared a few small plates. I was pleasantly surprised to find they had elote on the menu, this is what they referred to as Mexican street corn. Regardless what you call it, it is delicious and you should do yourself a favor and order some. The barbacoa was delicious and full of flavor. The location is great as well, down in the warehouse district of Raleigh. I might come back just for those, but... the blender is right in the middle of the bar. A relatively quiet quiet lunch was a constant loud blender. I couldn't think. Next, I ordered the Ahi tacos. I just didn't like them. The ahi was flavorful enough, but overcooked. The kale was too overpowering. I ended up eating it with a fork because it was hard to pick up & the kale was ruining the taco. I had the spicy grilled pineapple marg and some fresh chips and guacamole to start. I ended up getting a couple apps as my entree including the Gouda Mac and cheese with shrimp and the pimento and pork belly bites. The Gouda Mac is seriously rich and I probably could have just ordered that sans pimento (they weren't my favorite). I'm giving one less star for the fact that they ran out of cucumber and clams and didn't tell me until after I had already decided on a cocktail and the clams app. Back to square one with deciding what to order. Chips and salsa were fresh, warm, and best of all complementary! The server was very kind and attentive. Menu offers several selections some of which have some local flare but others that are more Tex-mex influenced. I had the shrimp and grits. Loved every bit of it. Me and my friend split the churros for dessert they were also quite tasty. I left very satisfied and will return. I think I like Gonza a little better, but this is still a good option. Love love love Jose and sons. This place has a fun menu of mexican/southern cuisine, along with yummy and creative cocktails. Brunch is my favorite to do here, since there's plenty of breakfast dishes, as well as good margaritas. All of their drinks are made with the freshest ingredients, so no need to worry about mixers filled with preservatives. I would advice ordering the shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, or tacos. In the evenings, you can order from the tapas menu, where you'll find everything from brussel sprouts to queso mac & cheese. Also, if you're into hot sauce, ask for a selection from them. They have some really hot options! The service has been the only thing that seems to be lacking at times. I don't mean the servers themselves, they're all wonderful (shout-out to Joshua!). But it does seem like the restaurant is a bit understaffed at times and I've had to wait a long time for the server to come back.
