Used to love Jose Tequila's before the pandemic. Idk what's happened since then. My first time going post-pandemic was yesterday and it was terrible. The service wasn't super bad, but my food and drink were. Ambiance was okay, a little loud (music, not people) but that didn't bother me. I was surprised that my entire order was messed up bc it wasn't very busy, and I went/sat by myself so there was only one order to get right... Anywho, first hiccup was when I ordered a Guava Margarita. I was brought a Banana Margarita. I've literally never heard of anything like that and was wondering what the disgustingness was that I was drinking (sorry if you like banana flavored stuff but I seriously do not). I knew it wasn't Guava at this point so I continued to drink it until I realized: yeah, this is Banana, and this sh*t is nasty. Next, I ordered the Birria Tacos. It came with rice, beans, consome, and two ridiculously huge slightly burnt tacos. The rice and beans were good and the consome but that's it. Usually birria tacos are no larger than my hand. One taco was the size of two hands (I literally rolled it up and ate it like a burrito as the meat fell out simultaneously). The meat inside was dry and clumped together, not really tender pull-apart like regular birria tacos. There's juicier meat at Chipotle. The tortillas were soggy and the cheese that was fried on the outsides of them was 5 seconds from burnt. 0 out of 10. I asked my server why the tortillas and tacos as a whole were like this. The manager came over and explained to me that they ordered new tortillas and they're just very large.. so idk. I just asked for a box after that bc I had to get out of there. For $17 two large dry tacos... I wrote on the check that I asked for a Guava Margarita when I saw that I was in fact rung up and brought a Banana Margarita. I also circled the drink order for emphasis. Not once did anyone apologize for the terrible meal and drink mixup I had.. most of the workers involved just talked about it amongst themselves a few feet away from me. I don't like to leave bad reviews, but at the same time, they should know they need to get it together because I used to LOVE Jose Tequilas and only came to this exact location! So disappointed. I definitely did not eat my taco leftovers but still enjoyed the rice. More than likely not going to this location anymore, it is about 20-25 mins from me w/o traffic and I had to drive through the tunnel/toll just to not eat my food and end up at a bar eating wings. I came here with a party of 7 on a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised to be seated right away, considering it was PACKED! Our waitress came pretty quickly to get our drink orders. I got a frozen margarita. It was very good! I ordered the chimichanga platter. Fried with chicken. Amazing!! The queso drizzled on top was delicious. It came with rice and beans and crema salad. This has been my go-to Mexican restaurant since I moved to Hampton Roads 7 years ago. Because of covid, I had not been for quite sometime (about 8 months, I believe). I went today around 4pm after a rough day at work, and for the first time I was extremely disappointed. I ordered a small frozen margarita and the fajita special (marked at $13.99 on the board). Service was great and accurate, food and drinks were great - but: 1. The margarita was $11. 2. The fajitas were rang up $17.99. 3. Jose Tequilas is a very exposed building, on a busy road. We were surprised it was so cool and dark inside, in contrast to the horrible July humidity and heat. The place was dead for lunch on a Wednesday. We were passing through town. We just wanted something quick before getting back on the road. Good choice. Everything is huge. Portions, margaritas, soda cups, water cups - they don't fool around. I ordered a steak plate that came with veggies and a chile relleno. It was tasty but too much. Could have shared with a second person. The strangest thing was the weird ranch type dressing that came along with the salsa. It was awful, but I guess a local thing? Our waiter was very attentive. The dining room was huge too, with dark decor but the highlight was the tequila bottles at the front door. I will say that I'm not a big fan of chain Mexican restaurants as the foos tends to not be authentic. However, my go to plate is the carne asada fries here and they never disappoint. Everything is seasoned to perfection and their horchata is pretty good as well. My son always orders their chicken quesadilla which is very tasty. I have ordered quite a few items off their menu and can say I have only been disappointed once and that was with their ceviche. It tasted more like a cocktail (I could taste the cocktail sauce). My fellow Yelpers, I have another confession. I've lived in Norfolk for nearly three years now (a lifelong resident of Hampton), and I have never had Jose Tequilas until this past weekend. Boy, was I missing out! I don't really have a lot of cravings for Mexican food, but every now and then, you're body NEEDS it! Seriously, the spice, the flavor, the color, the comfort - Mexican food is a necessity! I now know that and will never devalue the role of this great culture in my life again (cue the theatrics). But, honestly this place is really good with a lot of yummy options to satisfy any palate. From meat lovers, to seafood, and vegetarian and vegan, Jose Tequilas has it all. I ordered the avocado enchilada, agua frescas (mango), and the flan. For starters, the enchilada was so divine. The mushrooms and spinach were sauteed to perfection and the fresh avocado really helped to make it a hearty selection. I love the black beans and rice that came with it as well. If you've ever had island or exotic cuisine (Latin, African, Caribbean), then you know that mango juice is a tasty, refreshing beverage that will make your heart and tummy smile, and that's exactly what the agua frescas did for me. In addition, the flan was lightweight, soft, and sweet - the perfect combination and correct taste of this classic, Spanish dessert. We had a large party of about 25 people, of whom were separated between 9 different bills. We even had people who were on the same check but were sitting at different tables. Our service was on point, efficient, friendly and even funny. Every bill was correct at the end of dinner. That in and of itself was a huge feat. The food was DELICIOUS and portions were large!!! I was really finding a saving grace to this place with their Irish Nachos; however, the last experience I had here left a bad taste in my mouth (figuratively and literally). My brother and I arrived and ordered drinks while waiting for our parents to meet us. I said that I wanted an Arnold Palmer more specifically half lemonade and iced tea. Our server asked me if I wanted sweet or unsweet, and I requested sweet. When the server came back to the table I politely informed him that the drink was wrong, and that I wanted my drink like my mother's. He took it back to fix it. My dad said that he saw the man dump out half the glass and put lemonade in it, which was still incorrect. At this point, I just wanted a water, so I asked the server to switch out my drink, and he demandingly scrunched up his face and asked why. I wasn't a fan of his demeanor, so all I said in response was "I'd just like a water please." Then he said under his breath and looking down, "Well you're still getting charged for the iced tea then." Now see this is when I almost became Mr. Burton and let him have it, because if you're going to be rude and try me look me in the face and be direct. I said "Excuse Me! ..." and before I could say another word my dad explained to him what was wrong with my drink and offered to pay for my meal because I was ready to get up and leave. As for the food, the chips were stale, and the salsa and white sauce was nasty, so I skipped those as usual. From my previous reviews, you can see that all I tolerate here are the french fry based meals, so I decided to try their carne asada fries. They were medicore, and made my stomach hurt later. My mother was also brought the wrong meal, and she was pretty displeased as well. This was just an overall bad experience through and through. As for if I'll ever come back I never say never, but ... The restaurant has very subpar customer service. Upon arrival to the restaurant, my husband gave them his name and the telephone number that the order should have been placed under. Instead of actually looking, the employees gave him a hard time, laughed at him, and told him that they did not have his order before kicking him out the restaurant. It took me to call and suggest cancelling the order for them to magically find it and say that it was already completed. Once my husband went back to the restaurant, the employees were laughing as if their mistake was amusing. Messing with peoples' time and money is definitely not a game. The food itself is not something worth going through all this trouble for. I should have just cancelled the order and gotten my money back. It just seemed like everything was extra wet, from the burritos to the rice. It probably would have been better if eaten immediately but as far as takeout, be prepared for your food to be soggy. Less than 3 weeks ago, my sweet husband insisted on us trying this Jose Tequilas place on little creek road in Norfolk virginia via Grubhub and I willingly agreed because my husband also paid for the meal. The food items ordered include: Carne Asada street tacos, queso fundido, chimichangas and the Jose Tequilas happy sampler which includes wings quesadillas taquitos elotes. The pros: the food was delivered in a timely manner by the driver and the order included a generous amount of food. However, both my husband and I agreed that the food was just ok the queso could have had more seasonings and been made thicker some of the stuff I chose to eat from the happy sampler tasted different from what I expected however the carne asada tacos were at least palpable/edible (my husband had the chimichangas). read more
