Guads at Granby has become my go-to place anytime I am in Norfolk. My first visit, we had Tatiana as our waitress, and have been fortunate to have her almost every time since. She remembered my order just after a couple of visits, always has a smile, and is so kind and fun to talk with. The food is extremely delicious and the portions are very generous. Each time Ive come back, Ive brought friends and family for their first time and they have also added Guads to their go-to list. Those who have ordered alcoholic drinks, have raved about the flavor. In addition to Tatiana and the quality food; every other worker is extremely friendly, with one gentleman who carries out the food on his full length of his arms, and even dances as he does nightly clean up. DON'T!!!! If I could rate lower, I would. The margerita was not good, asked for a tweak. I have had good marg's there before. However, the bartender got a major attitude and charged me extra for a shot of tequila. I am not a person who asks for more, but a decent drink that does not taste like straight sour mix???!!! Then I ordered a chimichanga dinner and it was soft, not fried. Not my first rodeo, I assure you. We have lived right around the corner fron Guad's for several years, and popped in tonight on a whim in need of an easy last minute dinner option. I didn't have high expectations but we had a wonderful experience. All staff members we interacted with were SO nice, and so sweet interacting with our son. The food was also pretty solid. I got the California Burrito with steak, and while I'm certainly no expert in either burritos or Mexican food in general, I really enjoyed it. The steak was tender and there was a ton of flavor between the fillings and the queso/red sauce on top. We ordered the kids plate with a beef quesadilla for my son, which he enjoyed when he took a long enough pause from the chips and queso haha. We could not figure out how the bill for our whole family was under $40, but I've since discovered that kids eat free on Thursdays! The kids plate wasn't expensive to start with, but that's a major draw that will definitely have us back again. The restaurant is pretty large and seems like they could easily accomodate a larger party. It's pretty no-frills inside, but that doesn't really matter for a solid neighborhood spot. I ordered carnitas and it should've came with the lettuce salad, rice and beans. I also mentioned in the instructions to substitute the beans for a rice cuz I just do can't with the beans. But obviously they didn't deliver. They have impeccable service when you eat in their restaurant but they need to care more for the takeout so people like us will get what we paid for and not be disappointed. read more

The place is very cute and welcoming when you walk inside. Service from quick, staff very friendly and quick. My daughter and I ordered the steak nachos to share and the meat and flavor was yummy. We added the lettuce tomatoes at cream and guacamole on the side only suggestion is to not be so heavy handed with the lettuce it drowns out the flavor of everything else. Stopped in for lunch and was seated and served quickly and by a very pleasant staff. Ordered a Modelo Michelada off the menu and the bartender knew just how to whip a great one up, forewarning me that she tended to make them spicier than most - fine by me. Portion wise, the Steak Mexicano at $12.99 was decent bang for the buck however the meat itself was pretty fatty..ended up cutting away about a 1/6 of it that would have made the difference between feeling genuinely satisfied at the end and having to keep munching on tortilla chips after finishing my entree. Overall, didn't really leave with any lasting positive impression...but no lasting negative impressions either. I'll probably try exploring other Mexican places in the area before coming back to Guads but it certainly isn't off my list yet. read more

My initial review with an update pending future visits. Popped in for some $1 tacos as recommended by my Starbucks barista. No waiting to be seated during lunch and the people working were courteous and helpful. Parking is along the busy street and you'll have to signal early to avoid a tailgater from rear-ending you. When exiting the lot, pay attention to the signal light to maneuver quickly to avoid being cut off or even running the light. The bathroom was clean but so small like an overseas water closet. For the price paid, the chicken and beef taco filled the void. I did however enjoy the chips, salsa and sauce provided while waiting on my order. Went to guads, always passed it and wanted to check it out. Service was good. Ordered the El Diablo Margarita and it was not very spicy and tasted watered down. The food was cold when it arrived and I asked for it to be re heated. Even when eating it I wasn't impressed but it's pretty standard, didn't feel authentic. The service was okay but could've been better. We needed more salsa/dip, hot sauce, and another drink but the check ups were minimal. Atmosphere was fine and everyone was nice. The rise was mushy the Black beans were hard and a lot fell out in the bag because even though I down over $50 they put all the items 6 plus of those in little cheap containers with the aluminum and paper too that's doesn't hold up to black beans and black beans sauce maybe the rice or the guacamole. Then they put 6 of those same cheap container all in one cheap flimsy plastic bag. We live nearby, yet this was our first visit because honestly, I thought it was just like any other Mexican joint. Boy was I wrong!! There's just a freshness about the food that you definitely don't find at the Plazas, Hogars, Casitas, etc. etc. We were greeted by our friendly server as soon as we walked in. The salsa should have clued me in that this would be just a cut above the other places, as it tasted super fresh - chunks of tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Yummy! Hubby ordered the Mexican Burrito with steak. Now he's a rare steak eater - he likes it practically mooing, this was cooked more than his liking (of course), but he really enjoyed it and said it was really tender. I had the enchilada combo (cheese) which came with rice and beans. I can't believe I am commenting about the rice and beans in a Mexican place, because usually it's all the same, but I'm going to. The rice was fluffy and flavorful, as were the beans (chunks of beans!). You can tell these sides haven't been sitting around for days! I also had the guacamole salad (I like to put it on top of my enchiladas - don't judge) and it was wonderfully fresh! Instead of the standard shredded lettuce, slice of tomato and a scoop of generic quac, it came with this wonderful pico! The key word here is FRESH. My wife and I were frequenting Guad's twice a week mostly because of the service from the two best waitresses in town. We were spending roughly $600+ a month and were very satisfied with the food and the friendly kind of local atmosphere. The bartenders and customers seem to be very nice. One evening we were sitting at the bar as we usually do and were eating dinner having drinks. I bit into my chicken Pollo Fundido and felt a sharp pinch in my mouth. I thought it may have been a chicken bone, but to my surprise it was a stationary staple. I brought it to the attention of the bartender and the manager and when I showed it to him, he took it from me and said he would look into it. Nothing was done after that. Five days later, my wife and I visited Guad's and sat at the bar enjoying our regular evening out. After we ate, my wife and I questioned the manager about the incident with the staple. He said he got upset with my wife for bringing it to the bar tenders' attention and was going to give us a shot or something but decided not to. My wife was very offended, and I was upset also thinking what consequences could have happened if I had swallowed a staple. That being said, wife and I have decided with the hundreds of other places to eat in Norfolk we can go elsewhere. Funny thing about money, it spends everywhere. I LOVE Guads! Their queso fundito appetizer (queso with chorizo) is so delicious. Their higher priced margaritas are good, the small house margarita is ok. The one I got tasted more like sweet and sour, but not horrible. I would suggest the penthouse margarita, a little pricy... so I only had 1. All of the food is delicious. The service is prompt and everyone is very friendly. I recommend checking it out for some good Mexican cuisine! Oh and we didnt get the guacamole but they make it fresh at your table!! A Mexican restaurant in the Wards Corner area. A coworker recommended it for lunch so here we go with the review. My initial thought about the menu is a little more choices than your average Mexican restaurants and it was a bit pricier too! They have a lot of seafood items which was surprising for me. But the owner said in their country they are very big in seafood. So did I try out their seafood items? Of course not, I wanted the rice and beans! Order Chicken nachos, rice, and bean-cheese dip.
