After some bad experiences with opthalmologists I highly dislike most medical professionals since they don't have the knowledge to help me or are driven by profit rather than the desire to help people. Dr Hwang is outstanding dentist and gets a 5 star. I am only leaving a 4 stars due to front desk staff that and billing. Front desk person did not explain billing well and on one of my visits quoted a very large bill which was not detailed. After contacting the dentist, we adjusted the bill to a reasonable amount. Fantastic care! I started bringing my toddler to Dr. Lee's office since November 2022 and we love it here. Not only is the office clean, friendly and comfortable to be in, all the staff members we've interacted with were very kind and professional. Dr. Kelly Hwang & Dr. Katherine Chen were especially patient with my child when examining his teeth (imagine the difficulty examining a crying toddler). They answered all my questions and provided a lot of education which I really appreciate as a (new-ish) mom. So far we are able to always reach a staff member whenever we call. The text and email reminders for appointments are also much appreciated. I'd recommend this dental practice to all my friends and family who are looking for a new dental provider. read more

I have not been to the dentist in almost 10 years due to extreme fear. I recently had to get 2 teeth removed because of pain. Dr.Lee made sure I was comfortable and felt the least pain. Best dentist and office I've ever experienced. Everyone is attentive and gentle while you're in the chair under the lights, and Dr. Lee is contentious and honest, qualities I very much appreciate. I had a mouthful of degrading teeth, and had to get a filling and root canal and crown ASAP. Their office was understanding when I had to wait a long time for insurance reasons before I could complete the crown procedure. Even with such a long break between my temporary crown and the affixing of my permanent crown, Dr. Lee was patient, careful and thorough in ensuring that everything would fit well and be comfortable for me. I don't rave about health care practitioners often, but I am recommending Dr. Lee to all of my colleagues and friends in the area. A dentist who cares enough to wait and tweak things for the sake of their patients' well-being and financial situation is a dentist worth celebrating! Not to mention their staff and hygienists have great bedside manner, doing their best to make you comfortable, taking care of your drool before it gets out of hand (or mouth) :P, and placing their tools and hands in ways that don't leave you with cold metal and spit all over your face - much appreciated! Just make sure to wear pants and a jacket to your visit if you're sensitive to cold - it gets a bit chilly during long procedures, even with the blankets they nicely provide for you. Their front desk was also pleasant, and the ladies were willing to help me look up insurance information, so I could make informed decisions about my dental health. My wife and I visited Dr. Lee's dental office on Wednesday and we were not quite satisfied with our experience here. Initially, we asked if we could both see Dr. Lee himself for discussing our examination and treatment. They kept saying that they cannot do that because it wasn't arranged like that. After a long discussion and agreeing to the plan, though, Dr. Lee seemed rushed throughout the discussion with my wife, and constantly asked if she could speed up the process since he did not have much time. What I'm most unhappy about is that, for some reason, he treated me first, and spent a long time, while my wife was sitting alone in the treatment room with no one attending to her for 40 minutes! This is very unprofessional. The fact that he rushed through the discussion with my wife and prevented her from asking more questions is very irresponsible and rude. My wife and I had equally important conditions and we deserve the same level of treatment, but I feel that they did not spent the same amount of time or attention on my wife, and they were rushing her. As first-time patients, we did not feel like we were cared for or had time to go through our dental conditions in detail. And we've never had any dentist who told patients to stop asking during the middle of the conversation. Furthermore, when we were taking X-rays for our teeth, our hygienists were not very gentle and pushed our mouth/teeth rather hard. Some hygienists also had accents which we felt a bit difficult to understand. We would not regard this place as a friendly dentistry to visit. read more

I recently had three wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Lee and he did wonderful job with the whole process. Since I have a size of a 5 yr old girl's mouth, every time I go to dentist, its totally pain in the butt but Dr. Lee did great job with my teeth. I only did local anesthetic and extracted all three! It took a while because he had to adjust his view and to hold my opened mouth but in general it was good. I took ibuprofen and Vicodin for few days and whole bunch of ice cream for few weeks but it swell down well. and I look the same! Like Mike J, who wrote below, I think his fees' are very very very reasonable. I got very reasonable price, even with insurance. and Had great quality service with Dr. Lee and his staff. his staffs are amazing too! If you are looking for the best dental team in all of Silicon Valley, Dr. Joseph Lee and his staff might very well be it. A high level of expertise and extremely modern equipment is what his practice exemplifies. Before coming to Dr. Lee's office, my teeth needed a LOT of work after years of neglect. I had to do a routine cleaning, deep cleaning, and replacement of fifteen aging silver fillings with white fillings. I don't have insurance, so I have to pay everything out of my own pocket. With potentially having to spend thousands of dollars, I wanted to find the best dentist in Silicon Valley. Mountain View Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has some of the warmest staff members of any dentistry I've been to. As you enter the office you are immediately greeted and I have never waited long in the waiting room before being seen. Dr. Lee is very friendly, professional, and cares about your overall orthodontic wellness and places emphasis on preventive dental hygiene and building habits that can improve your quality of life. Very early on, Dr. Lee identified signs overnight teeth grinding, which my wife mentioned a few times but I never took serious notice. He educated me on the potential impact of teeth grinding and sleep apnea, and recommended several paths to improving my sleep quality. I also got an implant done during my time as a patient and Dr. Lee took the care to ensure precise measurements and fitness of the tooth. The fitting was very well done and within a week of getting the new implant I felt like I had my natural tooth back. The tooth was perfectly aligned and never had excess pressure on the surrounding teeth. In addition to the expert treatments, the appointment reminder system and the responsiveness of the staff either via Email, Phone or Text made it effortless to reschedule appointments, inquire about insurance, and request documentations. Brought my 7 year old in and again received phenomenal service. The hygienist was so fun and informative. Tiffany truly showed care and concern for my son's teeth. I came into this clinic with a lot of issues related to TMJ such as jaw clicking, alignment of my jaw & headaches. Dr.Lee recommended to get a scan for a better understanding to the treatment. He had explained everything with regards to the different issues going on and the long term benefits of fixing my TMJ issues, alignment of my jaw & bite first and then orthodontics treatment. I'm surprised the reviews are so high for this dental office. After reviewing the negative, they all seem to align with my experience. Let me just tell you the facts (in order of priority): 1. I was charged $700 for my out of pocket expenses for a root canal. Later, I received a quote from my insurance saying my out of pocket was $200 less than what I had already paid. I called the office and asked for an itemized receipt. All the line items were completely off. I sent a scanned copy of my break down from insurance and they admitted they overcharged me. The front desk said they were to refund me $10 less than the difference. I then told them that they miscalculated. I then was sent a check for the actual amount after the back and forth. 2. I was told my root canal procedure would be two and a half hours. When I asked my friends, they said their procedure was close to an hour. The entire procedure turned out to be three and a half hours. 3. As stated by other reviews, the X-ray specialist took 7 tries to complete my X-ray. I started to gag after the 4th try. In my opinion, I definitely wouldn't say she had great customer service or had any regard for me being uncomfortable. 4. After my first visit, I was recommended for a root canal, 6 fillings, and a deep cleaning. I was also told that my gums have receded so much to a point of no return. I was horrified. I decided to go to a new dentist for my next yearly check up 6 months later after the billing issue. My new dentist says that the root canal was done poorly and I only had one filling with no deep cleaning recommendation. She also reassured me that at my age, my gums are at a normal state. Note: I met with Dr. Hwang. She was very nice but seemed to still be learning from Dr. Lee. My little interaction with Dr. Lee, he is definitely a professional. My only concerns is with the support staff (Front desk, Suzette and the X-ray Specialist, shorter Filipino lady). My recommendation is that if you enjoy your experience with Dr. Lee or Dr. Hwang, you should continue coming. Just meticulously double check the recommendations for procedures and what you are billed for accuracy. This is a revenue driven office, not service. read more

Due to a rare neurological disorder I have which causes chronic pain, I was extremely nervous about getting a root canal that I needed. Dr. Lee was extremely patient with me and attended to all of my unusual medical needs. He explained my options and listened carefully to my feedback. He truly listened to and paid attention to what I said and what I needed, something no other dentist has come close to doing as well. He was by far that most careful dentist I've ever had in being as cautious as possible not to cause me any unnecessary pain. I also was impressed with his technology for imaging the area the replacement crown would be put after the root canal was completed which did not require making a mold of my tooth, thus shortened the time the appointment took. I started seeing Dr. Lee after a series of misfortunate events that led to complications with a root canal (I had two filling re-done, which went too close to the nerve leading to two root canals). The root canal left me with tremendous pain for months. The x-rays post root canal all suggested that there was no infection with the root canal. But after seeing the specialist a few times, she told me that she can do it if I want before my root canal warranty expires. My previous dentist also recommended re-doing the root canal from day ONE. I was fortunate enough to get a second opinion from Dr. Lee. He voted against it. He tried several alternatives to understand the root cause. Ultimately, when the one year warranty of my root canal was ending I asked for his advice and he said there is no evidence for an issue caused by the root canal. Some people have pain that is not understood. Papers have shown people who have pain, do a second root canal, continue to have pain, then extract the tooth and still have pain. So based on all the data he had from experiments with my teeth, research articles, and his experience, he didn't suggest it. I am tremendously grateful for his evidence-based approach since after the one year mark there was an appreciable reduction in the pain. It has mostly diminished now. I have been seeing him since and he takes a lot of care not to do unnecessary dental work but to carefully monitor changes in my teeth. I have an implant booked with him soon but I feel comfortable knowing I am in competent hands. read more

OUTSTANDING! Dr. Lee and his staff are beyond great. I always feel at home when I walk through the door and laugh with the staff throughout my visit. Invisalign: the entire process was painless. 12 months, 24 trays and I was done. I love the way my teeth turned out. Dr. Lee even did some awesome shaping to make them look perfect. He's very detail oriented, kind and genuinely a 'great guy'... They even worked with me on paying off the balance. VERY COOL! Teeth Whitening: they have a cutting edge process that makes your teeth look flawlessly white. It's affordable, fast and impactful. Highly suggest it vs. all the over the counter stuff or other painful processes. General Cleaning: easy, painless and they're on top of your oral care in a non pushy way. They do not suggest anything unless it's mandatory. Wisdom Teeth Pulled: I'm 45 years old. Anyone who know anything about pulling wisdom teeth when your older would know it can be an insanely painful process. Not for me..., I did a general numbing agent and the other Dr... forgot her name but, I loved her... she was awesome... yanked them right out. No infection, no issues. I have been a patient here for several years and have 3-4 cleanings a year to maintain healthy gums. I *really like* the hygienist and Dr. Hwang, both of whom have done cleanings over the year, and Dr. Hwang who did two more extensive procedures, including replacing a crown. Special features I appreciate: (1) Service is amazingly on-time. I've never waited more than 5 minutes--so no time to check out the selection of magazines in the waiting room! (2) The layout is private and clean, and the equipment is absolutely up-to-date. (3) Charges are reasonable--important as I have no dental insurance. read more

The staff were friendly and the facilities clean. They did a pretty good on my cleaning. The reason for the bad rating is that I went here with a $35 coupon for a cleaning, and was told I needed $2500 in dental work! I highly doubt I needed everything that he recommended especially since a good chunk of the recommended procedures were re-doing or upgrading things I had done in the past. I'm not saying it was all wrong but who tells a new customer they need 2500 in work on the first visit. Ill definitely get a second opinion before coming back. read more

I'm not sure what these other reviews here are based on, but if the review is not based on being a dentist or having gotten a second opinion, then how good can it be? This review is based on a second opinion I got. I came to Dr. Lee's office after going to a previous dentist that came highly recommended by other friends. The last time I went to the dentist (3 years ago) I had been given a clean bill of health. I only changed dentists because my health plan changed and this practice was "on the list" of the insurance provider. The assistant proceeded to do a full series of x-rays. Oddly, they didn't ASK if I had any previous x-rays they could refer to. This made me very uncomfortable. I was examined by the dentist and shown pictures. The dentist proceeded to tell me I needed work on my back four teeth based on black coloration in the grooves of my teeth and that my teeth showed evidence of grinding. The dental work would be covered by the insurance (perhaps 1 to 1.5k of work), and they recommended an 800 dollar custom mouthguard to prevent grinding at night which would not be covered by insurance. To have a clean set of teeth and then suddenly require extensive dental work at my age is unlikely. I therefore cancelled my follow up appointment with Dr. Lee and decided to go back to my old dentist for a second opinion. I asked Dr. Lee's assistant for my x-rays and forwarded them to my old dentist. My old dentist both checked the x-rays and examined me in person. She said that, in her opinion, all of the back teeth had staining, which is common, but no cavities except for a very small spot on one tooth. There was no evidence of any progression otherwise from my past visit. In addition, she said she saw no evidence of grinding and that while one tooth was a bit flat, the teeth in the back that meet would be ground down much flatter if I was grinding my teeth, indicating that the wear on that tooth may have occurred when I was much younger. Therefore, there was no evidence of recent problems. At best, Dr. Lee is extremely aggressive about treatment, and you should get a second opinion before getting any work done. At worst, well... let's just say I will never again switch dentists so lightly. read more

I came to Dr. Lee through a groupon for X-rays, exam, and cleaning. Dr. Lee was professional and I don't have any complaints about the way the exam was conducted--he seems competent and was friendly. The dental hygienist, however, was pretty awful. My gums are bruised all over from the x-ray exam because of the extremely ill-fitting mouth guards that she jammed into my mouth. At one point, she pulled the arm of the X-ray machine into my head and didn't seem to notice. When I was being prepped for cleaning, she tossed the suction tube basically down my throat and gagged me. During the cleaning, she pressed the suction tube so hard against my mouth that it cut my gum open (later she apologized). I'm glad others have had great service here, but I will not be back. read more

I originally came here about 8 months ago for a cleaning thanks to a Groupon deal, but I stuck around as a cash patient for awhile before coming back with dental insurance. :) Dr. Joe Lee and his staff are pretty great. They're very professional and friendly, and they make sure I know what's happening before it happens so I can feel calmer when they're working on me. On my last visit for a general cleaning, I warned them that I had a cankersore that was healing, and the assistant told me, "Oh, if you had come in last week, we could've taken care of that cankersore for you with our laser." OMG YOU CAN DO THAT WITH LASERS? Dr. Lee later explained that they would basically cauterize it with the laser so that the cankersore wouldn't be a problem anymore. At that point, it was already a week since I had it, so it was already healing well and didn't need the laser. Still, it's a good thing to know for next time. They were pretty careful and didn't prod my cankersore at all while they were cleaning my teeth. Anyway, I'll probably stick to Dr. Joe Lee for the long haul. :) read more

I got a root canal yesterday AND I'M PERFECTLY FINE TODAY. Is this a miracle or is Dr. Joseph Lee just really good at teeth? The rest of my experience was great here. They worked with me so that I could get the most out of my insurance this year (I had three cavities and a root canal... whoops!) and were very calming and reassuring when I got nervous about having dental work done (my first time getting any of my teeth drilled!). I initially went to see Dr. Lee in 2016 because I urgently needed dental work (a root canal and crown) and he seemed well reviewed on Yelp and participated in a dental discount plan I'd subscribed to to lower the cost. His staff were great, he explained everything thoroughly (I had already had an X-ray at another dentist and knew what was needed, so this was a second opinion), he did a nice job, all was good. So why the two stars? Because he then convinced me that I needed more crowns that I'm no longer sure I needed (I didn't have money to do everything he said I needed, but when I recently went to a different dentist, I found out that most of my pain is due to clenching and TMJ issues and I didn't need any more crowns). I also still have significant sensitivity at the site of one crown despite returning a couple of times to get it fixed. For a piece de resistance...I got a bill a month ago, two years after the work was done, for over $2000 I apparently still owe. I paid all the bills they presented to me in the office, I had not received a single bill until 2018, and it was certainly a shocking and unpleasant surprise. When I called to ask "WTF?", I received a vague "We had a lot of staff turnover, I don't know why they didn't have you pay the correct amount". Yeah, that helps make the huge unexpected bill go down better. Never again. read more

Been a patient here for about 2.5 years. I was originally a patient of Nipa Sheth but was a converted over to Dr. Lee when he bought the practice. So this review may be a little garbled as I jump back and forth between Dr.s. My general dentist doesn't do cosmetic work so I found Dr. Sheth on-line. As a platinum provider, litterally the cheapest invisaline in the Bay Area. That was during my pre-yelp days.... In general, couldn't be happier. The staff is great, Dr. Sheth and now Dr. Lee are great. He is very professional, walks you through each step of the process. I am well on my way to perfect teeth - or as good as I can get with the teeth I was given. So, my only ding (and not 5 stars) was about Invisaline itself. Since I can't yelp-review it here I will put it with the dentist that I went through to get it. While the experience with Invisaline has not been that bad. I work in sales, they are totally invisible, don't affect my speech too much, can be removed to eat etc. BUT, before you go in on these make sure to ask a couple of questions before you commit. I didn't (with Dr. Sheth) and had to 'learn the hard way' Make sure to ask about: Attachments - not always required but they attach these things that look like pieces of rice to your teeth (to aide in movement). If located on certain teeth people will always be telling you have food stuck in your teeth. Adjustments - this one was very disturbing to me. Since teeth cannot be pulled for Invisaline they need to 'shave' enamel from various teeth to create space. Again, not everyone has to do this but I was walking around various times with gaps all over my lower jaw... Floss anyone? Refinements - The first set of trays given to Dr/ Sheth had me with an estimated finish time of 9 months. When in 9 months my teeth were not fixed Dr. Sheth indicated they could do up to 3 refinements. That means another cycle of trays. Refinements can often be as long (or longer) than the original prescription. I am on my 3rd refinement now. 2.5 years later. just set your expectations right. Dr. Lee is great, I am sure he will answer your questions appropriately. read more

I have been so impressed with the quality of care, attention to details when it came to my oral health, the immediate calmness I felt around the staff and Dr. Lee himself (he's such an approachable guy, and the staff is always full of smiles; love it!), and the thoroughness in explanation of benefits with my insurance, and the procedures I had to partake in (shout-out to Suzette for this!) Unfortunately, I had to take my business elsewhere due to the drive I endured getting to the office. I will miss all of you at the office, and the great service you've provided me these past couple years. I have never had a better dentist. I had to have a lot of work done and my gums were very unhealthy due to poor dentistry I received in my younger years. Dr Lee did such a great job! The spacing between my fillings are perfect. Nothing gets stuck in my teeth anymore. My gums have become healthy again, and I couldn't be more happy with the service I received. His anesthesia skills are amazing. I really can't say enough good things about this place. Also, one of the dental hygienists recommended that I use CTx products. My teeth are always white now. I never have to whiten them. I feel like the people here really care about my quality of life. I plan to keep coming back until Dr Lee retires. Thanks again! read more

tltr: Ended up looking at losing a tooth Dr Hwang worked on; she didn't care to follow up with my email questions. Unfortunately I have to recommend you avoid Dr Hwang. About two years ago I had gone in with some tooth pain. After a year it was finally found to be a cavity. The process to get a filling was painful meaning she didn't numb the nerves quite right; compared to other dentists I have seen (And those I've seen for the same tooth since) this has never been the case. Secondly so much of the tooth was shaved off that the root was exposed so close to the filling. This caused constant pain. I had to see a different dentist for a second opinion on the pain and that's where their x-ray showed how close the root was so the surface of my tooth. I followed up with Dr Hwang via email on the pain and potential next steps but her e-mail showed her interest was clearly to defend her work or not being sued, nothing to do with my well being. I followed up with some questions but that email was ignored. I had to visit a different dentist that redid all of her work which reduced the pain. I was warned that since the root was so close that eventually I might need a root canal/extraction no matter what. And a year later that's exactly what I am facing. Regardless of fault, why would you want to see a Dentist that isn't interested in making sure that you the patient are cared for? Avoid. read more
