You have a few choices in Baraboo, Lake Delton, and Wisconsin Dells for decent Mexican food, but Jose's is in a field by itself. If you want the chain reataurant feel, find somewhere else to eat because Jose's isn't what you're after. If you're interested in eating where the locals eat, head on over... and prepare to wait in line during peak times. What Jose's offers is outstanding Mexican food at a very fair price. The staff is very friendly and genuinely seems happy to see you. Sometimes, when it gets very crowded, the service can be a bit slow. Keep in mind there's a small staff and, even with a slower pace, your food will be served piping hot and taste like a lot of care went into your meal. It is always fun to watch the birthday celebration. The staff comes out, guitar in hand, sings, and then there's a special something at the end. I won't ruin the surprise in case you, the reader, are on your way to celebrate yours. While off the beaten path of touristy areas up in the Dells, Jose's is very easy to get to and well worth the drive out. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. read more

For me the place was very typical Mexican restaurant lately. Like many I have reviewed lately, they definitely have a trend going for menu items and flavor. I'd say this one kinda disappointed based on similar restaurants but was still better than most typical restaurants to me. The refried beans were not as good as others and the Chile rellano was goofy and looked more like an omelette than a lightly battered one. The cheese in the enchilada wasn't great. The speed getting the food also seemed slower than other places that do the same thing. Bathrooms and decor were good and prices were fine. Second year visiting this restaurant. Service was AWFUL. Someone wordlessly plopped chips and salsa on our table and we didn't see anyone else for at least 5-7 minutes. We just sat there. Eventually ordered frozen margaritas but no one mentioned that the machine wasn't working so they came out just liquidy without any explanation. Food came out quickly after we ordered but portions were smaller than last time and maybe not worth the price. Tasted great and the server accommodated my request for a different sauce on the enchiladas. Fried ice cream was very good. We ordered second round of on the rocks margaritas that never arrived, as well as chips and salsa to go -- also never arrived. Server eventually came with all these items and took second margaritas off the bill. Loved everything about this place! The service, the people and especially the food! We had a long day of skiing and were looking for a place to lay back and relax, and we found just the place - Jose's Mexican restaurant. They started with their chips and salsa which was perfectly warm and fresh. We went on to have the mango margaritas which was just what we needed. The side of guacamole is surprisingly large compared to other mexican restaurants and sooo fresh! 3 out of 4 of us were vegetarian, and they were nice enough to substitute their meat for veggies. Their food was amazing! Delicious flavors and fresh ingredients. The servers were really really friendly and spent time speaking with us and made us feel at home. Loved it! We even got to sport mexican hats to celebrate our anniversary. If we're ever in the area for skiing again, I will definitely visit. Keep up the great work guys. read more

2.5 stars. We drive by Jose's while on vacation up in Baraboo and always notice a decent crowd so we finally took the plunge. The inside looks like it was an old Arby's or McDonalds that they had added multiple expansions on for more seating. They defiantly tried to put tables everywhere. There place is decorated nice and does give a authentic feel but sort of makes you feel claustrophobic with everything all over the place. When we arrived we were told it would be a 15 min wait, no big deal. I sat at the bar during the wait Hoping for a permeable maragarita. Must not have had a bartender because there was no one behind the bar nor did anyone ask what I wanted for the wait time, not a deal breaker the staff was busy but, this sort of raised a flag. I started out with a mango margarita. Very strong and very tasty. Highly recommend! Their menu is huge with alot of different things and combos. I ordered the Don burrito, steak burrito with cheese, topped with sour cream and tomato sauce. Well I wasn't to impressed. It just seemed like it was missing something. It didn't help either that All of our meals came out lukewarm. I overheard the table next to us mention the same thing. The guys walk out with the food on their arm with this long oven kit like the food is pipping hit, but sadly ours wasn't. It's not like we waiting that long for the food either. Maybe they need heat lamps or more servers. I did order a second margarita, strawberry, not that much flavor and almost like the meal, it was sitting for a while before it came out. The margarita was not that good and they charged an extra $8 for Don Julio. The food was bland and neither of us finished it. We both ordered seafood dishes and there was very little seafood. After reading the reviews we decided to give Jose's a try. I ordered a strawberry banana margarita and it was delicious! We had chips and salsa and check out the decor, it was festive! We went there for lunch. It was my wife my two children and myself along with a second family of three. Service was fast, the servers were friendly. My wife and her friend had margaritas and they both said they were great. We don't get this way often but we will definitely be stopping back. Nice little spot, that made you feel right at home. My husband and I love Jose's Mexican restaurant in Baraboo. My favorite dish is the Enchiladas Verde. My husband has had a different experience everytime we go! We have been to Jose's a few times, but this was the worst. We had a party of 8 and had to wait to be seated which was weird since we came during their down hours so it wasn't really busy. We were seated in a dark cramped corner near the kitchen. Because of the wait we had to order off the dinner menu since it was 5 minutes after 3pm. Being the dinner menu, I expected a little bit more food. The waiter didn't seem to understand us, he made us only tell him the menu number of our meal and didn't follow any special requests. One person in our party wanted chicken on their taco salad and was given beef, extra sides were not filled, kids meals were a joke. My meal was the most disappointing of all. I ordered off the vegetarian menu, so I expected VEGETABLES, nope, not one! Nine dollars for two flour tortillas, very runny beans and smothered in cheese sauce, WHICH I had requested to have left off. It looked horrible, and made me sick afterwards. I could have bought the same ingredients from a grocery store for a buck! read more

We had gone hiking nearby and decided Mexican food sounded wonderful. We had eaten here in the past and the food as we rememberd was always pretty good. However our last visit was a few years ago and alot has changed from then to now. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat in a booth. Our server came over and took our drink order and handed us menus. We were brought chips and salsa by another girl and then about 10 mins later we finally got our drinks we orderd. That is the longest I think I have ever waited for drinks before anywhere. We almost had eaten all of the basket of chips it took so long.. The resturant was not that busy (maybe 6 booths full, 20 customers total), and this is not that big of a place (one room) so I had to flag down another waitress who spoke little english ( she had a hard time understamding me) and remind her of our missing drinks. We both orderd different food items. My wife orderd a cheese and steak burrito and I had steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo fajitas... both were flavorless, overcooked small cut meat. Very chewy! Shrimp were not even able to eat they were so over cooked! My wives burrito had no cheese in it and it was a cheese burrito.... margeritas were all mix and tasted bad. Then the last straw or the icing on the cake was when I asked for a to go box for my daughters food. My wife and I left all of our food. They brought me a styrofoam box that was broken. Does anybody care in this whole resturant? All employees had time to chat and play on thier phones in the bar area. Each time one of us got up to use the restroom they were all gatherd in the same spot. I would say management needs to get a grip on this place soon. I was in the Dells for a training conference and found this gem. My co-worker and I ate here two nights in a row. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was warm and friendly and watching the staff balance an armload of plates at one time was great entertainment. Jose's Restaurant is a good place to go if you really want to try authentic Mexican food. I have eaten at some very good restaurants, but ,as a Mexican, I can distinguish the special flavor of Jose's restaurant. The building is small and welcoming. It is located close to Baraboo's downtown. They have a variety of dishes like seafood, tacos, pozole and Mexican deserts. Drinks also are very good, and you can enjoy free appetizers. read more

Found this place on yelp on a whim and were absolutely delighted. The food was first class, all scratch made. The salsa, especially the majo based one, is out of this world, don't miss it. Was excited about this because of the good yelp reviews, and know nothing of this area. Quite disappointing. The wait for food ended up being too long; when they arrived, half of the dishes were cold. I had the camarones al mojo. The grilled vegetables might have been good if they weren't smothered in some heavy cream type of sauce. The carnitas were pretty dry. The tacos were completely soggy. I feel bad for the wait staff; they all seemed exhausted. They need better kitchen management, and to refrain from "fattening up" their otherwise ok Mexican food. read more

This is one of the best places where I have had Mexican food. I had a mango margarita and it was nothing sort of delicious. The food was very good and tasty. The chicken burrito was yummy and I wish I could have had more of it. Moreover the owner is super fun and this is one of the very few restaurants out there where the owner comes down to the table periodically and enquires about how the food is. I don't understand all the 5 star reviews. Maybe I'm spoiled by the great Mexican place we have in our home town but the food at Jose's was very blah. It wasn't bad - it came out fast and hot and the portions were fine - there just wasn't much to it. A number of folks have commented on the runny, tasteless refrieds and they're exactly right. Unfortunately that same feeling extended across our whole meal. Even the complimentary chips came out of a bag. This place was packed, but they were quick to seat us...and even when they ran behind because of a large group and a very full restaurant...the owner made sure to stop by all the tables and resolve any possible issues...and our waiter offered a free margarita because of the delay! If I could give this less than one star, I would. I have never ate somewhere and felt so frustrated and disappointed after. I came here mostly just craving some horchata and a few carne asada tacos. First thing, when we asked for some horchata, they said they didn't have any. Since they didn't have horchata apparently, we all order margaritas, the biggest ones. They didn't have salt around the rim they had sugar ?? Weird. We finished ours fairly quick and didn't even feel tipsy. Nothing. Come to find out it's pre-mixed, and just gets diluted to nothingness. When we were brought chips we were brought stale chips with a weird thousand island dressing ?? Never in my life have I seen that at an authentic Mexican restaurant. Also, another thing I cherish is a good guacamole. We were served a bland, green mush. The food is pretty standard for a Mexican restaurant, but I've certainly never been disappointed by it. I think what really makes Jose's stand out is the service. Every single server goes above and beyond to make you have a pleasant experience. Jose himself will almost always stop by your table, too. The outdoor patio is a great addition as well.
