My family and I've been coming here for about 8 years. It's our go-to spot for Mexican food at the Dells. It's a great family-run restaurant with very good and flavorful food. We've gone here so many times the family that owns the restaurant takes really good care of us and provides excellent customer service. No matter what we order it always arrives hot and made with fresh ingredients and they don't skimp on the food. They're a really nice family so come out and support them. Saw this while walking on Broadway in the Dells and wanted both a lengua taco and horchata. The waitress/cashier was friendly, and the food came out relatively quickly. The lengua could've been more flavorful and didn't come with a lime, but the horchata was tasty. It was a good place to get a quick bite of authentic Mexican. read more

Delicious food! My dad spotted this place because they had a sign for lengua. The owner is super friendly and proud of his food. Brought us several homemade items to try, and all were amazing! No frills, just honest to goodness, authentic Mexican food. I especially appreciated the vegetarian options on the menu - even the refried beans are veggie friendly, which can be hard to find. Colotlan provided a taste of home for this Texas at work in Wisconsin. Both the salsa verse and salsa rojo provided nice heat with good flavor. Jarritos was served ice cold. Ordered enchiladas and the chile gravy was flavorful and just the right amount of cheese. I don't like when enchiladas are covered with too much cheese. First, don't be turned off by the dive-like interior! The building was obviously once a greasy spoon of some sort. We almost turned around and left, but we're very glad we didn't. My wife and I stopped into Colotlan a few days ago during an impromptu trip to the Dells. We chose the place based entirely on its high rating on Yelp, and boy, did we make the right choice! I have a passing familiarity with authentic Mexican cuisine, and I knew what to expect, but for those of you who don't, it can seem almost bland when compared with the Americanized version. I believe it is a lack of salt and emphasis on quality meats and tortilla. Carlos makes and prepares absolutely everything from scratch, and it shows. We were the only ones there to eat, although there were some teenagers walking in, looking for summer jobs. Carlos tried to tell them what it would mean to work for him, but they didn't seem to want to hear it. After they left, he clarified what was going on, and he brought out samples of what he meant -- tortillas before they are cut and cooked into chips, cuts of steak for Milanese, and a pot of vegetables being cooked into salsa. He takes great care to produce and prepare the food at Colotlan, which I feel is well worth the trip. If you like Mexican food, you definitely should give this place a try. read more

I actually happened by the Colotlan restaurant as I was in the city for the Taste of the Dells festival. The festival really didn't appeal to me too much when I actually visited. Besides having some chain-restaurants like Arby's, it lacked a lot of diversity. There was mostly very typical American food like brats 'n potatos but more importantly, there was little ethnic food like Indian, Thai or Mexican and hence how I ended up at the Colotlan. The place was dead when I got there. Mainly because of the festival so I was pretty much the only customer. The menu is interesting featuring a lot of typical options as well as some not so typical options. One of the things I was not too big of a fan about is the lack of free chips&salsa, a staple to most mexican restaurants. That said, I ordered a "swiss cheese burrito" - basically a burrito with some swiss cheese melted on top. I got it with a chopped avocado and bean and rice and jalapeño peppers. Although they didn't have hot sauce at the table, I ended up using some of the homemade salsa they have from the chips( I ended up buying chips separately.) The food itself was good, pretty fresh -- the owner claimed they make everything to order which I do believe. It was all good and honestly went quick. Stopped in here while just walking down the strip. I ordered the steak torta and my boyfriend ordered pastor gorditas. Both of us are very picky about our Mexican food, and we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious both of our meals were. They were very flavorful and authentic. The hospitality was wonderful as well, the team of waitresses made sure that we were doing well at all times. The chef, Carlos, also came to make sure we were doing well and to see if we wanted anything else. It is always great to see a chef make an appearance at your table, it shows just how much pride he takes in his work! We will definitely be back when we are in the area. read more

The Colotlan is a hidden little gem in the middle of the Wisconsin Dells! The owner is the absolute nicest and made our trip! His catering was the extremely fresh and I can't even image how amazing it has to be at the restaurant. The food was some what tasty not all that.. after ordering just tacos we were offered the taco dinner instead with rice and beans.. we decided to go ahead and try it but once we got our plates the tacos had very little meat very little rice and we had a burrito with literally strings of lettuce that could be counted. The burrito only had meat and lettuce nothing else. If you are looking for fast service and crappy americanized mexican food, then this is not the place for you. If you want authentic mexican where all of the recipes are put together on site, then this is your place. The chorizo tacos are amazing! This is one of the few places where I've actually ordered chorizo tacos and was not dissapointed-I actually ordered more! They actually offer cilantro + onions as additional toppings, as well as fresh avacado (if not sold out) to add to their tacos. Carols was happy to give us the history of the restaurant and proud that the restaurant offered authenticity and quality food. I can't say that I blame him. The food definitely speaks for itself. We will definitely return the next time we are in The Dells...or even passing through. read more

If I could give no stars I would. This had to be the worst dining experience I have ever had. In almost 20 years of going to the dells or in Chicago, IL where I live. Neither myself my wife or kids enjoyed the meal. We were really hungry so we stopped in. Upon ordering we noticed how unsanitary the place was. The kitchen looks dirty. While eating we saw one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. The waitress took left over salsa from a table where everyone had dipped and double dipped their chips. She then took it to the back and threw it back into a container to serve it again later to more customers. Needless to say we were disgusted and I paid the bill and got out of there. We arrived on Friday around noon and the place was dead. We were seated quickly and told there were only a few things available. We were able to choose from about 1/10th of the items on the menu. My soda tasted disgusting. It was way too carbonated and had no flavor whatsoever and the ice in it looked odd. My summary of this restaurant--Very expensive food, and very tasteless food. As someone who has eaten real Mexican food hundreds of times, this doesn't even come close. I had the combination plate, a taco, a quesadilla, and an enchilada made of chicken. The chicken had no flavor, the rice was extremely bland--this was the worst "mexican" food I've ever had--and that's saying alot, as I have vacationed extensively in Mexico, and lived in Tucson and Phoenix for almost twenty years. The only thing they got right was the kids meal hamburgers and fries. The hamburgers were big, and tasted good, but were pricey. It is very interesting that a so called "mexican" restaurant messed up on the Mexican food, but did OK with the gringo food. The french fries were good, and cut from real potatoes, and the hamburger and fries were the only things even worth thinking about coming back for. The average entree is $11-14, and the portions are skimpy. I guess the small portions were fine, since the food was so bad. I don't think I could have eaten a bigger portion of this awful food anyway. This is a place to be avoided. If you want "Mexican" food, avoid this place like the plague. By the way, the menu had prices scribbled out, and new higher prices written in next to the old prices. Right away, that should have been my first clue to leave. Our waitress didn't seem to understand English--it seemed that Russian was here first language. All in all, this was a miserable experience, and I will never bring my family back here again.
