We hadn't had dim sum in a long time, so after a car meet, we were really craving it and found this place near Ohlone College. We ordered some of our usual dim sum favorites, including shiu mai, har gow, chicken feet, steamed pork ribs in black bean sauce, and the shrimp spring rolls. Everything tasted really good, and the portions were generous! Even though they don't have a huge selection, they do have most of the classic dim sum dishes I like, so I had no complaints. The flavors were spot on, even without soy sauce, and I didn't feel thirsty after the meal at all, which is already a good sign. I was a bit disappointed with the har gow wrapper because it was a bit too floury. The shrimp spring rolls were fried so much that the shape completely changed, and I couldn't recognize them at first. Overall, we paid around $38ish for two people, which was a really good value for the portion sizes. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Hidden dim sum spot right near the Ohlone campus. Portuguese egg tarts are only available on weekends! They honestly looked pretty sad when they arrived at the table, but one bite and it had my nod of approval (fiancé thought it was too sweet though). Sweet, creamy custard with a touch of caramelization atop and a flaky crispy pastry crust: I was sad there were only two small po-tarts to an order! Besides the regular dim sum dishes, they also offer momos (Nepalese dumplings) on the menu! Super tasty and juicy with just the right amount of curry spice. The har gow were big and juicy! The custard buns were fluffy and delicious! The chicken feet were huge! The shrimp rice noodle roll also had a juicy shrimp and wrapped in a perfectly steamed, chewy yet soft, rice paper. Taro puffs were really crunchy with a moist filling. BBQ pork buns solid. The black sesame dumplings (mochi) were also good. The XLB were decent for a dim sum restaurant, although there was no soup to be found in the dumpling, and the skin was quite thick. We were also able to order Hainan chicken and braised brisket from their other restaurant (Joyful Hainan Chicken and Bento) around the corner and bring it in to eat with the dim sum. This place reminds of those hole-in-the-wall dim sum places in SF Chinatown. It's not like Pearl Bay or Mayflower, but it has it's own charm, and they serve decent dim sum. However, their menu is very limited, and they run out of items very quickly. I placed an online order at 10:00 a.m. right when they open, but they were already sold out of several items, including Baked Bbq Pork Buns (one of my faves). They have some of the standard dim sum offerings, but I'm surprised they don't have noodle roll (Cheung Fun) nor chow mein. What they do have is quite decent. I thought their sticky rice in lotus leaf was really good and had a good amount of filling. Their fried chicken wings were crispy and good as well. Joyful Dimsum Bistro was a random find through Yelp. I know my family prefers something filling, but affordable, so we decided to give Joyful Dimsum a try. I saw the reviews and at first I was skeptical because of the great reviews. Anything above 3.5 for dimsum places has me questioning whether it's legit or not, but this place was surprisingly great! Local people know where it's at! It seems like a small size family owned restaurant, not as big as the usual dimsum places like Koi Palace. There's a good number of tables inside, but not quite made for parties bigger than 6 because it could get squishy. Also, because it's a small shared plaza (mostly restaurants at the corner where Joyful is located at), there's a lot of shared seating area outside as well for people who just want takeout. And this was kindly advised for people who didn't want to wait for indoor seating. We came around 11AM for an early lunch right after hiking around Coyote Hills and there was a small wait already. For my party of 5, I'm guessing we waited for 15 mins or so. Not too long, just enough time to look through the menu and decide what to eat. We ended up getting: - Shiu Mai - Chicken Feet - Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf - Steamed Bean Curd Skin - Fun Gao Dumplings - Black Sesame Dumpling - Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings - Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce - Cucumber - Pan Fried Turnip Cakes - Fried Taro Puffs - Baked BBQ Pork Rolls - Pan Fried Pork Vegetable Buns - Pan Fried Turnip Cakes ...So quite a bit, but for a table of 5 this is a pretty reasonable amount. Of all the things I've tried I have to say my favorite few items were: 1) Fried Taro Puffs because filling to crust ratio is perfect. It had plenty of yummy filling. Because it's made fresh, it wasn't too oily either. It had a really nice, satisfying crunch when you bite into it. My mom, whose quite a picky eater had high praises for this one! 2) Baked BBQ Pork Rolls. The skin was flakey and it almost reminded me of a pineapple cake if it was made fresh. The skin is a little buttery and there's just enough BBQ Pork to give it a hint of sweetness. 3) Chicken Feet. It was saucy, but not too sweet. I can't pinpoint what I liked about it exactly, but sometimes chicken feet can have a weird smell or too much black bean in it. I think because this was made fresh, it was just enjoyable as is. 4) Chinese Broccoli because they're pretty generous with the amount and there isn't an overwhelming amount of oyster sauce mixed in. 5) Black Sesame Dumplings! This was a nice slightly sweet dessert to end to our meal. There was plenty of grounded peanuts and coconut shreds. The glutinous layer wasn't too sticky that it sticks to your teeth. Although I think they could have put in more black sesame filling, I think they made this pretty well and it was really reminiscent of some of the desserts I had in Taiwan. Service was really great. Although I think there's a little more foot traffic than they could handle, they handled the crowd fairly well and very politely. They sat people in tables in the same order that people came in (this doesn't always happen with bigger dim sum places). All the dim sum was freshly made and although I didn't describe all the dishes, I think they were all generally great. There's just some I'm more biased to and some I enjoyed more. This is the same Joyful dim sum bistro but moved to the new location, just around the corner in the same parking lot ! The new store has more tables and is more roomy , with new modern design and lovely green walls . It has big windows to overlook the coffee shop outside. You could see the red umbrella tables and the blue sky . They have printed new menu . More dim sum but skip the bento box . Their sister store is just couple steps away and it sells bento boxes only . I am happy for this small business to do so well that they opened the sister cafe business , 4 months ago . I understand that this isn't a vegan restaurant, and they don't advertise as vegan-friendly, but I wanted to share my thoughts for vegans who might want to try it with non-vegan friends and family. The food is great and I would've given it 5 stars except that the dinner menu was not very big. There weren't a lot of things to choose from for dinner, but everything we had was delicious! It is also a very small and tiny place, cannot accommodate too many parties to seat, but they run a very busy take out trade. We had the beef stew combination dinner as well as the Hainan chicken dinner. Both were done very nicely, the meat was tender, the flavors were rich, and the portions adequate. I really liked the Hainan chicken with the green onion ginger sauce! The service was very good, the lady who served us was very sweet and personable. Easy 5/5 for me. Located in an unassuming part of Fremont, the restaurant is definitely a bit different than your traditional dimsum place. It's not your traditional banquet hall, but they honestly don't need any of that because their dimsum makes up for all of it. Our table of 4 guys ordered a lot because we were hungry and the first 2 things we noticed were that it was really cheap, most items were under $6 when at other shops it would be about $8, and the portions were really good! When the shiumai and hargow came out, we were all pretty shocked by how big they were. We personally enjoyed the chicken feet, turnip cake, chicken wings, and shiumai a lot. On the other hand, I'd probably skip the spicy wontons, XLB, and beef balls. They did a great job with this new spot in the same old parking lot, so they didn't move too far out. Very good vibes now. The old location barely had spaces to sit. The fengshui at the new site is excellent. No crowds and no long lines on weekday mornings. Beautiful natural window views now. My server was conversational with me. She told me that they just moved over here 1-2 weeks ago. Love chatting in Cantonese. I told her that I'm a regular customer and enjoy eating dim sums here. Foods are good in quality, inexpensive, meets standards, huge portions provided, tasty, fresh, and better than most. I come here for good tasting foods. They don't serve the meal sets anymore, but it's definitely a very good dim sum spot with noodle soups and other items in progress. Chefs do a great job here. $5-$5.88 average per dish is super/great value for huge dim sums compared to $7-$8 elsewhere. While working out in Fremont I looked up a dim sum spot and found this little gem of a spot. I didn't feel like I was at a restaurant but more like I was at an aunties place and serving me a meal on my lunch break. Such a warm comfortable place to be at with all the comfort foods I love such as the baked bbq pork buns, egg tarts, sticky rice, pork ribs and rice cakes. And yes I ordered this ALL FOR MYSELF!! Joyful Dimsum is one of those true hole-in-the-wall spots that somehow beats the big, chaotic dim sum halls like Pearl Bay hands down - even if the dim sum itself is, honestly, just OK. Service is fine but nothing special, there's no chili oil (which feels like a miss for a dim sum spot), and tea comes in a paper cup with an unopened tea bag. Very take-out energy for a dine-in experience. Portions are also on the small side, with most dishes coming with just three pieces of dim sum. That said,l prices are reasonable and the overall experience is still far preferable to waiting forever, fighting carts, and dealing with crowds at the larger dim sum restaurants. Came here as I was craving for some dim sum and it was just okay. Service was okay. They give you a menu and you mark what you want on the menu. They serve you ten ren oolong tea bag and give you hot water. As far as the food it was just okay. Sui Mai and har gow are bigger in size than other places I've tried but flavor wise it was lacking. The baked bbq pork bun and the pineapple bun weren't hot and the ratio to filling to bun was off. Didn't taste fresh at all. But I will say when I went home and microwaved it, it was better. The steamed black sesame was good especially when it was hot. They don't have yellow mustard or the chili oil. They only have sriracha which didn't compliment the food at all. I personally felt everything tasted positively homemade. Nothing spectacular, but that's what gave each dish their charm. The scallion pancakes were my favorite! Perfectly crispy, oily, and tasty with a hint of bitterness. The xiao long bao had an interesting ratio of meat to wrapper, with the latter ripping open with how much meat there was. I found oddly textured chunks, but their immense pockets of flavor made up for them! The bao of the custard buns were fluffy and simply a joy to eat. However, I found the custard almost curdled and eggy, as well as on the lightly sweetened side (which is pure preference). Perhaps quality differs from day to day. I am very happy to have found another great dim sum spot that doesn't charge so much for one order. When we arrived a little past one, the place was full both inside and outside. They have very limited sitting so be aware of that. This place is definitely perfect for to go orders. We ordered 2 orders of shui mai, 1 order of har gow and 1 order of steamed bbq pork buns. Their shui mai was amazing. And its a pretty good medium size. It was very tasty and very filling. Highly recommend it. I enjoyed the har gow as well. The shrimp tasted good. The pork buns were perfectly size and not overwhelmingly big where you struggle to bit it. What was good about it as well is the filling was not too much it was just perfect. My dad and I went to try this place one early Sunday morning to try to beat the lunch rush. When we got there, it was empty but by the time we were finished eating, the seating was completely filled both indoors and outdoors. You order, pay, and then self serve tea or hot water. What we ate: siu mai (5/5) -- juicy, meaty, flavorful har gao (3.5/5) -- The skin was too thick, but the filling was filled to the brim with juicy, tender shrimp chunks and it had a very clean flavor accompanied by hint of white pepper. I would get again if I am in the mood for shrimp baked bbq pork rolls (2/5) -- A new dish that we had never seen before, I did not have expectations going in. The pastry is very buttery, so if you are easily nauseous like me, I would try a bite before washing it down with tea. The char siu also seemed to saturate the dough so it became there was a moist, dense layer between the pastry and the meat that was unpleasant steamed spare ribs (5/5) -- Again very clean and the taro soaked up all the pork juices. Garlic, pork, and light sesame flavors. I would avoid if you do not like to chew your pork too much though custard filled pineapple buns (2/5) -- Maybe it was an off day, but the custard had several large chunks of cornstarch globs throughout...the custard was also way too thick even after trying to eat warm. The ratio of filling to bread is good and the bread is quite tender, but the custard was disappointing chicken feet (5/5) -- the best sauce I have ever had for chicken feet...umami, sweet, barely spicy, and I could actually taste the fermented black bean...I took this home and ate it with rice overall, this is a very affordable place (only ~$30 for everything)!! The other day I went in to order some food as usual. Waited inside until it was ready. Everything was fine until my food arrived. When my food was ready the old lady asked my name to verify if it was me then proceed ed to give me my order. Joyful catered my son's 2nd birthday yesterday. We ordered a variety of dim sum (300+ pieces) and had it delivered to our house in San Mateo. The dim sum was well packaged, hot, and delicious. All of our 40 guests ranging from age one to 92 really enjoyed it. My favorites were the shiu mai and egg yolk buns. I coordinated the order with Joe Lin a month beforehand and paid over the phone two days before the party. Joe was easy to work with and told me I ordered too much, but I didn't listen and he was right. Better to have extra and happy to have such yummy leftovers, though. Unfortunately, I did not take any photos as I was super hungry coming in, but this place did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is in a hidden small plaza but has plenty of parking and about 4 tables inside plus some outside seating. It is a small business where the father is the cashier helping with the front and the mom is in the back cooking. Their daughter was there too, which was sweet and nice to see! For food, we ordered a good amount of items from the rice rolls with spare rib to the shu mai and xiao long bao. All the items came out piping hot and were super delicious. My favorite was the rice noodle with spare ribs. I think we ordered about 7 items and had plenty of leftovers. Our total was only about $47 before tip but after tax. Definitely worth it for the price and you get what you pay for. Overall, I'd definitely be back and thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant! Give this place a try! read more

This is a to go spot with very limited seating inside. I call it a "to go" spot because everything is served in takeaway containers. The lack of sustainable consumption is both an awkward dining experience and just plain wasteful. Spicy wontons were soggy. We ordered a crap ton of a food. No frills casual sit in or take out dim sum spot with a few tables inside and outside and does get pretty busy on weekends during lunchtime. Free parking in the quiet plaza. I've been back here many times now and have tried most of their dim sum items and drinks. The quality, taste, size and especially the price is great. It is a lot cheaper than most sit down dim sum restaurants and they steam it fresh to order. They are also better in quality than comparable take out dim sum shops I've tried in the area. I'd love to see actual rice rolls with filling inside or rice combos they offer during weekdays. read more

Located in Fremont, parking and availability are limited. There's only a few tables indoors and tables for 2 outside. Groups larger than 6 won't be able sit together. The noise level is average. The menu is small but has a good selection. The wait time for the food to be served was quite long (over 30 minutes after placing the order). Tap to pay is accepted.
