Our food came out the a timely manner. We requested the Hainan Chicken to be fully cooked and glad it was. We've always enjoyed a good hainan chicken so we decided to give Special Hainan Chicken a try. Coming in you can see the restaurant's layout was in an elongated format. You have a long stretch down from the middle with small tables from each side. The decor was fairly new and the restaurant was about 70% full. Our waitress led us to our table and here's what we ordered: 1. Signature Hainan Chicken Over Rice - 3 out of 5 The Hainan chicken itself was on the saltier side for me. This quality of the chicken should have been controlled better. Given that this is the main dish advertised, this was an unfortunate miss. With the dipping sauce of scallions and ginger being crucial to this dish, you really couldn't taste it besides the salt. The side dishes included were fine and the portion is generous. 2. Special Hainan Chicken Noodle Soup - 3 out of 5 The Hainan chicken given was separate from the soup. The chicken tasted identical to the rice dish, I suspect that it may have came from the same batch. The soup was a little blend, it was not our favorite. 3. Pan-Fried Fish Cake - 4 out of 5 I wasn't able to tell if this was made inhouse or not. Nonetheless, it tasted great with the sauce it came on the side. 4. Deep Fried Milk Curd - 5 out of 5 I don't see this dish offered at many restaurants in general so I had to order it. It definitely did not disappoint. It tasted similar to fried tofu but not. I had a chance to try out Special Hainan Chicken today and thought they had some of the best Hainan chicken I've had in the Bay Area. In addition to Hainan chicken, I also had a chance to try out their shrimp cakes and fried tofu dishes. The Hainan chicken shows signs of being skillfully prepared. The chicken skin is tight, there's a jelly-like layer between the skin and the meat, and the meat -- even the white meat, is juicy and tender. The ginger scallion sauce included on the side is salty and fragrant. Salted, crunchy peanuts are garnished on top of the dish as well. A half chicken is probably the perfect size to share between two. The shrimp cake -- served with a side of sweet chili sauce, is snappy, and has a nice bouncy chew to it. The braised fried tofu is silky soft on the inside, and the outside is akin to the deep-fried tofu pocket used for inari. If you're looking for a spot to pick up delicious Hainan chicken, look no further than Special Hainan Chicken. The chicken here is definitely the star. read more

They serve some pretty solid hainan chicken and I would say the portion and quality are great for the price! I had the Hainan Chicken Rice Noodle Soup. It was lots of food for only $14, but given that it was a limited time deal. The chicken was soft, juicy, and the green onion sauce was on the thicker side which I actually liked. The noodle soup was light and aromatic, but too light for the rice noodles to soak up any flavor. I added a ton of chili oil which helped. I also tried a bite of the hainan chicken rice plate; the rice had a subtle coconut-y flavor which was unique but nice. Now for the bad part; there was a bug in our drink. We had to come out to their second location and do their deal ~ The interior is more spacious and modern than the San Leandro location. Everything was refreshed and comfy to dine in. We ordered on the app and it was a bit confusing as there were several items from the previous guests that mixed with ours. Our food arrived quickly and everything was so well made. This location gave out a lot more hainan chicken than the other spot and the oyster omlette was so well done. You can really taste the oyster infused throughout the fluffy egg. Came on a weeknight and didn't have to wait to be seated. They let me choose where to sit and then handed me a menu. When you order, you order through the QR code on your table. I ordered the C01 Signature Hainan Chicken Over Rice. There was a pop up through the QR code that said that you can join their membership for free and then your first order would be 10% off. I signed up with my phone number. When I tried placing my order and then entering my phone number, the program kept "thinking" and wouldn't go through. So I ordered from one of the workers instead. I ordered (B02) Pork Knuckle Noodle Soup. You have a choice of noodles. I went with vermicelli in the original broth. I really liked the broth. That savory flavor with the taste of ginger was so good. The dish was loaded with noodles, green veggies, corn, mushrooms, scallions, etc. The pork knuckles melted in my mouth. I would order it again. (Price: $14.99). The only negative experience I had was when I was ready to pay and leave. The two servers were busy, and no one brought my bill. Great spot for a quick cheap lunch! Came by with my group because we were in the area and saw that they had some promotions from when they just opened. A bit of a bummer that we missed the $10 soft opening deal by a day but still got the Hainan chicken + noodle soup combo for $13.95! The broth and noodles were very simple but very filling with probably about 1.5-2 cups of rice noodles and some greens/mushrooms/corn in it. You have a choice to upgrade the chicken broth and also choice between many noodle types, but I stuck with the original. The chicken was served cold, which was a pleasant surprise because this is how my family makes it and enjoys it. It was perfectly done, not overly cook, juicy and paired very well with the scallion oil and peanuts. Came by after seeing their $10 Hainan chicken promo. That price is hard to beat, so I had to give it a try. We came for lunch on a Friday during peak time and the wait was about 20 minutes with about 13 people ahead, which wasn't bad at all. One thing to note: once you get the text, make sure you're physically in front of the restaurant. They texted our number at 12:22 and since we weren't physically there, they canceled our spot at 12:23. Thankfully, we still got seated shortly after, but just something to be aware of. Another solid yet 'not' Americanized Chinese resto hits this very ethnic strip in Union City. It replaced the short lived Lizhou which surprised me on why they couldn't put something together. This menu is pretty hardcore and really tailors to ethnic taste. No chow mein, no broccoli beef, no wontons. Those are Cantonese style dishes and what Americans find familiar and comforting. Here you'll find a whole page on soups and another page on small plates. And in those you better be into pigs ears, pork knuckles, fried intestines or tripe. Again this is targeting a specific taste and Americanized palates is not one. Lol Pork Knuckle Noodle Soup ($15/4*) Big bowl filled with clear vermicelli noodles and a very mild pork broth with a milky hue. There's definitely some serious collagen in the sips as I can just feel it on my lips. If you put this liquid into the fridge and let it sit, it would turn into straight meat gelatin. I'm into those sort of things so this worked for me. And this bowl was also loaded with chopped pieces of pork knuckle which is from the foot area. It is cooked to somewhat tender but still with a good chew. Lots of bouncey skin and tendon like bites here. There's a hint of 5 spice but otherwise very mild flavor. Gotta not mind eating through lots of bones tho, like way more bones to navigate through than eating wings. Ethnic palates like eating dishes with bones, Americans not-so-much. This soup was garnished with some corn kernels, green onions and a good amount of Chinese greens that were cooked perfectly. Overall I somewhat enjoyed this bowl of soup albeit a bit too sticky to down the whole thing. Braised Beef and Tendon ($10.50/4*) This is from the small plate section. Braised properly with a touch of soy and spices. Everything is properly tenderized from the slow cook. But very ethnic in choice of beef and cuts. Very erratic chunks of beef with lots of connective tissue that becomes very bouncy and gelatinous. That is what 'tendon' is referred to versus the large clear chunks like you'd see in a bowl of pho. So very loosely defined here. Kinda plain too as I got this for take-out and I ended up garnishing it with chopped onion and cilantro at home and I thought it added a nice dimension to it. Gave it more menudo vibes which I love. Choy Sum in Supreme Broth ($10.50/4*) Perfectly cooked whole stalks of Chinese greens, firm, vibrant yet cooked through. Swimming in a ton of broth that it was bordering on soup status. I couldn't even fit all the broth into a bowl at home without putting it in a massive soup bowl. I just used half the broth and used the rest for another purpose. Slices of king mushroom also in the mix which gave another texture but not much flavor. Mild but good veggie choice. Service was nice on my out and would try more things from the menu. They have 3 other locations in very ethnic areas around the Bay so they are showing some popularity, as the Asian presence is a ubiquitous feature these days. Sadly chicken is super greasy thick oily have blood and some look quite raw , and chicken have many small bones and the layer of fat is super thick . The only thing that I could adjust if I could, is a little more ginger and salt for the topping on the chicken. I like mine very gingery and a bit on the salty side. Otherwise, a solid dish.
