I was introduced to this place about four years ago when I went on a first date well he and I didn't work out, but I started a love affair with J'Pan Sushi. Not only is the food always good and fresh but the prices are great & the people that work there are also super friendly and funny, and accommodating. I also happen to work in Park slope Brooklyn so on the regular I get delivery from there and it's always super quick and the delivery people are friendly. JPan has been my sushi spot for like over 5 years. The sushi is awesome and the atmosphere is great, it is one of the first places I felt like a real regular (we exchanged sake/christmas cookies one year around the holidays) and even though I haven't seen any of the usual staff around lately, its still been pleasant. The Crazy Spicy and Yellow River rolls are insane, followed by the Winter and Sweet Potato rolls. Also the Avocado Cranberry salad is excellent, and I like both the unfiltered and lychee sakes. When I was new to the neighborhood there was a period of time during which I ordered various combinations of their dinner box every night for about two weeks. It helped that once I ordered once they stored my address and I didn't have to keep repeating it - it's actually half the battle to me and the easier the better. Is that weird? No, no because I really do love the food. Awesome. Always delicious, eating in or getting delivery. Service is fantastic and presentation (particularly if you eat in) is glorious. Favourites are the beef negimaki, the tuna teriyaki and the special rolls are excellent - well worth a try. Edit: I am still ordering from here frequently over 18 months later. Honestly, it's not the best sushi in Park Slope, but I'm still not sure what is, and until then I'm happy with this. They're sashimi is fresh, their non-sushi meals are tasty and portions are substantial, and best of all they're very quick. Most importantly, they're consistent and reliable. Went here for my first time a few weeks back, the sushi was really good. I ordered a spicy salmon roll and salmon skin salad. Everything was super fresh and tasty. What made this place stand out to me is that the presentation is better than my usual sushi spots and the portion sizes are a bit bigger as well. Typical Chinese run Japanese restaurant with average Japanese food. Nothing special here. I ordered the $30 tasting course, which comes with soup/salad, appetizer and entree. I got the spicy king crab salad which tasted decent. For appetizer,...honestly I don't remember what my appetizer was called, but it had avocados, and salmon/tuna?. It was not bad either, but tasted somewhat similar to the spicy crab salad, but without the crab. For entree, I got the 15 piece sashimi. Size of the fish were fairly big, but the taste was pretty disappointing. They were served pretty cold, and I could not taste the difference between each fish. They all tasted the same, and it was meh. I usually love sashimi, but the fish they served me was mehhhhhhh. I'm not sure what was wrong but it did not taste good, nor did it taste bad. It was just tasteless. I couldn't taste the difference between the salmon, tuna, white tuna (usually my favorite). Overall, it's just an average place. I use to come at least twice a week but I moved from Brooklyn and nothing can compare to this place . Every Time I come I forget to check in or yelp says im to far away . 5 stars is not even enough I wish I could rate this restaurant higher . The food is pure perfection I always get the crazy spicy roll it is a hint of spicy and serious flavor . I always walked by this place and never stopped in until last week. I'm sort of a sushi snob, so to my surprise the sushi here is quite good! I think its almost on par with Taro, but more inventive. Jpan has this wonderful outdoor garden in the back, very peaceful and pretty. It was a bit empty but I'm sure it will pick up soon once this spot gets discovered more. Staff is extremely nice, attentive and warm. The miso garlic tuna, holy cow so good! There were so many rolls to choose one but settled on the Kirin roll along with the sushi classic, very tasty. Fish is very fresh, the some pieces melted in my mouth like a piece of good otoro. Some pieces also came with its own topping which is always a nice touch. Great consistent fresh sushi. This place changed my whole outlook on sushi in two words: Monkey Roll. Great selection of rolls with cooked sushi which is great for first timers. Cozy comfortable atmosphere and warm welcoming staff. Great for a date or with a group of friends. As for the food, venture out and try an appetizer, all are interesting and delicious. I really enjoy their simple but tasty seaweed salad. As for rolls I tend to stick with the house special rolls which are entirely worth it. Some of my faves include the previously mentioned Monkey Roll, Yellow River Roll, Country Roll, Fire Island Roll, Crazy Spicy Roll, & Fancy Roll. Their Vegetable Fried Rice is surprisingly delicious. Typical inauthentic "Japanese" catering to the spicy tuna and chicken teriyaki set. Service above average for one of "these places", but ultimately this is just another Chinese operation built on mayonnaise and novelty rolls. Anyone with sense can tell that every roll and nigiri here is prepared with sopping wet hands, but if you're someone who insists you know how fresh your frozen minced tuna is after its been mixed with a pint of sriracha, you're beyond saving. read more

Consistent, great/friendly service...we've been once when the uni wasn't very fresh, but everything else is usually good. Always order the phoenix roll(has mango cranberry and almonds in it-unique and great flavors) and the tuna dumpling appetizer (if available)--it's not a usual dumpling though so be prepared to be pleasantly surprised! J pan is pretty much amazing. It's by far my favorite sushi in the city, and very reasonably priced. Freshest fish by far, and I'm a sashimi purist most of the time. I've been here probably 50 times or something silly (I lived down the street) and never had a bad experience. They are friendly, the food is always fresh, and you won't break your wallet. I don't know that you can really say what to order in a sushi restaurant, but you can never go wrong with the salmon and yellowtail sashimi. So f'in good. read more

I went to Japan last year and lost 10 pounds because I just wasn't eating (or maybe it's just because I wasn't eating processed American crap - who knows). Since then I've started eating fish after being a life-long vegetarian, so my options have expanded a lot. I thought I would give Japanese food another shot. In spite of my pickiness when it comes to Japanese food - I loved JPan sushi! I had it last night and really enjoyed it. This is a very solid spot for sushi but it reeks of catering to folks that look for their biggest bang for their buck and lack authenticity. In specific, I'm dissatisifed with my experience because they serve portions that are way too huge. I would have been happier with my experience if I was given less food like how many other restaurants are in the NYC area. I ordered the chirashi bowl and what I got was not something I would have expected. In many restaurants in the city, chirashi is simply a bowl of rice with an assortment of fresh fish on top. Its very simple and something that I wanted. When I got the chirashi from Jpan, it was a plate of assorted sashimi, with a portion that looked like 2 bowls of rice topped with tempera like flakes or wonton strips, egg strips, fake crab strips, and what seemed like unagi sauce. On the side was a mini volcano of spicy salmon topped and covered with avocado. This was overwhelming considering my expectations on what a chirashi bowl was. This version of it wasn't bad, it was good, but I finished the meal feeling sad that 1) I only finished half my meal because it was so big and 2) I just wanted fish and rice. read more

I love JPan. I kinda wanna marry it. I could go on and on about JPan, how it compares to the other sushi places in the neighborhood (including the 3x more expensive Blue Ribbon across the street), how it trounces most of the places I used to frequent in LA, blah blah. BUT I will try to keep it succinct this time, by utilizing bullet points. 4 things really stand out about Jpan: 1) Freshness. Their seafood, meats, vegetables, and fruits are always *noticeably* fresh. Not merely fresh enough that you don't notice a lack of freshness, but *noticeably* fresh. SO good. 2) Value. JPan is NOT a discount sushi place. It is, rather, a high-end sushi place, but at the cost of a regular sushi place. We usually spend about $30 for the pair of us, and one of us will be lucky enough to have leftover teriyaki chicken for lunch the next day. When we stick to sushi only and don't order an entree, or when we are around to take advantage of their $8 lunch special (which, I'll iterate, they will DELIVER), we can get outta there for $20. That's for two people, not just one. On the other hand, when we feel like celebrating with some of the wilder house rolls and who knows what else, we have the option to drop paper like big ballers too - which, in my humble opinion, is perfection. 3) Creativity. I won't harp on this too much as it's gone into in great detail in virtually every review below. Let me just emphasize that their menu is full of delectable surprises, and the fabulous waitstaff will happily explain each and every one to you in loving detail. Which brings me to... 4) Service. Literally and unconditionally, some of the kindest, most attentive and detailed service I have ever had anywhere, at any level of eatery, in any city in the world. We eat here an average of two to three times per week now, and we've received the same kind of service since the beginning when we were all strangers. In that period of time, we've had ONE experience where the food was less than satisfactory (chicken, btw, which I brought back after picking up due to its simply seeming and tasting less fresh than I'm used to from there - they've spoiled me). The entire staff of the restaurant descended upon me to apologize, brought me delicious tea while I waited for the re-made meal that THEY offered without my having to request or demand it, chatted with me while I waited, and (haha) paid me compliments. Damn! They're good. While I commiserate, I thumb my nose at the commenters below who didn't get the freshest of fare for whatever reason and threw it in the trash. If those unfortunates had bothered to let the fine folks at JPan know, I can guarantee that they would have gone above and beyond to make it right. However, I want to point out that this level of attention on their parts isn't limited to the occasion when something might not be right and they want to make up for it. It is simply, wonderfully, consistently good service, EVERY TIME we visit, take out, or get delivery. Honestly, in New York, as in any big city, this can be very hard to find. We heart u, JPan. Very unique style of Japanese food a perfect example would be their Tuna Dumpling, which taste amazing with blends of different flavors. I love the sushi , which has a fresh taste and texture making it distinguishable from other Japanese restaurants. It has a great ambiance with contemporary asian style lounge music. I can't speak to their food or dining atmosphere, but I can tell you that this restaraunt employs some p*ssed off delivery guys. When one of their fellas tried to slip into our building behind me without being buzzed, I politely asked him to buzz whoever he's delivering to and they would let him in. This policy isn't based on Park Slope pretentiousness but on several instances of people coming into our building pretending to be delivery guys and stealing sh*t, and in one instance actually breaking into an apt. Thus the building enacted a rule that residents are responsible for anyone they allow into the building. Makes sense to me. Well this grizzled veteran of the delivery game apparently took umbrage with my polite request and decided to call me a "fucking asshole". When I asked him what he said, in case I misunderstood or what have you, he made himself plenty clear. Tough call right? Do you curse the dude out? Punch him in the face? The later sounded really good in the heat of the moment but I'd definitely prefer to avoid any legal entanglements or injuring a hand on his snazzy little red helmet. Plus, even if I was fully in the right, I can't think of anything more depressing than fighting some sad-sack delivery guy, the guy must have a rough, rough life )not that that is license to be an as*hole). Called the restaurant to complain and the woman I spoke to seemed pretty unsurprised, guess the guy is a d*ck to the staff too. So yeah, maybe order sushi somewhere else unless you're feeling agro and want to throw down with a belligerent delivery guy. read more
