I hired Grasstains to redesign my yard, and honestly, they knocked it out of the park. From the first meeting, they were super easy to talk to and really listened to what I wanted--even when I wasn't totally sure myself and changed my mind a few times. They took my scattered ideas and turned them into a beautiful, low-maintenance space that fits my style and actually works for how I use my yard. They mixed in native plants, added some great hardscaping, and even built a rain garden that will help with some drainage issues. The whole crew was always on time, respectful, and knowledgeable. if I could rate this business, any lower, I would.. I would give it a flat out F. Incompetence, noncommittal to start.. what was to have been a four day consecutive job turned into several months because they over committed and did not prioritize and many times didn't show up and didn't call. incompetence from those not knowing what they're doing. One would think employees would know a weed from a plant so instead my yard was decimated of /plants and their idea of weeding was hacking at them not pulling them... spreading lightweight cedar chips in a windy area doesn't work either and spreading them where they're not supposed to be spread he is also incompetence.. We hired Grasstains to redesign our front and back yards. Matt was easy to work with and provided realistic ideas that were within our budget. The crew was responsive, cleaned up the job site at the end of each day, was respectful of our neighbors' space, and communicative. They completed the project a little bit ahead of schedule. They also seemed pretty organized. We are very pleased with the outcome. Looking back, though, I wish I had requested a final walkthrough after the plants were put in. We worked with Grasstains on a massive project for our backyard. They installed several steel retaining walls, over 70 steel stairs, steel fencing and gates, leveled the backyard, installed turf grass, a massive irrigation system, added lighting, a fire pit and plantings. One of the things that I hired Grasstains to do is run irrigation into my backyard from the valve box in my front yard. They included this in the bid for the rest of the work they were doing in my backyard, however once they completed all of the work, they had installed pipes and wiring in the backyard but forgot to connect it to the front yard valves. In a hurry to get their work done, they buried my electrical 1" below ground and the water pipe is about 2" below ground. Naturally the electrical has worked it's way above ground and was spliced by the lawnmower. I have now spent a lot of time and money trying to locate all of compromised areas on that electrical wire as well as paying to have it dug up and replaced. They also messed with one of my sprinkler heads in the front yard when digging and put it back so that it sprays sideways into the ground. I had this initial work done in 2020 and there were various issues that I don't even want to relive. I just paid someone to come out and fix it all, which is why I'm writing this review, because I saw where the wire and pipes are laid. Buyer beware, they cut corners and you'll end up spending more money down the road. read more

I first used Grasstains for my front yard redo a number of years ago and had to call them for my backyard reno. They price fairly, give great suggestions if you're undecided and get the work done quickly and beautifully. The work crew was here on time, early in the morning, and worked 11 hour days, finishing the project earlier than I had expected. It included removing all sod (weeds and moss mainly, with crappy old grass in a few spots), and putting in a smaller area with new sod, edging, weed fabric, cedar chips, and removal of debris from 3- 15+ Foot bushes and an old stone fountain. A full list of issues we had with Grasstains would be too long to list, but here are some highlights: - The drip irrigation system wasn't designed or installed correctly. We had both over-watered or under-watered areas that damaged plants. - Many emitters became clogged as they were installed subsurface without air relief valves. - The drip system was installed without a filter. This is industry standard for drip systems. When I asked about it, Matt wanted an additional $350 to install a filter. We had to threaten filing an LCB claim to get a filter installed. - The drip system pressure regulator was buried 2 feet in the ground, instead of being installed in a valve box as serviceable hardware should be. - The person who installed our backflow preventer was not licensed to do so. - A year after the drip system was installed, the fitting they used to tie into our water main had a massive failure. We ultimately filed and won a claim with the Oregon LCB , and hired a different company to install a completely new drip system. Matt is by far the most dishonest and incompetent contractor I've worked with. Just search the internets for "grasstains lcb claim" to read the claims against him. read more

Our vision was a lawn-free back yard filled with native plants, and small hardscaped purposeful areas that were private, and surrounded by greenery. A planted burm, maybe a rain garden aspect. It was very difficult to find any landscaper in the Portland area even interested in this project. Grasstains, on the other hand, were excited about it! This review is long overdue. I contacted Grass Stains in June to landscape my rental property in Hillsboro. Matt got back to me very quickly with a detailed plan for what I was looking for as well as great recommendations for plants, given that the property is tenant occupied. He was very responsive and communicative throughout, including a prompt reschedule of his crew due to rain. After 2-3 days, his crew installed a very nice paver patio and walkway as well as a surrounding plant bed. His price was extremely reasonable and was a pleasure to deal with - especially as an out of town landlord. My tenants and I couldn't be any happier! read more

We bought a new house and needed some help creating a plan for the yard and surrounding rock wall area. There was a lot of unfinished business left with remaining drainage, hardscaping, and general cleanup. Matt and grasstains came as a referral from a friend. Within a week we had a meeting with him and his foreman, and a plan to begin work before the new year. They were done in about a week, and even with the busy end of year, before the rains, madness, they pushed hard to get the work done and the new work established before the weather really changed.
