We have family in Alaska so we visit every few years. Each time we go we try to find a restaurant that is actually good. This had all the makings of being THE one. We just got off the plane after a long flight and were starving. 4 1/2 star review rating on Yelp. Charming atmosphere. What could go wrong? Okay, the service was good and quick. That's about it. The food really had no taste. The omelettes were bland, the pancakes were generic, etc. The creative reindeer dish had store bought polish sausage cut up, barely warmed and added to the omelet. That's the best you've got? Alas, the search continues. But now I know why my brother-in-law prefers to make his own meals rather than eat out. I would too if this is a 4 1/2 star. C'mon, Alaska! Stopped here for breakfast while visiting friends. It's a small cozy restaurant and was packed with a short wait for a table. After a quick wait we were seated and greeted by a friendly server that helped steer us toward some great breakfast choices. The food came out quick and was delicious comfort food. I had two eggs over medium, hash browns, a side of reindeer sausage and wheat toast. We all loved our meals. It is cash only though, but if you don't have $ on you there is an ATM in the restaurant. read more

My husband and I went in yesterday for late breakfast, got there just in time before the rush. The people were super nice and if you're a coffee drinker your cup will never be empty! The staff was very nice. The decor is a little outdated but I think it fits so well. It's an older style but not a stale or dirty one by any means. So this was my second time. I had heard great things about Judy's and I recall thinking to myself "What's so special about this place?" my first time there. I think I was expecting something different and after some thought, I've only heard that it's some great homestyle cooked meals. Well that is probably the best description you can give. Had the Chicken fried steaks and eggs with a side of grits. I LOVE grits! A tad lumpy but nothing a bunch of butter and a little stirring didn't fix. Eggs were perfect. Sunny side up. I hate when the whites aren't cooked, but they were done perfectly. The chicken fried steak was a bit odd. The texture was different than anything I have had before. I kept picking at it to see if it was some processed slab of meat but it wasn't. So I guess a positive comment would be it was very "tender". Once I got over the "uniqueness" in my opinion, it was gone in a flash. The gravy is a touch bland but nothing a little salt and pepper didn't fix, so it's probably healthier that way. For many other folks, the most negative thing was probably the coffee. it was the old style Folgers or something along those ones. I don't mind that one bit. It reminds me of my younger days working in the fish processors where we would drink gallons at a time so it holds a little nostalgia for me since any more, at home or at the office I seem to be drinking the so called "premium" stuff. Nice healthy portions. Great prompt service. Reasonably priced but I wouldn't call it cheap. $13 and change for the whole shebang. They only take cash or checks...but they do have an ATM there. Its close enough to home that I can certainly se going back there more often. read more

By far my favorite breakfast joint in Anchorage. Very old school and makes me feel like I'm at my grandmas table on Sunday morning. The B & G is delicious and the Denali Omelet is amazing but where they really hooked me is the Corn Beef Hash!!!! Literally every bite of it takes me back in time when Mamee was alive and making the best food ever. It is a small place with limited seating so not good for a group over 5 or so and is cash and check only but that's something I love about it. I really wanted to say good things about Judy's but.......... i had eaten here before a few years ago in the dark ages before Yelp and it was ok So my eating partner and i went in after seeing a ton of people leaving. i thought, score free tables. No way a bunch people had been waiting . No big deal We to can stare at the dishes going by. Partner orders bacon eggs sunny side up with toast . likes it I order chicken fried steak, hash browns (extra crispy on the hb please)sausage gravy and poached eggs with toast. Now the problems start when the plate came out . If you are going to put Sausage gravy on the CFS it should be white ish thick ish and sausage ish. Stunningly it was none of these it was a gross watery mess . the waitress whom i do not blame other than not having the commonsense to say no to the kitchen and not serve until ready . 5 minutes later a new batch of gravy was ready and came n a little bowl. But the water showed that the CFS was burned/fried to a crisp . Making a tough outside and a mealy grey inside. About the worst CFS since Village Inn. hash browns nice and crispy as ordered , went well with the new gravy went it came. Eggs poached were done half assed , yolk broken. This is what really got me after being charge 13.50 for CFS DONE POORLY . They had the gall to charge an extra .50c to poach the eggs. Huh??????????? i have never seen a breakfast joint charge to poach an egg ,especially one done wrong . Toast was ok eat more of it then the CFS . The best greasy spoon in South Anchorage! Always full and one of the only places I know of where you can get grits. If your dish comes with ham it will be a thick slab of real ham, not that thinly sliced processed stuff. Simple comforting food cooked perfectly every time. read more

what a funky, slightly dilapidated gem on the South side! Here's the thing - I probably wouldn't come here again mainly because I'm not a huge going out for breakfast person, it's on the south side of town, and there's bound to be a cramped waiting period on the weekend. But! I genuinely enjoyed my time here. The coffee is so so, but it's simply a local dive diner, so if you're looking for french press, go to the bears tooth grille. The wait to be seated was only about 10 minutes - the place as a whole probably only has about 10 tables. Service was fast and friendly enough (my dad is a regular and there appears to be a lot of those). I was quite happy with my meal - I had the corned beef and hash. Because the meal already comes with homestyle potatoes, I asked them to nix the hashbrowns for a couple dollar pancakes. The hashbrowns came with the pancakes anyway and I wasn't going to complain about that! The corned beef was lacking in quantity, but made up for in taste. The beef was tender and not too salty. The hashbrowns were not mushy, but a little dry and perfectly crisped on the outside - just the way I like em. The cakes were super moist and spongy - also just the way I like them! The eggs were cooked as requested. My boyfriend was very happy with his biscuits and gravy, noting that the biscuits were definitely scratch made, as was the gravy. He also ordered a side of bacon and it was generously portioned, medium thick bacon. all in all, a great divey-ish diner. As a side note, you can also get homemade pies and cookies here. I love eating a big breakfast before heading out of town. Judy's is my favorite spot for that. I went to Judy's with my girlfriend for the first time today because we had heard that the food was really good. We walked inside and noticed a sign at the front counter that said they didn't accept debit cards, neither of us had a credit card or cash with us so we talked about it for a second and decided to leave. Right after we mentioned that we didn't have a credit card one of the servers looked at us, rolled her eyes and said "whatever". I feel like that was extremely rude and I will never go to Judy's again. That is a horrible way to talk to customers, and a great way to lose business. read more

Fast, eggs were fresh (Yay!), grits were thick like I like them and the bacon was thick and crunchy, just how I like it! I would say the only downside to Judy's is the small space. Judys cafe ,,,as I walked into this fairly small diner , I found myself already annoyed that their was a line , and FYI i was told another customer that we dont give are name you just wait in line til someone gets up ... Annoyed once again , but i was hungry and it was raining ... Well Im glad i stayed! The waitress was fast and helpful with the menu , the coffee was poured and ready before we even sat down , and the cornbeef hash was to die for .. My husband and i just moved from the east coast and I tend to be a snob about the restaurants in AK but i would recommend Judys Cafe to the top critics in NYC . I just have to add I shared a sticky bun with my husband as well and i was the most delicious one Ive ever had , it was huge and the price of the whole breakfast was also a pleasant suprise .. Great fast food & very nice servers. It's small, so sometimes there's a line. We've ordered by phone for pickup several times & it's ready in 15 minutes-always correct & good.
