My inlaws had been here before and wanted to take us for Father's Day. It was busy when got there at 2pm and died down around 3pm. The menu marks spicy dishes, but not "white people" spicy. If you don't handle spice well, I recommend looking into jerk and curry flavored dishes before coming. I wish they had their full menu online because I like to get a sense of what I want before I arrive. Our appetizer was coconut shrimp. I am used to bland coconut shrimp but the shrimp here had a strong and fresh coconut flavor. My father in law had salmon with lemon butter, plantains, jasmine rice. He said everything was amazing. I ordered a Yardie Stack, which is a sandwich with a Jamaican patty of choice (I chose chicken), baked mac and cheese, and oxtail gravy on coco bread. Served with fries. The Jamaican patty was a little spicy but the sweetness of the bread and other flavors melded suspiciously well. That was a lovely sandwich. Fries were sub par but everything else was beyond any expectations I had, even the cabbage medley. My wife ordered fried chicken and I nearly bit my lip trying it. It melted when my teeth touched it and it exploded with juice. It took awhile to get food but they were swamped and it was worth it. My father in law also said the bread pudding is great and bought a slice to take home. The disappointing fries are a reason to be more adventurous and try the other foods. Just know your gonna wait 1-2 hrs for you food no matter how simple the meal is. Waitresses aren't attentive and once you get your first drink don't expect to be asked for another or to see the waiter again lol. But there's a lot of people coming I so maybe it's that good but just a heads up. Prices are a little high but it's the only Jamaican style Spot in the area so there's that. Extremely Disappointing Experience -- Wrong Order, No Accountability I've ordered takeout from Judy's Island Grill before and decided to dine in this time with a friend who was trying to support me after a very stressful and traumatic week. She took me out to help ease my anxiety, and we ended up having a very deep and intense conversation throughout the meal. Unfortunately, that experience was overshadowed by what happened with the food and service. We were seated at a dirty table, which we had to ask to be cleaned. Not a great start, but fine -- things happen. I ordered the brown stew salmon. When our food arrived, the server stood there and asked, "Who ordered the jerk salmon?" I immediately said that I did not order jerk -- I ordered brown stew salmon. She responded "OK" and placed the dish in front of me. At that point, I assumed it may have just been a slip of her tongue. The dish didn't overly look like traditional jerk (it wasn't dark or blackened), so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. After just a few bites, my mouth was on fire. It was spicy. I began to wonder if they made their brown stew salmon with a little bit more of a kick than I was used to. Given everything I had going on that day and the nature of the sensitive conversation I was having with my friend, I didn't want to interrupt the moment or make a big issue about the food, so I tried to push through, even though I had to keep drinking water between bites. When the server later came around to check on us, I mentioned that the dish was very spicy and that I suspected it might actually be jerk. The explanation I received was honestly unbelievable!!! The server said to us *The (Hispanic looking) woman who took your order is the manager/owner, and she doesn't know the difference between the two dishes. (The server said this to us!!) She continued: * There is only one button for both jerk salmon and brown stew salmon. Because of that, she (the owner/manager) was supposed to go to the back and explain to the chef that I wanted brown stew instead of jerk -- but she clearly did not do that. Even more concerning, the server admitted she suspected the dish might be wrong when she brought it out -- and served it anyway. Let that sink in. I literally said at the table that I did not order jerk salmon -- and it was still placed in front of me and left there. She did not check with the Chef what order he received. What if I had a food sensitivity or allergy?!????? This is not just poor service -- it's careless. Even more disappointing: No apology. No accountability. No attempt to make it right. Just a full bill as if nothing happened. A manager should absolutely know the difference between two completely different dishes!! This experience left me feeling frustrated, dismissed, and honestly a bit disgusted. Something has clearly changed here, and not for the better. Proceed with caution. I was here the other night. I simply went in to buy patties. I purchased 2 spicy beef patties, 2 curry chicken patties, and one jerk chicken patty. This was not my first time getting food from this restaurant. However, it's been years so I wanted to get some because I haven't had it in a long time. I've been coming to Judy's for years. Back when they started as a hole in the wall spot in GB with Judy cooking in the back. It is truly not the same anymore. I along with other regulars have noticed that the quality and taste has slipped dramatically. Tonight the quality and consistency was the worst. Food Hygiene The glove hygiene for several of the staff working is atrocious. The cashier did not remove the gloves when taking orders on the register. Had 1 glove on his dominant hand then touching and bagging food with the non-gloved hand, truly defeated the purpose. Never took off or put on a new glove in between tending orders and bagging food. Also saw him touch non food surfaces (his pants, counters, carts) with the gloved hand then touch food. Pretty sure this is not meeting code. More training and education is needed. Jig Wings This is the second time I have gotten their wings. Both times they were consistently sub par. The wings are NOT made to order. Instead they are either reheated or sitting under a hot light which results in the wings being over cooked, dry and tough. Slathered in sauce to cover up the reheated taste. Such a shame since it takes only a few minutes to make wings fresh. I would gladly wait for freshly made wings. Curry Chicken This is my go to, for years it has been stellar. For years it was the best I had ever had. Not anymore. The last several months it has really not been the same from large pieces of fresh herb stems not being removed, which results in you getting stuck in the mouth or almost choking on stems. I am all for fresh herbs, whomever is making the food doesn't take the time to de-stem which is not how it use to be made. The sauce this time was overpowered with a garlic and celery salt, making the sauce have an odd taste, that was not present like that before. The curry sauce was watered down to the point that it was runny, also lacking the usual vibrant yellow color. Giving days old vibes. I would rather you tell me you are out of it, instead of trying to make it stretch. They do still give you plenty of pieces of chicken which is nice that this hasn't changed. I was extremely disappointed, especially since the prices were raised to $20. I don't mind paying more, as long as the quality and portions are not sacrificed, which is not the case here. Rice & Peas Under cooked rice has become the normal delivery with less than coconut mills in it too as it no longer has the island taste to it. Peas are often undercooked as well. Mac n cheese The cheese sauce was very dry, tasted like it sat under a hot plate too long as the noodles were just lightly coated. Good flavor, despite the lack of cheese. Alfredo The chicken is overly dry, tasted like it like they use old jerk chicken cause it's so over done in the dish. Excellent cream sauce, is the only part that tastes fresh. Has a string spice presence so it does have a level of heat to it. Cabbage The flavor was not present nor seasoning that it usually has. It was watered down as well. At least the veggies weren't over cooked or mushy. It's really sad to see one of my favorite places become so sub par. The staff do not have the same love or care for the food that started the business. Long wait times due to disorganization and reheated food just makes this place like every other. I had hoped it was flukes, unfortunately since last winter the quality has continued to decline. Here's hoping things will get resolved soon. Let me know if they do. I am SO glad we chose Judy's Island Grill to cater our 175-person wedding! We had tastings with a few of the big Annapolis-area catering companies, got quotes and sample menus from more than 10 others (plus some food truck options), but couldn't bring ourselves to spend $14K+ on bland, standard wedding food. We wanted something different--delicious, flavorful, fresh food with plenty of variety: hot, cold, spicy, sweet, saucy, vegan, and meat. Supporting a local, Black-owned business was also important to us, and Judy's was the perfect fit. We worked with Freka, who was organized, thoughtful, and proactive--she helped us think through layout, flow of the evening, and more. She even referred us to our amazing wedding coordinator, JRowe Event Planning & Design. Visiting the Glen Burnie location for tastings was such a fun part of the process, and we loved everyone we worked with at Judy's. The food itself was out of this world. For appetizers, we had veggie patties, tropical salad, crab cake balls, and jerk wings. Dinner included brown stew chicken, blackened salmon, curried tempeh, rice & peas, plantains, and cabbage. Judy's also provided our signature drinks, which were delicious and perfect for the weather and vibe. I was directed to a kiosk to place my order because (unbeknownst to me at the time ) employee was counting cash behind the counter and no one else could service me. I really wanted to get a recommendation for a food order as it was my first time visiting and went with my jerk response. I ordered A Dark Meat Platter with Mac& Cheese and Rice & Peas . I enjoyed the Chicken and rice and peas, I probably won't order the mac & cheese again, and will try something else off of the menu as far as a side. I have been a loyal customer for over ten years. Stop in today have dinner. The moment I walked in the restaurant you could definitely tell things where different. The service was slow. Once my food came to the table I knew I was in trouble. My brown stew chicken was nothing but bones. I asked to speak to the manager (Zenni). She was pleasant when she came to the table as I explained the issue. Once the check came she actually gave me a$2.70 discount(thanks) for the plate full bones that I couldn't eat. So finally I was able to give this place five stars! I've wanted to for so long but my heart could not because historically their service has been trash. Let me be super specific and say this...the food has always been above par, superb, fantastic, and simply amazing. I've never had an issue with it and continued to be a patron despite the service. The ambiance is what you want from an authentic Jamaican spot...vibrant colors, great music, and background laughter from pleased customers. Again these things have always been 5 stars...but the service was not. Finally yesterday, 4/8/23, they had refreshing new cashiers and hosts. When I say they were friendly, helpful and kind, I mean it. They greeted me when I came in, and so I didn't have to wait, a young lady offered me help while using the kiosk. Idk where or when this new fairly young staff came from, BUT KEEP THEM. They are the difference, in my humble opinion, between 3 stars and 5 stars.
