---COVID UPDATE--- I've never dined in, only ordered curbside takeout. The food was hot and delicious. They are known for their wings and their smoked fried chicken, both of which were AWESOME. As for the rest of the items in the sampler, it was fairly typical barbecue, nothing super memorable. We paid a few dollars extra to upgrade one of our sides to brussel sprouts, but we didn't find it was worth it, especially for the amount that they gave in the container. It might be different in the restaurant, but not for takeout. Next time, I'm definitely ordering all wings and smoked fried chicken. read more

Yum!! Excellent southern food right in Annapolis. We ordered takeout (for obvious reasons). It was ready on time and still hot when we got home. I had the Chicken Pot Pie with a side salad. Ah. The crust. The buttery crust. If you're craving comfort food, this is for you! My salad was very fresh and I like that I got to choose the toppings (kind of like Panera). My mom had the Smoked Fried Chicken because it's gluten free! She really enjoyed the crisp and flavor. I snuck a few bites of her brussel sprouts and they were phenomenal. She also had the Glazed Yams but they were blown away by the brussel sprouts. So my Wife and I went to Home Depot and upon leaving the parking lot she spotted Julep. The name alone had us both intrigued. She said let me check this place out on Yelp. The reviews were good and I quickly pulled over so we could check out the menu. The menu item descriptions were great and we said hey it's lunch time let's pick some up to go home with. We ordered the Smoked and Deep Fried Old Bay wings, along with the Southern Egg Rolls, Basket of Biscuits, and the Brussel Sprouts topped with Pecan and Goat Cheese. First off, the Wings were amazing. Just the right amount of smokey and sweet flavor and then they fried it if the smoking wasn't enough. They were jumbo sized and delicious. Second came the Southern Egg Rolls stuffed with Pulled Pork,Black Eyed Peas, Collard Greens, Cream Cheese and Jack Cheese. At first we both thought, cream cheese? But then you take a bite and you understand why every ingredient was added to this little piece of heaven. Only one of the two in the container made it home uneaten. The 2 biscuits we ordered were HUGE! Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The honey butter that comes with them adds the icing on the biscuit "cake". I mean you could eat these biscuits on their own but then you add the honey butter and pow it hits you, these two were meant for each other. Last but certainly not least we had the Brussel Sprouts topped with Candied Pecans, Bacon, and Goat Cheese. I have recently fallen in love with brussel sprouts, I like them prepared various ways but adding candied pecans, goat cheese and of course bacon you have a flavor explosion bursting in your mouth. I can't wait until they open MD back up and we are able to dine in at Julep. This food was great! Julep serves southern style cuisine in Annapolis. I've visited the restaurant twice before COVID and twice after. On my last two visits which occurred two days apart, I ordered the following items: Friday, May 29th - Smoked wings Greens Cup of Crab Chowder Hush puppies Sunday, May 31st - Smoked wings Greens Bowl of Crab Chowder Biscuits Let me just say, I love their wings. They are a nice size and are cooked perfectly with a smoky taste. I usually order them "naked" with a side of ranch dressing. The greens are also delicious. There are bits of smoked chicken in the greens which give them a great taste. I can eat a whole pot of those greens. The crab chowder was enjoyable. It had a nice amount of crab meat in it with bits of corn kernels. It wasn't too thick and was savory with a hint of sweetness. My disappointment came from my first post Covid visit. I ordered online and pulled up to the pick up area. I didn't have to wait long but when I got home, I noticed that my sauces were not included with my order as specified. On my second post Covid visit, I made sure to walk up to the door and request that my items were included. When it was brought out, I checked it and everything was there. However, when I got home and started eating the biscuit, there was some brown paper embedded in it. I had to pull it out of my mouth to inspect what I had just eaten. I also noticed that the cup of crab chowder ordered on Friday and the bowl of crab chowder ordered on Sunday were served in the same size container. There was not much difference in the amount of soup in the containers but there is a $2 price difference. I would suggest that you order the cup to save money. This restaurant is not inexpensive, and I am disappointed that they are not paying attention to detail and are failing to include all of the items with the orders. OMG, what can I say, but YUM! This place far exceeded my expectations. My son and I were looking for a good soul food restaurant, and because we had been let down by a few in our area, we decided to venture out today and find a good spot. We went solely off the reviews and pictures, but they did not do any justice... Let's start off with the warm greeting we received as soon as we walked in. It was like she was expecting us, and we didn't have reservations, so her greeting was definitely genuine. We were seated immediately and the server came out with lemon and water about 5 minutes after we sat down. We were given about 15 minutes to go over the menu and then our server came back to take our order. Nothing was rushed. I ordered the meatloaf entree with mashed potatoes and green beans with a sweet tea and my son got the fish and chips with a sprite. We had the fried ribs as an entree... When I say I've never cleaned my plate like I did here! OMG! Every bite of food was full of flavor and the ribs completely fell off the bone! Idk what was in the sauce for the fried ribs but I could eat that just by itself! This place is a serious vibe and the food is sooo good. I will definitely be back. 10/10 for sure! read more

I've eaten here twice: once a couple of weeks after they opened, and a second time a couple of weeks ago. The first visit went alright, except for the service. The place was slammed and our server was running from table to table. He would disappear from the floor for very long periods of time. He was wearing a different colored shirt than the other servers, so whether he was in training or was filling in for someone because they were slammed, I don't know. He was very polite and friendly, though. We waited for a long time for him to come over initially. Our appetizer arrived about 20 minutes after ordering and our entrees came out about 10 minutes after that. Our table got crowded with all the plates, sauces, and condiments. My dad asked to substitute the hushpuppies and butter for the salad that came with his meal. Our server said he'd wasn't sure if we could make substitutions and offered to ask. My dad told him not to worry and to box up the side salad. My dad and I got our meals first. We were missing my mom's salad and my dad's side salad. Both arrived to the table about 3 minutes later. When we finished our meals, we requested to-go boxes, which also took a very long time to receive. Someone other than our server came to our table to give them to us. We asked our server twice for a lid for the salad dressing and were never brought one. We left the dressing on the plate, which he picked up to clear the table - he never noticed we never got a lid. We did get refills without asking, which was nice. During our meal the owner made the rounds in the dining area to thank people for coming in. He stopped at our table, introduced himself, thanked us for dining with them and talked a little bit about the restaurant. We ordered dessert and requested the check - all of which took a little under a half an hour. We paid in cash so we didn't have wait any longer. Food ordered over two visits: - Chesapeake Crab Dip: I agree with another review that says the bread should be cut all the way or use a different bread altogether. The bread is good, but it's not cut through, so it ends up getting flattened and shredded by the time you tear off a piece. The dip was pretty good. I've ordered it twice and the quality has remained. There was a decent amount of crab throughout. - Charlotte's Homemade Pot Pie w/ side of hush puppies: The pot pie juices were pretty thin, which was disappointing. My dad enjoyed the chicken and veggies and loved the crust. The hush puppies were really good. The butter that comes with it was delicious. - Chicken Fried Steak w/ mashed potatoes and gravy, side of Brussels sprouts: I loved this. The dredge was perfect and made the steak crispy and crunchy. The mashed potatoes were okay. They honestly reminded me of KFC's mashed potatoes (that's not a bad thing). The Brussels sprouts were great. I wish it had more candied pecans and goat cheese. - Tomato Salad: Tomatoes were juicy and there was plenty of spinach and toppings. - Chocolate Mousse cake: Delicious! The cake was moist. - Meatloaf Entree, mashed potatoes, gravy, side of Brussels sprouts: My neighbor loved this dish. She remarked that the meatloaf reminded her of her Grandmother's. She enjoyed the mashed potatoes and gravy. She devoured the Brussels sprouts. - Wings w/ side of mac and cheese: If you're wondering if these are the same wings they have at "Hideaway", they are! My mom ordered the "naked". They had lots of flavor, and the dipping sauce was good. She liked the mac and cheese as well. It was creamy and cheesy. - Smoked Chicken Breast sandwich w/ mashed potatoes, gravy, & pickle: I wouldn't order this again. The chicken was a bit dry. The outside was kind of charred and dry. The toppings were very fresh. The bun was delicious. The mashed potatoes tasted different from the first time I tasted them. They were okay. I liked the gravy. - Meatloaf Sandwich w/ a side of hush puppies: This was ordered to go. My dad enjoyed the meatloaf. He thought the bread could have been toasted a bit more, but liked the sandwich nonetheless. The second visit went much more smoothly, and I am happy to report that the service we received was excellent. Three of us came in on a Thursday around 11:30am. The restaurant wasn't crowded. We sat at a table near a side door. We had to drape a coat over the door handles because there was a huge draft. We could have moved to another table, but one person in our party has difficulty walking and she was already settled into her seat, so we didn't want to move her. Brian was our server and he was a delight. He was upbeat, friendly, and had a great personality. He mentioned they were still tweaking the menu, so items could be added or removed. There is plenty of parking in their lot. The lot can get a bit hectic because there is an Outback right next door. Their building is bright green, so you can't miss it. Food was mostly good: Fried ribs starter was excellent. Chili, ok; it is thinner than I like. Cornbread, delicious and moist. Smoked fried chicken, I didn't care for; the pecan wood flavor was overwhelming. Green bean sides were so good; could eat a plate of those. The collard greens and Mac n cheese were also really good. Brisket was really good, not the best I've ever had but pretty high on the list. Drinks: tried both the lemon blueberry and the crushes and thought the lemon blueberry was better. Also did the dessert sampler with strawberry sorbet, bourbon pecan ice cream, key lime pie and the chocolate cake. My favorite was the key lime pie. The chocolate cake would've been better just as the chocolate mousse and ganache; the cake layer was very dry and just added an off putting texture. My dining partner really liked the strawberry sorbet; I thought it was ok but wouldn't get again. The bourbon pecan ice cream was ok as well. Service was friendly and attentive without being annoying. They also gave honest opinions and good advice for first time diners. Lively atmosphere but not too loud even on a crowded weekend evening. The decor is nice, but the building definitely has some moisture issues evident in the paint, ceiling and drywall. Definitely would come again though. read more

Where to start? First, the young lady delivering the curbside pickup orders was friendly. Suggestion: figure out a better process. Next, the food. Fairly disappointing. The smoked fried chicken was about the size of a pigeon. Have you ever seen a chicken thigh and leg that's 4" long (see photos)?! Not in the south! But that's OK because it was dry and not really that good. Mashed potatoes and gravy - a high school cafeteria scoop with a minuscule amount of gravy - just OK. Cornbread - some of the worst I've ever had. It crumbled into a million pieces when I tried to pick it up. I ended up trying to eat it with a spoon, but it wasn't tasty enough and I just threw it away. My wife had the shrimp and grits. She said it was OK, but wouldn't get it again. Don't worry dear, we won't make this mistake twice. Side note: two side dishes came with my entree ($16). Additional sides are $3 each unless you get the "premium" sides - then there's an upcharge. I would have been pissed off if I had paid $3 for either of these sides! Maybe "premium" means it has some flavor? All in all, I'm not a fan. I've had southern cooking and this ain't it. read more

Figured we would give this place a shot while driving through Annapolis. It was worth it! Due to Covid they were only offering dinning outside. The staff did a wonderful job with everything. The food was great. We were a party of three and it was busier than I thought it would be with all the restrictions and only outdoor seating. We ordered the Country Fried steak with mashed potatoes and mac n cheese, hush puppies and smoked fried chicken. Everything was good, no complaints at all. Would eat here again. Wish I would have remembered to get the chicken spicy! The country fried steak was hard to cut with plastic ware, but that is not their fault, it's the restrictions. TL:DR - Julep is a must go. As of this review, they had been about just about 3 weeks. Their food is great and customer service is top notch! A group of 6 of us stopped into Julep after UNC beat the heck out of Temple football during the Military Bowl. As let down Temple fans, we were starting to get hangry and needed food stat. Julep was found on Yelp because of its close proximity to the stadium and hotel. The previous reviews left us a little apprehensive, but wanted to give a new restaurant a shot. The owner, Bob, came over to greet us when we were settled. It was really nice to hear his menu favorites and how things were going. We arrived happy hour and were happy to take advantage of some drink and food specials. $6 crabby fries? Sign us up. They were GOOD. 2 orders was perfect for 6 hungry people to hold us over. Entrees: 4 of the 6 ordered the Smoked Fried Chicken (1 ordered it spicy). 1 ordered the Memphis Burger and 1 ordered the Ultimate Pulled Pork sandwich. Sides choices included the greens, Mac and cheese, hush puppies, mashed potatoes and potato salad. The greens were a group favorite. The Mac and cheese was good, but nothing special. Our waitress was great. Very attentive and funny without being overbearing or rushing the group. Bob come back around at the end to check in and make sure the meal was enjoyed. Julep Southern Kitchen is really nice, first time I went there was a couple of issues, they had just established the location for service and it was compared to another restaurant they were supposed to be apart of. The restaurant is pretty spacious, Servers are great and they don't have a problem helping each other out with the tables, Management comes and asks you are you enjoying your meal and drinks. I was surprised with the quality of the food if you need and want a Southern Kitchen dinner don't hesitate to stop in and get a meal. I always get the Sampler there is enough food for me and my wife to enjoy and trust me she gets the Waffled Pig or the Pot pie and we enjoy it. The sides,The sides,The sides. Go hungry. You'll need the room. What's the difference between this place and others like it? Clearly, great care is taken in how the food is prepared. For example, I could tell that the catfish was prepared in fresh oil at the perfect temperature. Most likely, the different fried foods are prepared in different fryers, unlike in many other places where the chicken and fish are prepared in the same oil. We drove here from DC and it was well worth the trip. We've eaten some good meals, but this was the most satisfying meal we've enjoyed in a long time. read more

Julep is so amazing. It's my favorite BBQ spot in Annapolis. I've ordered from them four times now and each time been impressed with the options. They offer takeout through seamless and others as well as pickup. The outdoor patio is usually busy with people but they offer take out delivery to your car along the entrance. I've had the chicken pot pie, all versions of their BBQ chicken, coleslaw, baked beans and the chicken sandwich. The takeout containers are always well packed and you never feel like you're missing out on something by now eating in. Pork Steak. Two words never tasted so good. I became a Yelp preacher after having this dish! Imagine a 24 hour apple juice marination and a juicy steak cooked at 500 degree Fahrenheit. Trust me you will not be disappointed by this entree special. The pork steak is covered with onion straws and is fork tender. I was full from the pork steak alone and the special also come with a side. Don't forget to try the Southern Egg Rolls and hush puppies with honey butter. I prefer the desserts here versus the ones at its sister location. The Pecan Bourbon Pie was everything good about bourbon and pecans all wrapped in a pie. What a perfect marriage. Holy smokes, I can't say more about this place!!!! When you first walk in, the smell of BBQ demands that you say "Mmmm, that smells good!" The modern decore gives off an industrial yet warm and cozy vibe. The bartenders are bright, attentive, and knowledgeable with some witty banter. Management was on top of it, with a smile. It was pleasant and they did a great job making it feel comfortable and helping you forget where you were sitting. Our server was a very pleasant lady who was a true professional server. We had some specific requests and she not only took time to listen but made sure they were all met. The food was delivered, hot and well plated with portions that were oversized (in my opinion). First time dining here but we weren't impressed. However, I see my fellow Elite Yelpers enjoyed it. The service wasn't that good. It took about 10 mins for us to even be acknowledged. The remoulade for the tomatoes was salty. We requested no goat cheese for the Brussels sprouts but they included it anyway. I'm not sure why it's called a southern kitchen, just because you serve collard greens and label entrees with "Texas" doesn't mean you're southern. I lived in the state of Texas and my family hails from Louisiana and that food missed the mark for down home southern cuisine. Customer service wasn't great and the service was slow, maybe we picked the wrong day and waiter. Not to mentioned, they gave me a to go cup for my Cream of Crab with Corn soup with no bag. I ended up giving it to my mom and she thought it was delicious. The drink (Cucumber cocktail) that I ordered was tasty and refreshing.
