I'm going to be an outlier here and leave an honest review. True that there are no ice cream places in the neighborhood, so it's not like you have better choices, but the flavors are hit or miss. Chocolate and salted caramel are no gos. The chocolate has a very weak chocolate flavor - honestly tastes like chocolate shaved ice or chocolate sorbet. Not rich and creamy and barely tastes of chocolate. The chocolate chocolate shower is no better. The flakes are nice, but chocolate flavor is weak. Salted caramel tastes of soured milk, but is simultaneously too sweet. Best flavor was the coffee and cream. Great idea for a flavor and it delivered well. Nice and creamy, not too sweet. Staff is very confused about sizing, probably need more training. Very expensive for the quantity and size of scoops even as compared to the other ice cream shops in Manhattan. 3 scoop is cost $13, whereas the other independent ice cream shops charge around $10-11. Space is tiny, 4 stools for high top seating. Staff is nice though. read more

I got a split scoop here with a couple flavors - salted caramel and mint shower. The mint shower was just fine - it was your standard mint chocolate chip ice cream. Nothing special there. What I do want to talk about though, is the salted caramel. This is the best salted caramel ice cream I've ever had. It's not really due to the texture - the texture is your run-of-the-mill ice cream. What's truly insane is the flavor. This scoop of salted caramel was deeply salty, astoundingly creamy, and amazingly sweet. This combination of salt and sweetness is not something I've seen done better in any salted caramel I've had before - and it's my favorite ice cream flavor. It is truly just mind-blowingly delicious. If I come back here, I am getting as many scoops of this flavor as I can. Overall, while the other flavor was ok, the salted caramel was good enough that I'll think about this for a while. 9/10 read more

I went to this excellent new ice cream spot twice a while back; once before going to the pretty good Ernesto's nearby, and once with some of the folks after said dinner. Regarding the other time, someone loved the Salted Caramel, and I have heard their ice cream sandwiches are delicious as well. Anyway, while they are new, they're very much old-school in terms of flavors and ice cream texture. The very friendly women working here gave me a few samples before I chose, and I tried the Coffee and Butter Pecan, which I eventually ordered as a small as I was going to dinner later. It's $6.50 for said size or an extra $1.50 if you split, which is a bit pricey, but they give a sizable scoop. In general, the ice cream's texture was excellent, being creamy, smooth, and not too sweet. The coffee was very tasty, being slightly bitter, and would have been my choice normally. However, the butter pecan here was extraordinary. I have had butter pecan from a ton of spots as it's one of my favorite flavors, and this was probably the best I've had. There was ingeniously some salted pecan brittle inside, which added a wonderful extra crunch and texture, along with the sweetness and nuttiness. I would highly recommend. Excellent ice cream place. It's no-nonsense old-school ice cream done the right way. I'll very likely buy a pint from here if not a few. read more

I usually begin my reviews with the food, but this time I have to begin with the service. This is a small family owned establishment, the owner who also works the counter is the daughter of Julia Jean and I believe was inspired to create an ice cream shop for her kids which I think is quite impressive and deserves recognition. The owner was super passionate about her ice cream, giving me a bunch of recommendations and letting me try as many flavors as I wanted (like, actually). A lot of families with kids were entering and she was greeting each one with a ton of positive energy. Overall fantastic vibes, definitely recommend supporting her! On to the ice cream, I did enjoy the ice creams thickness but I thought it might have a been a bit too thick - I think it would be better if it was a bit lighter and runnier. The vanilla with strawberry swirl and speculoos cookies was a fantastic flavor, the speculoos cookies were a great addition to the taste and texture of the ice cream. I do think the ice cream could be even better if the strawberry flavor popped out a bit more though. I also have to note that I thought all of the other flavors I sampled were kind of mediocre, so I'd personally recommend to get this flavor. 4.5/5 read more

Stopped by Julia Jean's to treat myself to somw ice cream after dinner! Loved how the texture was still smooth and flavors milky without being too creamy or heavy. I got to try the choc choc shower which features chocolate ice cream with chocolate shards. Loved the ratio of topping to ice cream. The cookies and cream is a classic and had a range of oreo crumbs to actual cookie bites. Staff were super nice and friendly. The decor reminds me of old school ice cream parlor with the black/white newspaper showcased and font of the menu. Some bar seating available inside but otherwise would recommend take out! This is truly a local ice cream founded by a remarkable woman who lives in the same neighborhood. The flavors are classic, the ambience old school nostalgic, but the quality is right up there. The texture is so airy and creamy and smooth. I felt like I was eating a delicious cloud, while on cloud nine. Our two scoops of mint shower (chocolate shavings instead of chips for quicker dissolving) and vanilla with speculoos and strawberry swirls were excellent. The owner and her assistant were so sweet and friendly. They were patient in answering our questions and generous in letting us sample multiple flavors. We were lucky in going during a quiet time in the afternoon and were able to enjoy our scoops in the cute shop with charming photographs and decor. Seating is limited. Definitely worth a return. They make ice cream sandwiches, as well as ice cream cakes (customizable with an advanced order). read more

Located in an unassuming corner of the lower east side, Julia Jean's is an inspired old-fashioned ice cream parlor serving up classics like Sundaes and Milkshakes. Employees were very nice and offered us samples and a loyalty punch card. The flavor I decided on, apple cider donut has a great texture and was rich without being overwhelming. I appreciate the photos and memorabilia decorating the walls, which really sets it apart aesthetically from other ice cream shops in nyc. Will be back to try other flavors soon read more

After hearing about Julia Jean's on IG I knew I wanted to stop by. It's in a quiet little part of the LES not far from a bunch of places including The Pickle Guys, Kossar's, and Sugar Sweet Sunshine. The guy helping me at the counter was very friendly and immediately asked if I wanted to try any flavors. He told me what flavors were in the case and I tried the vanilla with biscoff and strawberry swirl. I loved it, so good. I wanted to bring home a pint of it but they didn't have any in the freezer so I got a scoop for now and took home a pint of Salted Caramel. The owner was there too and she was so nice and helpful. The store was cute inside with room for a couple counter seats. I definitely will be back again soon! read more

While this is my favorite neighborhood ice cream shop (and I consider myself an ice cream person), It's winter so I had to try their HOT CHOCOLATE. OMG! It was exactly what I hoped it would be. Thick, not too sweet, yummy rich chocolate with a couple of toasted home made marshmallows on top (or you can skip the marshmallow but... why? Or you can get home made whipped cream). And while you're there give their mint shower ice cream a try. Melty chocolate in a perfectly creamy mint ice cream. Mmmmmmm! On a map, it might look like Julia Jean's is a bit on the outskirts of the island. The storefront might not look very big or flashy. There may not be a long line of people waiting outside who are trying to cash in on the latest social media craze. But I swear, your taste buds will thank you. The staff was really friendly, and helped us navigate the different flavor choices. Ultimately, I decided on a medium-sized cup with two flavors- coffee and cherry vanilla. I'm still thinking about it right now, it was so tasty. The coffee ice cream was some of the best I've ever had- it wasn't sickeningly sweet, it tasted of a delicious, aromatic coffee flavor of the best kind, with almost a chicory-esque note to it (kind of like New Orleans iced coffee or South Indian filter coffee). The cherry vanilla was delightful. It was the perfect blend of tart, bright berry with slightly floral vanilla. It reminded me of the legend that was the erstwhile berry compote at Van Leeuwen's (if you know, you know). I'm coming back here, soon.
