We did a mystery picnic and one of our stops was the Julian Candy Basket. It is cute little candy shop at the edge of the Main Street. We informed the staff that we were there for a picnic pickup and he let us know we could choose two packages of fudge and four truffles! He took the time to explain all of the truffle flavors and fudge, gave recommendations, and informed us that his mother in law makes all the fudge. We let him know it was our first time in town and he also gave us directions to a Vista point he recommended. His customer service was excellent! I did a lap around the shop itself, but didn't check out everything in detail. It looked like they had a large variety of different candies, either packaged or sold by the pound. What a superb experience. Greeted by Dustin and he was pleasant to chat with. This store has a lot of yummy goodies and the best part is that it coast $2.50 to $2.60 per quarter pound of loose candy. We grabbed a whole bunch of ginger chews and salt water taffy to much on the drive home. They also have freshly made fudge and sugar free candies. My family has been going to this candy store for years every time we visit Julian they have a very wide selection of different candies. The prices are very reasonable. It is family run. I highly recommend going here if you visit Julian or if you are a candy lover, like we are. The store is always neat and clean. It does have a new location in the last few years they have moved I like the new location even better my kids love this place and so do I there's something there for everyone their chocolate is delicious and so are all their delicious Gummies. I taken my two nieces one is 18 now and the other 14 This is one of there favorite store to visit in julian California. We're I live. Located on main street. Yes I hightly recommend . We went into this store looking specifically for candy cigars for my friends Halloween costume. They had it. The gentleman running the store was so friendly and nice. FYI they have moved as of late last year... they are down the street next to the B*B on the East side of Main in a green building. Still in the family but different owners. It's a little smaller but I still spent too much but got some great goodies. Their yelp location is correct on the map. This is one of the places on the main strip that caters to the tourists. Ain't gonna lie, some of the candy prices in packs seemed pricey but I get it. Any candy and I do mean any candy as well as those of our youth that they may not make or cannot find in standard grocery or liquor stores are here in this shop. Anything from old school button candy to Pop Rocks, to Zagnuts and Oh Henry! (both of which you usually cant find) are easily available at this store. Are you a fan of old school soda's such as Jolt or the old soda fountain type fruit drinks such as Black Cherry Soda or Blueberry soda or even soda made with original sugar cane sugar is also available here in a large variety. There is so many items to choose from it is incredible. I felt like a kid in a candy store....literally but it is actually so much more. To see some of the nostalgic candy and soda's is a treat you cant find in too many places these days outside of a few soda fountain type stores (becoming a real rarity). This is THE spot that all children and kids at heart want to go to spot. Its up the stairs if youre new to the area. Its 2.49 a pound and is mostly hard candy or taffy. It has a lot of unique individual candies for a tourist price. I give it three stars because I spent apx 8 dollars on one of every flavor of salt water taffy. As I ate through the stash with in the next few days I found about half to be stale and hard. I dont want old candy at upscale price... But its a tourist trap so come on in! read more

The Candy Basket is a very small shop but they make great use of their space and you, despite the comfy confines, you don't feel too crowded inside. This place is the BEST candy store I have ever been in, by far! They have a little bite of every candy you have every grown up on, seen, heard about, talked about, etc. etc. I think I found every candy I grew up on. They still sell Sen Sen! Remember Candy Dots, they have those too. They also stock pile some salt water taffy. And make sure you grab a bottle in their cold refrigerator, because they have the BIGGEST selection of "unique" bottle drinks I have ever seen. I would say they have around 30 different bottled root beers and they are basically all priced at $2 a pop! I really enjoyed their fudge, which they gave out free samples of. The candy baskets are priced at $1.75 per 1/4 pound (with no minimum). read more

I would usually rate this place much higher, because I always enjoy their selection of candies and treats However on my last visit the Taffy (which I ALWAYS come for) was rock hard. Yes I know Taffy is a firm treat, but it felt teeth breaking hard, which is unusual because the taffy there has always been softer. Maybe it wasn't selling as fast as it normally does and was older stock I left taffyless and disappointed I still recommend a visit though. Candy Basket is on the second floor of a plaza, so it just doesn't have the same charm as the Candy Mine. However, their selection is better. The stores in this plaza are open a half hour to an hour later which is nice when it's 5 p.m., and you don't want to eat dinner just yet. read more

My first time in Julian in a long time and the Candy Basket was our first stop. A sweet little sweets shop on the upper level of the shopping center. The aisles are full of candies of here and yesteryear. It's been awhile since I've oggled over handbagged bulk candy. On top of all the sweet treats they sell retro lunchboxes and knick knacks that leave you to decide is this a want or a need..and having to eenie meenie miney mo the items in your hand before you checkout. The lady running the store was very, well, sweet and helpful with any candy questions you may have. And if you're lucky you might get to try some of they're homemade fudge. Mmm. I fell asleep on the way to Julian, and I wasn't informed until we were heading back home that the ginger chews they sell at the Candy Basket help with motion sickness. I wish I had known. It was to say the least, a bumpy ride. The funniest moment in the candy basket was when my friends and I were paying for our goodies. I figured that some merchants may have minimums for credit purchases so I brought cash moneys. My friend forgot her wallet at home so her boyfriend used his card but they were a dollar shy of the minimum. Luckily there was a plethora of candy surrounding the register area to add on to make your minimum. Or you could dash back and get the other candy you decided to put away because it would have been too much. You win either way. A good way to kick off the Juluan reunion tour. Sweetest people who genuinely care about kids and have a GREAT selection of old and new candy. My daughter had all kinds of questions about "how sour is this on a 1 to 10 scale" and they were great about answering this and many other 6yr old questions. My son got sick in the store from the heat and twisty drive earlier and I was beyond embarrassed- but they were so kind to us and only cared about his feelings- not the mess he made. I can't say enough about this candy store. I'm used to going in stores in the OC and the people watch you like hawks, judging the kids and giving us parents anxiety (its hard to keep kids from touching EVERYTHING in a candy shop) but the people at the Candy Basket are very sweet and enjoy kids and families. This place isn't bad I guess for Julian but it could be a little better. They had a nice selection of candy new and retro. I got some mini lemon heads and my mom got some sugar free candy and some retro ones. Once we got home and my mom ate one, it was super hard. Couldn't even bite into it. Not good. Then, she tried some of her sugar free candy and same thing, rock hard. Major bummer. My lemon heads were good though so can't complain about that. It must be that sugar free candy just doesn't sell that much so it's older. Prices are okay. Service was nice. They just need to restock more often and bring in more variety. Didn't really see a nice variety of jelly beans so I was kinda bummed about that too. Probably won't be back. Also, bring cash because they charge a fee if it's not over a certain amount. read more
