A cute little candy store located on the main street of Julian in an alley way. They have a huge selection of a different types of candies, taffy, chocolate, and more. The lady who worked there was really nice and offered us a sample of the fudge, which was delicious! This is definitely a fun place to explore if you're in Julian. I wish they had bags that you could fill with the candy you want, but instead they sell the candy already packaged in bags. read more

A lot of typical candies and a few random and old school candies. The best part is not the candy, but the pop selection, most are $2/bottle. When I got there, my son and I were the only ones in the store, I heard someone in a heated discussion in a back room, which was language not appropriate for a child friendly setting, the worker came out surprised to see me. HOLLY CANDY batman. This store is small but packed with candy candy candy. They had a pretty big selection of different candys. unusual ones like squirrel nut zipper chews, beamans sour cherry gum. Its a small store so it can get packed . The prices are very affordable and you wont leave broke or unhappy. I let my 3 year old walk around and pick a piece or two and it took an hour or so. From time to time I use their candies for decorating cakes at Candied Apple Pastry Co. These folks are only a block away, and the selection and quality are first rate! Their wrapped ginger candy from The Ginger People are my personal faves. I often send folks there who are feeling a little carsick from the curvy mountain journey to Julian. Compared to places like sweet factory this place does not sell expensive candy at all. Reasonably priced and tons of selections, inlcuding candy I have not seen before...ie...Gummy Bear Krunch. For a small candy store, we weren't expecting much. But for such a small space, they seem to pack all the necessary goodies, including some obscure ones, as well as some wonderful choice items I've never seen before but HAD to try. The guy who works there, owns it maybe, was a downright candy connoisseur. He directed us to JUST the confections we were craving. Great stop in a wonderful small town. Walking and roaming through the candy aisles brought back childhood memories...all sweet of course! It was definitely nostalgic especially with the holidays around the corner. My boyfriend was so thrilled to find that they carry ribbon candy, a rare find, bringing him back to the past...even those holiday stripe hard candies, they carry. They also carry organic and sugar free candies. So much options! The old school classic music playing, like Frankie Valley & the Four Seasons, added to the ambiance in the candy shop. The owner was so nice to offer us to try one of the ginger candies we were checking out. And the woman over the counter was helpful and very pleasant to chat with. Located on the second floor above Julian Bakery, Candy Basket is mainly a candy store, but they also sell themed lunchboxes and mugs. They have a very good selection, but they're slightly overpriced per pound. But since this located in a tourist destination, it makes sense. The store is a bit small and can get pretty cramped and stuffy inside when it's busy, not a good mix with the smell of candy. It is worth a look inside to see what they have, and service is really good. read more

So here's the thing. We never even made it inside the store. A group of people including my wife and I waited outside. The sign said it opened at 10am and folks were eagerly waiting. Kids were excited and running around and playing. A lady came out of the door and said "Out of the way!" Everybody just kind of stopped and stared. The lady had a few colorful flags that she was hanging up outside. As she went back inside a few of the kids tried to go in too. She grabbed the door and said, "We're not open yet!" (even though it was 10am already). The kids visibly looked scared or hurt. She came out again and set up some more stuff and then walked back in and turned the sign to say 'Open' and then slammed the screen door. People were just staring in disbelief and nobody knew if that meant the store was open now. People started to whisper about it. I said, "Well, I'm not going inside if they're going to be mean like that!" and then my wife and I walked away. They lost at least 2 customers that day if not more as I saw several people second guessing it. read more

It's kind of funny that I love candy stores because I don't really love candy. I think it's because I love nostalgia. In any case, Candy Basket is a tiny little store located on the upper level of a rustic shopping building, and it's worth a stop if your sweet tooth is not overloaded by all the pies and baked goods you can find in Julian. Kids will love it because all the sugary jawbreakers and hard candies and taffy and caramels are located in baskets close to the floor. They have a limited selection of throwback chocolate bars like any candy store worth its salt, as well as a nice, tidy section of white, milk, and dark chocolate covered nuts, mints, raisins, cookies, pretzels, what have you. I recommend the chocolate covered cookie dough! My favorite thing at Candy Basket is the fudge...lots of flavors in a few different sizes of bags so you can buy a little or a lot. The peanut butter chocolate chip and standard chocolate walnut were delicious. Every quaint little mountain town needs a candy shop that brings you back to childhood, and this is Julian's. read more

I visited Julian this week for the first time and wanted to visit the candy stores trying to find an old taffy noone carries anymore. While visiting the CB they said they had a "new" taffy (but were out of it). It was the same taffy I've been trying to find for several years. It is vanilla taffy with peanut butter in the center. Can't wait till they get it in again. Until then I settled for an Aba Zaba bar which is relatively the same thing. They did have the Aba Zaba. Their candy is fresh. I also got another favorite from the past, chocolate covered honey comb. Love it and need some more.... :) oh, and their fudge is very good also. They offer smaller size bags of candy so you can get more of a variety at a reasonable price. This is my favorite candy store in Julian! read more
