The lady that served us has obviously not enjoyed her job in a very long time. I got the scallops and they were obviously Shark meat. I have eaten here many times, the cook SAM today must be having issues. I ordered the all the quail you can eat dinner. The fried quail was good. Then reordered the baked quail. Usually the best. Today it was terrible . Black both sides, burned into carbon. And of course the cook sent it out, best side up. I order another to replace it and it came out almost as bad. Decided to take my girlfriend tonight as I had a great experience when i was young at the Lees Summit location. I was greeted by the owner with a lot of unwanted touching my girlfriend noticed this and was also uncomfortable not sure why he felt the need to touch me so much as he kept rubbing my shoulder and arm while leading us to the table mind you im a 27 year old male. Next was the food, it was below average, would rather get some frozen fish sticks and butterfly shrimp at target for a quarter of the price. We both received a not so great case of food poisoning. My jumbo fried shrimp was delicious & hot. The hush puppies, slaw & beans were fine, but beans could have been hotter temperature wise. My server was fast & efficient. Used to live in Olathe for over 30 years & have been here often. Unfortunately, place looks tired inside & out. Parking lot littered with trash, weeds & cigarette butts. This is a hole in the wall kinda place. It reminds me of the Ozarks. But I recently went on a Sunday which is all you can eat Crab legs, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, fried chicken, fried crawfish tails, and fried catfish. But I mainly just at the crab legs. those were pretty good, the crawfish tails were good and the catfish is good too. I don't like the sides they bring out for you though, you usually get hushpuppies, cole slaw, and some beans. My husband got the gizzards and he didn't like it. Long John Silvers is better than this place. It was very slow when we arrived. We were quickly directed to sit down however we're pretty sure we were forgotten about until we got up and said something. We decided to share a large platter that was over $20, but there was a $5 service charge to split any dish. In my husband's and my entire life we have never been to a restaurant that charges extra to share a meal. We both ordered the fried catfish and it was ok. The only thing that was palatable. I ordered the stuffed crab, which honestly didn't have hardly ANY crab. Maybe like two STRINGS/SLIVERS of crab not chunks not meat. My husbands meal was even more disappointing. The fried clams were like chewing on 'latex gloves'. The potato wedges tasted Iike they had just came out of the dirt. The crawfish 'tasted like they were raised in toilet water'. Overall the service was terrible. The food was awful and we almost left after being told there was a fee for sharing meals but sadly we didn't. Holy Moly. Where do I begin? The start I guess is a great place. The owner was present at opening and greeted both me and my wife before officially opening the restaurant. He invited us inside so we didn't have to wait outside. That I did appreciate and I did take into consideration when rating the restaurant. The server and the owner got our table ready and brought us back to private dining area in the back of the restaurant. We had a group of 12 people, so we needed a lot of space to all sit together. The server was great when it was just me and my wife. She was able to handle getting my iced tea and my wife's Dr. Pepper. She brought out hush puppies which were just okay. Over the next 5 minutes the rest of the 10 people in our party showed up and this is where everything kind of when to crap. The server was never really bad though just mediocre. The owner was present and checked on us a couple of times, but was a little over bearing. Just make sure the server is doing her job and leave it at that don't try and do her job too. That's what you have her there for man. The ordering was the next part and that was a real treat. It was a bit abrasive and direct on the servers part albeit effective. She was able to quickly get our orders down. I ordered something on the menu that I suppose I shouldn't have seared scallops. And you know what? I should have known better. I'm sophisticated enough to understand that $14 scallops are not going to be prepared correctly at a strip mall restaurant called Jumpin' Catfish. I ordered a salad bar trip with my meal which I thought would be filled with greens and good toppings. Instead what I found was iceberg lettuce that was hardly chopped (I mean chunky leafs) with slivers of carrots in. A Scarce few actual salad toppings mostly just dressings and salad garnish croutons, crackers, etc as far as veggies it was cucumbers and carrots?? Come on make that salad bar better! They did have some cottage cheese and fruit on the salad bar as well. The cottage cheese was good. It came from a container from a US Foods or PFG I'm sure so it's hard to mess that up. The fruit though disgusting! The grapes were ok but the larger sliced melons and orange was nasty. It was starting turn. When you see stuff like that on a salad bar it's a bad sign! It means business is bad. I don't think the scallops were even remotely fresh. The scallops tasted as if they had been frozen thawed and frozen again and then thawed out again and then frozen again. Then they were thawed out again and then thawed in and microwave and cooked in a pan for like 5-10 mins on each side. They were the most rubbery nasty tasting scallops I've had the displeasure of eating in my entire adult life. Maybe I'm a food snob? Perhaps, but if you can't properly prepare a dish just don't have it on your menu. It's embarrassing to the people who order it and embarrassing to the owners, servers, cooks and manager. To give some feedback on the catfish though! Everyone else who got catfish said it was good. My wife got the boiled shrimp and she also had serious complaints about the lack of any type of flavor or options to season it once it reached the table. The shrimp like my scallops had been boiled far to long. Sigh! Big Big Big Big Sigh! The problem with dish's like shrimp scallops here is just that you can't get a proper taste on freezer to fryer and freezer to pan food. It just doesn't taste right. The decor and lighting look like something I'd see from a early 1980's hunting club. The tacky ceiling fans with ducks, the booths that have animals on the backs of them, the wooden tables and chairs. It felt old and rickety. What was especially creepy were the dead animals in the cases and the mounted deers heads around the restaurant. I wonder what would happen if this place had a face lift with updated decor, lighting and seating? A new updated and revamped menu. That didn't rely so much on a deep-fryer and a few more option to jazz the catfish up a bit. My suggestion is to skip this place altogether your pallet and wallet will both thank you. JC had a Groupon that was trending so, I decided to check them out. Let me start off by saying the service was outstanding. Ms. Belinda was a sweetheart. I felt like I was at the Lake of the Ozarks with the decor and everything. Very different. I suppose it goes it with the theme of the restaurant. Now, the food :) my husband and I don't eat everyone's coleslaw but, their coleslaw was delicious. Perfect texture and just the right amount of sweetness. You have to try it out. The Hushpuppies were just as good. Catfish fillets...good...lemon pepper tilapia...good. I ordered some boiled shrimp and was a little disappointed. It lacked flavor and had a weird taste that I couldn't get down with so, I gave some away to my husband and wasted the rest. You get so much food for your money here! The Hushpuppies, Coleslaw and white beans with ham came out before we ordered. I thought that was cool. We'll definitely add JC to our rotation. read more

Just so you know, I spent almost half my life in the "real" South (Alabama, Georgia, & Virginia) where catfish and hushpuppies are both a staple and an art form - kind of like BBQ in Kansas City or pasta in St. Louis. So when some friends suggested Jumpin' Catfish for dinner I jumped at the chance! While located in a typical suburban strip mall, there is very little "typical suburban" about Jumpin' Catfish. It is a real down home, family oriented, and seriously friendly place. Adding to its country feel are the dramatic stuffed animal trophies lining the walls. The tables and booths are comfortable and just the right size for friendly dinner conversation. But it is the menu that will hook you. Yes, it leads off with catfish. Deep fried, Cajun style, lemon pepper grilled, or topped with a Parmesan seafood cream sauce, I do recommend the "all you can eat" deep fried filets (they are a bit smallish, so at least order them one size up from what you think you want). Not into catfish? Then how about duck, frog legs, steak, quail, tilapia, Southern fried chicken, chicken fried steak (OMG), or true seafood from scallops to crab legs and lobster tails! Sides? As soon as you sit down hushpuppies, slaw, and beans appear on your table. They do have a full bar and soft drinks (including unsweetened and sweet ice tea for an authentic catfish experience). Every day they have a different "special" that runs from all you can eat crab legs, shrimp, to live lobster! The service is friendly, fast, efficient. While prices are very reasonable - one can enjoy a tasty and filling meal for around $18.00, and the daily specials of all you can eat crab legs and lobster are very competitively priced with other restaurants in the area. It is a bit of a drive for me right now, but when their Lee's Summit location reopens you can bet I will be there. read more

As other have mentioned, the starters were good. The beans and ham were delicious, but the coleslaw was too sweet. There aren't many gluten free options, as most things are fried. The chicken is okay if not a little dry. The service was nice- while the server forgot who ordered what and handed the orders out wrong, she did help my grandmother to break her lobster open. The decor was a little disturbing. There were numerous taxidermy displays, mounted deer heads and pictures of people posing with dead and bloodied animals. This along with all the wood tables, dim flickering lighting and fireplace made me feel like I was in a cabin in the woods where I was about to be murdered. The ambiance was a little off putting to say the least and made it a little hard to eat- I would recommend picking a seat that doesn't force you to make eye contact with an animal. read more

First went there with my family to say goodbye to my dad that's going to be moving across the country next month! Well I got the all you can eat crab! $50 a person. I don't like the claw meat. It's too much work and the meat is stringy! Well I was 4 plates in. 2 clusters each plate. The OWNER came and got upset cause I wasn't eating the claws his words "Your not gonna waste MY FOOD the good lord won't let me buy them without the claw so YOUR GONNA EAT THEM" and then got pissed when I told Him I don't like claws so he went to the back with my left over claws and other shells and brings me a bowl with claw meat! Said here you go hers the meat you didn't eat! I also told him that I eat at his restaurant 2 times a month and he said I DONT CARE! Your not gonna waste my food! But how is it his food when I'm paying? Then he said what kind of Business are you in. I informed him I'm disabled due to a heart transplant. HE LAUGHED ABOUT IT! How is that funny? Let me start out by saying. Take my review with the consideration that it was Mother's Day. We called ahead and made a reservation for a table. In the conversation of the reservation. Asked if they had all you can eat crab legs. The person on the phone said they did. Upon ordering, we were told that, they indeed did not have crab legs due to the holiday. We were disappointed. Thankfully we had an amazing server named Regina. If you come here, she is the one to ask for. I wish I could have the service at other restaurants that Regina provided today. I cannot say enough good things about the service. Now about the food, it took 40 minutes to get our food. With it being Mother's Day. That might have caused the delay in getting our food. Once I received my order, I was given catfish instead of the shrimp. Regina was quick to fix the issue. The fried chicken was good. Boiled shrimp was good. Overall a good experience. We will be back. One last thing. I could go there for just the Cole slaw and hush puppies. Oh my goodness they are a five star. read more

The service was exceptional that was my first impression! It made me hope so bad this place would get 5 stars. We came with family and had 5 people. The sides, coleslaw, white beans, and hush puppies were out quickly and were amazing! I have never had better beans and hush puppies anywhere. Drinks followed quickly and then our order was taken. We all ordered separate platters and then had one kids meal of Mac and cheese with hot dogs. We also ordered al a carte one extra cluster of crab legs and frog legs. To start everything came out nice and hot....but the extra crab cluster and kids meal was missing. When I told the waitress she seemed confused, checked her order slip, and said oh I didn't write down the kids meal my fault. I will bring the crab cluster and have them make the kids meal. Really disappointed as I repeated the kids meal twice because she didn't get it the first time, and it still got forgotten on the order. Thankfully my son ate some of the platter stuff I had. Really really disappointed in the additional crab cluster that was brought out. About halfway up it was freezing cold, like it had just been taken out of a freezer. The bottom half was warm, so it wasn't from it cooling down too fast. The cluster that came with our meal was nice and warm all over. This cluster was forgotten and an afterthought so it was taken out and thrown on a plate without regard to how cold it was or the fact it was being served to people. That and forgetting the kids meal after a couple repeats really dropped the rating. The popcorn and butterfly shrimp was spectacular. The catfish filets, breaded, were AMAZING! We even had one filet left over and it was good heated up later! This is what the place is known for and it shows. The lemon pepper catfish wasn't the best, definitely stick to the breaded filet! If I ever go back I will only get the sides and the breaded catching filets! That is worth going back for and maybe to give the whole staff another shot. We will see. I was pleasantly surprised with the cost, but even with the cost, I did not go away hungry and was very much satisfied with the service that my wife and I received. My wife generally doesn't care for the coleslaw and the white beans and she was pleasantly surprised with the taste and was very satisfied. I finally had business to tend to in Olathe and immediately thought about trying Jumpin' Catfish. I wish I wouldn't have. Its location is not very GPS friendly, but we did manage to find it tucked away in a strip mall a bit disguised from plain sight. As soon as you walk in the door it seems like you've found a time machine wormhole that dropped you off in a Twilight Zone episode from a 1970s fish camp. The decor is very gawdy, however there is a nice fish tank which looks to be superbly maintained. The ambience of the place is further disrupted with a TV located in the bar area blaring out the audio of the news channel instead of Muzak playing in the dining room. The light fixtures above all of the tables had two bulbs but each one was only burning one of them. Some of them had one bulb completely missing. Ok, so the place is weird. So what? It's really just a side observation. The real heart and soul of this one-star review lies solely on the food. I got the AYCE catfish, she got the AYCE fried chicken. My catfish looked good, but that's as good as it got. It was extremely dry, and so crisp on the edges that it was borderline jerky. I didn't even finish the first portion they brought out. Her fried chicken was very dark. That's always a signal that the fryer oil is dirty. Her chicken was also terribly dry and overcooked. She didn't finish her first helping either. We left hungry. The service was mediocre and it wasn't busy. We were there at 3:15PM on a Tuesday. The AYCE table tent is ambiguously worded. It says that catfish and fried chicken are AYCE every day (no price on the tent), then it separates into a listing of the daily AYCE specials which are priced. We expected catfish and chicken to be considerably less. Yes, we should have asked, but we left feeling price gouged. $41.xx for one serving of an AYCE order with quality that fell well below the Mendoza line. The fried chicken and catfish at Peachtree BUFFET on Eastwood Trfwy are WAY better and WAY cheaper. If I'm saying that a buffet was better than cooked-to-order food, then that ought to tell you how bad it was at Jumpin' Catfish. We were horribly disappointed all the way around and would not recommend anyone go out of their way to try this place. read more

This place grew on me. It was tough to find, as the sign wasn't lit up and there weren't too many cars out front. So we drove around the lot a bit before figuring out exactly where it was. And then it took longer that I like for a waitress to find us. But once she did, the rest of the experience was pretty good. Before you've even ordered, they put plates of hush puppies, cole slaw and beans in front of you. (They even refilled them, unsolicited, when we asked for a take-out box for our entrees.) The menu is about what you'd expect from a restaurant of this name. We found the catfish to be pretty decent, and the chicken fried steak was good, too. Not the best JC in the chain. Restaurant layout is large & open, but has a few too many tables crammed in, so feels crowded. Service was quite slow on the night we were there. Also, when they brought out the sides, the hush puppies were cold. When I asked the server for a new basket, she said, "yeah, we knew those were cold." Well, then, why did you bring them out? Had to keep asking her, too, but stopped after the third ask. I figured i was just going to do without. She did finally bring some fresh hush puppies, but by then, the meal was nearly over. They were, however, quite delicious--hot out of the fryer & beautifully light. Another server (not ours) had the bad habit of addressing a table while she was still halfway across the room, walking towards it. So you never knew if she was talking to you, or shouting across you to the people three tables away. Disconcerting. Manager did come to our table to apologize for the Great Hushpuppy Fiasco, but didn't offer any adjustments when he rang us up. Do NOT come here unless... 1) you want to wait over 30 minutes for cold food 2) you want to step in sopping wet carpet near the salad bar and then be told "oh"-- but no one do anything about it 3) you want the OWNER to stop by your table and give you a dismissive statement that "it's busy!" and have him stroll off before you can respond 4) you want to wait 20 min for a drink because your server is under 21, there's no bartender and he had to wait for "an adult" to pour your drink. Another place I used to love that has slowly gone downhill. We always order the fried catfish, corn nuggets, fried crawfish. When we feel adventurous we try other items but none hit the spot like the aforementioned dishes. Lately the fish has been really thin with more breading than fish. The tartar sauce is still one of my favorites. We dont order from here as much as we used to because it can get rather pricey. Now I wait for Groupons. read more
