Finally got to try Jumpin' Catfish recently - we went over with a group of 5 for a Friday night dinner. It was busy, and we had to wait awhile, but it wasn't long (5-10 minutes). Our waitress was obviously very busy, but was still very attentive and helpful. I didn't necessarily feel in a mood for fish, so I ordered a fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes. Positives: -Nice assortment of food on the menu -Awesome mashed potatoes Negatives: -Wider selection of fish would be nice -Could be tough to find, as it's tucked away in a strip mall off 151st St. Overall, the food was solid - but it just felt a little blah to me, nothing special. We eat at Jumpin Catfish quite often; we are never disappointed. We arrive hungry and leave full. I recommend everything from fried chicken,fried catfish, boiled shrimp and the Thursday night "all you can eat Crablegs! I really wanted to like this place more than I did. The service was great, the catfish, beans, slaw and crayfish were all decent as well.. The problem we had was the crab was dirty and the chicken was overcooked. Could have been an off night.. If you like tons of choices that are fried and a decent value, this might be your place.. Went during Lent for our fish Friday fix! It was of course packed because of the time of year. It was our first time there, I brought my husband and little 1.5year old. Great family place with fish tanks for kids to look at and so much on the walls. It also feels very dated because of the decor and seating. The complimentary sides were good. This was my second time eating here. I ordered catfish filet dinner. I will give the food three stars, tasty but the beans were mushy, slaw was swimming in sugary mayo, hush puppies were ok. But the reason for the one star is how filthy the restaurant is. The carpet has been there for years. Imagine the bacteria. All you need to do is stand at the register up front and look at it and the surrounding counter area. It is past filthy. Everyone has cleanliness standards, but how anyone can't look at the dirt all day and not wash everything down is beyond me. As far as COVID-19, they are definitely not following protocol. There was a drink menu on the table that was so sticky and dirty you could tell it hadn't been washed in a long time, maybe never. Face masks were worn by some employees, others not. My server was very nice and gave great service. I noticed these thing the first time I was there but hoped they had cleaned up their act. Not so. This is a favorite spot for our family to enjoy a relaxing meal. They start you out with some delicious beans, slaw and hushpuppies. My wife goes for the hushpuppies alone (ask for some tartar sauce for dipping). Everything is delicious here and there is a fantastic variety of food. Every year we have Jumping Catfish cater for one of our corporate luncheons. He cooks everything onsite so the food is always fresh and hot! As long as people are still eating, he is still cooking, he keeps everything coming. Everything was wonderfully delicious and now I need a nap! read more

My boyfriend and I make our way to Jumpin' Catfish for date night at least a few times a month. The waitresses are even starting to recognize us. This is probably my favorite seafood joint in the Olathe/ Overland Park area. The only reason I am not giving this place five stars is because I don't like their fried oysters. Fried oysters are my favorite, and Jumpin Catfish has fried oysters that taste rotten or something. It's quite disturbing... But other than that, the food has been delicious. Side note: If you are looking for something super romantic and sweet, this is not the place. It is a good place to go if you don't care about the decor or about the waitress' attitude. They are quick servers, but they throw the menus and food on the table like they don't give a hoot. First time trying this place and came away with mixed feelings. The service was pretty good. Hush puppies, coleslaw, and ham/beans came out automatically (none of which are my thing, but to each their own I suppose). Chicken fried chicken was outstanding, possibly even as good as Stroud's. The mashed taters were sad though. Namesake catfish? Also very good (and somebody left a review on Google claiming it was Swai...that person is wholly incorrect, I can assure you as someone that's eaten catfish since before I could walk, it is indeed farm raised catfish). Crab legs were most definitely over done and dried out. Not sure if that's because it was all you can eat crab leg night and it was going slowly or they just cooked it first and then it dried out waiting to make it to the table...regardless, I'd be leery of dropping the requisite $33 for all you can eat if that's the product you're getting. Will I be back? Probably, since it's right down the street from where I live. After hearing news of a Groupon though, I'll definitely be on the look out for one of those. read more

The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food was good and there was a lot of it. My favorite parts of the meal were the mashed potatoes and the hush puppies. Yikes. I really, really hoped this was going to be amazing. Tried out the all you can eat crab legs night. WHOA $75 for 2 people first of all. Didn't even order seconds because the legs were so undercooked and I guess they don't know what wonderful things a little Old Bay will do. Unfortunately that $75 didn't stay down very long, and not to my surprise it didn't taste any better coming back up for either of us. Coleslaw was really good though..... Great theory. I walked right into a nursing home....okay for those of you that want to take your grandparents out this is your restaurant. It was great b/c we had bunch of kids and they can look at the stuffed zoo they have in glass cases! Yes....seriously. The food was decent but nothing healthy, salad bar is brown iceberg and ranch....basically home cookin'. The decor is like that 70's show. We were the youngest people in the joint. However, the young server was AMAZING. He was so friendly and our kids made a mess and w/o skipping a beat he said "that's why you go out to eat" and he was sincere! Love the Catfish Nuggets lunch. I used to come here for the all you can eat crablegs, but prices have increased so much that it's hard to justify bringing the whole family here for that. Regardless of price, I prefer Jumpin Catfish to the buffets when it comes to the crab. It's always hot and not fighting other people over it. The complimentary sides are good. This is my second time using carry out and both times have left me disappointed. I was so unimpressed with the catfish. My catfish was raw and tasted extremely fishy. I'm not sure if the fish was old or had not been cooked through and through. My potato wedges were dark brown leading to burnt. Probably the worst experience I've had at a restaurant ever. As we sat down, we were greeted with an overwhelmed server that already has a party table of 30+ people. Then the server brought us our hush puppies, coleslaw and beans with his fingers submerged in our coleslaw and beans as he placed It on the table. And after 20 minutes of waiting, the server was finally free to take our orders. We ordered the Sunday all-you-can-eat special. The fish was under seasoned; the chicken was dry; the quails was mediocre; the shrimp was over cooked; and the crawfish tail was just terrible. Also to mention that all of our silverware were covered with batter residue. If our silverware were that dirty, we can't imagine how the kitchen is. One word is all you need to know... Bad (unless you like oil soaked catfish and hushpuppies). The catfish was rubbery on the edges... I could literally bend the fish (isn't fish supposed to be flaky???). Hushpuppies had a 1/4" ring of oil on the inside (why would this restaurant go through the trouble of concocting a batter recipe but then ruin it by allowing oil to soak in?). I consider myself a foodie of a wide range and know good, quality food when I taste it. This is far from it. Although they over much more on their extensive menu, this remains one of my favorite places for a good old catfish dinner. The casual family style dining atmosphere lends itself to an evening with friend and family where cell phones and business discussions are put aside and conversations about daily life are the main event. The food is promptly served and refills are plenty. The only complaint I have is I wish the sides were a little healthier. Perhaps a choice of sides could be an option. Beans, potatoes, and delicious mayo based coleslaw are all very good, but there is nothing green unless one wants to purchase an additional salad bar. Perhaps a green beans could be a side choice.
