This place has dim sum daily, which sometimes can be a bit sketchy on quality of the food. We did not try any Szechuan dishes, only dim sum. We rolled in on a Sunday afternoon around 1ish, half the place was full and no dim sum carts rolling around. Dim sum is made to order from the menu. They had a dinner menu and a weekend paper menu. The dim sum prices ranged from $4.5 to $5.5 and other specialty items were $7+. Surprisingly the hot and sour soup was delicious, it needed a touch more sourness but overall pretty darn good in the flavor and spice. Shrimp dumplings, shu mai, and soup dumplings were very yummy and served hot. (I. Cannot stand warm dim sum) The soup dumpling had a strong ginger flavor, may be overpowering for some people. Oh my, please do not order chicken feet, I felt they missed a step or two in the process of cooking it, texture of the skin was not soft and very disappointing after the first bite. Shrimp balls were good, I felt as though the filling needed some black pepper to balance out the flavor. Fried bread roll was very good and crispy, not many places in MN have it on the menu or carts and you have to ask the server for it. Thankfully this place offers it on the menu. The char siu bao was not bad, the dough was soft and perfect; however, the filling was so close in being perfect. The meat was good but the sauce is straight up hoisin sauce. The sauces that came with the fry bread roll and soup dumplings were disgusting. Don't do it. Service was fine, except the food runner was confused when I asked for soy sauce and chili oil, he gave me sweet and sour sauce. Eventually I asked the right person and received it right away. I find it odd it's not on the table like other dim sum restaurants. The chili oil is just straight up oil. I had heard good things about this place. We went on a saturday at 11am, when they first opened. The building is kind of funky, but didn't have that authentic dim sum feel to it. The waiter was really nice, and was super easy to talk to. Some of our party had a gluten intolerance, and he was able to talk to the kitchen to accommodate that, which was great. There wasn't soy sauce or a bowl of chili/garlic sitting on the table like most dim sum places, which was kind of disappointing. Ok, let's get to the good stuff now: 1) GF Chicken Wings - These wings were so delicious. The crunch was nice, the scallions were a great touch. It was seasoned perfectly. I would get these again for sure. 2) Bun Bao (Veggie) - The bun itself was good, very fluffy and moist. The filling was mushrooms and carrots. It just seemed like someone forgot to insert the other half of the filling. It was definitely missing a few elements. I would have liked to see cabbage or chinese broccoli. Something to complete the dish, and have it tied together. 3) Shrimp dumplings - Pretty standard shrimp dumplings, nothing to really report about. 4) Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll - This is usually one of my favorites, it was served with the sauce on the side for the GF people, which was fine. It also had 2 chinese broccolis on the side, which were really good. The shrimp roll itself - I plunged the noodles in the sauce bowl so it had plenty of sauce, these too were missing an element. They weren't bad, but they weren't good. I think the sauce just needed more flavor. 5) Meatballs - These were kind of fun, they had a hint of orange to it. They were pretty decent, and came with 3 in a dish. I had half of a meatball, and that's all I really needed from that dish. Just enough to taste, but it didn't leave me feeling like I needed to eat the other half. 6) Curry Octopus - I was super excited about this dish. It was a little limey, which was a surprise. All in all, it wasn't a bad dish. I'm glad I tried it. I think had the dish been called something other than curry, I wouldn't have much to complain about, but I was really looking for that curry flavor and it just wasn't there. But the dish itself, was good - just don't go into it expecting a huge curry flavor. 7) Fried Taro Balls - I would not get these again. They were overly greasy, and they were super bland. I tried to dip it in a sauce, and they were still bland. Not great at all. 8) Turnip Cakes - Hmmm, these were super mushy. Almost like they weren't done completely. It was so hard for me to tell what the flavor was like because the consistency of the cakes were like custard once you tried to pick up a piece. I felt like this meal just did not hit the spot, and it was on the pricey end. The quality did not match the price. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was so-so. Now I will have to see what some of their other competitors have to offer before I circle back around again. I would, however, get those wings again. They were pretty awesome. read more

The fried rice is amazing! I tried the egg rolls and the dan dan noodles as well. The egg rolls I don't recommend, but the noodles had just the right amount of spice, they're a must. I'm actually shooting for a 3.5, but that's not an option, so we're going with the lesser of the two stars. First things first, Jun shares a front door with another business. So, once you walk in, turn to the left and you'll be at the hostess stand. In looking around upon entry, the decor is trendy...dark woods, clean lines, modern.There's an open kitchen, so to speak. There are two sides to the dinner room (the side by the window and the side by the kitchen. And, straight past the hostess stand is the bar. There are lots of options. There are booths and tables. But let's get real, I'm not here for any of that. I'm here for the food. Lately, I've been craving me some good szechuan. And in such times, my first go-to dishes are the dan dan noodles and mapo tofu. Our server was pretty nice. She checked on us more at the beginning of our meal than at the end when we were ready to pay the check. (It started to get busier near the end so maybe that was it?) The drinks: Jun Sour (baijiu, lychee liqueur, grapefruit, cinnamon, egg white) - terrible, for a sour...it was more sweet than sour...it wasn't exactly overly sweet, but it wasn't what I expected or all that good (I had to send it back and get a new cocktail) High Noon - fresh ginger rim, this was delicious Hot Tea - we got Jasmine, it was delicious and welcomed on a rainy, cold day The food: Sichuan Dumplings (sichuan pork dumplings with chili sauce - 1 spice) - might have been one of the best things we had all night. They were delicious and well executed. They could've used a bit more sauce and a touch more spice, but I would totally recommend these. Dan Dan Noodles (udon noodles with spicy sesame sauce, topped with green veggies and minced pork - 1 spice) - they were fine...definitely needed more spice and more sauce. Unless they got better, they're meh. I would probably get them again...maybe Ma Po Tofu (diced tofu boiled in Sichuan spicy sauce - 1 spice) - It's listed under vegetarian, but traditional this dish should have minced pork in it. I can't actually tell if this had any or not, I'm guessing no and for a 1 spice, it tasted more like 2, which I actually liked and you'll probably need to order more rice to go with it because for this dish they definitely don't give you enough. I'd give it another shot, the flavors were there. Couples Beef (beef shank and tendon with Sichuan peppercorn and spices - 2 spice) - this dish is served cold and rightly says so. It's thinly sliced meet, dried. It's a little bit like beef jerky. It's not all that spicy. It's okay. Some people thoroughly enjoy it. La Zi Chicken (fried chicken stir-fried with sliced ginger, garlic and roasted chili peppers - 2 spice) - I wanted this to be sooooo good, but for 2 spice levels, it was basically 1. And at the beginning, it really did just taste like popcorn chicken (not real flavor - on the bland side). I had some left over that I had with my leftover rice (I ordered rice sides) and it was so much better, more like what it should've tasted like. It's a fine enough dish and I'd probably order it again, but it didn't quite hit the spot. I'd probably try other stuff first. Xiao Long Bao (juicy steamed buns aka soup dumplings) - 1. There's 3 in an order, 2. There is basically no broth 3. reminded me of Trader Joe's frozen soup dumplings for way more money 4. I definitely would not recommend this, the execution was just not there Note: To use the bathroom, there's a key (2 for womens, 1 for men) next to the door that leads to the bathrooms. We came here looking for the MAH LAH (that hot tingling sensation characteristic of Sichuan food). As mentioned in other reviews, the waitress started out by telling us the things they were out of...so we lost out on a few things we wanted to try. There are also things like cream cheese wontons and Jjampong that I raised an eyebrow at on the menu - what's a Korean soup doing on the menu? Of the dishes we got, I would recommend: - Sichuan dumplings- I could eat a million of them! - Eggplant - So tasty, must try if you like eggplant - Cumin Lamb - Sichuan green beans - La Zhi Chicken - Whole sea bass - good for a big group to share Nothing was really that spicy and while we did not get the MAH LAH we were looking for, it was tasty nonetheless. Decided to give this place a try after hearing about it, excited for dim sum in the Twin Cities...ON WEEKDAYS! Truly disappointing, food was ok but service brought it down to a 2. My first experience with dim sum was at China Town in Chicago and doesn't even come close! 1 of 3 tables in our section for a late lunch and it took almost 20 minutes for the waitress to come by! Although our waitress was nice, service was dreadfully slow. No dim sum cart and of the 5 different things we ordered, there were never 2 items at our table at the same time. The crispy fried pork intestines were incredible. Walked over from our hotel for a drink and some munchies and it was a great choice. The Dan Dan noodles were super simple and clean, not to mention perfectly cooked to retain its chew. The chicken wings were excellently fried with plenty of chili, garlic, and ginger to kick it up a notch and to cut through the typical "greasiness" of wings. The Szechuan dumplings were good but the sauce/chili oil it was served in definitely stole the show- tons of heat and flavor. Finally, the crispy fried Szechuan pork intestine. Oh my goodness the pork intestine. It was perfectly spicy with the hint of sweetness you associate with great offal. The meat had an excellent crisp to it and immediately melted in the mouth leaving behind the taste of unctuous pork fat, the faint sweetness of green bell peppers trailing close behind. We sat at the bar and Kevin took great care of us, even having the kitchen bring out additional ground peppercorn for us when I mentioned "that'd be nice"(I was craving that novacaine​-like numbness). Went here this past weekend, and had quite a tasty time. I was here for a friend's birthday dinner, and there were roughly 10 of us. This was great because it meant I got to try many things. I liked almost everything I tried, but my favorite were the Chong Bao Beef and the Beef Hot Pot. The Chong Bao Beef was really flavorful, with tender pieces of beef, generously portioned and sprinkled liberally with green onion. It also came with steamed buns, which was a nice surprise that wasn't listed on the menu. Overall, the presentation and style reminded me of peking duck. I also really liked the beef hot pot - simple name for another incredibly flavorful dish, and those potatoes though! They were SO good, cooked in oil and the beef fat. Yum. I also really liked the flavors of both the La Zi Shrimp and Chicken - both came with a lot of onions and had a really nice spice level. The homemade dumplings and noodles were a nice touch too, the beef udon was surprisingly very spicy, but delicious nevertheless. The fish was what I was most excited about, and it was good, but they didn't stand out, and I wouldn't order them again. The pork belly was super interesting - it's presented as sort of a mound, made up of vertical layers of pork belly, all sitting atop of a sweet potato mash. Not my favorite way to eat pork belly - but the flavors were very complementary. I have mixed feelings about the service. We were trying to eat family style and share everything, and almost every entrée came with a bowl of rice. But the entrees came really spaced out, I don't think our last two dishes arrived until almost 45 minutes after the first dish. So we asked for our rice to come out first, so we could all have rice with the dishes, as opposed to sharing the little bowls of rice as they arrived. The slow pace of receiving our dishes was forgivable to me, since it was an open kitchen, we could literally see the orders coming in, with the associated quick frenzy of stressed activity. It was opening night and our party was large and sometimes large parties don't get all their dishes at the same time. But, they charged us $4 for extra rice! We split the check, so this is the surcharge for 2 people. Does this happen at other Chinese restaurants? I haven't been charged for rice before. So I was unhappy about this, and would've tried to argue this, but the birthday girl seemed so happy, and I didn't want to spoil the mood. But $4 for getting our rice early? SMH. read more

Got the sichuan dumplings and the shrimp dumplings (or dimsum). The sichuan dumplings were way too salty.. I had to chug down two glasses of water(there goes one star)! But they were flavorful (I mean with all that sodium...). The shrimp dumplings were great. I really dislike seafood that have a strong taste of the sea. I think fishy is the word im looking for. But no they werent fishy at all. The outer part of the dimsum seemed to not stick with the stuffing. They would come right off, so i kindof had to put them in my mouth piece by piece lol. The service wasnt that great. The waiter gave me water and had the pitcher at my table throughout my whole time, wasnt a big deal, its just.. you know? One of the hottest and best new restaurants in Minneapolis. The vibes and ambience are typical to the north loop area but this establishment sets itself apart from the rest. Craft cocktails at a Sichuan restaurant are rare and the ones they make here at Jun are exceptional. Imagine taking your favorite cocktail bar (marvel, parlour, prohibition) and combining it with a brand new home made menu. 5 star restaurant and 5 star service. I am not Chinese, but I was recently in Chengdu in Sichuan where this restaurant's menu has its roots and I have been eating a mix of everything from Panda Express to very authentic Chinese my entire life. This place is really good on a few levels. First, they have produced authentic flavors and classic dishes with fresh ingredients and well prepared, fresh cuts of meat. Where most Chinese restaurants that are authentic have fatty, skin on pieces of chicken and rubbery beef that is low quality, I felt that almost everything I ate was absolutely delicious. The ambiance and drinks at this place are also great, which is very rare for a good, authentic Chinese restaurant. On top of that presentation and service are great. Even more rare for where you can get authentic flavors. The balance this place strikes and their execution is excellent. BUT BUT if you're a casual lover of food and not deeply passionate about eclectic, authentic Chinese food - I must encourage you to be careful with what you order so you can have the best experience. For a group of 4, absolutely have the following in this order of excellence: eggplant, gung pao chicken, beef chow fun noodles, and fried rice. I would not suggest the Dan Dan Noodles as much (although this an mapo tofu, which I didn't try here) are staple Sichuanese street foods. The dumplings are also not the kind you think of as your favorite dumplings - they are authentic in style and flavor, not crispy fried little Gyoza like or served on bamboo like a dumpling house. I would suggest not getting pork bun and I would encourage this restaurant to cut or reimagine this item completely. It should have much more pork and more flavor / sauce and less bread-y. Overall, I highly recommend if you live in MSP and want to try ethnic food. Best Chinese I've been to since moving here from SF. read more

Let's start by saying that Jun is already making better use of this North Loop location than Rojo or Shag Sushi. We went on a Saturday night after the wait for food at the Freehouse was 90 minutes (OMG WHY) and were surprisingly impressed. I need to add in the disclaimer that we ordered entirely pescetarian/vegetarian so I can't speak to the more traditional chicken, beef or pork dishes. That being said Jun's veggie options are on-point. The vegetable dumplings had the most flavor I've ever encountered in a vegetable dumpling. Rather than being the pork dumplings sad alternative the veggie dumpling stands on its own with a bold lemongrass/ginger/garlic flavor profile. The Tang Chu Yu Pian (fish fillets w/ homemade sweet-and-sour sauce) should definitely be part of your order. The fish was light and crispy, making it the perfect vehicle for the sweet and sour sauce. Speaking of sauce, this sweet and sour sauce beats takeout any day. The Ma Po Tofu is prepared very traditionally and is boiled. Personally, not my favorite texture, but the Sichuan spicy sauce had a nice kick. The Yu Xiang Eggplants were so so so flavorful with it's garlic sauce - the texture is a little squishy and best served with rice. read more

This place is a solid 4 stars but giving it 5 to help it out here because unlike Rojo, I actually like it. +1 for the wonton soup, dumplings and teng jiao fillets. Wonton soup had these tasty pork and shrimp wontons--definitely the real deal. Dumplings were the perfect blend of spicy and garlic and fish was mildly crispy with good moisture. +1 for my delish ginger rye drink. Strong, just how I like 'em. According to my bartender--the candied ginger chew was homemade. Can I buy a box?! +1 for the modern decor. Ambience is better than I expected. +1 because I'm tired of being ignored at your average Chinese restaurant and Jun knows how to treat their guests. The space and service are good. I had the Bao Bao (pork belly steam buns) which were good. But the sweet and sour pork spare ribs are not good. We tried Jun for dim sum at noon on a Saturday. We made a reservation, although the place was empty--the whole time we were there we were the only patrons except for one other person. The dim sum offerings we tried were okay. Not anything special, and we've had much better dim sum elsewhere (not in MN, unfortunately). But, the waiter could not have been more bored! Maybe he was trying to watch the World Cup...who knows, but he was just barely willing to serve us. We know how to order and eat dim sum, so can't imagine we offended him somehow. Will not go back, that is for sure! If you go, the one item that was really tasty was the fried pork dumpling with chives. Kind of like pot stickers in texture, and lots of garlic chives inside. I was impressed by the overall ambience at the soft opening, but the food was average and quite pricey - as you can expect in the north loop. The dumpling appetizer was a bit undercooked and the hot pot grease was difficult to get over. The one thing I did enjoy was sitting at the kitchen bar and watching the grandma's cutting the chili peppers. After seeing and hearing about this place, we decided to go try it. The restaurant itself is very clean and great looking. We ordered the Ma po tofu, la zi chicken, sesame chicken, and cumin lamb. The la zi chicken was unbelievably salty and dry. I had to stop eating it after a couple bites. The cumin lamb was too salty and the cumin was too overpowering. Stopped in while my daughter was getting her done at Haus Salon next door. It wasn't crowded, but then again, it was 3p. There were a lot of dim sum options that sounded yummy, but I opted for the spicy Jjamppong noodle soup with pork and seafood. The noodles are made fresh, so the consistency is perfect. The broth is so flavorful and has a nice kick. The calamari was a tad over cooked, but the shrimp was perfectly prepared. We arrived around 8:00 pm without a reservation on a Saturday and were greeted by a friendly host. He told us the wait would be about 20 minutes and that we could grab a drink and wait in their lounge area which we were more than happy to do. The lounge had small tables and we asked if we could order food there which they allowed. We ordered the Szechuan Dumplings, Jun's 5-Spice Wings, Jun's Fried Rice, and Shanghai Wonton Soup. All were good, but the Szechuan dumplings were by far our favorite. The portion of 5 dumplings is a little small for $12, but they are a decent size. They come served in a delicious chili sauce that is like a broth and not very spicy. The Shanghai Wonton soup was also fantastic. The pork wontons are soft and pillowy with a slight ginger taste that works well with the chicken broth, cilantro, & green onions. The 5-Spice wings were OK and a good portion to split. About 7-8 wings came out piping hot and were served with a sesame aioli that reminded me of a spicy mayo. Jun's Fried rice was on-par with what I would expect from a Chinese takeout restaurant. For $14 we were expecting something a little more exciting, but if you're looking for good fried rice this is a solid bet. Overall great service and food in an awesome part of Minneapolis. ** we went to the soft opening so of course there were issues. Cheese wantons were still cold in center. When the re order came we received 2 less because we had each bitten into a cold one. Menu said they were $3 but they were actually $7 for the cheese wantons. The recooked ones were all exploded, 2 having no filling whatsoever inside. Manager did come back with a completely new order, apologized and explained they are still working through the kinks. He explained the kitchen didnt understand to start a whole new order and no re-fry the bad ones (which is why we got 4 in the first reorder...they reheated the ones we sent back). So im left asking myself if they actually stuck food we touched back in their fryer. Who else is eating food from a fryer that reheated food I touched? The La Zi Chicken was a flavor I had never experienced before- very good.  No sauce, but the batter had the flavor in it. Cons: still working through practical issues. The menu descriptions did not match the food (La Zi said fried chicken stir fried...so we expected a stir fry with some type of sauce). They were out of many menu items. Pros: the manager addressed our issues and thanked us for bringing them up, he even comped the meal after the bad start. The server was friendly. The taste of the chicken was unique and delicious. Overall, I will never go back simply because of the fryer issue. I have no confidence in their kitchen to be clean enough for my OCD to handle it. It ate here a couple weekends ago with some buddies. I would have expected there to be more seafood or vegetarian options. I had a tofu dish that was OK, and the coconut shrimp, which was very good. There were a couple appetizers I also tried that were the typical rolls and cheese puff things you get at every other Chinese restaurant. Overall, the food was fine, nothing memorable. This place has great Cantonese food! This is the spot if you are hankering for some Asian food. My wife is from Hong Kong and we love this type of Asian cuisine. I loved the egg yolk boas and white carrot cake. I would return to have the double cooked pork and sweet and sour soup again. read more

Jun is down the street from our apartment in North Loop and I've been wanting to try this spot out since moving to the neighborhood a couple months ago. I was super excited for the all day dim sum especially! I'm a Hong Kong native and most recently moved here from Chicago, so authentic Chinese food is the way to my heart. My boyfriend and I ordered wonton soup, pork and preserved egg congee, pork spare ribs, mushroom and bok choy medley, beef chow fun, and xiao long bao (soup dumplings). Oh and a couple cocktails. Favorite was definitely the beef chow fun (I'm used to calling it ho fun but details details) - tender, tasty beef and delicious flat noodles. The xiao long bao was a disappointment as there was no soup really. We didn't even receive spoons, which are required for this dish if done right. I wonder if we just received a bad batch bc from the other Yelpers' photos, it looks like it comes in orders of 3 and we received 6. Also looked different than the photos as ours didn't have the flat extended bottoms. I'm willing to give it another try though as xiao long bao is one of my favorite things on earth! Atmosphere was trendy and dark, and menu had more American-ized options for those less adventurous for authentic Chinese cuisine. My boyfriend (Caucasian) didn't have a choice really :) I would have honestly given this experience 3.5 stars if half stars were a thing, but rounded up bc I think it has a lot of potential. This restaurant just was not that good. It wasn't bad, the food itself was decent, but overall it was just kind of a hot mess. I do know they had a lot of to go orders that were backing things up, but it was a bit ridiculous. There were 4 of us at the table and all of our food came out at very different times. One of the plates that was supposed to come with rice didn't, and it wasn't until we asked another waiter that we got some. We ordered egg rolls and even after asking about them again, we never got them. From the beginning of the meal until 5 minutes after the last person finished their food. They also just were out of a lot of things. At 6 on a Saturday night. Plus the portion sizes were super small. The wonton soup was disappointing. The broth was overly salty though the pork wontons were tasty. Not enough for a complete meal at all. Perhaps with different items and at a less busy time it would be decent, but not worth giving a second chance in my opinion. read more

Came here looking for Chinese food on Chinese New Year. A bit of background: we have a child that has a gluten and fructose sensitivity and Chinese restaurants (of all Asian cuisines) tends to care the least about this dietary restriction. We called and were assured that they can use tamari, but that there might be x-contamination with fryers/woks but that there were plenty of options. So upon arriving, we had to re-confirm (server seemed new but went through process of checking in with kitchen) and then we were off to the races! If you can't read any further: the food was amazing! It's been so long since we've been able to have Chinese food and the food did not disappoint. It's clear they use high quality ingredients and the flavor was great. Not too greasy! We had four appetizers: soup dumplings, Schezwan dumplings, fried tofu and the shishito peppers (daughter couldn't have dumplings, but i'm talking about the food now folks...) . Then we had the crispy duck, chicken chow fun, beef chow fun, pork belly fried rice, kung pao shrimp, green beans and some beef/lamb dish that doesn't seem to be on the menu! All very good and for each one, they confirmed it was gluten free and the owner even came out to confirm. So great food and accommodating to those with dietary needs!!! Is it the best Chinese food on the planet? No...but it's top tier for Minnesota and the fact that they care enough about their customers speaks volumes. I hope this place does well in a highly competitive area - we need more Chinese restaurants like this in town! read more

A friend and I met at Jun last night for dinner and it was our first time here. The environment is nice and clean, as it was when this was Rojo and also when it was a sushi restaurant. Our server was very prompt and friendly. The food. while everything was nicely plated, there was a large over use of salt ( yes I realize that this is Chinese food...) and also, nothing with the exception of the soup ( which I sent back, hot and sour soup, no flavor, actually needed some salt ironically ) was served warm enough. The Lettuce wraps were quite good, however the hoisin sauce on the side could have been replaced with something a little less Salty and sweet with a nice fish sauce or something lighter. Over-all for two entrees, three glasses of wine total, and 1 appetizer, it was 85ish dollars including tip. The food didn't seem to be elevated as much as I would have hoped. That being said, all around good environment. read more
