Affordable massages are a staple in Asia and have gradually made their way to LA, SF, Vegas and NYC. In contrast to traditional massage locations, the ambiance is more casual, the decor basic, and the prices much much lower. Though the focus is on foot massages, they also do whole massages and the prices are similarly solid. I found the location clean and quiet, the masseuses strong and focused, and the value great. While English may not be a strong point for some of the masseuses (which is why the communication on what they are doing may not be that strong), I had no complaints. We'll be back. They have an online scheduling system and a frequent visitors program too. Happy Feet may be a bigger name but this place seems bigger, has private rooms, and more massage choices. Win. I checked Foot Envy this evening because I am on a business trip in Palo Alto and feel very tired after days of heavy work. A little bit background about myself. I am a Chinese based in Houston, TX. I moved to the US about 6 years ago from China. When I was in China, I constantly went to foot massage and always enjoyed it. In China there are a big few chain stores in large cities that offer professional training to their masseurs, and all of the masseurs perform consistently well. Recently, after a successful experience in Houston, whose technique can be compared with a mid-tier foot masseur in China, I decided to try Foot Envy as it is so close to my hotel. I will not judge its environment, the decor or the atmosphere, because it is the massage that really attracts me. I was assigned to a friendly Chinese guy, probably in his late 30s. Honestly, I don't think he has received much professional training about foot reflexology. The massage on my feet did not intentionally aimed to any reflexology area. He just scrubbed the feet over, over and over. Maybe this is his way to cover "all reflexology areas" but this is definitely what a foot massage should be like. Parts of the massage also include head, shoulder, neck, leg and back. Again, he mainly pushed my body with his strength, and probably too much strength. Sometimes he did try to stimulate some acupuncture points but the strength was overwhelming. I tried to control myself not screaming but I felt like I would be dismantled. I felt sorry for the masseur because he really tried to do his job well. I can felt that he breathed heavily after massaging my back, and he paid attention to all parts of his work, and offered a full, one-hour continuous massage. But he just did not know how to do it correctly and comfortably. Correct massage can be done without too much effort. In China many girls are very good masseurs with great techniques. The key is to stimulate the acupuncture points and reflexology area with reasonable strength. You feel slight soar but generally very comfortable. Finally I tipped $10 because I felt the guy really wanted to do a good job, and also because he is also a Chinese trying to earn a good life with his hard work. I got a hot stone full body massage. I must have been delirious because I ended up paying the $60 for the service plus $10 in additional tip, without having had the massage. Overall, the massage was fine but I didn't think my therapist actually knew how to massage specific muscles, it was very generic and lacked focus. I also felt very uncomfortable with how she treated the towels. Most massage therapist keep you covered unless their working a specific area which would warrant them removing parts of the towel - in this massage, I felt unnecessarily exposed. She was working my shoulder but the towel was off my butt...so that doesn't make sense. It was also awkward, it felt more like a light rub down than an actual massage. I've had several massaged where my butt was massaged - it's different when someone is massaging the muscle to get your knots, it's a different story when someone is lightly rubbing from your neck to your butt and back up - it's just awkward and not one I particularly enjoyed. I think I wold come back but not for full body, probably just hands and feet. read more

My big issue with these massage places is that I never remember to ask for the same person so the massages vary every time I go. This time I had Tony and he gave the best foot massage I've ever had! The rest of the massage was not bad but not spectacular. Things that are constant at foot massage places: Chairs - they have these big black leather chairs, a little too firm, I still like the orange chairs at Dynasty best. General environment - I like the spaciousness but the room was a bit chilly for my taste, good thing Tony had freaking warm hands. The place is more open and less sketchy than other places I've been. June, the owner, is a complete doll and has transformed her business (formerly known as Foot Envy) into a stylist sanctuary. The remodel of this place is so ZEN. The new decor, chairs and covers, ultra plush blankets and overall VIBE = complete comfort. You'll be saying TGIF (thank God it's Friday) ANY day of the week at this place. My main guy Kevin has moved on but I have found another massage therapist with FIRM pressure who works MAGIC. Ask for Micheal if you want a firm, sore the next day in every possible good way, foot or body massage. He will get into spots you didn't know exist with his skills. He is well trained and ON POINT with pressure points. He also listens and respects your needs. My Mom's favorite guy is still Sam but when Sam is not available she enjoys John. She likes medium pressure and they both have put her to sleep during their massages. Easy to get appointments here and prices are very reasonable. Plus they offer packages to save money. Credit cards and cash accepted. My new go to place for cheap Asian massages! At $25 for a "foot" massage, it's a little cheaper than pretty much any other place in the Mountain View area. I've been here twice thus far, and have been perfectly satisfied with what I've gotten considering what I pay for it. If you want a fairly solid massage for a very reasonable price, this is definitely the place to go. I would recommend calling ahead for an appointment especially on weekends, as they do get busy and I have seen walk ins get told to expect an hour wait time. As for the tipping issue, I have always tipped at least $5, and up to $10 if I'm extremely satisfied (even in Southern California, where the massages run $15-20 an hour). And for all the Asian massage places I've been to (and I've been to plenty), this is the expected norm. Yes, I know that comes out to a 20-40% tip, but I have never thought of it as a percentage issue. You're receiving an hour of service that requires a not insignificant amount of physical labor, and at a price point which is incredibly reasonable. These masseuses aren't exactly getting paid top dollar, so be nice to your hard working masseuse and give them their $5+ tip. read more

His crude, random mashing hit many places in terrible ways, leaving reddish bruising on my neck and pain/damage in other areas. I told the front desk and they admitted that he was new, coming in from another place. They really should've done a better job with selection and training before setting this guy loose on customers. They do work you really hard, but it is my understanding that this is the type of massage they do here. It's cheap. The majority of the staff only speaks Chinese and not English. Unfortunately I do not speak Chinese. I feel really sorry for the people that work there, as they seem very recent, poor immigrants and I am reminded of the victims of human trafficking tricked into / forced to work in massage parlors, but then I remember this is *not* one of "those" massage parlors and I think they make pretty decent money for non-back-breaking work, especially compared to their other options, especially if you tip them well. It seems clean and non-sketchy, but the massages are hit-or-miss, and mostly miss. If you are lucky enough to find one you like, I think it is best to request him/her by name. They have put very little effort into the decor, but then, that's why it's cheap. Very basic, but they put you in one of the many rows of very comfortable fluffy leather recliners in the main area for foot or chair massages. For Swedish or other full body massage, they have private rooms and it is more expensive. Located in a very small strip mall next to a fencing school and beauty salon, with a few parking spaces in the front and the rest in the back. But if you are a female going alone late at night (they are open late), it can be scary back there so I suggest only parking in the front, which is highly visible and right on fairly busy El Camino Real. read more

This place made me so nostalgic for Shanghai. The massage totally reminded me of the foot spas and salons on Nandan Road. Weekly massages were the best!! The style here, as stated, is Chinese (acupressure) and not Swedish, so if you're looking for broad, sweeping motions, go elsewhere. Three suggestions: 1. For the "body" portion of the foot massage, a massage table (vs. the lazy-boy chair) would have allowed for a deeper massage 2. The A/C was cranked up kinda high, making me feel a bit chilled during the session. 3. The lotion was too potent-- baby powder scent. INTRO: I have frequented at least 14 foot massage places in the SF Bay, Los Angeles, and Orange County areas, so have a very good sense of the market. SERVICE: the massage is fairly complete, starting with head and scalp, moving on to arms and shoulders, going to the feet/legs, and ending with back and neck. My masseuse struck a good balance between pressure and relaxation techniques. You are served a little water after the massage, and the front desk person is fairly nice and professional. LOCATION & AMBIANCE: the place is right on El Camino Real in a nice area of the Peninsula, Los Altos. There is a fairly accessible free parking lot. Inside, this is probably the cleanest foot massage place I have been to with comfortable leather seats that are well-spaced. The bathroom is also hygenic and spacious. VALUE: in the Chinese and Vietnamese areas of LA and OC, foot massages are typically $15, while other areas like West LA, Santa Monica, and Los Altos get up to $25. This probably relates to what they have to pay for rent, but is a factor in deciding when and where to get a foot massage. For what you get, including convenience if you're in this area, the value is decent. Also, you get a $5 discount for signing up with their online program and every 11th full-priced massage is free. UPDATE: I've reduced my initial rating to 2-stars due to the inconsistency of quality that I have experienced here. Some of the masseuses are good and others just do a hack job on you. This place is fantastic for the price. I am seven months pregnant and sporting some pretty amazing cankles and all I wanted was a foot massage. I had been getting my feet massaged on a weekly basis while living in Australia and first off the price here is half of what I paid over there. Not just that but the ambiance of the place was peaceful and the chairs were amazingly comfortable. I also enjoyed the national geographic ocean movie they had playing on the big screen. The petite woman who gave me my massage made sure my big belly and I were 100% comfortable before she started and I was pleasantly surprised that while my feet soaked she massaged my scalp, face and arms. Then she went to town on my feel massaging away all of the edema and I floated off into bliss land. After what felt like forever on my feet she rubbed them down with a warm wet towel and I got sad thinking this was the end. I was wrong, she then had me sit up and she massaged my neck. shoulders and back for a good 10 minutes more. For $25 this is a steal. Anyone who complains should have to move to Australia and pay double for a hole in the wall place that doesn't do half of what this wonderful woman did. The only thing that made me raise an eyebrow was the woman in another chair who seemed to be enjoying her massage quite vocally, the grunts and moans coming from her vigorous massage finally made me open my eyes just to see what the fuss was about. Fantastic place! I write this review after visiting a couple of other foot massage places in the peninsula. I had assumed that most places had a similar flow to the massage and boy was I wrong! the two other places were in sunnyvale and santa clara and both have a very disruptive method to the one hour massage--I was constantly asked to change positions just when I got into a relaxed state of mind! the other issue is that most places are not private. With June massage, the massage area is semi private, you would be with one other person in the same space. I love the flow for the massage--15 minutes of head, neck and arms, 15 minutes on each foot followed by a back and leg massage. i also like that it is very clean. I go here often and come out refreshed. Most massage therapists are good. read more

This is now my only recommendation for a $25 massage. Simple and uncented, SAM went the extra 3 minutes to break out of the usual auto-bot mode these places are now infamous for. A little elbow here and a pinch there and my laptop neck almost gave in. The other places have a lot to improve to get up to the cleanliness and service of a straight forward chair massage. The one in santa cruz, Happy Feet, is almost on par but the run down room and the kung fu movie keeps it a notch below this $25 find. Buy 10 and get 2 free. Have been here more than 6 mths twice a week. Normally would give it 3.5 stars but 2 after today's experience. I walked in and asked if my regular lady is here and the receptionist imploded "NO". I LITERALLY thought she is about to explode. She did not give me an alternative and repeated no as if she is waiting for me to disappear. I gave her my best smile and asked for other female therapist. She swiftly and rudely said "LINDA" and marched in to get her. Now turns out I had Linda before and she is by far the weakest therapist I have had. It's not only she doesn't have very strong hands worst of all she doesn't give a monkey about her craft. Coming from a person who doesn't even like massages, this place is great! I went 4 weeks in a row! I requested Peter each time, he was really good and tailored to my really tight neck. The reason why it's not 5 stars is that, it is a little confusing as to what's going on because they don't explain to you (esp on your first time) as to what they're going to be doing and when they're going to do it. I also wish that they'd ask if I had a certain area that needed more massaging than another and have them focus on that more. this used to be a different name, Foot something, but they changed the name. it's the same management though and they upgraded the massage area. it's much nicer now. but for the foot massage there are two beds kind of close to each other in each "room" which is a curtained off area. it's a little weird to be so close to a stranger also getting a massage, but just close your eyes and go with it. you really can't compare this to a more expensive place. in my many times here I've found the massage can vary wildly depending on who you get. I've only had a foot massage here (which, like all other "foot massage" places, means about 15 mins of foot massage and the rest, full body, fully clothed). Considering it's only $25, it's hard to say I've ever had a bad massage and some were great, but it's a crap shoot. I am not sure if you can reserve a particular masseuse, I've just always taken whoever is available. Every time I've had a great massage I get the name, but they're not available whenever I go back. I suspect there's a lot of turnover. I get a massage at least once a week, either Thai (expensive), regular Chinese (moderate) or foot massage (cheap) and as long as you set your expectations accordingly, you won't be disappointed here. read more

Spending a week in Los Altos at the Marriott next door and found this convenient and clean foot massage place. Sam did a terrific job, really worked my calves and it wasn't just a foot massage, he kneaded out some serious laptop knots out of my shoulders and neck, too. It was so terrific I am going back tomorrow and asking for a little more time on my hamstrings, shoulders and neck! THIS is what I want in a massage: efficiency, a bit of violence, and a lack of whale music. There is nothing scented or super spa like here, but I was expecting it to be more ghetto. It is a darkened room of recliners and its very relaxing. Instead of being all nurturing and working on specific knots, they basically hit every pressure point on your body is a very thorough and aggressive way. Also it cost $25 bucks. Then when I asked if I could leave the tip on my card the lady gets really rude and says I need to tell her before she swipes it. I said ok next time I'll leave tip, she said "no right now!" After looking at yelp reviews, I was reluctant to try it as I had never been to a foot massage place. I went in on a Saturday afternoon and they asked if I could wait for 30 minutes for an available therapist. I had nowhere to be, so I was fine waiting. Based in the pictures, I was expecting to be in a reclining chair, but was taken to an area that had two beds and was separated by thin curtains to other areas that had two beds in each location. I'm sure your service greatly depend on who you get as your therapist, I was just lucky by chance. I usually prefer female masseuses when I get massages but was happy I was paired up with the male masseuse who was firm with the pressure, but that's what I was looking for. Since this was my first time at a Chinese foot massage, I was happy to experience what was pretty much a whole body massage. You can't beat that for the price they're offering! Based on previous reviews, I tipped $20. Totally worth it! I'm just sad I'm never in this area since I live in so cal or I would be a frequent flyer. read more

Up until a few weeks ago, I have had satisfactory experiences and visited weekly. Each time leaving a $10 tip for a 1hr foot massage. After a 1 hour foot massage, the clerk at the desk was rude and disrespectful to say the least. The clerk refused to give me back my debit card after she realized her card reader would not power on because it was not charged. Clerk made me wait 20 minutes for her chip card reader to charge and power on before giving me back my debit card. I offered to get cash from the Wells Fargo ATM across the street but the woman refused to give me back my card. She repeatedly tried to run the card via swipe which was unsuccessful because the card has the security chip. After 20 minutes of arguing, the card chip reader finally charged and payment ran successfully. This is the first time I have dealt with this particular clerk and this place will no longer earn my business. June Massage uses a "Square" type device for point-of-sale. On multiple occasions their iPad has had poor wifi and they have to take your card to the back room to process it. This time, the chip card reader was completely dead. This establishment has no respect for their customer's time. I am writing this review after 20+ visits that were for the most part positive. During this visit, I was treated very poorly as a result of June Massage not being prepared for their business day. Having their point of sale equipment charged and functioning is their responsibility and should not inconvenience the customer. There are several other places nearby (one is just down El Camino) offering 1hr foot massage for the same price or cheaper. These inexpensive foot massage places are a dime a dozen and your money is better spent elsewhere. read more
