Let me preface this by saying this is my first ever 1 star review - I generally come to Yelp to share my experience with good things, and thanks to the reviews of others I rarely end up having an experience that merits a one star review. In this case, I wanted very much to like JWATCH/Chelsea Watch Repair, as it is just down the street and I have a small collection of vintage watches that tend to need a little more love than their modern counterparts. I think that if you need basic work done (quartz battery swaps, bracelet adjustments and simple mechanical services) then this shop is probanly just fine. They've got a nice little storefront and everyone I interacted with seemed pleasant, if not a bit short. However - for complicated work on rare or higher end pieces, I'd stay far away. I took my '69 Tudor Date+Day to JWATCH on October 9th to get an estimate for service on the movement, screw down crown and a scratch on the crystal, hoping an independent shop would come in with a lower quote and faster turnaround versus sending it to the Rolex Service Center in TX. They told me it would be 5-10 days until I got the estimate, and work could proceed from there - fair enough. On October 19th (10 day mark) I sent a message through their online repair portal asking if they had any news. I didn't get a reply, so I called on October 21st and received a message from the phone company that the number was not in service. Apparently, when they are closed they somehow disconnect their entire phone system instead of taking voicemails, because the number worked the next day. I called back again on the 22nd and finally reached someone; who told me that they would look at my watch tomorrow. On the 23rd (14 days) later they send me a quote for nearly $1,000, which was significantly higher than even Rolex wanted. I presume they didn't want to do the complicated work and threw out a crazy number figuring it would be worthwhile if I did accept, which I did not. I went the next day to pick up my watch, ready to move on - however, this is where it becomes a one star review: When I got home, I went to set the watch (which hadn't been wound the entire time, which is how I know they were just sitting on it) and the crown and stem just FELL OFF. Literally fell apart - mind you, the watch was perfectly intact when I dropped it off. I thought about taking it back but decided to stop by the highly rated Star Watch Repair in Midtown before wasting another week with JWATCH. Star took one look at the watch, fixed everything JWATCH had broken right in front of me and then quoted a significantly more reasonable $500 for the work I requested. I picked it up from him 10 days later (total) and its perfect. Like I said, this is my first ever one star review and it really didn't have to be, but their lack of communication and the gall of returning a watch that hadn't been put back together gives me no other choice. Updated review from my initial below: Two reasons this is dropping from 5 stars to 1. 1. I agreed to $75 for the watch repair- I was billed $150 on my statement. I emailed and they immediately refunded the $75 so I left the review below as it was and let it go- maybe it was an honest mistake. 2. Then, my watch face cracked diagonally without being dropped or hit. The reality is the face was supposed to be replaced with beveled crystal and it's not crystal- it's glass. When I reached out to the shop via Yelp messaging they told me that happens and that it is crystal and due to a beveled edge -This is not true. If it was Dior and other watch companies would bevel edges. I had my Dior watch for almost 8 years and it had no scratches on the crystal face and never had an issue. The crystal cracked and had to be repaired because I dropped face down on a marble floor not in day to day wear. The watch is now being sent back to Dior so they can do a proper job. I'm disappointed as I thought this was a true beveled crystal replacement by J Watch but it wasn't. I wasn't $75 and my time. ---------------- A few months ago I shattered the crystal beveled face of my Le Baby Dior Christian Dior watch and could not find anyone in the Boston area capable of replacing and fixing it. For months my beautiful watch sat my bedside broken. Then I decided I needed to ship it out to J Watch repair in NYC. I was nervous to do this as they were not local, I had to risk losing it in the mail, and I had to trust a company based solely on Yelp reviews. Well, I can tell you J WATCH delivered 100%! My watch came home 2 weeks after I shipped it in mint condition. It is P-E-R-F-E-C-T!!! If I could give this shop a perfect 10 for their communication, response time when I initially reached out on Yelp and how carefully they picked it for the trip home I would. Jamie, I haven't even worn the watch in the five months since you worked on it, I've been so angry about what happened. The photo I posted is exactly the way your shop gave the watch back to me. Take a closer look at your "after" photos. I know it was extremely difficult to get the case open, you told me that it took you over an hour! The point is that you should've simply informed me that there was a possibility of damaging it. Regarding polishing out the gouges your shop made, you know that polishing an original, vintage watch case devalues it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I'm not inclined to bring it back to your shop, period. I really wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, I thought this might have been a one-off issue. But instead of simply owning up to the mistake and apologizing, you're trying to claim it never happened. That just makes an unfortunate situation even worse. The battery in my watch died. Although this is an acceptable excuse for being late once or twice...I admit it: I let it go too far. Eventually, all my friends stopped taking my calls. They stopped answering my texts. It got to the point that they would spit in my face when I knocked on their doors, refusing to even let me explain. Because nobody likes it when someone is perpetually late. It's rude.* In the hopes of one day feeling what it's like to be loved once more, I searched and searched and discovered that the city's top-rated watch repair shop is a block from my office. I walked in about 15 minutes before JWATCH was scheduled to close, hoping to at least drop off my watch for a pickup at a later date. I noticed three things behind the counter: 1. A bowl of candy. 2. A sign that said, "Cash is appreciated." 3. A nice lady, that started to apologize because their watchmaker was done for the day. As she started her apology, a voice in the next room assured her it was cool in Spanish, he could handle the repair. So the nice lady told me it would be $15. I paid cash because they appreciate it, and took the last Reese's because I appreciate chocolatey, peanut buttery goodness. I brought my husband's Tag Heuer watch to JWATCH to get a new battery. They broke the nob on the side (the one you use to change the date and time). I also brought my heart rate monitor watch for a new battery and it works just fine. I think this place is okay for lower end watch models, but my husband's $2k Swiss watch did not make it. Can't complain about the staff as everyone was always polite and nice, but the work they have done on watches was subpar to say the least. The $250 spend was simply a waste of money as both watches "repaired" felt apart in less than 48h. The Richard and Co keeps fogging up after they've changed the mechanism. Never before this was an issue. Additionally had to bring back TAG 3-4 times to get the pins re-changed (I assume that they never were changed to begin with) as they kept popping out, and guess what... yesterday my husband lost the watch as the pin must of came off yet another time. I went specifically out of my way to support the Chelsea Watch Shop because I read it was a woman-owned business. Am I ever glad I did. The women at the store could not be friendlier! I brought in my father's vintage Rolex to have resized to my smaller wrist. Expecting to wait a week for service, the owner was there and fixed it on the spot in less than 5 minutes. $32. She even gave me a brief tutorial on how to set it, since it had been ages since I actually wore a watch. It's a tucked away little spot, that oozes charm and good energy, in a super convenient location. The reviews from a couple years ago don't even seem like the same place. What an incredibly friendly place!! I have a beautiful Movado that had a screw missing. They were able to replace it, which is rare because most places do not carry them, and it was done in 5 minutes. I'd like to point out that the ratings for JWATCH and most other watchmakers are incredibly inflated on Yelp. Honestly, anyone with two hands could change a battery or shorten a bracelet... I came to JWATCH to have the crystal on my Orient Ray Raven (automatic mechanical watch, no batteries) replaced with a domed sapphire crystal I had purchased from an aftermarket supplier. I believe that there are two people who run the shop, the owner and the watchmaker. I told the owner that I had a DOMED crystal and that I would like her to install it. I do remember her saying something about the crystal being flat, but since I thought that she was referring to the original crystal, I didn't say anything. About 10 minutes later she returned to tell me that my watch was no longer working... Now this was a watch that was 100% functional just two days ago! She gave it to her watchmaker for a second opinion. He recommended that I get a servicing done ($120) to clean out the "coagulated oils" in the mainspring and balance wheel. Now I understand that this is the equivalent of a doctor suggesting an MRI when he doesn't know what the problem is, but my watch had literally just been working a few days ago! Furthermore, it was a fairly new watch and there was little chance the oils would have coagulated already since I wore it regularly. So clearly, something she did had just caused it stop working! Since I had my doubts, I decided to take the watch over to Maddox Watch Co. in FiDi (see my review, things did not go smoothly either). While I was walking there, I realized that it was certainly possible that JWATCH had installed my crystal upside down. The slight dome on the crystal would be enough to prevent the seconds hand from moving. I called up JWATCH but the owner reiterated that the crystal was flat on both sides. When I took it to Mr. Maddox, he confirmed that the crystal was indeed domed and installed upside down. He "fixed" it and I walked out with a "functioning watch". I returned to JWATCH to show the owner that my watch was working again. She did seem sorry about it and she was able to do a much better job of lining up the crystal after Mr. Maddox did a crap job plopping it in. Also, because Mr. Maddox broke a pusher on my watch in the process, she tried really hard to help me find a replacement part. Conclusion: I'm unhappy that the crystal was installed upside down. I understand that the owner was busy and probably didn't look carefully to see if my crystal was domed, but that's inexcusable when I told her it was. It couldn't have been good for the watch having the seconds hand impeded by the crystal while the mainspring was still trying to unwind. However, she was very helpful when I came back and did try to ameliorate the mess of a watch Mr. Maddox (see my review of Maddox Watch Co.) left me with. Finally, the $10 for changing the crystal is a very reasonable. Edit: Because I did not come in to have my watch serviced, I can't speak to the skills of the watchmaker. read more

My vintage Omega was in need of an overhaul and was running 80+ seconds/day due to an imbalance in the movement. I stopped by JWATCH after shopping around for a legitimate watchmaker to no avail. Whereas other shops told me they were unwilling to open my watch and/or didn't want to take the risk upon themselves, JWATCH assured me that they would be able to get my Omega back up to specifications. Given that my watch is 60+ years old, needless to say I had my worries. JWATCH did an amazing job keeping me updated throughout the entire process, and emailed me photos of my movement before and after overhaul. After picking up my watch, the movement was working as it should be, and also came with a 1 year warranty. Amazing work and customer service. Turnaround time took about roughly 1 month, and the price was a bit steeper than other watchmakers, but definitely beats going to Omega and having it shipped off to Switzerland for 6 months. Removing one star because when I picked up my watch, I noticed that the second-hand was not the original that belonged to my Omega. Turned out that they had accidentally placed another customer's Omega second-hand into my watch. read more

I visited this strangely located shop looking for a replacement watch band. I needed an odd size and I'd been disappointed by other watch places, including Central Watch. The folks at Jwatch were incredibly friendly, professional and thoughtful. They didn't have a band in stock but offered to hold on to the watch to search out and test some possibilities for fit and look. I shrugged and left it with them. The next day they sent me an email with photos of three band possibilities mounted on my watch to see if I liked any. I did, and they had the now complete watch waiting for me that afternoon at an absurdly reasonable price. In all, my experience at Jwatch was absolutely positive. Don't be put off by having to visit the fifth floor of a partly residential building and having to knock on the door. Once inside, the service and presentation of the place is tidy, and everyone on the staff was terrific. read more

Received a Swatch watch from the missus for my birthday but there were too many links and the watch was falling off my arm. While in the Union Square area on business, I yelped watch repair and I think JWATCH came up at or close to the top of the list. I scoped out the address and made my way up (its sandwiched between a Sprint Store and a Potbelly and does't have a storefront; its basically a 5th floor suite in a low-rise office building). Once at the door, I rang the bell and was promptly buzzed inside. The location is quite quaint and the people super helpful and friendly. A quick explanation of the situation and review of the watch yielded a very reasonable quote for adjustment. After agreeing to the quote, I sat for five minutes while the excess links were removed. Satisfied with the results of the work (and my dope looking watch which looked even more dope now that it fit better on my arm) I gratefully thanked the JWATCH team for their service and went on with the rest of my day. I found this little hole-in-the-wall on Yelp, and figured that the 5 stars (except for one cheapo who complained about the price!) meant that J was worth trying. YES. I'm not really a watch guy, but had a great experience here. After a few years of good service, I stopped by to see if JWATCH could fix my automatic watch. The caveat? At $50 retail, the thing wasn't really expensive enough to merit the full treatment. JWATCH was happy to take a look, and promised they wouldn't charge if the repair cost more than the value of the watch itself. End of the story? They quickly fixed the problem, happily gave advice about the issue, and even tuned up the watch again later for free, when the same problem reared its head again. A class act. read more

They email you when the watches are repaired and if you can't make it that day, you can simply email back to let them know and they actually read the emails because they respond! Thats refreshing. Really debated where to bring my Tag. It had been acting up running on and off even after being fully wound, and I even put it on a winder. J Watch had some great reviews, but a lot of people were commenting on battery replacements, but I was get an Auto looked at, so I was somewhat skeptical. Ended up going in and they knew immediately what was wrong (when I mentioned I hadn't had it serviced in 8 years). Took it in, got it cleaned, lubed and water tested and it was 100% good to go. I was impressed with the reports I got back with my watch on its functionally and the stress to bring it back in if anything seemed off for longer than a couple weeks. My Movado tungsten watch, an expensive and rare Movado, had water damage that I didn't even notice until i brought the watch in. The watch just stopped running altogether and at first I thought it was a dead battery but turns out the problem was more severe. I thought this must be it, a 1500$watch down the drain. Nope, Jwatch took my watch in and fixed it like it was child's play. All for a fraction of hte price that Movado quoted me to fix. Went to the shop after store hours but was greeted by very friendly and straightforward service without complaint. Replaced battery for a Burberry watch (10 mins) and had the metal band polished (45 mins). I think the shop person was in a little bit of a rush, as the time was set off by an hour and part of the polishing was not entirely complete when I picked it up. Upon observation, she quickly apologized, went back and corrected the polishing. But all in all, a positive experience with candid, direct service. read more

I have a Rolex 6694 from 1971 that I was restoring, but it needed some additional work. Another well regarded watch repair guy in the city had replaced the crystal and cleaned it up for me, but it still wasn't working right. I would wind it but the wind would only last 12 hours or so. I knew this wasn't right, so I did my research and decided to trust JWATCH with the repair. I walked in and was greeted warmly. Their location is very convenient and I had no trouble finding them. I described the problem to Jamie and she took the watch aside for a look. Turns out the repair I had done wasn't complete and the watch needed a new mainspring. I was a bit disappointed that the prior watch repair guy dropped the ball on this, so I resolved to take that matter up with him and get a rebate for what he had charged me. But for now, a watch that only works for 12 hours at a clip just isn't good enough. I left the watch with JWATCH and they sent me an estimate the next day. The price was very good and fair, and I approved the work. They said they needed about 15 business days to do the repairs and testing, and I said great, no rush. Just do what you do. And I left them alone for the time period. Just under three weeks later, the friendly folks at JWATCH called me and left me a message, and they emailed me, too. They let me know my watch was ready for pickup. I went by later that afternoon and Jamie gave me some more pointers and tips, which I appreciated. The watch is working fine now, and a full wind keeps it running for about 40 hours, which is right. I will be bringing all my watches to JWATCH in the future. Awesome! They were open at 9am, unlike every other watch repair shop in the area. They changed my watch band and took out a large number of links (I have baby wrists) for $10. It took 5 minutes and they did it while I waited. Someone else called this place a hole-in-the-wall, so I was expecting it to look like a crazy den of watch parts, but it's actually meticulously neat and furnished impeccably with IKEA furniture and framed pictures of high-end watches on all the walls. Just have to update my review to let you know this place is more than great. Went in because I was concerned that my fairly new (to me) watch was sitting in a box for years, and it may possibly need servicing. I brought up my concerns with the watchmaker, and she started filling out paperwork to bring my watch to the back. Mind you, she was just working on a project, and came out quickly to help me with my watch, on the spot. She took it to the back, and checked the accuracy right away in 5 minutes flat. When my watched stopped working, I chose Jwatch based on the reviews, and the service there was perfect. The place isn't THAT hard to find, just walk in the building and take the elevator to the 5th Floor. My watch had short-circuited when I tried to replace a battery myself, but they were able to order the part and fix in the watch in about a day, all for $35. (And it appears that all they do are watches--this isn't a "watch repair" inside a dry cleaner.) Even though my watch was not too expensive, I was glad to get it repaired rather than shopping for a new one. Highly recommended. read more

I needed to service an antique 19th century Russian pocket watch. The person at the reception took one look at the watch (didn't even open it) and refused the service. He said that Russian watches are of poor quality and there are no parts and my best bet is to try to one of the Midtown shops. That was actually a good advice as I did have my watch serviced there and it works well. In the process I learned that all antique Russian watches had German, Swiss or American movement and were simply customized to the retail shop specifications. Seem that Jwatch have little love or care for what the do and don't mind being culturally insensitive. However, they do see nice candles, and if you are in the market for candles I can suggest you pay them a visit. read more

I found this place one day in the "local" app on android after searching watch repair. At first I was a little skeptical about a store that looked like it was more of an apartment building than anything else but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I'm a stickler when it comes to customer service and I must say that theirs is amazing. Not only did they fix my watch at a price far from Manhattan like prices but they were so quick! Finally it fits. What prompted me to write this review though isn't the fact that my watch fits but the follow up e-mail I received the next day as well as the handwritten thank you card I received in the mail today. Had a great experience with a bracelet adjustment on my Seiko. I was unable to make the change due to Seiko's use of a pin and collar system. Too small for my clumsy hands to deal with. They didn't flinch. I was in and out of there in minutes. I'll definitely be back. Thank you! read more
