While visiting Brenham, TX this place was recommended to try out for dinner. Upon entering there was quite a crowd at the door waiting to be seated. Most were large groups and families, so I had high hopes that a table for 2 would be easy to come by. Being that there was a football playoff game, I agreed to sit at the bar so that my date would be able to check out the game. The very friendly hostess approached us immediately and when we told her we'd like to sit at the bar she immediately escorted us to the bar and secured us some seats. The decor is as to be expected, very "Texas hill country" with stained pine walls and deer/rustic items hanging on the wall. The menu options are as to be expected. Miscellaneous fried appetizers, simple salads, steak, seafood, and a list of sides to choose from. Something unexpected was an extensive wine list. There were many choices in all price ranges. Plenty to chose from by the glass as well. We chose a Cabernet that costs around $14 at the grocery store, priced at $25 here, which I found very reasonable. I had filet mignon on the mind so I knew that was what I was going to order. I chose a side item off the specials of the week that was a cucumber salad and got a baked potato. My date ordered a ribeye, a Caesar salad, and another special side item of mashed sweet potato. Our steaks were both cooked perfectly and the side items were truly delicious. My cucumber salad was thinly sliced cucumbers with a simple vinegar and sugar marinade. The mashed sweet potatoes were fabulous as well. They tasted like a sweet potato pie. Wine and dinner was under $80, which would have been an impossible feat in or around the Houston area. My only small complaint is that I wish they had a wedge salad on the menu. This is something I always crave when I have a steak and I'm sure that JW's could add that to the menu with minimum trouble. All in all, I'd come here again if I'm in the area. It's a great little small town restaurant with more to offer than it's counterparts. read more

Our first time ever at JW Steakhouse in carmine Texas and it was the absolute best!! We're from Mont Belvieu area and we came to stay the weekend in Brenham at an airbnb and were out and about shopping and antiquing all day looked up "steakhouses near us" and this one popped up, glad we decided to eat here, best decision ever!! Steaks are tender n juice, cooked to perfection, green beans and cucumber salad was awesome tasting as well...definitely will eat here again.. Def an A+ 5 stars no doubt!!! read more

I hate hate hate to leave bad reviews, and what is the purpose unless there can be something positive-something constructive to be served? This week is Antique week in our area, and all our restaurants are slammed. My wife and I support local restaurants because they mean so much to older people like us. Having said that...a $75 (meal plus tip) got us cool temperature Golden Corral-quality ribeye, cold baked potato, and rubbery, frankly gross oysters that plopped right out of the cooled and oddly textured batter as soon as they could be freed. The cucumber salad and fries were ok, the beer was cold. We have heard so much about this restaurant and the restaurant was filling up fast as we were leaving, but we were so disappointed. Even our waitress seemed embarrassed, though we said nothing, paid our bill and gritched all the way home. Maybe we will give it another try, but not during Antique week for certain. read more

It was absolutely great! Even with a large group meeting there, our party of 13 was taken care of by Natalie. On top of everything, she made sure to check with us numerous times along with a full dining room. AND THE ONION RINGS DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! Lunch specials were great and the sides and Mexican cornbread...yumm! We have discovered a easy half way point for east and west families. A gem in the wilderness! First time was a stop early afternoon about midway between NW Houston and Austin. Had passed it a few times before and vowed to stop someday. That day finally arrived today, and I am glad it did! The food & service was excellent, and the location was so convenient - right off US290 in Carmin, TX. I had the Friday special (fried catfish), wife had the chicken-fried steak and daughter-in-law had a hamburger - each one off the lunch menu for less than 10 bucks. Great little steak house in the middle of Nowhere Texas. If you are traveling by and you want some decent steak, this is a good one. I am not overly impressed with how they season the steaks, but the quality is good . I liked how they put a little plastic sign on my steak that said "medium rare". Fried potatoes and onion rings are a little bland, but overall a good experience. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Prices are great for those of us used to NYC prices. Pardon me as I pound this keyboard over my experience tonight at JW's. It's a good thing the manager here works in this little podunk town because he would never be qualified to manage anything in a more contemporary venue. I walked in JW's at 6:23 p.m. and was told it would be a 45 minute wait for a party of 4. It was packed and crazy busy because of antique week but the hostess, bartenders and servers seemed to be handling it beautifully. We were seated at 7:15. Our waitress was great, pleasant, and attentive. We ordered some drinks and onion rings immediately and then we waited.......... and waited.........and waited. Finally, a good 30 minutes later, she brings our rings- and they are cold. Cold, fried, onion rings. We complained, she took them back and within 3 minutes we had a hot replacement. Then we waited again......what seemed to be another 20 minutes for salads! Then another 20 minutes for our entrees (one steak, one catfish dish). I was so embarrassed for recommending this place to my friends I got up from the table THREE TIMES to complain to someone. Around 8:35 I said, "If our entrees are not on the table in three minutes, we are leaving without paying for anything." Suddenly they appeared. When our waitress checked in on us I said, "Bring everything right now. The pies, the check, everything." I wasn't going to wait another second. When we got the check, nothing was comped. Not even a frickin' piece of pie! By this time the manager and all the staff knew I was mad as hell so it was no surprise when I went to the register for the fourth time and a young man was standing there and I asked if he was the manager. He said he was and I asked if he could please comp something because of our wait. Without taking even a beat he boldly said, "No. Your order was put in at 8:00, that is not an unreasonable time to wait." Note; our check said 8:54 when we were ready to check out. This means that someone screwed up and our order was NOT placed between 7:15-7:30 when we sat down! I was stunned. I have never had a manager, waitress, or owner bark back at me this way assuming I was making this stuff up! I was floored at how down right defiant he was being. After a few words were exchanged, I said, "Fine. Then I am leaving you a scathing Yelp review." I was fuming. If I was an owner I would have fired his ass in a heart beat. I took our waitress aside and told her how sorry I was for her asinine boss. She said she did explain to him it took forever for us to get our food, evidently he thought I was lying and that was the end of it. When our party walked out the front door, he was there to open it for us. Still fuming, I told him, "No thanks, I can open my own door." He said, "I just don't respond well to threats!" Threats? I am talking about basic customer service. Move on to McDonald's mister. You're better suited for a drive thru. read more

JW's is a really cute restaurant in the heart of Carmine, TX. Carmine does not have much to do at all and really needed a good restaurant!!! The place is very cute, newly remodeled and Very clean. The service is good and the food is great. I have had a hamburger that was yummy and a chicken fried steak that was very very good, it was not tough at all. I Love it when they have fried okra, which I think they should have all of the time but that is OK. Also they make their own ranch dressing that is really different, fresh and yummy tasting! *whispers: don't tell anyone but I'm sneaking back in to Yelp to write a half-hearted update and probably sneaking right back out again* Okay, so I've now been to this place at least a handful of times since that first visit. I think the first time I went back I again got the chicken strips though they weren't on special that day and cost over $10 even at lunch (which is well, just freaking insane, really, but I guess that was on a day when my job had been driving me crazy). They weren't as good as they'd been on special because they weren't really seasoned that time, so they definitely weren't worth the money. So basically that taught me to always order the good old $8 daily lunch special including drink. I've followed that rule for all of my subsequent visits, so it's worked out pretty well. At some point I also learned that even though french fries aren't listed as a side for the specials, they can be substituted at no extra charge. In general it's pretty easy to tell which sides will be horrible frozen veggies, so I just avoid those. Other than fries, for sides I've had pretty decent cucumber salad (rather plain like grandma used to make/still makes), black-eyed peas (I think... memory is a little hazy on that one for some reason), and green peas (one of the least horrible frozen veggies). I've seen others eating carrot salad (you know, the kind with raisins in it), and it looks okay. For proteins I've tried the fried catfish and the fried chicken, both were good. I heard an older fellow order his catfish "crispy" when that was the special, and when mine arrived I decided that was probably a good idea. The fish was a generous portion and was definitely cleaned properly, but the texture was a bit lacking as it was not in fact "crispy." I still really liked it though. When I ordered the fried chicken on a later visit it was also quite tasty... I was asked if I wanted dark or white meat, and asked for white. I ended up with a breast and a wing, and was happy that they weren't monster-chicken-sized. This was nowhere near as good as grandma's (but nothing is, I'm pretty sad that she's hung up her apron in terms of making that dish) but worked in a pinch, not too greasy and not too dry (which I know is difficult with chicken breast). I also got a sort of oddball special once that did not come with the usual sides: it was a grilled cheese sandwich that came with a bowl of "turkey vegetable soup." I swear the other lunch special that day was some kind of Spanish Meatloaf or something, so sandwich and soup it was. When I got my food I was overwhelmed with nostalgia for my elementary school lunchroom's offerings... a compliment, the food there was actually good! The difference is that from the lunchroom the sandwich was squished and greasy though still yummy, and the soup was beef-vegetable. This sandwich at JW's was taller and lighter, but still two pieces of bread glued together by american cheese (which I detest in any other context, including the grilled cheese I make at home... no Kraft Singles in my house!). I did what I haven't done in over 20 years and dipped my grilled cheese in ketchup! And I liked it! The soup was really flavorful too, with good veggies and savory turkey (maybe left over from Thanksgiving, I think this was soon afterward), and a slight spiciness that reminded me of chicken tortilla soup. Desserts included with the specials have not been memorable, really but that's fine... I think I got a nicely doughy peanut butter cookie once, and last time I had a decent little square of bread pudding which at least was squishy enough for me if not really embellished in any way (you know, no fruit included or discernable sauce). I'm sure I'll be going back once in awhile when I'm in the area and hungry, and will most likely stick to lunch specials (though the hamburgers on the regular menu are not as overpriced as the chicken strips so I may try one of those eventually). EDIT: Oh, I forgot to say that this place actually seems to have decent beer on tap. I actually saw Austin Amber and Fireman's #4 and have rarely seen either outside of Austin! JW's is amazing. Some of the best steaks I've ever had anywhere - very tender and flavorful. Also the homemade buns and rolls are out of this world, especially with the burgers (which are huge). I love the homemade salad dressings as well, and the onion rings come in literal mountains -- order accordingly! It is a little pricier than say, Saltgrass, but the quality of food and quantity you get are definitely worth the trip! read more

I stopped by this evening for dinner after a trip from Houston. I was kind of weary being the entire town population is only 250, but I was glad I stopped. I ordered the surf n turf which was an 8 oz sirloin and three shrimp. My steak was thick and cooked perfectly. No steak sauce was needed due to the seasoning. The meal came with a baked potato loaded which could have been a meal in itself as big as it was and a Caesar salad. The service was excellent. The restaurant and restroom were quite clean. I live just five miles from here. If you eat here don't order the seafood. I was craving seafood and ordered the seafood platter. The oysters were really bad. Tasteless. The catfish fillets were so small that the breading completely overpowered them and I could barely taste the fish. The shrimp were just OK. $21.95 for four shrimp, four oysters and four small fillets. Expensive for such small portions. The steaks here are pretty good. While usually very dependable, last night was easily the worst experience I've had at this restaurant. It was a busy midweek evening which started odd as they were only serving beer or wine instead of their normal full bar but it is during a pandemic so no big deal. The sever was great and the appetizers were good as normal. I ordered the surf & turf, the shrimp were excellent but the sirloin while ordered medium rare came out past medium well. So when asked how it was, I mentioned the serious overcook and the sever immediately offered a re-do with the caveat that it might be 20 minutes on this busy night. Cool, we were enjoying the rest of the meal and were happy to accommodate the delay. The new steak came out at the expected time and it was rare/raw. The server was apologetic but said it would be another 20 minutes if I wanted the steak cooked more (it was bleeding). This kind of bad service was clearly intentional and a huge disappointment for what is normally a dependable special meal. read more

This probably our fourth visit over the past couple of years. Each time our expectations of great food and service is met. My DH and son ordered 12 oz ribeye steaks and I had the chicken fried chicken. Both meats were tender enough to slice with a fork! The Cesar salad, coleslaw , baked potato, fries, mashed potatoes and okra were delicious too. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs. The manager introduced himself making us feel welcome. Decided to try something different for dinner. JWs is a quick drive from La Grange where we work. My husband had the small filet cooked medium rare and added grilled shrimp. Filet was on the small side but flavorfully seasoned and cooked to perfection. We've been working in Texas since March 2018 and eaten at restaurants from Corpus to Beaumont. This was the best steak we've had in Texas. I ordered the grilled shrimp blackened. The shrimp were medium size and a little on the dry side but they were blackened after all. The squash casserole was delicious and was more like a savory bread pudding than a casserole. Could easily be served as a savory dessert. Dinner was also served with homemade yeast rolls that were large and fluffy. Very soft and tasty. We didn't try the pies but they looked delicious as well. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Would definitely eat here again and recommend JWs if you're in the mood for a good steak. read more

My wife and I went here on recommendation of several of our family in the area; This place was very busy but we had almost no wait at 6 o'clock on Friday night ( there was a wait when we left though); portions were huge!! and prices very reasonable; we had Bottle caps for appetizers (fried red and green jalapenos) which were very tasty; wife had a grilled chicken and was good but nothing special; i had chicken fried steak and the breading was excellent; the gravy was also very tasty; the meat was a little dry and not very tender but not bad; service was excellent and extremely attentive which is always a huge selling point to us; will probably go back just because of that read more

My husband and I have been dining at JW's for a couple of years now. It's always a pleasant experience, but I have to say that it used to be better. The quality of the steaks is not what it used to be. Maybe they switched from prime to choice........ or maybe from choice to select? JW's has changed the brand of Prosecco they serve. It's not as good as the other one they used to serve. Also, I sure wish they would offer some French red wines..... Almost all their wines are from CA, except for a few malbecs.
