Excellent food and service. It's always exciting when you go and you see the locals are there and recognized by the staff. Our server was exceptional and I wish I would have gotten his name. He was very busy but extremely attentive. This place was recommended by multiple people and it did not disappoint. We started off by having the onion rings which were delicious. I had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans and my friend had chicken fried steak mashed potatoes and cucumber salad. The food was over the top and the portions were huge that we took the rest of ours home and had it for breakfast the next morning. All homemade and I wish we would've saved room to have a homemade dessert but we were completely stuffed. I can't wait to go back as we were visiting for the round top antique show, but it will definitely be on my list to go back next year.

If you traverse Highway 290 between Austin and Houston, you have passed this place a million times and probably didn't even know it. Situated in the little town of Carmine, which is one of those towns that makes you slow down to 55 miles an hour, this place is absolutely incredible. The Burger? One of the best in Texas. The onion rings? They are famous for a reason. The chicken fried steak? The best I have ever had. The place is upscale but casual, so check your pretension at the door. Nice folks, good food, fair prices.

Having made the reservation I showed up early to make sure everything was in place and was very happy to see they had set up a table for us in a private area near the bar that had fresh linens and menus and was clearly ready for us. Our waitress was excellent. Joking with our party she kept the drinks and food flowing. All of the entrees including an awesome minestrone soup, salad and various comfort food and steaks was amazing. The owner came out to thank us for our visit and to talk for bit and we loved it. We would very highly recommend as the quality of food and the level of service was outstanding!

We…read morerandomly scrolled on YouTube and watched someone rated this THE BEST in Texas so we had to check it out. What makes this place unique is that they use charcoal, have make their own rub, you can order as many ounces up to 32oz I believe, and they only sell ribeye steaks. The place is called the general store because that's what it used to be when first started doing business in the 1980s but later expanded and converted into a steakhouse. We got there at 4pm and there was a little bit of a line already. The restaurant is only open three days a week each day from 5:30 to 9. On Thursday they have fried catfish and Friday and Saturday they sell only steak. The minimum order starts at 10oz and each ounce increment is a little bit extra charge. We ordered the 24 ounce to be shared between the two of us total is about $70 and we still have some leftover. The charcoal flavor was not overpowering, but the seasoning of the steak was perfectly balanced. Usually, I eat my steak with extra pepper or chimichurri, but this one I was able to eat without any extra seasoning. The surface of the steak look heavily seared but the medium interior was really juicy and succulent. I could taste more char on the edge pieces. After the steak we headed to their second shop next door for some malt shake. I got the cookies n creame flavor, it was milky and not overly sweet like any other milkshakes. And the malt flavor lingers on the tongue after each sip. I was debating to get another one but chocolate flavor but I was too full. Service there overall was very welcoming, and dining area is really big, the interior feels like an old western cabin but very clean and spacious. Great for family gatherings too. They also have a BYOB offer for people who love some good sips along with the smokey steak.

The yeast roll looked like a roll but it was pretty heavenly too, especially with the steak drippings. Our server was super sweet and helpful! And the quaint "general store" is for locals and visitors alike!! Awesome steak night --perfect for a date night! Pass on dessert! Stick with best stuff! Pecan cobbler and peach cobbler were overly sweet! But they did come with a scoop Of vanilla ice cream on top!

When we arrived and let the hostess know we had made a reservation, she just pointed to our table to be seated. There was a table with about 6 sitting at it. I assumed they were regulars because the hostess was super engaging with that one table. I get that but you have a room full of patrons, at least make an effort. Our server was polite but her attentiveness felt forced and not sincere. The dining room, itself, had an odor of backed up sewage. I realize it's an older building but, do better. I would probably give this restaurant another chance and would be interested to find out if the vibe would be improved with a different mix of folks dining at my table.

The place harkens back to the German roots in the area, so for appetizers, we started with the fried bacon and the fried sausage and sauerkraut balls. Don't say no until you try it. They're amazing. My seafood Deluxe plate was about the best seafood plate I've ever had. The fried shrimp was very lightly dusted. It was just perfect and the fish had such a thin cornmeal crust. It wasn't over breaded. It was perfect. The stuffed crab was top-notch with a lovely sweet crab meat forward. Pair that with mash potatoes, salad and perfectly done squash casserole and you can't go wrong. Now to the steaks - done to order and generously sized. Very nice. Now to desserts!!!! The Stone Cellar is to the left and from there you can just order the food from the counter, whereas the lounge you will get table service. I would say the menu has pub/bar fare and given that we were both craving pizza and a hamburger, we decided to order one of each to split. The staff also mentioned the Fried Gouda Bites are popular, so we opted for those as well. Let's start with the latter - the Fried Gouda bites were amazing, everything you could expect from freshly deep-fried cheese, decadent and tasty, these are a must order. For the burger, we ordered The Standard, and as the name suggests, their standard burger (I call these "diner-style") and my brother and I both agreed - this is damn near the perfect burger and the best one I've had in quite some time. It was just the perfect amalgamation meat, condiments, and sauce, with a delicious bun holding it all in together. Finally, the margarita pesto pizza was also great - crispy thin crust and just the right amount of cheese and sauce. The ambience was about right for what they were going for, with a saloon-like feel. The staff were generally friendly. The music and TVs weren't too loud. Not bad there. Now... I ordered the Seafood Fettuccine, which had shrimp, crawfish and andouille sausage in a seafood type sauce. Kind of a cross between fettuccine alfredo and pastalaya, if you get my drift. The seafood, pasta and sausage were all cooked generally fine. What surprised me was how bland the dish was. The whole dish generally needed salt, (which I applied, and it did help) and it was screaming for some personality, in the form of Cajun seasoning, Louisiana hot sauce, or probably both. I guess if any cream was added to the sauce, it really diluted the flavor. The garlic bread that they served with it did the best it could to help. Keep in mind, I'm paying $30.58 for this project and a glass of sweet tea. On top of that, my debit card gets charged for another table by mistake. My waitress did apologize and reversed the payment, so that I would keep the money. I mean...it was good enough to get me to eat here the first time. But I'd be hard-pressed if it convinced me to eat here a second time, even if for a steak. With food prices getting higher and higher these days, I have to get pretty choosy about where I go for restaurants. This one...IDK.
