The short version: Was charged dinner price at lunch, when brought to waitress' attention I was told it was my fault I didn't specify I wanted lunch (noon on Friday). A lady that claimed she was the owner then threw $20 at me. Details: I walked in on a Friday as the "lunch whistle" was going off, so noon on the dot. I was looking at the lunch section on the back of the menu as I placed my order with my waitress. My mother ordered the same way. When the bill came, I thought it was high for lunch chicken tenders and hamburger steak, so I looked at the menu again and it showed different prices than I was charged. When I brought the price difference to my waitress' attention I was told that I should have specified I wanted the lunch portion and since I didn't, I was given the dinner portion. I've never had to specify I wanted the lunch option during lunch while ordering from the lunch menu any where else. The waitress went on to say that she normally asks which portion but was busy so she forgot to ask me. She acted like it was my fault that I wasn't more clear that I wanted lunch. She then started telling the manager that I didn't tell her I wanted lunch and I "didn't want to pay for the dinner that I got" again acting like it was my fault. There was about a $10 difference, so not really a big deal but how rude they both were and blaming me for "not ordering the lunch portion" was completely unnecessary. Then the waitress told me, well, your mom got 2 sides instead of 1 so she has to pay the dinner price. I was stunned by how they were acting. Then to make the matter even worse, the owner took $20 out of the register and literally threw it at me and asked if that would make me happy. I told her I wasn't owed $20 but that seemed to make her even more angry, like I had annoyed and offended her for having dared point out the price discrepancy. Aside from the bill mess, the food was not very good. My mother only took one bite of the coleslaw and then declared it inedible. My hamburger steak was bland and no where near worth $16. I don't know how many times I've driven on 290 on my way to my dad's place in Houston. Carmine is a place I just zoom on by (well I do acknowledge the 55 mph speed limit). I always notice a garden statutes and a bakery. But now all of a sudden I notice JW's Steakhouse. It's not on the road but on the side of the bakery. I was looking at the menu and everything looked good. I looked up and saw a waitress bring over onion rings. They was a huge stack of onion rings. This place gives generous portions. I ordered the fried shrimp with fries and a caesar salad. The food was good and hit the spot. The fries were not soggy nor was the fried shrimp. If you are on 290 on the way to Houston/Brenham/College Station, it's a definite must to stop here. If you are sick and tired of having drive-thru food along with the smell of it permeating in the car, I do recommend this place. read more

When you are out on 290 most restaurants are Barbecue, but JW's is a great steakhouse that you need to stop by. It is a casual place that seems to be the first stop for all of the local hunters. We had a wait when we got there so we went to the bar where they had a huge wine list that we weren't expecting. There were so many choices it made my head spin! They are a bit more expensive and most are sold by the bottle which limits your choices thankfully. They had great beers available as well so it was a nice place to sit and wait for our table. We were seated in a back booth so we seemed to be insulated from all of the people around us. We started with the "small" onion rings for our table of 4. We expected them to be small but of course they were huge! There were 10 on the plate with a peppery batter. You must get them as a starter! My boyfriend and I shared the large chicken fried steak with a side salad and French fries. It also comes with rolls and more than enough for both of us. I suggest sharing the plate. It was perfectly cut and the cream gravy did not overwhelm the chicken fried steak. I know other people like the steaks and the menu has s lot to offer But get the chicken fried steak! read more

For you old timers of Fayette County. Do you guys remember Cottonwood Inn Restaurant in La Grange? And they had stuffed steak called the Hailey (sp?) It had over a pound of ground beef, stuffed with Jalapeños, Onions, and TONS of cheese? Well, this Restaurant has it. BUT. it's a hamburger patty. The size is no bigger than a soup can lid, the cheese, Jalapeño & onions are all on top. And the service? IT STINKS! Very slow kitchen service, it took about 15+ minutes to get our food. Had the salmon - it was huge!! ...and well done, not over cooked, crusty exterior. Mac & cheese - good but texture could use some sprinkled breadcrumbs or Parmesan. Good Okra and tomatoes but could use some reduction, i.e. too watery. Sweet tea hit the spot.... next time I'll aim for a small fillet, per my buddies' recommendation. We were in the area for my daughter's Cross Country meet, Yelp'd food joints in the area. This place came up with 4 stars, we decided to give it a try. Why not? The place looks new, nice interior, clean, friendly wait staff. We placed our order and everything was advertised. Delicious burgers!!! My bro in law ordered the chicken fried chicken, OMG!!! It was delicious!!! Really moist succulent chicken breast! The deserts were delicious as well. If you are in the area, this place is worth a stop. I'm not giving them 5 stars only because their burglar alarm happened to go off while we were there. It went off for about 30 ear screeching minutes!!! They were nice enough to move us to the reserved dinning area where the noise was less and comped our drinks!!! Other than that, it's a good place. I'm from LA and we frequently visit my wife's family in Bellville. A friend of my wife's sister highly recommended this place so we decided to take a little drive to see what the fuss was all about. We went on the premise that this was the best chicken fried steak in Texas. We roll up for lunch on a Monday. It was past the lunch hour so the restaurant was pretty empty. I have to say that it was much bigger than I expected and it was pretty new and clean. There are a couple of dining rooms and a bar/lounge area with some flat screen TV's. My wife went for the chicken fried steak. I opted for the pan seared catfish with a side of grilled shrimp to be different. The verdict is that the chicken fried steak is very good, but I don't know if I can say it's the best. Also, she ordered a large portion knowing that I was going to have some, but really the small portion is probably enough for the average person. The catfish was good. It was lightly seasoned with a little salt and pepper. I added a little lemon to it and it was a nice change of pace from your typical fried catfish. The service here is friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable and I'd recommend it if you're in the area, although the 45 minute drive from Bellville is a bit much to make this a regular spot for me. read more

This restaurant is truly five-star!! We stopped here on our way to another restaurant due to the number of cars in the parking lot. That's always a good sign! We had steaks that were cooked to perfection, creamy baked potatoes and an excellent, fresh Caesar salad! Our guys had Chicken Fried Steak with potato casserole and fresh snapped, well seasoned green beans! The CFS could be cut with a fork and was made with real steak, not pressed steak parts. They hand bread their fresh mushrooms and then fry them until golden brown!! And the banana cake to top it all off made a perfect dinner! They have beer and wine and great iced tea!! Picked up their special tonight. 8 pc fried chicken with mashed potatoes, rolls and okra. It was all delicious. Pieces were pretty small but crispy, not greasy and full of flavor. Wish the white and dark was a little more balanced bc we got a portion of a breast and a small wing, the rest were thighs and one drumstick. The rolls as always were delicious; the Okra was still warm and crisp when we made it home. Potatoes were REAL mashed potatoes not instant. Delicious, friendly staff and prompt service. read more

One of my favorite restaurants when I'm this area of the state. Anytime I'm on 290 on the way to Brenham, Houston, Austin or a smaller town in the area I try to stop off for lunch. This is a definite favorite with me and coworkers as we will drive around 15 miles one way to eat at the restaurant. The service is great and everyone is super friendly. There is a great priced lunch special Tuesday- Friday. I've only eaten here on those days, so I'm unfamiliar if the weekend has a special. Everything I've tried on the menu has been really good. From the porkchops, chicken strips, grilled chicken, salads, steak and sides. Best food in the area. read more

Our new favorite place to stop near Sherwood Faire. The half pound burger is very good. It's more than I can eat at once. The onion rings are fresh, hot, crispy. They aren't greasy. The chocolate eruption cake is OMG good. Hubs raved about the chicken fried steak. Our server knew the menu and answered questions with a smile. The floor is cedar planks; worthy of a second look. A gas station attendant directed me there in the spring of 2012 when stopping for gas I asked if there was any good fried chicken. She phoned them for me, placed my ordered and I went on to Carmine on my way to Austin, Texas. The chicken was very good but left me wondering about eating a steak there. While traveling back to Houston, Texas from Austin, Texas in the later part of October 2012 I decided to take a "risk" and try their steaks. Truly I expected the taste of one of those chain restaurants like Golden Corral. It was anything but. Insofar as taste, quality of the meat, and the service I can report it is not a mirage and eating there it's easy to understand that for those who know about it the place is truly a magnet. And being served by Brittane PIETSCH is better than any of their homemade desserts it seems. read more

The restaurant is so clean you can eat off of the floor. I am NOT a neat freak but I very much respect a clean restaurant because I know that means I am getting clean food. Very delicious I had a burger. And they definitely put their own flavoring in this burger. The price is very affordable for burger especially one so delicious ..steak is overpriced but good. I had a little trouble with the service I ordered ahead of time for pick up but it was not ready when I arrived. In fact they hadn't even begun cooking it. So I waited. I got the bag and I asked for ketchup and mustard. She came back A few minutes later with just ketchup and totally forgot. I don't understand why she was confused there was only four customers in the whole restaurant and there was about 6 staff and all the other customers were seated and eating. So then I asked another lady for mustard. She went in. Then the original waitress started arguing about mustard ...and I'm like "I don't want to argue about mustard" .geez. So a second waitress came back with what is probably the smallest bit of mustard I have ever seen about enough for two french fries. Best grill in the area I admit. But 15 minutes either direction will yield and steakhouse with better prices and better service. If you are going to charge 6 more dollars for your steak you better not argue when the customer asks for mustard its not liquid gold its just mustard. If it wasn't the cleanest restaurant in a 50 mile radius I would give it 3 stars. Great place for dining. Terrible place for pickup. Update...I called ahead to order and explain to the manager what had happened before. I asked to talk with the manager and was put on hold for 5 full minutes. Then someone ....not the manager...finally picked up the phone and then put me back on hold for another 3 minutes. When the manager finally answered and I explained my inconveniences in my prior visit she offered no real sincere gesture of apology, just "oh I'm sorry to hear that. Can I take your order?" I shrugged my shoulders and asked how long it would take to make a burger to go. She said 15 minutes. It turned out they took so long to take my call I would have passed their restaurant before it was ready. So...update...3 Stars. If your restaurant is on the side of the highway in a small town you need to have decent pick up service and better service than this. read more

This is a great steakhouse in an area where there are only a handful of restaurants . The prices are fair and the staff is friendly . I always eat here when I am in town for antique week ! While visiting Brenham, TX this place was recommended to try out for dinner. Upon entering there was quite a crowd at the door waiting to be seated. Most were large groups and families, so I had high hopes that a table for 2 would be easy to come by. Being that there was a football playoff game, I agreed to sit at the bar so that my date would be able to check out the game. The very friendly hostess approached us immediately and when we told her we'd like to sit at the bar she immediately escorted us to the bar and secured us some seats. The decor is as to be expected, very "Texas hill country" with stained pine walls and deer/rustic items hanging on the wall. The menu options are as to be expected. Miscellaneous fried appetizers, simple salads, steak, seafood, and a list of sides to choose from. Something unexpected was an extensive wine list. There were many choices in all price ranges. Plenty to chose from by the glass as well. We chose a Cabernet that costs around $14 at the grocery store, priced at $25 here, which I found very reasonable. I had filet mignon on the mind so I knew that was what I was going to order. I chose a side item off the specials of the week that was a cucumber salad and got a baked potato. My date ordered a ribeye, a Caesar salad, and another special side item of mashed sweet potato. Our steaks were both cooked perfectly and the side items were truly delicious. My cucumber salad was thinly sliced cucumbers with a simple vinegar and sugar marinade. The mashed sweet potatoes were fabulous as well. They tasted like a sweet potato pie. Wine and dinner was under $80, which would have been an impossible feat in or around the Houston area. My only small complaint is that I wish they had a wedge salad on the menu. This is something I always crave when I have a steak and I'm sure that JW's could add that to the menu with minimum trouble. All in all, I'd come here again if I'm in the area. It's a great little small town restaurant with more to offer than it's counterparts. read more
